Travel › Arik Air Keeps Mum On AMCON’s Planned International Airline by NwaNimo1(op): 9:56pm On Jan 17, 2021
Indigenous debt-ridden airline, Arik Air, has refused to speak on the move by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria to use its aviation assets especially planes to launch a multibillion naira airline.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported that the new international airline planned by AMCON, to be named Nigeria Eagle, may take to the sky with at least 10 planes as early as June, according to insiders.

It was also learnt that AMCON, a Federal Government-owned bad debt manager which owns controlling stakes in both Arik and Aero Contractors, chose to establish the new airline as a clever means of wriggling out of the multibillion naira liabilities currently hanging on the two carriers.

The debts are believed to be hindering new buyers from showing interest in the two carriers which AMCON has been willing to sell to new investors.

Arik Air is said to owe up to N300bn in debt, one which experts have said it is impossible to defray quickly even if the airline pays N10bn yearly.

AMCON was established by the Federal Government in 2010 to buy over bad debts from commercial banks in order to save the banking system from imminent collapse. This followed the 2009 financial industry crisis in the country.

Arik Air’s Public Relations and Communications Manager, Banji Ola, however, refused to speak on the matter but directed our correspondent to speak with AMCON.

When asked on Sunday whether the airline was aware of the development, the spokesman said, “Ask AMCON. AMCON is the one floating the carrier. Once you get its reaction, you don’t need to get anything from me.”

Meanwhile, AMCON is expected to make an official statement on the deal very soon.

But experts have opined that the new airline would be greeted with lots of litigations as the original owners of the fleets would kick against the development.

Arik Air, which was founded in 2002 by its Chairman, Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide, grew its fleet size to over 22 planes and was travelling to over 16 destinations before it was taken over by AMCON in February 2017. The airline has also sacked hundreds of workers in the last few months.

Crime › Two Cemetery Guards In Amotekun Net Over Alleged Possession Of Human Heads by NwaNimo1(op): 9:40pm On Jan 17, 2021
Two cemetery guards were on Sunday arrested by men of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, otherwise known as Amotekun Corps for alleged possession of human heads.

The two cemetery guards were said to be workers at a cemetery belonging to an old generation church in Surulere Area of Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of the state.

Residents of the area alleged that the suspects had been tampering with corpses buried in the cemetery where they guard.

One of the residents who craved anonymity disclosed that one of the security guards simply identified as Alhaji was apprehended with a bag containing the heads of dead bodies by those living in the area.

The source said, “Today (Sunday) somebody went to defecate in a bush beside the cemetery and he saw Alhaji with a sledgehammer and he broke one of the tombs in the cemetery. After some minutes he came out with a bag.

“So the person that saw him raised the alarm and we rushed to the scene. When we checked the bag Alhaji carried, we saw a human head in the bag.

“When we went around the cemetery, we discovered that about 44 tombs have no dead bodies inside them, they have been exhumed by ritualists. So we have handed them over to the Amotekun corps.” shocked

Confirming the development, the Commander of Amotekun in the State, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, stated that the two suspects were rescued when the residents were about to lynch them.

The Amotekun Commander, however, said human heads were not found on the suspects upon arrest.

He said, “The suspects were rescued by our men when the residents were about to kill them. We have handed them over to the police.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Tee- Leo Ikoro said the suspects had not been handed over to the police.

Politics › Buhari, Osinbajo To Spend ₦3.4 Billion On Feeding, Travels in 2021 by NwaNimo1(op): 12:22pm On Jan 17, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will spend N3.4 billion on feeding and travel expenses.

While Mr Buhari approved about N2.6 billion of the amount for his office, about N873 million was earmarked for Mr Osinbajo’s office.

As in the last five years, travel expenses will take the largest chunk of these expenses, details of the approved budget for the year reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES show.

The same amount was approved for the offices of the first two citizens of the country in 2020. Both offices received less but still significantly high allocations in the four preceding years.

Travels and feeding gulped N1.5 billion in 2019; N1.52 billion in 2018; in 2017, N1.45 billion; and N1.43 billion in 2016.

Presidential travels will gulp N2.4 billion: N775.6 million for local trips and N1.7 billion for international journeys.

