PoliticsLabour Minister Ngige To Decide On 2023 Presidency Tuesday by NwaNimo1(op): 7:03pm On Apr 16, 2022
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, on Saturday, said, he had consulted with both mortal and immortal people and would disclose his position on the 2023 presidency on Tuesday, 19th April, 2022. grin

Ngige disclosed this to newsmen on Saturday at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, while responding to a request from a pressure group under the aegis of the South East Progressive Forum, to contest the presidency in 2023.

“This is an ambush. It’s an Easter ambush and anything done in Easter is spiritual. So I thank you people for meeting us here and saying what is in your mind. Make no mistake about it.

“It is us in the southern part of Nigeria that the presidency is due for. It’s also true, a truism that of all the zone in the Southern Nigeria that is only the South East zone that has not tasted the presidency.

“So, that gives much weight to the demand you are making now. Yes, in PDP, they are considering whether it will be North or South. No, in our own, as gentlemen, we have already agreed in South”, he said.

Ngige said he waited till after spiritual season of lent to enable him consult God in order not to make mistakes before declaring his intention about the presidency.

“In December 31, 2021, I told a group that after the spiritual season of lent, I will consult with my God, Angel and Arch-Angels. Easter is tomorrow and Easter is a resurrection day. We shall rise with the resurrection and after Easter Monday, I will make a pronouncement on my journey to the presidency.

“So we have done the consultation with mortal and immortal people and we are going to speak, but make no mistake again, anything to be shared, if it is seven, it should be shared equally. If you collect first, collect second and collect again without others collecting, that’s where the problem comes”, he added.

While commending the group for believing in him, Ngige said, “I am inviting you on Tuesday to Alor, in Idemili South, that’s where I am going to unveil my intention for the Presidency.”

On the possibility of the South East aspirants presenting a consensus candidate, Ngige said, “the issue of consensus candidate has not arisen now. You have to wait untill when all the declarations have been made. Not only the declaration, the buying of forms, when the forms have been bought and expression of interest. That is the official first step on declaration.

“So, after declaration of interest the people will buy the forms and fill, some people will buy form for some people too, but that’s when the question for consensus will arise. So until we get to that bridge, we will cross it.”

On his part, leader of the group Comr, Tony Chime, said the call for Ngige to contest for the number one post of the country was predicated on his track record in governance.

Chime said that though so many people have queued for the position, however, none of them meets their criteria for the position other than Ngige.

“We know the good things you have done in the south East and Nigeria in general. Our appeal is that you should come and contest for the President of Nigeria.

“We know that there are too many people queueing up for this position, but we have screened them individually and collectively, but we have not found the material we need, hence we are here to appeal to you our brother, father and son to come and deliver us from the problem we are having in this country”, said Chime.

HealthCOVID-19: Nigeria Records One Death Two Months After Last Fatality by NwaNimo1(op): 9:03pm On Apr 15, 2022
The disease control centre also noted that the latest is cumulative data for April 12 and 13, 2022.

Two months after the last fatality was recorded, Nigeria on Wednesday announced one death from the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest data released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday morning shows that the fatality toll increased to 3,143 from 3,142 recorded on February 18, 2022.

The disease centre added that 13 new coronavirus infections across four states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were also recorded.

The new confirmed cases also increased the country's infection toll to 255,646, while a total of 249,842 have now been treated and discharged nationwide since the outbreak of the pandemic two years ago.

The disease control centre also noted that the latest is cumulative data for April 12 and 13, 2022.

Breakdown

The breakdown of the NCDC data shows that Lagos State, Nigeria's epicentre of the disease, topped the infection chart with six cases.

Also, Rivers and Delta states in the South-south recorded three and two cases respectively, while the FCT and Kano State reported a single case each.

NCDC noted that seven states: Abia, Bauchi, Cross River, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Sokoto reported that they recorded no cases on Wednesday.

