Politics / No Time Limit For Returning Chibok Girls Alive – Nigerian Presidency by OAM(m): 10:20pm On Dec 15, 2014
The Nigerian presidency has dismissed concerns over the prolonged abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok, Borno State, saying the government has no time limit to return the long-suffering teenagers alive to their families. The message, delivered Monday by a presidential spokesperson, appeared to imply that the government is taking its time to rescue the girls who have been in Boko Haram captivity for nearly nine months. The girls were kidnapped on April 14 by the extremist group, which has recently seized territories in Nigeria and is pushing for the creation of an Islamic State.

The Nigerian government has in the past ruled out the use of force for the rescue of the girls.
Attempts at negotiations have also failed, the biggest being a ceasefire the government said it agreed with Boko Haram in October, which turned out false. Speaking on Channels TV programme, Sunrise Daily, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, said the government had no time limit on when the girls should be expected home alive.
“There is no time limit for returning the girls alive,” Mr. Okupe said. “The issue of the Chibok girls is a national tragedy that must be borne with fortitude. Government has not given up on finding and rescuing the girls.

Mr. Okupe said the Chibok girls’ case remains a “major thorn in the flesh of this administration”, and assured that the government would have done anything possible to have them released if that were possible “yesterday”.
Mr. Okupe said the issue demanded extreme caution to avoid losing the girls. Describing the girls’ kidnap as not the regular incident involving the seizure of one or two persons, the presidential spokesperson said the rescue of over 200 girls must be handled with utmost care. “Any mistake will lead to their death. That is why we (the government) are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea,” he said. He cited President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to Chad’s President Idriss Deby, as an indication of the extent the government would be prepared to go to have the girls back. On the security situation in the North East, particularly in states where emergency was declared, Mr. Okupe said the military was now in “total and perfect control”, as the insurgents have since been driven out from all territories, including Mubi, Baga, and Gwoza, they were said to have occupied.

According to him, the military has not only re-organised itself, it has overhauled its operational and administrative capacity with increased funding and equipment. He said the insurgency in Nigeria has since taken a multi-national colouration, which was beyond the country, with the extremists group having contacts with networks in the Islamic Maghreb, Al Qaeda and ISIS that are ideologically highly motivated than the soldiers. “Ideological insurgency is an extremely difficult situation to cope with. That is why I say we are in a state of war. Soldiers are not trained to kill themselves like the insurgent. They are trained to use their weapons to stave off the attack of the enemy,” he said. “Even if the government were to line up the over 200,000 military men Nigeria has along the over 1,500 kilometres distance of the North East border, Mr. Okupe said it would not be adequate to secure the area, as they would still be about 10 metres apart from each other.”
Politics / Tompolo’s Battleships May Be Turned Against Itsekiri – Group by OAM(m): 12:01pm On Dec 15, 2014
The acquisition of seven decommissioned Norwegian battleships by a company believed to be owned by an ex-militant, Government Ekpemupolo, is threatening to fan the embers of ethnic hostility in the Niger Delta, as a pan-Itsekiri organisation, the Warri Study Group, WSG, has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to revoke the security contract granted Mr. Ekpemupolo’s company and place him under watch.
In a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Edward Ekpoko, and Secretary, Tony Ede, the WSG warned that if Mr. Ekpemupolo, popularly called Tompolo, turned the weapon against the Itsekiri or other ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta, the international community should hold Mr. Jonathan accountable for failing to act.

On Saturday, PREMIUM TIMES reported that Mr. Ekpemupolo’s security company, Global West Vessel Service, which was awarded a multi-billion-naira contract by the Federal government to secure pipelines in the Niger Delta, procured seven decommissioned Hulk class battleships from Norway. According to the report, the battleships with capability to carry missiles have been re-armed.
The procurement appears to violate Nigeria’s law. Part II Section 17 of the Private Guard Companies Act forbids private security companies from procuring or carrying deadly weapons. “No person approved under the provisions of this act shall bear or possess any firearm or ammunition in the course of his duties,” the act stipulates. WSG says it fears that Mr Ekpemupolo, who is from the Ijaw ethnic group, as Mr. Jonathan, may use the weapon against the Istekiris who have a long history of ethnic rivalry with the Ijaws. “President Jonathan, Tompolo and the DG of NIMASA are all of Ijaw extraction and we therefore see a script being acted out. Nigeria is the only country in the world where individuals – a rehabilitated militant for that matter – is awarded a contract to oversee the security of the coastline of a nation and with powers to import warships and sophisticated arms,” it said in the statement. The group said it observed that since Mr Ekpemupolo’s company was awarded the contract to protect pipelines in the region, oil theft and bunkering have been on the increase. It, therefore, suggested that the battleships may be meant for intimidating other ethnic nationalities in the region rather than for what it was ostensibly procured for.
Politics / I Didn’t Know About Stella’s Tummy Tuck That Turned Tragic – Obasanjo by OAM(m): 11:52am On Dec 15, 2014
A former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he had no knowledge of his late wife, Stella’s plan to undergo the cosmetic procedure that led to her death. Mr. Obasanjo disclosed this in his autobiography, My Watch, which was released on December 8.
The late first lady died on October 23, 2005, following a botched tummy tuck – elective liposuction – procedure in Spain. The surgery was scheduled towards the commemoration of her 60th birthday. “After the internment, I decided to look into the circumstances of her death,” Mr. Obasanjo wrote on page 240 of Volume two of the book. “I found that part of her 60th birthday anniversary, which was unknown to me, was her operation for her tummy and her shape.”

