Akpabio to commission 500 projects
Five hundred, out of the over 4,000 life-touching projects of Governor Godswill Akpabio’s administration in Akwa Ibom State are slated for commissioning beginning Match 6.

A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Aniekan Umanah, made available to our correspondent, indicated that the commissioning, which is expected to be carried out by Akpabio, will be proceeded by town hall meetings to interact with the people from the area slated for each day.

“The town hall meetings of His Excellency, Governor Godswill Akpabio, with Akwa Ibom people, across the 10 Federal Constituencies begins on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at the Eket Council Hall, Eket”, it read.

As a believer in participatory democracy, Umanah further said, Akpabio, apart from briefing the people on the achievements and progress so far made by his government, looked forward to using the meetings as veritable platforms to get feedbacks from the people, on the policies and actions of his administration since 2007.

He called on the people of Akwa Ibom to show appreciation for the participatory approach of Akpabio to governance by coming out en mass to bare minds on issues, as all members of the State Executive Council (SEC) would be on hand at each venue to provide appropriate answers to any question that may arise.

Other highlight of the constituency briefing, the commissioner said, would include the commissioning by Akpabio, of 500 completed year 2013 rural projects.

According to him, the 500 projects form part of the over 4000 lives-touching community projects executed across the 31 local government areas of the State by the Akpabio-led administration.

While the commissioning of projects are scheduled to hold between 10.00 a.m. and 12.00 noon, the town hall meetings/constituency briefings will hold between 1. pm. and 4.pm, each day of the exercise, while calling on all stakeholders to attend and participate fully.

Good question this quatenery hospital that is one of the center that will help train and sharpen the skills of medical professionals in the state and country. The standard of this hospital is higher than that of a teaching hospitals and most doctors in Nigeria do not know how to operate in hospital environment like this one, thats why the 150 doctors that will practice here are expatriates and nigerian doctor's who trained or practice abroad. But in the years to come this knowledge will be transferred to our local doctors.
Akpabio has built a brand new states university which started in 2010 and graduated its first student a few weeks ago and in addition he sent 50 PhD student of akwa origin abroad for training of which 24 are already back in the state university helping make the university manpower the best of any university of the same age in the country.
The university will help in the manpower development of the state just like the other projects. E.g. the MRO in akwaibomstate airport has sent over 100 indegines for aviation specific training abroad, and Akpabio also was the one that paid for the over 150 students that the past governor sent abroad for training in the twilight o his administration. Manpower development is a process not a destination, and this administration has done its bit to help move the wheel of that process in the state.
excellent response!Akpabio is indeed the best governor in Nigeria.

PoliticsRe: A’Ibom, moribund industries & dearth of jobs- due to Akpabio's bad policy by notobs(op): 12:35am On May 13, 2015
despite government’s avowed commitment to massively industrialise the state, its indigenes, organised labour, student bodies and the civil society groups have continued to criticise the administration of Governor Akpabio for its unwillingness to industrialise the state as well as revamp the ailing industries. Following mounting public outcry and criticisms of the administration’s lack of commitment to industrialisation, Governor Akpabio, it would be recalled, promised during his second term election campaigns that he was going to construct one industry in each of the 31 local government areas of the state. Three years into the second lap of the current administration, no industry has been established.
PoliticsA’Ibom, moribund industries & dearth of jobs- due to Akpabio's bad policy by notobs(op): 12:26am On May 13, 2015
Akwa Ibom State is one of the states in the country which boasts of a tall list of moribund industries. The ailing industries scattered across the three senatorial districts of the state have suffered abandonment for close to 30 years running with little or no effort by government to revive them. The resultant negative effects include a swelling army of unemployed youths, poverty, hunger, disharmony and an upsurge in forms of criminality in the state, the highest culprits being the youth population.

Investigations by Saturday Newswatch revealled that Akwa Ibom State has over seven dead industries which are at various levels of decay. These companies, if operational, could have engaged the productive capacity of young people in the state as well as create wealth in the process. The industries which were once functional but left to criminally rot away include Sunshine Batteries in Essien Udim, Quality Ceramics in Itu, Peacock Paints in Etinan, Qua Steel Industry in Eket, Plastocrown in Uyo, Biscuit Factory and the Abestonic Industry in Oron.

Most, if not all of the dead industries, were established between 1979 and 1983 during the civilian administration of Dr. Clement Isong. Isong, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was governor of the old Cross River State and had established these industries to create jobs and boost the economy of the state. While functional, Abestonic Industry, for instance, was into the production of asbestos roofing sheets; Peacock Paints was into the manufacture of a variety of top quality paints considered some of the best brands in the country.

Plastocrown Industry produced bottle corks and allied products for Champion Breweries and its products sold beyond the shores of the old Cross River State which are today Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Sunshine Batteries, Quality Ceramics and the Biscuit Factory were not doing badly either as they manufactured products that were adjudged some of the best in terms of global standard and as such enjoyed patronage in almost all parts of the country.

