...Fake news minister!
PoliticsLai Mohammed: Shortfalls In Budget Allocation Hampering War Against Fake News by NwaNimo1(op): 11:01pm On Nov 01, 2022
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed lamented Tuesday that his ministry is incapacitated in the war against fake news, disinformation and hate speech ravaging Nigeria now.

Lai Mohammed, who made the lamentation during 2023 budget defence session his ministry and relevant agencies had with the Senate Committee on Information, said the recent terror alert raised in Nigeria by the United States of America, United Kingdom and others, gave the nation’s economy devastating blow.

He cried to the committee that his ministry requires adequate funding to fight fake news, disinformation and hate speech, the latest being the terror alert raised in Nigeria by the United States of America, United Kingdom, Germany among others. grin

“If there is any Ministry that should be adequately funded and not suffer from yearly budget cuts it’s the Information Ministry.

“The terror alerts raised by America and some other countries against Nigeria though debunked but not properly done in terms of putting things in proper context in preventing wrong perception from becoming reality.

“The Ministry is even more incapacitated from discharging its basic functions of getting Nigerians informed at all times as regards position of government on burning issues through yearly budgetary cuts.

“Distinguished Senators, I’m extremely sad as far as yearly budgetary cuts are concerned because it is getting worse and worse by the day.

“A worrisome example of this is that while the Information Ministry was given N2.5billion for capital expenditure in 2022, one third of it, which is N869 million, is earmarked for similar purpose in 2023 fiscal year.

“This to us in the Ministry is very depressing because it seems as if is the main agency bearing the burden of cash crunch being faced by government,” he said. shocked

Chairman of the committee, Senator Danladi Sankara told him that yearly budget cuts is not limited to Information Ministry but to all MDAs generally since capital vote component of the federal budget itself dropped from N2.5 trillion to N1trillion.

However, a member of the committee, Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba assured him that budgetary votes would be made available for the Ministry on advocacy for the 2023 general elections.

PoliticsEFCC Raids Black Market Forex Offices As Naira Falls Rapidly by NwaNimo1(op): 2:27pm On Nov 01, 2022
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission raided the offices of black market currency dealers in Abuja on Tuesday in a bid to halt the rapid fall of the naira.

Naira plunged rapidly between Monday and Tuesday to more than 840 in Abuja a week after the the Central Bank of Nigeria said it will replace higher notes to fight counterfeiting, inflation and insecurity.

President Muhammadu Buhari has backed the move, saying it will help fight corruption. His finance minister criticised the policy.

Hopes the policy could help fight money laundering appears to have backfired as suspected holders of illicit cash scramble to change their stash into foreign currencies, fueling demand for dollars and a further plunge in the value of naira. grin

The currency crossed the 800 mark for the first time weekend and the decline has shown no sign of abating. On Tuesday, traders told PREMIUM TIMES they were buying a dollar for as high as 840, implying they would sell more.

A PREMIUM TIMES reporter at the Wuse Zone 4 area of Abuja where currency traders conduct their unauthorised deals, said armed operatives of the EFCC stormed the Sheraton Hotel area of Abuja, arresting Bureaux De Change (BDC) operators.

Our reporter saw two white buses parked in front of the Musawa House along Constantine Street of Wuse Zone 4.

The anti-graft operatives were seen dragging a BDC operator into one of the waiting vehicles, while people surged towards the officials.

Other EFCC officials stood at an intersection between Sheraton Hotel and Constantine Street adjacent Abacha Estate in the Wuse area as vehiclar traffic grew.

BDC operators who did not want to be named for fear of arrest, said the dollar sold at N860 as of 1p.m on Tuesday.

“For now, there is no dollar to sell. This morning (Tuesday), a dollar was selling for N850, while I bought a dollar at N840,” the operator said.

“As of 1.53p.m, the USD was selling between N870 and N900 depending on sellers and buyers bargaining power,” another BDC operator told PREMIUM TIMES. shocked

PoliticsKano APC Meeting Turns Bloody As Rep. Doguwa Attacks Murtala Garo by NwaNimo1(op): 11:22pm On Oct 31, 2022
A high-level meeting of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kano on Monday turned bloody as the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa attacked the deputy governorship candidate of the party, Murtala Garo.

The meeting, held at the residence of the Deputy Governor Nasir Gawuna, was organised to review the successes and failures recorded during the the visit of the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the incident occured when Mr Doguwa, who was not invited to the meeting, went to see the chairman of the party, Abdullahi Abbas.

An insider told DAILY NIGERIAN that upon arrival at the venue, Mr Doguwa began complaining that he was sidelined by the party leaders on matters pertaining to funds, but only invited to execute difficult party assignments.
grin

“Alhassan Doguwa first engaged the deputy governor in a verbal attack before turning to Murtala Garo. He complained that Murtala ordered his boys to cover his picture on the party’s banners during Tinubu’s visit, while in reality Murtala had no hand in that,” a source said.

“At that moment, Murtala attempted to call him to order, rebuked him for his unruly behaviour and reminded him about how he abused his (Murtala’s) parents the previous night during a meeting in his (Doguwa’s) residence at Kwankwasiyya City.”

Infuriated by Mr Garo’s challenge, DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that Mr Doguwa grabbed the deputy governor’s tea cup and threw it at Mr Garo.

Our reporter gathered that in an attempt to deflect the attack with his hand, the shards of broken glass cup hit Mr Garo on his hand and injured him.

However, the meeting ended after the incident, with the deputy governor warning Mr Doguwa to stay clear of his house.

Prior to the Monday incident, DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that Mr Doguwa had allegedly poured invective on the state commissioner for Information, Mohammed Garba, for not putting his name on the schedule of speakers during Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s recent book launch in Abuja.

Another insider added during Mr Tinubu’s visit to Kano, Mr Doguwa had also threw a folded babbarriga gown on the face of the chairman of the APC caucus in the House of Reps, Ali Wudil, for not having his (Doguwa’s) portrait on the gown. grin

Efforts to speak to Mr Doguwa were unsuccessful as his known mobile numbers were switched off at the time of filing this report.

Mr Garo did not also respond to our reporter’s call.