Mr. Obasanjo also addressed the insinuations that his wife’s death may have been a “sacrifice” he carried out for success in his job.
“Before the verdict in Spain, I was unaware of what I came to hear later that I might have caused the death of my wife to sacrifice her for success in my job,” he wrote. “That is how wicked and satanic some Nigerians can be in their rumours and mischief.”
He referred to the doctor who carried out the surgery as “careless” and narrated how with the help of the Nigerian Embassy in Spain and the Spanish authorities, he got justice for his wife’s death. “I instructed that the doctor and the clinic be prosecuted,” he said. “The lost life cannot be brought back but the successful prosecution would prevent carelessness and loss of life in the future.”
The doctor, according to the former president, was made to pay damages, which was collected by Olu Obasanjo, Stella’s son, and his licence withdrawn for a period of time.

Mr. Obasanjo was however full of praises for his wife, whom he married in 1976, four years after the formal dissolution of his first marriage. He commended her for handling the confrontations she had with his first wife, Remi, with maturity, for accepting children he had with other women as her own, and for campaigning for his release while he was in jail as well as supporting him during his presidency. Mr. Obasanjo said shortly before her death, Stella, who was Roman Catholic, ensured that her marriage was blessed by the church in a small private ceremony at the Aso Villa conducted by Mathew Kukah, now the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese.
According to Mr. Obasanjo, after the ceremony, his late wife thanked him and said, “You have relieved me

Chrismas Is Coming!

I remember when I was very young, in the time like this, our major concern is what we are going to wear for the oncoming Christmas and New Year. Myself and my other siblings would be troubling our mum for this annual mindboggling issue.
Once these items are bought, we go to where the clothings and shoes are kept from time to time until the day we are going to put them on. When the D day finally comes, we will be the first children in the neighborhood to wake up. We rush to the bathroom, take our bath and wait on our mum's neck to handover to us the uniform for the long-awaited day.

Why do you guzs get more comments and views on threads most times compared to us? Ok, how about making FP more often?

Are you people saying romance related issues are more important to pressing National issues like "Bokoharam, Corruption etc"? Remember, you can only have a good relationship in a country that is free of violent and corruption. Imagine a Nig with constant power, good transportation system, jobs for the youth and the safety of her people....

With all of the above present, you get to provide more for your woman, ladies get to watch Telemundo without power failure "lol", the guzs without cars have better alternative with the present of modern railway.

You guzs should visit Politics section more often and contribute. We know we are intimidating and all but, we welcome you all; after all, we have big men and women that are single there "lol"
Politics / Why Is The Romance Section Dominating Our Own Politics Section? by OAM(m): 7:43pm On Dec 13, 2014
Am not active on the romance section but, I visit the section when I wana laugh loud. And in course of my here and there visit to the Romance section I realised how busy it is compared to our own dear Politics section.

The Romance sections gets the most comments and views on threads most of the times compared to the politics section and it makes FP the more.

Are we all married here?

Are we less romantic here?

Wait... Wait....

Pls tell me we are the leaders of the Virtual Nig on Nairaland?

Pls tell me we have stronger personalities compared to the ever busy Romance section?

As far am concerned, we on the Politics section rock the most, and I have a feeling we more romantic to the Romance section peeps.

What do you guzs think?

Am taking this thread to Romance section to have a balance view...LOL
Business / Facebook Dumps Microsoft by OAM(m): 10:39am On Dec 13, 2014
Back in 2007, Microsoft invested $240 million in Facebook for a 1.6 percent stake. It valued Facebook at $15 billion, and everybody laughed.

