The BBC reports that the fire lasted long into the night, destroying parts of the court building. The perpetrators have been identified as hoodlums who took away goods that had been confiscated by the court. Several Nigerians have been protesting in recent days and demanding an end to Police brutality in the country. On Tuesday, reports emerged that the military opened fire on some #EndSARS protestors at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State. There was also some chaos in Lagos mainland, where cars and tires were burned in the Surulere suburb. Meanwhile, Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo, who doubles as ECOWAS Chair, has called for calm in Nigeria in the wake of protests against police brutality in the country. In a series of Twitter posts, he said he has already spoken to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on the processes of reform. Akufo-Addo further expressed his condolence to the victims of clashes, insisting violence is not the answer. “I join all well-meaning persons in calling for calm, and the use of dialogue in resolving the #EndSARS impasse in Nigeria,” he tweeted. “I have spoken with President Buhari, who is committed to this end, and has begun the processes that will lead to reform. “Violence, be it on the part of the Police or protesters, cannot be the solution. To the families who have lost their loved ones, I express my sincere condolences, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” he added. https://www.pulse.com.gh/news/local/lagos-high-court-set-on-fire-amid-endsars-protests/rfyt2vv |

Wizkid demands resignation of Buhari, Osinbajo & IGP over inability to contain #EndSARS protests ‘Joro’ crooner, Ayo Balogun, aka Wizkid, has demanded the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and IGP Mohammed Adamu over their inability to contain the ongoing #EndSars protests. The pop star in a series of tweets posted on his official Twitter handle on Wednesday said that President Buhari has failed as a leader for his inability to handle the situation as the #EndSARS protests continue to spread across Nigeria. Wizkid thus called on Buhari to resign and further described him as an old and incompetent leader who had failed in his duty as the president of the country. He tweeted: “@MBuhari you are a failure! Old and incompetent! Step down! We don’t want you, your Vice President and your IG! Resign! Self acclaimed ‘African Giant’, Burna Boy also earlier demanded the resignation of the President Buhari over the shooting of live bullets at #EndSARS protesters at Lekki toll gate on Tuesday night which reportedly killed many and injured several others. The ‘Ye’ crooner in a post on Twitter on Tuesday noted that this was the most serious time of our lives, and also affirmed that the CCTV at Lekki toll gate was removed by authorities who turned off the lights before shooting at protesters. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/wizkid-demands-resignation-of-buhari-osinbajo-igp-over-inability-to-contain-endsars-protests/ |

The Street of Jibowu in Lagos State has been littered with corpses as security operatives engage youths in the area in the ongoing crisis in Lagos State. The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Sunday, reeled out the necessary requirement for police personnel that would be recruited into the newly established Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. He said in a statement issued by the Force Spokesman, Frank Mba, the training of officers selected for the SWAT which was established last week to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) would commence on Monday. The IGP added that no operative of SARS was selected for the new police tactical team. Adamu said the individuals selected for the SWAT training are young, smart and energetic officers with about seven years working experience and clean service records. He said: “The selected officers shall be subjected to physical fitness test, medical and toxicology screening etc and those found to be unsuitable shall be discharged.” The IGP assured Nigerians that the SWAT team would operate “within very high professional and ethical standards, rule of law and dictates of best international policing practices.” He revealed that the Nigeria Police Force has partnered the International Committee of the Red Cross and other development partners for the training programme slated for the Police Mobile Force Training School, Ila Oragun, Osun State and the PMF Training School, Ende Hills, Nasarawa State. Adamu added: “The ICRC will handle topics touching on humanitarian laws, police conduct in conflict situation, human rights standard especially in the use of force and firearms, arrest and detention amongst others. “Other areas of the training program will include modern-day police ethics and values, intelligence-led policing, operation planning/tactical decision-making processes, hostage rescue tactics and operation, weapon handling, first aid/basic life-saving skills, stress/fear management, police-citizens relations and emotional intelligence etc. “The training modules will be handled by other carefully selected development partners, security experts as well as veterans from the civil society and human rights community.” https://i3.wp.com/www.ripplesnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/New-IGP-Adamu.jpg https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/training-for-swat-personnel-begins-monday/ |
