An Islamic cleric, Dr Abdul Haady Tiamiyu has warned that the growing menace of street children and urchins in garages, motor parks, slums and markets in the southwest region may be worse than the Boko Haram menace in northern Nigeria.

Tiamiyu made this disclosure while delivering the 2022 Oyo State House of Assembly Muslim Community Ramadan Lecture titled “Nigeria’s Current Social Vices: Islamic Antidotes”.

Banditry, terrorism and the Boko Haram menace which started in 2009 in Borno State have been attributed to the growing rate of street children in most of northern Nigeria.

Tiamiyu who is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Abeokuta, Ogun State while delivering the lecture in Ibadan, warned that the menace of street children at motor parks, slums and markets if not urgently addressed by the governments of Southwest may be worse than Boko Haram in the northern region.

The cleric said the root cause of banditry, kidnapping and terrorism in the Northern part of Nigeria was the Almajiri system.

He explained that the Almajiri system gave rise to millions of street and abandoned children who now constituted themselves into dangerous groups threatening the peace and existence of the nation.

The cleric said people should expect an alarming surge in crime rates when they continue to give birth to children without proper parental care and quality education.

He identified the collapse of the country’s educational and family system, failure of the political class, lack of provisions for the weak and the poor as well as a failure of faith-based communities and groups as the root causes of the current social vices in Nigeria.

“When we continue to give birth to children without proper parental care and quality education, then we should expect an alarming surge in crime rates. I am afraid the situation is disturbingly high at the moment and nowhere in the country is safe.

“The news is daily awash with incidences of armed robbery, stealing, kidnapping, ritual killing, assassination, thuggery, banditry, brigandage, vandalism, cult clashes, attacks, illegal sexual escapades, tribal, ethnic and religious crises, political violence, internet fraud, corruption, money laundering and lots more.

“Every system seems to have collapsed in Nigeria. We now have incidental and accidental parents and families that do not see taking care of their children as a responsibility and a priority.

“The resultant effect of all these is that the masses are hungry and angry, and are ready to survive whether by hook or by crook hence the rise in crime and social vices. Except we address the problems, Nigeria is sitting on a time bomb”.

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly who is also the Chairman of the Muslim Community, Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi congratulated the Muslim staff in the Oyo State House of Assembly on the 2022 Ramadan and for upholding and promoting the tenets of Islam even in their place of work.

No fewer than five guests returning from a traditional wedding ceremony in Anambra were on Monday night abducted by gunmen.

DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Anambra, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

Ikenga said that security personnel had launched a rescue operation to ensure that the victims were safely reunited with their families unhurt.

A reliable source had told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the guests were kidnapped at about 10.00 p.m. on their way home.

“The guests (names withheld) were kidnapped at gunpoint at about 10.00 p.m. on the Akpo – Nkpologwu road in Aguata Local Area of Anambra.

“About 15 of the guest were returning to the hotel from Achina, the venue of the marriage, in a convoy of three vehicles when they ran into the abductors, but only the first car was able to escape.

“The gunmen asked all the ladies to go and took five of the men away after shooting into the air,” the source explained.

The source added that the abductors were yet to make any contact with the victims’ families.

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Hon. Moshood Salvador, on Sunday said the health of the National Leader of the party and Presidential hopeful, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, declared presidential ambition.

He said Osinbajo contesting against Tinubu is good for the political development of the country.

He spoke with newsmen on the sidelines of his annual Ramadan Lecture/Zakat held at his Salvador towers Surulere Lagos.

According to him, there was nothing like betrayal that Osinbajo is contesting against Tinubu.

He said it would rather deepen the democratic experience of Nigeria and especially Lagos State where there is hardly no democracy.

Daily Trust reports that Salvador who is a leader of the Conscience Movement, a bloc within the APC, had expressed grievances over the outcome of the congresses of the party at the ward, local government and state congresses where members of his group were allegedly sidelined.

Salvador, a one-time Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state before defecting to APC, said, “Vice-President and Asiwaju coming out to contest is a very good political development.

“Hardly do we have real democracy in Lagos State. It is a democratic challenge to all the big wigs that are coming out. It is a fantastic development even for Asiwaju. You can see that his health improved immediately that he now calls himself a youth.

“You could see him at the stadium (yesterday) coming out to say what exactly he wants to do for Nigeria, you can see him talking to the masses. He was all the while talking to the Obas, talking to Mr. President. Mr. President has only one vote. President Muhammadu Buhari’s vote is not bigger than mine, my vote is not bigger than yours. Therefore you can see the mood,” he said.

Salvador also clarified that he chaired the event where Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State recently declared his presidential intention because he was invited as a leader of the party, saying it has nothing to do with ethnicity.

He said any aspirant can invite him as a mark of honour and respect.
