Politics › Osinbajo Charges Europe To Make COVID-19 Vaccine Available To Africa by NwaNimo1(op): 10:46pm On Sep 05, 2020
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday appealed to Europe to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine was available to Nigeria and other African countries when finally deployed.

He said Nigeria lacked the resources to pre-pay for the vaccine.

Osinbajo, who made the call at the virtual 2020 EURAFRICA Forum, added that the vaccine should not be made available on the basis of the highest bidder but at affordable and accessible manner.

He said: “Although Nigeria does not have the resources or means to pre-pay for a COVID-19 vaccine, we are fortunate to be a GAVI supported country. We urge the EU to lend support to GAVI’s effort to ensure equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines under the COVAX initiative.

“This way, poorer countries, and their citizens will get the vaccines that they need at the same time as the rest of the world.

“Europe should work closely with Africa to ensure that when a vaccine is finally deployed, it should not be on the basis of the highest bidder but rather be made available in an affordable and accessible manner.

“This is a matter that should not be taken for granted. We saw during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, in richer parts of the world, that orders for test kits and reagents by African countries were deemed too small and tended to be ignored.”

Business › CBN Freeze Adebutu Kessington's Bank Accounts For "Tax Fraud" - Sahara Reporters by NwaNimo1(op): 10:21pm On Sep 05, 2020
CBN Freezes Baba Ijebu, Other Companies’ Bank Accounts As Dollar Scarcity Bites Harder In Nigeria

The move by the apex bank comes months after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission launched an investigation into the activities of Adebutu for alleged tax fraud and economic sabotage.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has frozen the bank accounts of 38 Nigerian companies.

This is as scarcity of dollars at the parallel market during the week forced the naira down to N465 against a United States dollar.

Nigeria is presently facing one of its biggest dollar crunch in recent years with the impact hurting critical sectors of the economy.

In a circular dated September 4, Bello Hassan, CBN’s Director of Banking Supervision, asked banks to place the accounts of the 38 companies on Post-No-Debit (PND) order

“You are hereby required to place the under listed accounts on Post-No-Debit with immediate effect and revert with the account names, numbers, currencies and balances of all accounts placed on PND.

“Note that only the listed entities should be placed on PND, all related accounts are excluded. Your response should be forwarded to the underlisted email addresses Osoladipo@cbn.gov.ng or moabeng@cbn.gov.ng,” part of the circular read.

Among the companies listed by CBN is Premier Lotto owned by Adebutu Kessington, Nigerian billionaire known as Baba Ijebu.

The move by the apex bank comes months after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission launched an investigation into the activities of Adebutu for alleged tax fraud and economic sabotage.

According to PREMIUM TIMES, Segun, one of Adebutu's children and other management officials of Premier Lotto were in January detained at the EFCC office in Lagos.

According to officials of the commission, the investigation was as a result of a petition submitted by Western Lotto, another betting company run by late Buruji Kashamu.

PREMIUM TIMES quoted EFCC sources as saying that they had identified N5bn revenue that should have been remitted to the Nigerian Government but was allegedly kept aside by the company.

The probe might be expanded to include other betting companies and investigate claims of sharp practices and how some firms allegedly withhold funds from winning customers.

The Osun State Deputy Governor, Mr. Benedict Alabi on Saturday received four leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and others to All Progressives Congress in the capital of Irewole Local Government Area, Ikire.

The defectors said they took the decision base on their conviction that the Adegboyega Oyetola’s administration is committed to people’s welfare and security, as well as massive infrastructural transformation.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Mr. Olaniyi Ajibola revealed that former PDP women leader in ward 5 of the council area, Mrs. Alimat Akinwemimo, the former P.R.O of the PDP in ward 10, Mr. Ambaliyu Adiza, another chieftain of the party in the area, Mrs. Bola Akinpelu among many others formed the numbers of those that defected.

” I want to commend you for making this courageous decision to follow the right path after distinguishing between inclusive governance and deceit.

“I want to assure you that the Adegboyega Oyetola-led administration will never let you down in any way, we shall continue to make you happy and build a better future for our coming generations”, Alabi stated.

Mr. Benedict Alabi, who received the individuals at his country home in Ikire reiterated the resolve of the administration in the state to transform all strata of the Osun economy and restore the hope of a better future.

Meanwhile, APC youth from various wards across the Local Government had earlier gathered at the venue to express solidarity for Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s administration by endorsing the Governor and his Deputy for another term of 4 years in Office.

The APC Youth wing in the council area, led by Comrade Olagoke Akinwemimo, said the decision was to support the continuity of good governance by the APC-led administration in the state.

Politics › Nigeria’s Revenue Sharing Formula Awkward —Tinubu by NwaNimo1(op): 9:15pm On Sep 05, 2020
The National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, on Saturday called for the review of the nation’s revenue sharing formula.

Tinubu, who made the call while inaugurating the Ondo State Revenue House in Akure, described the present revenue sharing formula in Nigeria as awkward.

He commended the Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, for striving to improve the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The APC chieftain challenged the governors of the six states in the South West to harness the huge potentials in their various states in order to solve the challenges in the region.

Tinubu said: “You can equally use the synergy with the Odua investment to collaborate not only on Amotekun syndrome.

“If everybody is engaged Amotekun will be a pet. If you work with Odua Investment look at the area of collaboration. I know Ondo has a great potential in gas, energy, and tourism to feed this country.

“If the fiscal element of the Nigerian economy is strictly well supervised, we can turn our population into prosperity instead of our liability.”
