[b]TALKING POINTS: FENERBAHCE V UNITED Manchester United return to action on Thursday with an overseas trip to face Fenerbahçe in the Europa League. Here are six talking points to dissect and discuss ahead of the match in Turkey… 1: A MASSIVE INCENTIVE United are second in Group A and a victory at Sukru Saracoglu would create a five-point gap over third-placed Fenerbahçe, leaving the Reds needing just a draw from the two remaining matches against Feyenoord and Zorya Luhansk to secure qualification. Jose Mourinho will be determined to progress as early as possible, too, with important Premier League matches against Arsenal, West Ham, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur sandwiched around those couple of outstanding group games. 2: NO ROOM FOR PROFLIGACY It was well-documented that United registered 37 goal attempts during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Burnley at Old Trafford, which was the highest total since Opta's records began in the 2003/04 season. Assistant manager Rui Faria believes the goals will come and the onus is now on the players to start converting chances again, beginning with this Europa League tie. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the club's top scorer this season with six, but the Swede has not hit the back of the net since the 1-0 win over Zorya on 29 September. He will be determined to end that drought in Istanbul if selected by the boss. 3: BASTIAN WILL NOT RETURN Bastian Schweinsteiger was pictured training with the first team on Monday morning, but he will definitely not feature in the match against Fenerbahçe due to his omission from the club’s Europa League squad that was submitted earlier this season. The manager may discuss the German midfielder during his pre-match press conference, which you can follow in ManUtd.com's live blog from 16:00 GMT on Wednesday. 4: ROBIN AND FENERBAHCE IN FORM Although United dismantled Fenerbahce with relative ease at home, registering a comfortable 4-1 win beneath the Old Trafford floodlights, Thursday’s match should be a more difficult task. The Turkish club have been boosted by consecutive league wins over Konyaspor and Karabukspor since we last met, with Robin van Persie scoring twice as the latter opponents were beaten 5-0 at the weekend. The ex-Reds striker notched in the second half of the first meeting and will hope to show his quality again in this return fixture. 5: EXPECT A HOSTILE ATMOSPHERE Matches in Turkey are historically fiery occasions amid the unique passion of the local supporters and United are braced for a testing night in Istanbul. Luke Shaw has not played there before but the young left-back has an idea of what to expect. “We know it will be hard,” he told ManUtd.com this week. “We beat them 4-1 so they will look for revenge, especially in front of a hostile crowd. We need to focus on what we need to do and, if we can do that, I am sure we will get maximum points.” [/b] |
"I had a couple [of idols]. Wayne Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo. They were always exciting to watch as a kid. "You always wanted to watch the exciting players and he [Ronaldo] was scoring a lot of goals at the time." - Marcus Rashford |
"My plan is to get more experience here, to get into that rhythm of playing every week at a high level, then go back stronger to United, with a better football knowledge. "I came to Spain to play and get more time on the pitch. With each game I feel that I'm getting better and better. "I think I have a good future at United and the people at the club give me confidence that that is the case too. "Mourinho sent me a message a couple of weeks ago asking how everything was going. You appreciate that when you're away on loan." - Andre Perreira |
"I really look forward to games like this [Fenerbahce] because they're an experience – it's completely different to what you get over here. "From what I’ve heard, it's a difficult place to play. As players we need to embrace that, but also be professional and make sure we're fully concentrated on the game in order to get the three points. "It’s important to savour the atmosphere as who knows when you will get that experience again." - Marcus Rashford |
[b]"They are not actually winning the games that you would expect them to win. "I think if they won the league from this position it would be a miraculous recovery. But I think going forward now, there are a lot more questions in terms of Mourinho himself as a manager and his effect, and how long it is taking to get across to the United players. "And I actually admire Jose Mourinho when he first came in, because we are talking about a team that finished outside the top four last year. He was not talking about top four, he was saying: 'No, we are Manchester United, we are going for the league'. "And rightly so and the players he bought were players to win the league. You do not buy [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic to think: 'I am building something for two or three years.' You are buying him for right now. "Even though Pogba, he is not young, he is only 23 and has his best years ahead, but it is a world-record fee, so you are buying him for right now. "Same for [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan - I do not know what has gone on there. [Eric] Bailly I think has done really well at centre back, but unfortunately he has gone out. "So I think he called it on himself, and rightly so, it is Manchester United and I think they spent more money than anybody else in the summer. "The thing about Manchester United and specifically Jose Mourinho is, he normally always makes an impact when he first comes in and the questions have always been in year three - does that effect wear off? "So if we are talking about actually building something, and maybe taking a little bit longer, more transfer windows and more changes, will the Mourinho effect still fall away in that third season? "So you are thinking next season the pressure is massive to go on and if they want to maybe win the league. I think for Manchester United now and Jose Mourinho, they will be looking at top four and trying to get in that." - Jamie Carragher[/b] |
chrisley024: ![]() Nah! I think He's simply given a chance to prove his worth! If he can adapt to Jose's Tactics and Game-plan, hopefully he wouldn't be sold, but if he fails to utilize the opportunity - then he's gonna join the Pensioners in the US League. |