Now, Facebook is worth over $200 billion, and that little investment turns out to be the best-performing equity investment Steve Ballmer ever made as CEO of Microsoft.

Microsoft sold some of its Facebook stock after the IPO in 2012, but seemingly still holds some — Microsoft's last annual filing with the SEC, in June 2014, notes only a "partial" sale of its Facebook stake. But while that stake may be worth a lot of money, it doesn't seem to be getting Microsoft much respect these days.

Today, Facebook confirmed that it's no longer including search results from Bing on its site. The Bing deal began around the time Microsoft bought its Facebook stake, and was renewed in 2010.

The move will hurt Bing's search market share, which was already ailing after a recent redesign of Microsoft's consumer web site, MSN. Meanwhile, search is becoming more important to Facebook. Earlier this week, Facebook introduced a new search feature that will let users search through individual posts, not just pages. That doesn't exactly put Facebook into direct competition with Google for web search, but it does mean that Facebook becomes a lot more useful as a place to find information that your contacts have posted.

The companies have been moving apart for a couple of years now. Their original deal called for Microsoft to be the exclusive third-party ad partner. But Microsoft's ad platform business never really took off, and Microsoft wrote down almost the entire $6.3 billion purchase price of aQuantive, the company it bought in 2007 to try and make a play in online advertising.

A few months after the write-down, in 2013, Facebook bought the old aQuantive ad platform, Atlas, from Microsoft.

Facebook couldn't even be bothered to develop a version of its app for Microsoft's Windows Phone platform; that task was left to Microsoft itself. Microsoft told us, "Facebook recently changed its search experience to focus on helping people tap into information that’s been shared with them on Facebook vs. a broader set of Web results. We continue to partner with Facebook in many different areas." The latest split may hurt Microsoft's Bing market share, but the company seems a lot less interested in making money with online advertising since Satya Nadella took over. There hasn't been any official announcement to that effect, but a few months ago, Microsoft fired most of its global advertising salesforce.

Dominating online advertising was a Microsoft dream from the last decade. The new Microsoft is focused elsewhere.
Politics / Christians To Sly Gej Come 2015 by OAM(m): 9:39am On Dec 13, 2014
When we understand as Christians with our hearts who we are and what we are suppose to be, we will not be scared of 2015 election. Like I said, we flock in the church, but our hearts are not broken, the church is not humble inwardly. When our hearts are broken, things would be force to work in our favour.

Christians which voted massively for the president in 2011, have voiced out their resentment against the Jonathan administration for perceived weakness and his inability to protect lives and properties, and have resolved to vote him out come 2015. Only a corrupt religious leader looking for flight landing permit that would encourage and support Gej for another tenure.

Politics / How Do You Want To Celebrate The General's Victory? by OAM(m): 6:30pm On Dec 11, 2014
Firstly, I want to congratulate the APC's, Delegates and the General himself. Today's victory is not about who won or who lost, its about Nigeria as a country, its about you and I, and the will of the organising committee for a work well done.

Today's result gives us hope to realising that everything is possible. The headline for today suites all NL's sections; from Romance section to Health, Business etc. The General's victory gives hope to that guy trying to woo that ideal lady he so much wants to be with, I encourage you to go all out for her regardless of your financial standing; how about that person suffering from health challenges? I say to you that you can overcome it, all you need do is believe and take your medication as prescribed by the doctor. And that young mind with that brilliant idea? I encourage you to bring the idea to life, work on it, pitch it to people just as the General himself did.

The Buhari story is indeed a special gift of the season to many, its beyond politics, its a game changer for all of us, and I have no regret taking a day off from my busy work schedules to be part of it. Hence, the need for us to draw closer to our dreams and aspiration is now, don't let people tell you that you too old to get your first degree, the fact you old means you can come out with a first class, and how about those with a degree? Masters awaits you.

The General's victory is for the literate and illiterate, its also for Christians and Muslims. The time has come for us to make that big decision(s) with our lives, the way we want to live and how we want to end it. And if you look at it closely, you realise how important it is for us as a people and a Nation to keep believing in all that we do.

I have decided to use today's victory to encourage a close friend and a colleague #GalaxyBackbone who currently sick, and am certain of her quick recovery. I urge you to celebrate today's victory in an unusual way.

Finally, I appreciate NL and its Mods, the follow up on all threads, quality control and the FP Rush hour"lol" you all are great.....