On the other hand, Mr Osinbajo will spend N801 million on his travels for the year – N284 million locally and N517.1 million outside the shores of the country.

Meanwhile, the meal bill for the offices of President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo has been pegged at N195.5 million. shocked

The first family will spend N124 million.

This is the same amount that was approved for the president in each of the last three years. In 2017, N115 million was spent on feeding, while in 2016 N103 million was spent for the same purpose, analysis of the budget for the last five years shows.

Of the N124 million approved for this year, foodstuff and catering materials supplies will gulp N98.3 million, while refreshment and meals will take N25.7 million.

The second family also retained what it spent on feeding in each of the last three years – N71.5 million – this year.

This is decrease from the N88.9 million spent in 2018, but an increase from the meal bills in 2017, N53.7 million, and N24 million in 2016.

Foodstuff and catering materials supplies will account for N50.9 million; refreshment and meals, N18.3 million; and cooking gas and fuel, N2.4 million.

Politics › NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake COVID-19 Vaccine In Nigeria by NwaNimo1(op): 5:53pm On Jan 16, 2021
• Cautions FG, Corporate Agencies Against Ordering Vaccine Without Approval
• Insists NAFDAC Must Give Go Ahead For Vaccine Usage In Nigeria, Despite WHO Approval
• Agency To Track, Trace, Monitor Vaccine Distribution With Technology

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned the public to be wary of using the fake COVID-19 vaccines circulating in Nigeria, saying they can cause COVID-like illnesses and other serious diseases that could kill.

Director General of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who raised the alarm, also warned government establishments and agencies, as well as private companies and big corporation, against ordering the vaccines without its approval, noting that COVID-19 vaccines are new and the side effects or adverse events must be well monitored; hence should not be used by the public.

Adeyeye, while briefing journalists on the safety of the vaccines via Zoom, said companies that manufacture the vaccines know they have to submit their application to NAFDAC if they are genuine, adding that the regulatory agency has not received any application from any manufacturers yet.

“There are reports of fake vaccines in Nigeria and these vaccines can cause COVID-like illnesses or other serious diseases that could kill. No government establishment or agencies, company or corporation should order COVID-19 vaccines without confirming from NAFDAC if the vaccines have been approved.

“COVID-19 vaccines are new and the side effects or adverse events must be well monitored. Therefore, if NAFDAC does not approve, the public should not use,” she insisted.

Recall that the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19 had earlier said Nigeria would take delivery of the first phase of 100,000 doses of the Pfizer and BioNTech approved COVID-19 vaccines by the end of this month, with the Federal Government planning to begin administering of the COVID-19 vaccine on Nigerians before the end of March.

According to the PTF, Nigeria also expects to receive free 42 million doses of vaccines in the second phase through the COVAX facility being administered by the Global Vaccines Alliance (GAVI.)

But reacting to the expected vaccines, Adeyeye said Nigeria would only take delivery and begin administering of the vaccines when NAFDAC gives approval and green light for use, as there are administrative work that needs to be done.

On NAFDAC meeting up with the process of approval before the timeline of delivery by the end of this month, Adeyeye said there are ongoing paper works to ensure the timeline is met, noting that incase there is a delay, it should be ready in a week or two weeks (February).

She said despite approval for the use of the vaccines by the World Health Organisation (WHO), they would not be used in Nigeria, except they are approved by her agency, noting that NAFDAC was discussing with manufactures of candidate COVID-19 vaccines concerning potential Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA), registration or licensing of their product, while assuring applicants that if Phase 3 clinical data are very convincing and robust, with regards to safety and efficacy, and the vaccine has been submitted to WHO for Emergency Use Listing, NAFDAC would welcome the application for EUA in Nigeria.

Adeyeye said the agency would use “Reliance” or “Recognition” to expedite EUA for vaccines already approved by more matured regulatory authorities, adding that the full dossier submitted by the manufacturer or Market Authorisation Holder (MAH) would be thoroughly reviewed by the Vaccine Committee made up of multiple directorates of NAFDAC, which are the Drug Registration and Regulatory Affairs, Drug Evaluation and Research, Pharmacovigilance and Post Marketing Surveillance, Drug, Biologics and Vaccines Laboratory Services.

