The Lagos State Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Alhaji Musilu Akinsanya known as Mc-Oluomo, has described the attack on security agents on Lagos Abeokuta Expressway by unidentified motorcycle operators on Wednesday as barbaric, uncalled for and an affront on security agents who are on legal duties in the state. Akinsanya made the comments in a statement while reacting to attacks on Operative of Lagos Taskforce Officials and other security agents at Ikeja along on Lagos Abeokuta Expressway by Motorcycle Operators popularly called Okada riders. It would be recalled that some taskforce officials were also attacked yesterday on Tuesday at the Rainbow Bus stop, along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway by the motorcycle operators on that axis. Akinsanya said that the NURTW members across the state are law-abiding citizens who will never disobey the traffic rules and regulations of the state, saying the Okada riders under NURTW have been warned several times against riding bikes on restricted routes, highways, bridges and roads across the state and that the units chairmen are always on hand at various parks to ensure compliance with the law guiding their operations. The NURTW boss said bike men who ply the highways, restricted routes and roads were not bonafide members of Motorcycle Operators’ Association of Lagos State (MOALS) but individuals who dabble into the business for their daily survival. He advised the security agents to decisively deal with okada riders caught in the act of plying the restricted routes. “It is an offence to pass restricted routes and the union stands by the government directives on operations of motorcycles in the state,” Akinsanya stated. He added: “On several occasions, our taskforce would arrest those plying restricted routes and their bikes are usually seized from them. We have many seized bikes in our office at Agege. “In most cases, some people would wear a T-shirt which indicates that they are members of paramilitary, and if you dare them, they begin to threaten our task force and we have warned our people against plying highways, restricted routes, bridges and roads. Our members are law-abiding, they are satisfied with the little amount they make in inner routes and roads. “In our weekly meeting with chairmen of MOALS across Local Government Areas in the state, it has become a tradition since I assumed office to read out restricted routes to our members with a view to preventing them from plying those areas.” Akinsanya insisted that those driving motorcycles on highways may be either private business persons or security agents who usually take advantage of the situation to carry passengers with their motorcycles as they go to the places of their works. He said that members of Taskforce of Motorcycle Operators’ Association of Lagos State, last week, were also attacked by hoodlums riding okada on highways and routes in the course of enforcing restrictions on the highway and other restricted routes. While reiterating the need to support Lagos State Government in preventing motorcycles from plying restricted routes, Akinsanya called for the synergy between NURTW, security agents and other relevant stakeholders in dealing with the erring okada riders who take laws into their hands and plying restricted routes in the state. “I can assure you, we will continue to work with security agents and other relevant stakeholders in enforcing the restriction. We will support Lagos State in restoring sanity to our roads. Our task force has joined security agents to impound anyone that rides on restricted routes,” he said. The NURTW Chairman, however, appealed to members of the public to stop patronising the okada riders who operate on highways, saying riding okada on highways is amounts to a risk of lives and property. https://dailypost.ng/2020/11/18/lagos-nurtw-condemns-attacks-on-security-agents-by-motorcycle-operators/ |

Breastfeeding Will Save 103,000 Children, Generate N6.6trn Income Annually, Says UNICEF https://tribuneonlineng.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Breastfeeding-3.jpg United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that Nigeria has revealed that lives of 103,742 children from death annually while an additional income of N8 trillion ($21 billion) or 4.1 per cent of GDP would be generated for the economy when women breastfeed their children. At a sensitization workshop for journalists on basic nutritional issues as part of activities to mark the Nutrition Week 2020 in Abuja on Wednesday, it was also revealed that through this, an additional 10 million case of childhood diarrhoea and pneumonia which would be prevented when women breastfeed their children exclusively for six months and continuously for the first three years of their lives. According to findings from the Nigeria Study on Cost of not Breastfeeding by UNICEF and Alive&Thrive, Nigerian families also spend N14.4 billion ($38 million) on the purchase of baby formula every year. Mrs Toyin Gabriel, one of the facilitators disclosed that Nigeria is the largest consumer of baby formula after China and that some of the formulas were not approved by NAFDAC because they are imported illegally and so dangerous for babies. Mrs Chime Thompson from the Federal Ministry of Health said explained that every nutritional need of a baby is contained in breastmilk and that a woman’s body adjusts to the needs of the child according to its age. Quoting the World Health Organisation, Thompson said that infant formula should be given to a baby only on doctor’s prescription, otherwise, it should be fed exclusively on breastmilk for the first six months and continuously for three years but that Nigeria adjusted this to first two years of life. She said “every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-five-year-olds and 145 women of childbearing age. This makes the country the second-largest contributor to the under-five and maternal mortality in the world.” She enumerated immediate drivers of malnutrition to include inadequate food intake, lack of dietary diversity and infectious diseases while underlying drivers are food insecurity, inadequate child and maternal care, poor access to health services and unhealthy environment. To underscore the extent of malnutrition in Nigeria, Thompson stated that 12 million children are stunted, 2.6 million are wasted and that the highest number of stunted children in Nigeria are in Nigeria. While one in two children are stunted in the northeast and north-west, one in five children are stunted in the southern zones. She also disclosed that malnutrition is associated with 50 per cent of deaths among Nigerian children. She revealed that although there is a national plan of action on implementing the nutritional intervention, poor funding has not allowed this to be effective as only 0.02 per cent of the national budget is invested on nutrition while the Global Nutrition Report 2017 recommended four per cent. https://tribuneonlineng.com/breastfeeding-will-save-103000-children-generate-n6-6trn-income-annually-says-unicef/ |

