Nigeria’s north-central region deserves a chance to produce the next president, said former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

Fani-Kayode, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated this on Monday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Although he said he no longer believes in the emergence of a president based on zoning, he stated that such a person should come from the middle-belt or south-east region, preferably the former.

“I am not a big believer in zoning anymore,” said the former minister. “I believe that zoning could actually cause more problems … but if you insist on zoning, I believe it should go to a zone that has never had it before – the middle-belt has never had it, the south-east has never had it.

“The middle-belt has never had a democratically elected president, or a democratically elected vice president, while the eastern zone has had a democratically elected vice president.”

In the quest to find a successor for President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the 2023 elections, there have been a series of debates within the two major political parties in the country – the APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But governors from the South, comprising the south-west, south-east, and south-south, had gone beyond party divide to demand that the office be zoned to the region.

Having supported the north-central to produce the next president, Fani-Kayode believes Nigeria needs a young and strong leader.

For him, one of the candidates he deems to be most qualified to occupy the highest office in the land is Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.

“Great candidate,” he said at the mention of the governor whom he described as his friend. “It is a progressive thing for me and in my view, I believe strongly that you just don’t get up and hold on to things, you have to look at the situation you have on the ground.

“There are people who will disagree with me in the party or outside the party, but I believe that the situation we are in now requires a strong person that can move the country forward decisively with energy and power, and I don’t think we should limit ourselves to any particular zone.”

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has threatened it would soon direct workers in statutory corporations and government-owned companies to stop going to work if the challenge of fuel scarcity across the country persists for the next few days.

The Congress also demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari swing into action by identifying and punishing those who caused the scarcity that has brought untold hardship upon Nigerians.

National Treasurer of TUC, Mohammad Yunusa, stated these during an interview in Abuja at the weekend on the sideline of the delegate conference of the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC).

Yunusa, who was also the immediate past President-General of SSASCGOC, explained that members of his association have already been directed to stay at their respective homes pending when there will be a regular supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly called petrol.

He said: ”The union’s position is very clear. Those who caused this scarcity should be identified and punished very well. The position of SSASCGOC also is that, you know we are affiliated to TUC, and we have made it known to TUC that let the workers stop going to work until there is enough fuel to take them to work.

”This is the way to do it. We are waiting for our centre to respond to our position but our position in SSASCGOC is that there is no need to go to work. Hang around in your house. When the fuel, the one they are saying billion of litres of petrol is coming, when it comes, and there is regular supply, then we will start going to work.”

The union leader, while commenting on a one-month strike embarked upon by members of ASUU, also berated the Federal Government over its lackadaisical attitude towards education systems in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

He stressed that the Federal Government had on many occasions signed Memorandum of Understanding with many unions without fulfilling its promises at the end of the day.

According to him: ”The major problem unionism has in Nigeria is that the governments do not listen. You can’t have constructive engagements with the government in Nigeria.”

He added: ”Let’s look at the case of ASUU, they are talking about the agreement they entered with the Federal Government many years back, and up till now, the government has not fulfilled it.

”So, over the years, because there is no constructive engagements, it is when you call out your members for strike that government will listen to you.”

- The Nigerian military has killed and wounded children in an airstrike in neighbouring Niger, a local governor in Niger, state television and an aid agency said on Sunday, although Nigeria's armed forces said they were still investigating.

The attack took place in the village of Nachadé in the region of Maradi, Niger, on Friday, a few kilometres from the border with Nigeria, said Chaibou Aboubacar, the governor of Maradi. He said seven children were killed and five wounded.

He did not say how he knew that Nigerian forces carried out the attack. Niger's state television also said it was carried out by Nigerian forces, without providing evidence.

"As a matter of policy, the Nigerian Air Force does not make any incursions into areas outside Nigeria's territorial boundaries. That's our policy," Major General Jimmy Akpor, Nigeria's Director of Defence Information, said. He said an investigation was underway.

Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres, which cared for some of the wounded, confirmed the strike. It said that 12 people died, including four children. Local inhabitants told MSF that Nigerian forces were pursuing targets who had fled a border town.

The specific reason for the strike was not clear. It occurred in a region where banditry is common and where both governments fear that Islamist insurgents linked to Islamic State are gaining ground.