PoliticsAkpabio To Become A Siddon Look Senator From 29th May - Guardian Newspaper by notobs(op): 11:15pm On May 11, 2015
The ebullient governor of akwa ibom granted an interesting interview to guardian today and touched on lots of issues here are excerpts:
Are you comfortable with the emerging power equation, the way they are distributing political offices, they are not even mentioning the South-South or the South-East?
As one of the believers in the Nigerian project, I want to maintain what K.O. Mbadiwe of blessed memory said. He said he is now in a state of icavoism. It means Siddon Look. I am in a state of Siddon Look. I don’t want to comment because they have the cake and also the knife. I would think that everything must be done to maintain the peace and unity of the country, to give each part a sense of belonging.

And if he didn't build the roads for the city to be top notch you will have people bumping their way around the pot holes in town in the name of one carnival or the other. Your IGR plan is not feasible. Name an event we can make a sustainable carnival, and...... did Chime not host top musical celebrities every year in Enugu?
Chime did not need to build any new road to make the conference centre viable, the centre was strategically sited in between umuawulu street, independence ave. and michael opara square which has typically had good roads even before chime was born.
Stop making excuses for his failure.

For a start; complete all abandoned project especially the ones that have passes 50% completion stage, seeing that government has already spent huge resources on the said project.

Improve IGR.

Implement the national minimum wage

prioritize rural development

improve state schools and health facilities.

Tackle corruption and impunity by state government officials

Good point, but the IGR question is still waiting for your attention Sir.
Tourism is one of the ways enugu can improve its IGR and all the points i listed are things that could generate IGR too eg If chime had not abandoned the conference centre and hotel that were 80% completed by previous admin, those two projects in addition to improving the profile of enugu as a tourism viable city would have also improved the city's IGR. Think of the lost IGR from those projects in the past 8yrs while chime was busy fleecing the state.

People make me laugh when they come up with all these suggestions for development when the fundamentals are not yet fully in place. One guy had the nerve to say that Chime was concentrating too much on roads! I mean, what is wrong with you people? Do you know that in this day and age no city or town worth its salt anywhere in the world has a SINGLE road that is untarred or without a covered sidewalk? You people talk of developing tourism etc... I mean, is there a shortage of destinations on this earth that somebody will leave where he is to start 'touring' a city where roads are untarred and unpaved with open gutters? Where he exits his hotel for a walk and is confronted with sand and gutters? Honestly some of you need to travel to countries - not even in Europe or America. Visit the Carribean or Latin American destinations and see what I'm talking about. Fact is you MUST make your physical environment top notch and very clean FIRST, before considering anything else. You cannot have dusty untarred side streets. You must have pedestrian sidewalks on EVERY street, not just major roads. Same as street lighting etc. You must hire people to sweep the roads daily to avoid any dust or dirt on the streets. These are the FIRST things to do even if it takes ten years. THEN you can start talking of things like tourist attractions, attracting international investors etc etc.
Those countries did not build all those roads in 8 or 10 yrs! it took time sometimes centuries to get to where they are, for now we are talking about what a state can achieve within it administrative life cycle of 4 or 8 yrs.
Concentrating on roads alone is not enough. and by the way tourism does not need to be like vegas type of europe or caribbean type tourism, It must start from attracting Nigerian tourist who don't have the european taste or expectations.
The Calabar carnival and argungu fishing festivals are examples of successful Nigerian tourism events that brings a lot of people to town for the events and generate money for the cities and private business, hotels etc.
Don't tell me that all the roads in calabar and argungu are tarred!

ChimaAdeoye:
The notobs guy-man that has been trying to derail the thread by asking redundant questions about what Chime completed should desist. I guess the Zik ave. and the twin bridges, Agbani road dualized, Airport road dualized, our secretariat, resurfacing of all city roads etc etc were all there in 2007. Chime was instrumental in bringing a massive mall to Enugu as the second site in Nigeria after Lagos!!! Most SE &SS governors in 2008 simply did not know there was such a thing in the country. ONLY Akpabio and Kwankwaso comes close to Chime in the transformation he spearheaded. Of course Kano and Akwa Ibom had excess funds to do it, which Enugu did not.
Luckily this thread captures a few of those projects, thus you should search them for yourself if you are truly serious to learn.

Chime should have completed the International conference center and the hotel attached to it. This could have brought more conference tourism into the state. I also think that Chime has not properly leveraged on AIIA, Enugu to bring more tourists into the state by supporting cultural festivals, parades and developing tourist sites. I hope the incoming government will take tourism seriously and try to market Enugu as a holiday destination to Newly married Nigerian couples as well as international tourists.
Also, the Enugu Free Trade Industrial zone was not given the needed government impetus to take off.

DEFINITELY, the development of world class housing estates around the city is a welcome thing. Also, the re-planning of the city to make all parts totally accessible with good roads is a great idea. Enugu today is undoubtedly one of the few Nigerian cities that can be said to be decent up to international standard. Many Nigerian state governors have NO CLUE how to build decent cities. They allow unplanned shoddy houses to spring up everywhere and call it "development".That Enugu has managed to compete in decency with Abuja,Kano or Lagos in spite of having one of the tiniest state budgets in Nigeria is a great testimony to Chime's visionary and sterling leadership.
I think you are burying your head in the sand and refusing to acknowledge the truth about the ineffectiveness of chime administration. But your denials does not change the fact about chime's wasted years in Enugu Government.