“I do feel an important part of this team. Since I came to Manchester United, we had ups and downs but I always felt an important player under any manager, and I feel important now. But we didn’t have any conversations. “It is difficult to control everything that goes out and your friends and family are ringing to know what is going on but I always told them the same thing – ‘Listen, I am the one that knows what is going on, and I know that nothing is going on. “When the manager came in, I was always thinking the same as I always have – I am going to give my best, I believe in myself and I think this can work out. “It is a professional relationship [I have with Mourinho]. That is it. That is why, when so many things were said about was going to happen when the new manager arrive, in my mind I had it clear.” - Juan Mata |
"It's the first time he's [Ibrahimovic] found himself in this situation in his career. He usually puts them in the back of the net because this doesn't happen to him often. "He's going to have to deal with it. I know he has the character and the ability to deal with it but it will be better for him if it happens sooner rather than later. "Sometimes it's okay if you don't score but your team still wins but he knows he's had great opportunities to score goals in important games. "It does affect you but I would still back him to deliver for United because of the player he was and he is still. "It hasn't happened for him recently for United, but he needs to find a way to score goals because they need that. "Does it affect him? Yes, he's a human being but he has the right tools in his mind to recover from that." - Thierry Henry |
[b]"Obviously we would like to be in a different position in the table, higher up, but I think especially in the last games, not against Chelsea, but before that and the games against City and Burnley, we showed the football we can play. "Against Burnley, it was a very weird game in the way we had more chances than ever to score but we didn’t. We need to keep going though, we have a great squad with a lot of quality to show we can play good football and win games and that’s our aim. We know we need to start winning soon and we have to find consistency because we are not in the position we’d like to be in. "I think we have brought very good players in and I think the squad is very strong and obviously we know that at the beginning of the season the results are not the best that we could get and especially some games have been a little bit cruel for us. "We know we can do better in some ways and that we need to get points. Football is about winning and also about how you win, the confidence you feel on the pitch and the football you play, but obviously you need to get results. "It’s difficult to start a new era after the time Sir Alex was here but I would tell people that this club sooner or later will be fighting for trophies again and hopefully this season. "We are bringing players every year trying to get that and, sooner or later, we are going to get that because, as I said before, we have a great squad and also an unbelievable support behind us. That’s one of the things that makes this club very special, the support we have even in the bad moments. "I think we’re all very happy for him (Schweinsteiger) that he’s training with us, I didn’t train with him because we were in separate groups but obviously I wish the best for him and hopefully the best for the team as well." "The group is very tight and it will be very important for us to win there and to get very close to qualification [for the next stages] but we know as well that they’re going to be very difficult. When you play in Turkey it’s a very difficult atmosphere and we have to face it." - Juan Mata [/b] |
"Zlatan looks like he's suffering from a lack of confidence. He doesn't look as if he's very confident when he's in on goal. There was a fantastic give-and-go that he did with Paul Pogba (against Burnley) and I thought if he'd just rip through the ball then he must score. "But he didn't. He tried to side-foot it and it went for a corner-kick. At the start of the season he was smashing those in. "He scored 52 in 50 games last year. He's a phenomenal centre-forward and I was delighted when United bought him. "But the Premier League is not an easy division. We have seen the coaches saying it - even Pep Guardiola - that every game is different. - Ray Wilkins |
"It's always nice to have him (Mourinho) there on the sideline because he likes to give information out to us, especially the full-backs, "We get to do what he wants during the whole week. He's working with us for the whole week, so there's no worries if he's not on the sidelines. We've got Rui (Faria, assistant manager) and he's a good character as well. "I don't know what happened with the way he got sent to the stands because I was only focused on the game. "He gives information and encouragement and that's good because I can pass that on the other players, being a full-back. "I can take criticism, the manager only wants to make me play better and I want to prove to him that he can trust me. "I've felt fitter and stronger, in the last game especially, and I just want to keep improving and keep helping the team as much as possible. "There was no disagreement from me on what was said by the manager in our talks and he knows what he's talking about. "I need to take that on board and do what he wants me to do." - Luke Shaw |
"The back four is very strong, best goalkeeper in the country. I think you play Carrick, Herrera to the right, Pogba off the left, Rashford off the left and Mkhitaryan off the right. "It’s a team, I genuinely believe, is as good a team [as any] in the Premier League." - Owen Hargreaves |

"If one player can overcome this moment it is him (Ibrahimovic) because his attitude, character and the way he works is fantastic. "I’ve got no doubt he’s going to score a lot of goals for us but it’s not only him – we’ve missed a lot of chances. "He did a lot of good things for the team. A lot of the chances we created were because of him. We have one of the best strikers in the world." - Ander Herrera |

Hi everyone, I’m writing to you at the end of a typical autumn Sunday in Manchester, with the night arriving earlier after the clocks have gone back by an hour. The winter season is approaching... The day has been quiet and I’ve been thinking a lot about Saturday’s game, arguably one of the weirdest draws of my career. If you watched our game against Burnley, you will agree with me that it’s very difficult to create so many chances to win and yet get only one point. I guess Heaton, their goalkeeper, will remember this evening of October for all his life, and you can do nothing but congratulate him. He saved absolutely everything. The team showed a good attitude from the kick-off. We started very focused and kept fighting for the goal until the final whistle, despite the fact we had to play with ten men for quite a while. We had countless shots on target, but between the woodwork, the defenders and, especially, the goalkeeper’s outstanding performance, the goal never came. I know it sounds repetitive but this sport is like that. There are games when the score is cruel and it doesn’t reflect how well you did. Sometimes you don’t deserve to win but you end up with three points, and sometimes is the opposite. I honestly think that our performance on Saturday reinforces the idea of a team that we want to show in the long term, more than if it had been a lucky win after a bad game. If we had taken a couple of the chances that we had, now we would be talking about one of our best games of the season, so we shouldn’t see this from an extremely negative perspective when we did so many things well. However, we are aware that we must get better in that area. As always, thank you for showing your support after the game, it means that you perceived the effort made by the team. Have a nice week. Hugs, Juan. Cc AdisaOwala, Eph12..... the red part is for you Guys! ![]() |