Implication of new fatality

The new fatality case has been recorded at a time when the nation thought it could heave a sigh of relief from the pandemic that has not only ravaged its economy but claimed many lives.

The Nigerian government had on April 6 lifted the nationwide midnight curfew earlier imposed to contain the pandemic.

Restrictions on parties, concerts, and other crowded activities were also lifted.

The decision was contained in a statement issued by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 and titled; "Implementation Guidelines for Easing COVID-19 Restrictions."

The PSC said the social restriction recommendations were revised in line with the three established thematic areas of movement, industry and labour, as well as community activities.

It explained that the decision followed the reduced risk of importation of new variants, availability of vaccines and the increasing number of people vaccinated in Nigeria and globally.

The government had on May 10, 2021, imposed a nationwide curfew of 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. to limit the spread of the virus.

While the new fatality recorded may have no significant impact on the newly released guidelines, experts hope the record of fatality will not continue in the coming days.

Vaccination update shocked

Speaking recently in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, the executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Faisal Shuaib, said more than 13 million eligible persons in Nigeria have been fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus and 23 million others have received their first dose.

"As of today the 11th of April 2022, we have fully vaccinated 13,588,718 persons which is approximately 12.2 per cent of our total eligible population.

"Meanwhile 23,012,700 others have received their first dose which represents 18 per cent of the total eligible population," he said.

He said the agency has intensified technical support to all states to ramp up the vaccination coverage.

PoliticsRe: Former Governors Dariye, Nyame, 157 Others Granted State Pardon by NwaNimo1(op):
PoliticsFormer Governors Dariye, Nyame, 157 Others Granted State Pardon by NwaNimo1(op): 9:29pm On Apr 14, 2022
The National Council of State has granted a state pardon to former governors Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame of Plateau and Taraba respectively, who are serving terms in jail for corruption.

The governors were among 159 prisoners pardoned by the Council at a meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja on Thursday.

Among the beneficiaries are a former military general and minister under the Sani Abacha regime, Tajudeen Olanrewaju, an army lieutenant colonel, Akiyode, who was an aide of the former deputy of Mr Abacha, Oladipo Diya; and all the junior officers jailed over the 1990 abortive Gideon Orkar coup.

According to a presidential source, the two former governors were pardoned on health and age grounds.

Mr Nyame, who was governor of Taraba State from 1999 to 2007, was serving a 12-year jail term at the Kuje prison for misappropriation of funds while he was in office.

The Supreme Court upheld his conviction in February 2020.

Mr Dariye, who governed Plateau between 1999 and 2007, was jailed for stealing N2 billion in public funds during his time as Plateau State governor, in 1999 and 2007.

The former governor, elected as the senator representing Plateau Central in the Senate in 2015, was sentenced in June 2018 but still completed his tenure as a senator from jail in June 2019.

In 2021, he led a partly successful appeal at the Supreme Court with a five-man panel of the court headed by Mary Odili, quashing his conviction in respect of criminal misappropriation in a unanimous decision.

The offences he was discharged of only attracted two years’ imprisonment and, so had no impact on his overall number of years of imprisonment.

The apex court upheld the ex-governor’s conviction in respect of criminal breach of trust, which attracted a 10-year jail term.

Adebukola Banjoko of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja had on June 12, 201,8 convicted Mr Dariye and originally sentenced him to 14years’ imprisonment on charges of criminal breach of trust and two years jail terms for criminal misappropriation.

But following his appeal against the judgment, the Court of Appeal in Abuja on November 16, 2018, commuted the 14 years’ jail term to 10.

While the Court of Appeal affirmed his conviction, it held that section 416 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, prohibited the imposition of a maximum sentence on a first offender, such as the convict.

The former governor had further appealed to the Supreme Court.

Ejembi Emo, a member of the apex court’s panel, noted that Mr Dariye’s appeal “succeeded in part” after quashing his conviction in respect of charges of criminal misappropriation.

The meeting of the Council was attended by a former president and military heads of state, except former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is in the United States on medical vacation.