She said safety of the vaccine is premium to NAFDAC hence active pharmacovigilance is being used, adding that the Phase 4 pharmacovigilance is one of the core regulatory activities of the agency.

The NAFDAC boss explained that the agency has been preparing for the vaccines and vaccination since the early phase of the pandemic around April last year, noting that despite the use of “Reliance” for the EUA, it would note clinical peculiarities in form of Serious or Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFIs) in the dossier or application as a guide and caution for what to look out for in each subject after immunisation, that is, during the active pharmacovigilance phase, where monitoring of adverse events would be conducted.

Adeyeye stated that the agency has been training its staff for this very important aspect of the immunization, and has established COVID-19 Vaccine Committee, which has been busy developing the guidelines and guidance, adding that NAFDAC is the first national regulatory agency in Africa to have Guidance on Regulatory Preparedness for EUA, Licensing or Access to COVID-19 Vaccines

She said NAFDAC has initiated multi-stakeholder collaboration with National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), UNICEF, WHO and the Federal Ministry of Health to use a holistic approach for the effective immunisation or delivery of the vaccines and monitor any AEFI.

Adeyeye added that the agency would also use its recently launched free Med Safety App for Active Pharmacovigilance of the vaccines, in collaboration with sister agencies.

Speaking on tracking and tracing of the vaccines, Adeyeye disclosed that NAFDAC would use the traceability with GS1 technology to monitor the vaccine distribution, using Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) to prevent fake vaccines from infiltrating the supply chain and ensure there is no diversion.

She said the effort would create a reliable and predictable supply chain, as the multi-stakeholder technical working group has been meeting to address different issues, from access to distribution to traceability (track and trace) of the vaccines to monitoring of adverse events following immunisation.

Ngige secures release of Anambra indigenes from Suleja prison

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has secured the release of Olisa and Onyeka Eze from the Suleja Correctional Centre, Niger state.

They regained their freedom on Friday.

The two princes of Ukpo kingdom who hail from Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State were allegedly detained for three months over a business misunderstanding with billionaire businessman, Prince Arthur Eze.

A statement from the minister’s media office said their release from the correctional centre followed the intervention of Sen Ngige.

According to the statement, the released princes later visited the minister’s office to commend him for the intervention.

They were accompanied on the visit by an official from the correctional centre, Mr Abdul Rahman Musa, and friends.

The Ukpo princes hailed Ngige for being “a humanist who stands against injustice and a worthy in-law of the Ukpo community.”

The statement added: “We spent months in prison. We spent our Christmas and New year in detention away from our loved ones, in harsh conditions over false charges. We are ever grateful to Sen. Ngige who took interest in the matter and facilitated our freedom.”

Politics › ISWAP Terrorists Seize Military Base In Borno by NwaNimo1(op): 3:26pm On Jan 16, 2021
Jihadists aligned with the Islamic State militant group have captured a military base in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state after overnight clashes with troops, sources told AFP on Saturday.

Machine-gun wielding fighters from Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked the base in the town of Marte in the Lake Chad area overnight Friday into Saturday, two sources said.

“The priority now is to reclaim the base from the terrorists and an operation is underway,” one of the sources said.

“We took a hit from ISWAP terrorists. They raided the base in Marte after a fierce battle.”

The second source said the army “incurred losses” but it was not yet clear how many people had died or the level of destruction inflicted by the insurgents.

ISWAP, which split from Boko Haram in 2016, maintains camps on islands in Lake Chad — where Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad meet — and the area is known to be group’s bastion.

Last week, the jihadists attacked the Marte base but were repelled, prompting them to mobilise more fighters for the overnight raid, said the sources.

The raid was seen as a “fightback” after recent losses — troops recently overran ISWAP’s second largest camp in Talala village, said the sources.

In November last year, officials began the phased return of residents to Marte six years after they were pushed out by the jihadists.

The town, 130 kilometres (80 miles) from the regional capital Maiduguri, was once considered the breadbasket of the Lake Chad region.

At least 36,000 people have been killed in the jihadist conflict since 2009 and violence has spread into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a regional military coalition.
