Business › China’s Richest person is a 'Pure Water' Tycoon by NwaNimo1(op): 10:22pm On Oct 07, 2020
The richest person is China is a bottled water tycoon, knocking Alibaba founder Jack Ma from his mantle.

Zhong Shanshan founded Nongfu Spring in 1996 in the Zhejiang province on China's Eastern coast.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index now puts Mr Shanshan in top spot with wealth of $58.7bn (£46.2bn).

The recent stock market listing of his bottled water firm and a controlling stake in a vaccine maker have helped boost his fortunes.

Nicknamed the "Lone Wolf", Mr Zhong is now Asia's second-richest person behind India's Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire behind Reliance Industries.

Mr Zhong now ranks 17th overall on its list of the world's top 500 richest people.

Most of China's new billionaires come from the tech industry. But rising tensions between China and the US over Huawei, TikTok and WeChat have pushed down valuations of Chinese tech stocks.

China's food and grocery sector is now vying with its tech industry in producing the country's richest business people.

In April, Mr Zhong's Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise listed on the Chinese stock market. His controlling stake in the firm saw his overall wealth jump as much as $20bn by August.

The pharma company says it has partnered with two universities to develop a candidate vaccine to fight Covid-19.

Red caps
Nongfu Spring shares jumped 54% on the first day of trading earlier this month when they were listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Nongfu Spring's red-capped bottles are sold nationwide from small stores to high-end hotels. The company also sells teas, flavoured vitamin drinks and juices.

The successful stock market listing propelled Mr Zhong into China's top three richest people alongside Alibaba's Mr Ma and Tencent boss Pony Ma.

But this week's downturn for tech stocks saw the Chinese tycoon move up the wealth rankings.

Mr Zhong may not stay ahead of Mr Ma, who has held the top spot for the past six years, for long.

Alibaba-backed Ant Group is due to list on Chinese and Hong Kong stock exchanges next month, which will boost the tech boss's wealth even further.

The online payments firm could net Mr Ma an estimated $28bn if the company achieves the $250bn valuation it has been targeting.

Politics › UNDP Launches Cash Transfer In Kano by NwaNimo1(op): 10:29pm On Oct 06, 2020
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Kano State Government and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs (FMHDS) has launched an unconditional cash transfer project largely funded by the Government of Japan and the European Union (EU).

The project worth N 2.95 billion ($7,700,000) is implemented under the Nigeria One UN COVID-19 response.

It seeks to alleviate the socio-economic impact of the pandemic on the poor and vulnerable and strengthen the resilience of communities in Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State deeply impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq, Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the European Union (EU) Ambassador H.E Ketil Karlsen, and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Mohamed Yahya witnessed the kick-off in Kano.

Over 9,600 will benefit from the project in Kano, which is one of the five burdened states by COVID-19.

Not less than 2,500 small to medium-sized (SMEs) will also receive cash grants for their businesses and start-ups to support business continuity.

Ganduje said: “We increasingly understand that the COVID-19 pandemic is more than just a health crisis, which will make achieving the SDGs more challenging than ever before.

“Against this backdrop, the Government of Kano is collaborating with all partners, including the UNDP, to focus on key areas – good health systems and the fight against hunger- to ensure our people achieve well-being and economic prosperity.”

Yahya said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has created a multi-sector human development crisis. For the first time since its introduction in 1990, the Human Development Index is projected to decline globally.

“However, it is in this historic context that we must work together to recommit our support towards achieving an inclusive, prosperous, and equitable nation for all people.”

The EU head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS Ambassador, Ketil Karlsen, noted: “The COVID-19 pandemic presents a risk but also an opportunity to make an impactful change and has shown us that investing in human capital is now more important than investing in physical infrastructure.

“We must continue to work together, as history will reflect how we supported the most vulnerable at the height of this crisis.”

Farouq said: “We are excited about this partnership with the UNDP and the Kano State Government which demonstrates to Nigerians, and indeed the global community, our determination in supporting not only initiatives that will bring immediate relief, but also ones that ensure long-term growth and recovery from the effects of this pandemic.”

Orelope-Adefulire noted: “We will continue to reiterate our national commitment to the implementation of the SDGs by ensuring our initiatives and these types of rigorous partnerships with the UNDP, reach every sector of the Nigerian economy – all 774 local governments – so no one is left behind.”

Politics › Zamfara, CBN Enter Into N5bn Gold Deal by NwaNimo1(op): 10:20pm On Oct 06, 2020
Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara says that his administration has entered into a N5 billion gold supply deal with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The governor made the disclosure on Tuesday in Gusau, at a press conference to present the 31-kilogramme Zamfara processed gold.

He said that the state government would, at an agreed time during the year, supply the gold equivalent of the amount.

“Following the global acceptance of the high quality of the gold dug from the state, the apex bank approached us with the deal, which we believe is a good business.

“At the moment, we have commenced our gold reserve with this 31 kilogramme of pure gold and I have presented the sample of the commodity to the president.

“This is the first of time, in the history of our country, that a state will discover its internal potential in gold and channel it in developing the economy of the state,” Matawalle noted. shocked

He said that the state’s gold reserve would be deposited in an undisclosed designated place, which could be utilised in times of need.

“We have to diversify our state economy, especially with the bitter economic experience we went through as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, collapse in oil prices and other economic uncertainties cutting across the globe.

“In gold however, we expect better and higher returns than in other stocks because there is higher multiplier effect in gold and it will enhance the gains of our local miners towards the attainment of the Zamfara of our dream,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor did not state the current market price of gold so as to know how much it would cost the state government to buy the 31 kilogramme.

He, however, referred to google for the price, which he explained, changed on an hourly basis, sometimes. (NAN)

Politics › Nigerians facing ‘grave life-threatening problems’ —Osinbajo by NwaNimo1(op):
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo declared on Tuesday that millions of Nigerians were facing “grave life-threatening problems”. sad

He said the time was ripe for individuals at various arms of government to focus on how to improve the welfare of the citizens.

Osinbajo, who made the declaration at the closing of a two-day executive-legislative leadership retreat held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the elected leaders would be considered irresponsible if they cannot address the nation’s “life-threatening problems.”

The vice-president urged the public officers to collaborate on how they would not fail Nigerians who had given them the opportunity to serve at the high leadership levels.

He said: “Let me say that every generation of leadership must understand context. Law itself must be interpreted and implemented in context.

“What is the reality of the context that we operate in today? We all know, our nation has millions of extremely poor people, the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened employment and poverty.

“We have huge deficits in infrastructure, many children are out of school. If that is our context, we will be callous and irresponsible if we don’t come together, work together to sort out these grave life-threatening problems our people have to confront every day.

“It is time to focus on what we have been elected or appointed to do. shocked This is the welfare of our people. The law and practice as between parliament and executive is a means to an end not an end to itself. The means must not jeopardise the end.”
