Politics › Lai Mohammed: FG To Launch Campaign Against Ritual Killings by NwaNimo1(op): 11:09pm On Feb 21, 2022 |
‘It is worrisome’ — FG to launch campaign against ritual killingsLai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, says the federal government will soon commence a national sensitisation campaign against ritual killings in the country.
The minister said this on Monday during a visit to the Daily Trust office in Abuja.
TheCable had reported how young people seek traditional charms, mystical powers and ritual killings in their quest to make money via social media platforms.
A recent report by the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) notes that 150 women and girls were killed for ritual purposes between January 2018 and December 2021.
Speaking on the development, Mohammed expressed concern over the rising cases of ritual killings in the country, adding that the government needs to take urgent steps to address the situation.
“Our visit today is coming at a time of great concern across the country over the rising cases of ritual murders by unscrupulous people, most of them very young, who are seeking to get rich at all cost. We have therefore decided to use this opportunity to begin the process of raising national awareness on this scourge,” he said.
“The National Orientation Agency (NOA), an agency under our ministry, is already partnering with religious and traditional organisations as well as NGOs to forge behavioural change, especially among the youth, some of whom are afflicted by the get-rich-quick syndrome.
“In the days ahead, the federal government plans to launch a national sensitisation campaign against ritual murders. Ahead of that, however, we are calling on the media to please lend their strong voices to efforts to stamp out this growing menace.
“For those who may still be in doubt, ritual killings have assumed a worrisome dimension in recent years. The fact that some of these ritualists said they learnt the money-making tricks from some social media platforms has given a further fillip to our campaign to rid social media of unwholesome content.
“Call it social media regulation or whatever, no serious nation today will allow its social media space to be suffused with dangerous content. As we have said many times, we have no intention to stifle the media or constrict the social media space. But we will not relent in our efforts to ensure a responsible use of the social media
“Many have also blamed Nollywood for featuring money rituals in some of its movies, saying this has negatively influenced the vulnerable youth. To mitigate this, I have directed the National Film and Video Censors Board, the body set up to regulate the film and video industry in Nigeria, to take this issue into consideration while performing its role of censoring and classifying films and videos.
“I have also directed NFVCB to engage with stakeholders in the film industry in order to express the concerns of the government and Nigerians on the need to eschew money ritual content in their movies. https://www.thecable.ng/it-has-assumed-worrisome-dimension-fg-to-launch-campaign-against-ritual-killings

Politics › Amaechi: Kano To Host Nigeria’s Biggest Rail Station by NwaNimo1(op): 10:41pm On Feb 21, 2022 |
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says Kano State will house the biggest rail station in the country.
The minister said this when a delegation from Kano, led by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, visited him in Abuja to discuss the rail and Dala inland dry port in the State.
“We have two major projects we want to do in Kano; the first being the standard gauge from Kano to Kaduna.
“We are applying to Kano State Government to give us land to build the biggest station in Nigeria.
“It is the biggest station because we are combining two rail lines.
“The first is the Kano-Maradi which will empty in Kano and then the second one is Kano-Kaduna which will also empty in Kano.
“Don’t forget, the station we are building in Kano will be the station that will take passengers from Lagos to Kano.
“If you combine Kano-Maradi and Lagos-Kano, you will know that the volume of passengers you will get in a week will be about a million passengers.” https://independent.ng/kano-to-host-nigerias-biggest-rail-station-says-amaechi/

Politics › Middle-belt Deserves To Produce Next President, Says Fani-kayode by NwaNimo1(op): 10:32pm On Feb 21, 2022 |
Nigeria’s north-central region deserves a chance to produce the next president, said former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode. Fani-Kayode, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated this on Monday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. Although he said he no longer believes in the emergence of a president based on zoning, he stated that such a person should come from the middle-belt or south-east region, preferably the former. “I am not a big believer in zoning anymore,” said the former minister. “I believe that zoning could actually cause more problems … but if you insist on zoning, I believe it should go to a zone that has never had it before – the middle-belt has never had it, the south-east has never had it. “The middle-belt has never had a democratically elected president, or a democratically elected vice president, while the eastern zone has had a democratically elected vice president.” In the quest to find a successor for President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the 2023 elections, there have been a series of debates within the two major political parties in the country – the APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But governors from the South, comprising the south-west, south-east, and south-south, had gone beyond party divide to demand that the office be zoned to the region. Having supported the north-central to produce the next president, Fani-Kayode believes Nigeria needs a young and strong leader. For him, one of the candidates he deems to be most qualified to occupy the highest office in the land is Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. “Great candidate,” he said at the mention of the governor whom he described as his friend. “It is a progressive thing for me and in my view, I believe strongly that you just don’t get up and hold on to things, you have to look at the situation you have on the ground. “There are people who will disagree with me in the party or outside the party, but I believe that the situation we are in now requires a strong person that can move the country forward decisively with energy and power, and I don’t think we should limit ourselves to any particular zone.” https://www.channelstv.com/2022/02/21/middle-belt-deserves-to-produce-next-president-says-fani-kayode/https://www.channelstv.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Governor-Bello.jpg |
