Dis Guy: I mean they dont sound or look like they're earning that much, but you should see people rushing to carry their suitcase after smiling and chatting pure breeze
In nigeria to be honest top management in some companies do bleep all, they have many middle managers they delegate to, they pile all the work on the junior/middle staff but some sectors dont allow you do that
followed my uncle around for a week in nigeria meeting many of these top dudes, and I kept wondering how they had so much time going for lunch several times in a day, parties midweek, welcoming parties, leaving parties, personal building projects all during working week Exactly !! I guess there are quite a few issues when considering the possibility of working in Nigeria. To compensate for the madness and stress, 2m a month is not asking for much. |

I am going to do a job, a professional one at that, get paid and take care of my family. One major trait that puts me off Nigerian elite is the show off , big manism attitude, the pomposity and arrogance. We British come from humble backgrounds |

blacksta: Unfortunately my dear NLder you can not work or Last in Nigeria The typical Nja worker is corrupt to core.- The other alternative will be start your business at least you will be lord and almighty of your business without compromising your integrity. But really, what does working a 9 - 5 job have to do with corruption ? |

blacksta: At poster - I would tread carefully
A Friend of my mine recently got a job in Nigeria as an Executive director for Starcomms and his salary was 21 Millon Naira and was also given a 3br flat in Lekki and an official car the guy is back in the U.K after about 5 months in Nigeria. Working in Nigeria is different ball game - Your integrity will surely be tested and your fellow workers will always ask you to compromise in all matter. for example My friend was expected to be part of team who rigged Annual general meeting shareholder votes and at some point their office was raided by EFCC
If you are spiritual type and dont want to go to hell - ol boy stick your contracting in the U.K at least your invoices get paid on time. Hmm, I think this might be a problem for me, as i cannot under any circumstance compromise my integrity either with the company I work for or the police. This is food for thought. |

buzugee: 2m a month is asking for too much if you are just a 'worker' in the field as you will be if you are a senior engineer. the big bucks comes if when you get in as a 'senior engineer'. you have such a bubbly personality such that you can manage people and people like you and want to achieve their goals because of the respect they have for you. when such qualities are recognized in you as with the guy who is now a director, only then will you be plucked from the field into management, only then can you ask for that kind of money and even more. people on the field dont earn that kinda cash, it is 'managers of men' that earn that. lol. just a worker Any senior engineer with over 11 years experience from the UK or USA , having worked with major blue chip companies on up to $1b customer contracts, must be mad to accept less than 2m without house and car allowance. |

Kobojunkie: Naira 10 million per annum is approximately $75 000!
Let's put it this way, I would not advise even my worst enemy to move down to Nigeria for that, especially for a senior position in IT. lol Don't mind Jay Bee, he is removed from the stark reality on the ground. |

jay bee: Not going to argue with you but frankly IT professionals don't earn 2M in naija. That's just u living in fantasy land. If your estimated 10m naira excludes housing and car allowance , then it is something to consider, but if it includes both of these important items it is a joke. |

You'd be lucky to earn 10M per annum in Naija I am even more familiar with IT than you are, lol. As a senior network designer and implementer, working for large British and American blue chip organizations, 10M is having a laugh , seriously. |

jay bee: dude with 50k, your take home pay is: <3K => <750K Naira Stop manufacturing figures in your head.
Do you work as a contractor? Mind u IT professional is pretty generic, What do u specialise in? I am not manufacturing figures in my head, many of us earn more than £50k in the Cisco and security world and I mean permanent not contracting. But, I want like for like, before tax. Lets not go down the route of take home pay. Nigeria is not exactly an easy place to live in, just like you have London weighting , should there not be Lagos inconveniences allowance , seriously ? |
Politics › Re: Relocation To Nigeria From The Uk 2011. Am I Mad Or Is It Possible ? by notcorrupt(op): 8:01pm On Dec 29, 2010 |
jay bee: @OP I bet u work as a contractor in the UK. What permanent IT jobs pay >7K after tax in the UK or even US? With 10-20 years experience you had still be earning <5k after tax so asking for 2M is a bit far fetched.
Engineers with >3yrs experience (Oil Coys) in naija earn above >15 M per annum
This was me expecting you to say u work as an IB Yeah right, Assuming you earn 50K in the UK which when converted to Naira = 1.25 million , and then you factor in housing , car, inconveniences etc etc, 2m is nothing, especially when you have to pay school fees which otherwise you do not pay in the UK ( free education ) and health care ( again free in the UK ). |

AjanleKoko: Okay, fine. Possibly if you got a job in the oil sector. Their pay is calibrated according to international benchmarks in their sector, and may be adjusted for cost of living in Nigeria, as well as purchasing power parity. So, start applying to them through their websites and you might just get lucky.
The financial sector has gone southwards, so no need even discussing them here.
In telecoms, you would have to be in senior or maybe even executive management to earn that kind of money. And for you to be in senior management, you must have management experience from wherever you're coming. Glo is an exception though. They pay indiscriminately, so you might have a chance there. The others are MNCs, and not the right kind. Local talent abounds in IT, so they might not really care much, at least not to pay N2m a month. Oil might just be your best bet. MNCs are my target. I hear from colleagues who took the same leap, that they do pay very well. |

Kobojunkie: I have been looking into opportunities in Nigeria, my area, and wondering if it is possible to get any comparable to what I get here, down there. So far, the most I have come up with are jobs with the UN and oil companies in locations I would consider remote. I am like you, I prefer Lagos to anyplace else in that country, but unlike you, I am probably not looking to making a permanent move. More like going there for 3 to 6 months out of my year. Sure. But I am not yet making a permanent move, this is more like a 'test the waters' type of situation. If all goes well especially after the elections, then a permanent relocation becomes more likely. |

AjanleKoko: Maybe you need to be more specific. What did you study, and what have you been doing in the UK? They don't pay wages in Nigeria based on self-recognition, quality of education, or what profession you belong to. The various sectors pay what they have benchmarked as wages they can afford. For example a financial analyst in Cadbury will definitely not earn the same wages as a financial analyst in Chevron, years of experience notwithstanding. Cadbury will pay what it has identified as its appropriate threshold, based on the sector in which it operates in Nigeria (FMCG). Every other consideration is secondary. Likewise any other profession, or sector. Okay , an IT professional with over 10 years experience working with large blue chip companies in the UK. |

@Kobojunkie Let me address the two points you raised. 1. what company pays N2 million a month these days in Nigeria? Could you please share so those of us out here can move back too to get a piece of that pie? A multinational company will pay that amount, in fact I know of many who do. 2. Also, I am not looking for you to convince me that it is possible, I am looking for specifics . . . what companies, what positions etc. nothing less Telecommunications, oil companies, etc etc Mostly managerial or senior positions. But one will have to be employed as an expatriate and not a Nigerian |

You do know most people will think you did not succeed in the UK. That is why you are running back home. Unless you are retiring, I would stay in the UK and try to make it there. @Ochi_Agha, mumu. Do you not realize that most willing UK returnees ( other than the deportees ) are those who have acquired significant work and academic experience normally over a 10 year period and in very good professions. |

eku_bear: If you can secure a job that pays you 2 million naira a month, that is more than enough money to move (assuming you don't have enormous amounts or a cocaine habit )
Also, I don't think you'll miss too much from the UK if you relocated somewhere like Abuja. Roads, infrastructure, power supply and safety are all pretty high here, if you live in a nice part of town. Cocaine ke, God forbid. Abuja is too boring, Lagos is my type of city, chaotic but hustling and bustling. Also I am not one to be too particular on comforts, security though is a must. Thanks, |
