British Airways investigating website crash hours after Russia airspace ban

British Airways has said it is investigating and working hard to resolve a technical issue after its website appeared to be down, adding that it was still checking customers in and operating flights.

"We're investigating and working hard to resolve a technical issue and apologise for the inconvenience," it said in a statement.

"We will provide further updates as quickly as possible. We're operating flights and checking customers in."

Users on social media expressed their anger towards the airline.

British Airways cancels all short-haul flights from Heathrow over huge IT failure

British Airways has cancelled all short-haul flights from Heathrow until midday today because of what they call ongoing technical issues.

Last night, passengers first reported having problems as BA suffers another big outage, causing the website and app to fail and flights to be grounded.

The company said the issues, which may also cause delays for its customers using Gatwick and London City Airport, is related to a hardware issue and is not because of a cyber attack. grin

The major outage has caused cancellations and delays of flights, pile-ups of luggage and passengers stuck on planes after landing at Heathrow.

It said long-haul flights are still operating, but customers may experience some delays.

Now, they say they won't be flying short-haul until this afternoon.

In a statement, the airline said: "We are extremely sorry that due to the continuing technical issues we are facing we have regrettably had to cancel all short-haul flights from Heathrow today until midday.

"Customers due to travel later today should check their flight status on ba.com before coming to the airport as we anticipate further disruption during the day.

"Our long-haul services at Heathrow and all flights at Gatwick and London City Airport are due to operate as planned, but customers may experience some delays.

"Our website ba.com is working and customers can check-in online and at the airport.

"We are offering customers on cancelled services options including a full refund and all customers booked to travel on short-haul services from Heathrow today can opt to rebook to a later date for free if they choose. We will be contacting customers proactively.

"Our teams have been working hard through the night and will continue to do so to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We advise our customers due to travel today to check ba.com for the latest flight information before coming to the airport.

"We know we have let our customers down and we will do everything we can to make this up to them - but for now our focus is on getting as many customers and flights away as we can."

British Airways has been told it needs to be transparent about what is causing the technical problems that are resulting in flight cancellations, a travel expert has said.

Paul Charles, chief executive of travel consultancy The PC Agency, said: "Ongoing technical issues don't fill consumers with much confidence.

"Many people have saved up during lockdown to get away at the first opportunity and some are now finding that computers, not Covid, are preventing their getaway.

"BA needs to be transparent on what's causing these issues and how soon they will be fixed."

Heathrow Airport, meanwhile, said on Friday: “Heathrow's systems are operating as normal.

"We are aware of a technical issue that British Airways are investigating and we will be working with them to provide updates to passengers as soon as they are available.”

Last night, angry travellers took to twitter demanding to know what was going on.

One user posted: "Am at Heathrow. British Airways flights all grounded as the computers have piled in. BA’s screens have gone off but the main ones in the hall are still on. BA staff seem very chilled, no flapping."

Another said: "[Second] time in a week I’m sat on a plane going nowhere. This time an IT issue. No information coming out, no provisions on board. Not good enough."

A third posted at 8pm: "In T5 at LHR, all British Airways systems have been down for over an hour, all flights are grounded."

See the four Nigerian billionaires buying Shell, ExxonMobil, other foreign oil firms in Nigeria

Nigerian-owned oil companies have been the beneficiary of the wave of divestment by foreign players in the country’s oil market, buying up the assets to expand their operation.

The discontinuation of businesses by these foreign investors portrays Nigeria in a bad light in the global oil market and negatively affects the economy, as the government will struggle to lure new foreign investments.

However, it increases the number of Nigerian oil gurus in the front seat of Nigeria’s oil market, as they had played second fiddle to the expatriates before and after independence.

Four Nigerian billionaires buying foreign oil firms

Tony Elumelu:

Nigerian businessman, Tony Elumelu, had bought the asset of Shell in 2021, through his company, TNOG Oil and Gas Ltd, as the billionaire expanded his influence in the Nigerian economy.

But Elumelu is not new to the merger & acquisition market, having led the acquisition of Crystal Bank, which was renamed Standard Trust Bank. He also facilitated the merger of United Bank for Africa (UBA), where he acts as chairman.

The graduate of Ambrose Alli University also owns an indirect share in United Capital, which was previously under UBA. His investment also stretches into the hospitality business through Transcorp Hotels, as well as electricity firm, Transcorp Ughelli Power Limited.

Sayyu I. Dantata:

He is the half-brother of Africa’s richest person, Aliko Dangote, working with his sibling as Director of Engineering and Transport Division, Dangote Group.

Dantata acquired Chevron’s upstream business, OMLs 83 and 85 in 2015, through his oil company, MRS Holdings, where he serves as Group Chief Executive Officer.

He’s the largest shareholder of MRS, with operations in Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, Cameroon, as well as Cote D’Ivoire.

ABC Orjiako:
https://i0.wp.com/www.ripplesnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ABC-Orjiakor.jpeg?w=650&ssl=1

The Chairman and co-founder of Seplat, also joined the list of domestic businessmen eyeing assets of struggling foreign oil majors, having purchased Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited from Exxon Mobil this month – the deal awaits regulatory approval.

Orjiako has been involved in several controversial issues, from Malabu to a court battle with Zenith Bank and Access Bank. Amid these controversies, he is to step down from his chairmanship position.

Michael Adenuga:
https://i0.wp.com/www.ripplesnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Mike-Adenuga.jpg?w=650&ssl=1

Adenuga is quite popular in the telecommunications sector, but silent in the oil and gas sector. He is the founder of Globacom, the second largest telco in Nigeria.

His oil company, Conoil Plc, is the firm said to be leading the bidding process for Chevron’s upstream business, OMLs 86 and 88.

But a passerby, who noticed the suspicious movement of the suspect, called the attention of the mother who then raised alarm.

“Upon the distress call, the Dpo Odeda division, CSP Femi Olabode quickly mobilized his men in conjunction with so safe corps men and moved to the scene.

“The suspect was chased to the bush where he was arrested and the child rescued from him.

“On interrogation, Alani confessed to the crime, he informed the police that he came to the area with two women who are his accomplices.

“Alani explained further that he had previously stolen two children from Egbeda in Lagos and Akute area of Ogun state.

“According to him, once he succeeded in stealing a child, he will hand such child to the two women who will give him the sum of eighty thousand naira,” Oyeyemi said.