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Friday rejected the Federal Government’s decision to deduct funds accrued to the states on behalf of state judiciaries. Wike, according to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, stated this during a special court session organised to mark the opening of the 2020/2021 legal year for the state’s judiciary. He described the move as illegal, saying it would hamper the independence of the judiciary if implemented. Wike insisted that the Federal Government’s action was another clear breach of the constitutional powers of the governors to manage state resources in a federal system. According to him, the independence of the judiciary was not only about finances, but the ability of the judicial officers to write judgments without the fear of being harassed by officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) or the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). The governor said: “The Federal Government cannot legitimately claim to be more interested in the progress of state judiciaries than the Governors of the respective states; particularly, Rivers State.” https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/fgs-move-to-deduct-state-funds-for-judiciary-illegal-wike/ |

Senate President Ahmad Lawan yesterday said Nigeria is on the path of economic growth despite prevailing challenges. Lawan spoke at the Nigeria/International Monetary Fund (IMF) Article lV Consultation virtual exercise, according to a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, in Abuja. He said the exercise was a “veritable platform to share our experiences on steering our economy on the path of growth, despite challenges.” Lawan listed efforts being made by the Federal Government at promoting economic growth and reducing poverty in the country. He told the participants at the virtual exercise that the country had to confront the challenge of limited resources, not just because of unpredictable revenue from oil, but also because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The problems have made us improve our efforts in the prudent management of resources, and in transparency and accountability. “Our focus has been on sustaining investments in infrastructure and utilities, trusting in their capacities to stimulate economic activities, enhance growth, and thereafter improve the people’s standard of living. “Government has continued with its anti-corruption crusade, aside a pledge to ensure discipline in the public expenditure process. “Our recent experiences call for further caution in the management of resources, just as it has been another reminder of the need to increase the drive for diversification. “Beyond Oil, greater regard is now being paid to the steel, the mining and the agriculture sectors. The potentials in these sectors are significant for revenue generation, and for job creation. They are additionally valuable in the bid to engage critical sections of the population, especially the youth,” Lawan said. Lawan said the youth question had lately been at the centre of national conversation, flowing from the #EndSARS protests. “We believe that the recent crisis we had in the form of youth protest has also given us an additional idea of how much we need to pay attention to the needs of the youths in the country. “Government has ended SARS, and now taking steps towards improving social and economic needs of youth. “One of such is the re-launch/flag off of the National Young Farmers Scheme (NYFS), by the President on November 9, 2020. “Our youth have become much more involved, and require greater recognition, in terms of social and economic engagement. “The government has been additionally charged to continue with policies that seek to integrate them into the scheme of things. “In addition to NYFS is the National Youth Innovation Programme an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development which has capacity to generate 25 Billion annually over the next three years; among others. “We prioritize implementation, to show a sustained commitment to policies and programmes,” Lawan said. He said the National Assembly had been as responsive as possible in the provision of legislative support to people-oriented proposals. “This is in line with our resolve to safeguard social, economic and political stability, through value-adding actions. “We have similarly been focused on timing of processes like the annual budget, to make it more predictable, and organised. “Presently, we are in the middle of resolving the long-standing Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), consistent with our determination to pass Bills with caution and precision. “We are sustaining this path of timeliness, to eliminate avoidable delays in the legislative and governance processes. “Added to this is our commitment to our oversight functions, to ensure that implementation is in tandem with our economic vision. “The goal of the administration is therefore hinged around a productive economy, a sustainable growth, and the reduction of poverty. “We prepare our budgets towards executing the National Plan for economic progress, for the good of the people. We are dedicated to this, and we welcome support, meant for their successes,” Lawan said. He said the 2021 budget currently being processed by the National Assembly is aimed at addressing the prevailing challenges including unemployment. “I believe we are on the right path. The budget estimates presented to us at the National Assembly have been designed in such a way that job opportunities will be created for more Nigerians to be engaged in productive activities,” Lawan said. https://thenationonlineng.net/lawan-to-imf-nigeria-on-growth-path/ |
