Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has supported decision by the Federal Government to privatise some of its assets.
The assets include refineries, the International Conference Centre in Abuja, Yola Electricity Distribution Company, Zungeru Hydro Power, Tafawa Belewa Square, among others.
A total of N493.4bn is expected to be earned from the sale of the assets which were classified under energy assets, industries and communication department as well as development institutions and natural resources.
In a statement titled ‘Privatisation of Refineries and Other Assets: Better Late Than Never,’ Atiku however demanded transparency in the process.
He expressed delight that the privatisation of public assets which he once championed and was scorned for by the All Progressives Congress-led administration is now being embraced by the same administration.
He said: “For decades, I have championed the privatisation of our economy and full deregulation of our oil and gas sector, amongst other sectors, for greater service delivery and efficiency.
“As chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, I advanced these policies which saw our economy achieve 6% GDP growth and created jobs for the masses of our people and amass the national wealth that enabled us exit the debt trap, and secure our financial independence.
“Even though my ideas were scorned by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government over the years, I am nevertheless most fulfilled that an administration that once failed to see the wisdom in these sound economic policies, is now facing reality and has now embraced reason, by announcing the privatisation of our refineries and other assets, which have not always prospered under public management.
“It is always better late than never. And I commend the Federal Government for coming on board. I urge that the privatisation process be as transparent as possible, as that is the only way to ensure that Nigeria reaps the greatest economic benefits from this policy.
“It was never about me. My interest has always been the peace, prosperity and progress of Nigeria, and I am happy to share these ideas, and others, with the government of the day, for the betterment of our nation and its people.”
Anxiety in Ogun as herdsmen write 8 Ogun communities, plot fresh attacks after Abiodun's visit to Buhari
Amid ethnic tension in Ogun over the farmer-herder crisis, Fulani herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah have written to some communities in the state, telling them to expect fresh attacks. The paramount ruler of Yewaland and the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, made this fear-instilling disclosure when some governors from the north paid a visit to his palace.
It would be recalled that Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Sani Bello of Niger, Muhammed Matawalle of Zamfara, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state paid a visit to Ogun over the ensuing violence taking ethnic colouration in the state.
Herdsmen have written Ogun communities over fresh attacks. Their visit came after suspected Fulani herders attacked Igbooro, Oja-Odan in Yewa North local government area, leading to the death of two villagers. The suspected herdsmen reportedly invaded the village close to Eggua in Oja-Odan, setting ablaze three houses and storehouses. Nigerian soldiers have overrun a farm allegedly owned by Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, in the Sambisa forest, just as the military troops successfully repelled ISWAP terrorists who attacked Dikwa town on Friday evening.
In a video obtained by PRNigeria, the troops stormed the farm in the Sambisa axis and invited some locals to help themselves with edibles before destroying the farm.
The troops could be heard mocking the sect leader and asking him to come out from the hiding.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian troops in Dikwa after repelling the attack by ISWAP nabbed two men suspected to be terrorist informants living in the community.
PRNigeria had reported the damning activities of local informants who are actively sabotaging the efforts of Nigerian troops by revealing their position and movements to the terrorists.
An intelligence source told PRNigeria that the terrorists invaded a military Super Camp unit on the northern axis of the town on several light trucks mounted with Heavy Machine Guns (HMGs).
“The terrorists suspected to be aided by informants approached the base from two axes.
“One of the groups attacked from the northern axis towards Marte road, while the other group approached the base from the north-eastern axis towards Gajibo road.
“The troops on the ground had got a signal of the attempted invasion and retreated to Ajiri Community in the Southern axis, where they relaunched counter-attacks with troops from Gulumba.
“A Ground Force Close Air Support (CAS) component deployed also attacked the terrorists from the air destroying their guntrucks and makeshift camps.”
PRNigeria further gathered that the terrorists are coordinating their recent attacks from their new base in Andakar with some commanders and mercenaries from neighbouring countries.
