In the Absence of Balewa who was the prime Minister, the Parliament chose the next senior minister from the ruling party, Diparchima from Borno to take over. He was supposed to be sworn in by the president but Zik who knew about the coup was hibernating in Brazil. The senate president Mr Nwafor, who was acting president refused to swear in Diparchima but swore in Ironsi his igbo brother who had forced the parliament to hand over power to him.