My Argument with spyder was over an article i posted , which was published in the guardian that summarized the 8yrs of Gov. Chime's administration, the few gains he made and the abundant ills he brought to enugu (i would advise you to read the article first).
I knowing Enugu well thought that it was a very balanced article that captured Enugu state under chime in an unbiased manner.
The Argument was that Chime has not completed any Major project in Enugu in his Eight Years as Governor, and Uptill now no one has refuted that assertion including you.

My point is not to pull Enugu down,As some of you folks on these thread who seem to categorize anyone that is objective about chime or has a contrary view to your praise singing.Chime administration is a "spilled milk and there is no point crying over it".

My motive is that the Next government that comes after chime should do more than chime, I do know that people in power in enugu have been listening to views expressed on this thread, that's why i implore you guys that comment here to be objective, so we can better the lots of enugu by being objective.Least the next government will think that if he can deliver mediocre administration like chime did for 8yrs, fleece the state of its limited resources to advance his pocket that it would be Okay for Enugu, and that some of you will clap for him.
Now is the time for some of you that love enugu to begin to call for the changes that you want to see in enugu, so the next administration can get a clue, making excuse for chimes failures might just replicate the same failure from his successor.

spyder880:
I wonder how people expect all the projects in Enugu to be completed with less than N90 billion allocation. Even Rivers, Lagos and Akwa Ibom has not completed all their projects 100%. The real estate boom in Enugu is unimaginable, even interior villages in Enugu has risen and is well sought after now, that's a ripple effect of the Chime policies. Schools, hospitals? I think we are not doing badly in that aspect, after Chimaroke spent so much on school infrastructure and health sector, Chime managed the school administrative structure well by providing stronger school management and administration. Schools in Enugu has been enjoying an unprecedented smooth flow, salaries promptly paid and improvements in the quality of learning. I have people in the education sector in Enugu.

A governor who lacks focus can build you classroom blocks but refuse to pay salaries like some of our neighbors, thereby plunging the education sector into chaos, but the fact that many ministries like education, health, environment, commerce and tourism worked smoothly for 8 years (no strikes) is enough testament that the man at the top knows his onions. What is the need of starting to construct all school buildings if you know you have no funds to complete it? Governors should rank their priorities. And we know this man does not build mediocre projects, Chime cannot afford to build us a two penny school and leave it for Enugu state, his tastes are so high. People outside do envy our high taste in project delivery.

Leadership is not all about making noises and excuses, Chime sat still and did what he was elected to do, his greatest undoing is his refusal to fight dirty, which made some of his officials to start the dirty fights on his behalf like Mrs. Nwobodo and co.

The day I respected Chime is when he agreed to step down for Ekweremmadu in the senate! This is unheard of in Nigerian politics, for a serving governor to step out of power and allow another take his coveted position, this man must be a European, not Nigerian! I know he did it for the love of Enugu state. Any other governor would have spent 6 moths allocation of his state and uproot Ekweremmadu with power and intimidation, the grasses can suffer as the two elephants trample on all of us in a prolonged fight. Chime will be remembered for leaving a working state, not a disunited entity with enough bad blood to last us a decade. And the next governor would have spent the next 4 years mending broken relationships.

I still maintain that he did very poorly in rural development, for abandoning Nkanu local government and others, for sharing all the reserved lands in Enugu. Esut and IMT lands, Rangers training grounds, back of ETV, he has his low points, but his administration is still a success.

I am scoring Chime an overall 65% mark for his 8 years.
How comes you cant list the major projects he completed? all you are doing is tell stories, the states you mentioned, Rivers, Akwa Ibom,Lagos have completed major projects in addition to the ones they have not completed. Rivers we know 250 primary schools completed out of 750 planned, 1 model sec out of 7, 13,000 teachers employed, 110 health centres and two tertiary hospitals, completed etc. Lagos ikoyi - lekki link bridge, jetties, hospital etc Akwa Ibom new bi-campus state university, Airport, Stadium,6000 class room blocks for primary and secondary schools, 5 new general hospitals etc
can you name some of the major projects chime completed in 8 yrs?

you talk about high taste in projects, where is the evidence? please dont mention the incomplete secretariat!

The reason chime didnt fight Ekweremadu was because he knew he could not beat ekweremadu in the senate race, the PDP national made chime choose between picking his successor or his senate seat. He settled for picking his successor. He didn't do it because he loved Enugu it was for his selfish interest.

Truth be told....
Chime governed Enugu extremely well managing to use the less than N90 billion naira (One of the state poorest budgets in Nigeria) to transform the state. As a coal city boy, i know what it was in 2007 and what it is now. Not to say i didn't expect Enugu to improve since 2007, the rate of improvement was phenomenal to put it mildly.
Now, i have been one of Chime's strongest critics for not completing the iconic International conference center. But to say he did nothing is actually a hilarious statement from people who imagine we are all blind and suffer from memory loss.
The question to you is simple, mention any major project that chime completed in his 8yrs as governor?
