Mighty Jets FC, a second-tier side in the Nigeria National League, have sacked 40 players out of their 65-man squad for underperforming. The Jos-based football club which seats currently on the seventh position in the 13-team Northern Conference of the Nigeria National League (NNL) have also signed 10 new players in other to cement their promotion to the upper league. Confirming their dismissal, Jets' Sporting Director and former Super Eagles striker, Benedict Akwuegbu told BBC Sport that the football club has "separated wheat from the chaff." "We had a big squad of 65 players, too crowded and unproductive, so we had to release 40 players. "We only need 35 players for the season and some players were not even registered but training with the club. It was just too much. "What we've done is retain the ones who have something to offer and bring in ten new players as well. It's like separating wheat from the chaff. "The atmosphere has changed now and we now have a squad capable of fighting in our tough quest for promotion." One of the players affected told BBC Sport that he was not given enough opportunity to prove himself. "I understand that the team was struggling but I didn't really get a chance," said the defender, who requested anonymity. Another player, also speaking on condition he is not named, said, "I believe the club made their own decisions, but I will hopefully come back and play against Jets someday and prove they were wrong to let me go." Akwuegbu also revealed that the club will still release some players at the end of the season. "Right now our chances of promotion is very slim this season but we are still going to release some players," he said. "There's no sentiment and you only need the best players to achieve your goals and not a big squad." Mighty Jets won the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) league title in 1972.

China on Wednesday launched a new type of domestically built warship in its latest bid to modernise its military, state media said. The launch comes after China presented its first home-produced aircraft carrier in April. Amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea , Beijing is taking an increasingly assertive stance in the waters it claims. China's new 10,000-tonne destroyer will undergo extensive testing. The warship "is equipped with new air defence, anti-missile, anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons," China's official news agency Xinhua said. According to the state-run Global Times, the vessel type is thought to be the first type 055 destroyer - a successor to the smaller type 052D destroyers. Defending its "sovereignty" Beijing has reasserted its "indisputable sovereignty" over parts of the South China Sea after the Trump administration vowed to prevent China from taking territory in the region. The US has repeatedly sent military ships and planes near disputed islands, calling them "freedom of navigation" operations to ensure access to key shipping and air routes. Both sides have accused each other of "militarising" the South China Sea. Why is the South China Sea contentious? Growing concern over China's naval might Rival countries have wrangled over territory in the vital waterway for centuries, but tension has steadily increased in recent years. China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims. China has backed its own claims with expansive island-building and naval patrols. The new destroyer is seen as another landmark after April's launch of the domestically built aircraft carrier. It is the country's second aircraft carrier, after an older, Soviet-built carrier bought from Ukraine. More military spending As its economy expands, China has been modernising its armed forces. In March, it announced it would increase its military budget by about 7% this year - the second year in a row that increases have been less than 10%, after nearly 20 years of larger increases. Beijing's defence budget still remains smaller than that of the US though. While China plans to spend about 1.3% of its projected economic output in 2017 on defence, the US spends roughly 3% on the military. Given that the US economy is larger, the dollar value difference is enormous. US President Donald Trump has also proposed a 10% increase in the military budget.

A Roman Catholic priest abducted by Islamist militants who seized parts of a southern Philippine city has been seen alive, the military said Monday, as troops pressed on with their offensive. Air and artillery bombardment of enclaves occupied by the militants in the largely Muslim city of Marawi resumed after an eight-hour truce Sunday to allow residents to celebrate the end of the Ramadan fasting month. Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera said the militants were deliberately burning houses and using improvised bombs, booby traps and hostages as human shields to delay the troops' advance, five weeks into the fighting. Hundreds of gunmen flying the black flag of the Islamic State (IS) group occupied parts of Marawi on May 23, triggering bloody fighting that has claimed nearly 400 lives according to an official count. Father Teresito "Chito" Suganob, a Catholic priest assigned to Marawi, was taken hostage along with some parishioners early in the siege. Herrera, spokesman for the military forces in Marawi, said the priest had been seen alive on Sunday in a part of the city still in the hands of the extremists. "We don't have details of his health. We were just told that he was sighted alive," he told reporters, citing accounts from civilians rescued from the battle zone. He also said there were about 100 civilian hostages still in the hands of the gunmen, being used as "human shields", ammunition carriers and stretcher-bearers. Fighting resumed with renewed fury on Monday, with government fighter jets and other aircraft seen carrying out bombing attacks. "Our offensive operations have resumed and will continue so we can liberate Marawi at the soonest time possible," Herrera said at a news conference in Marawi. He said the bodies of two militants believed to be from the Middle East because of their physical features were found at the scene of an earlier airstrike, another sign that foreign fighters had joined the battle. "These foreign terrorists involved in the hostilities are bomb experts. They are the ones facilitating the rigging of the buildings and houses with bombs," Herrera said. Eight foreign fighters, including those from Chechnya, Indonesia and Malaysia, were killed in the early days of the battle, the government has said. Herrera said they were still trying to confirm reports that Isnilon Hapilon, a veteran Filipino militant said to be the leader of the Islamic State group in Southeast Asia, had escaped Marawi despite a military and police cordon. An attempt by troops to arrest Hapilon in Marawi on May 23 triggered the rampage by the militants. Hapilon was indicted in Washington for his involvement in the 2001 kidnapping of three Americans in the Philippines. He has a $5 million bounty on his head from the US government and is on its "most wanted" terror list. |

It has long been described as a sign of madness, before scientists found that it was far from it. Talking to yourself or self-talk is an action that not only helps you materialize your thoughts, but also helps you make better sense of things. Today, we share 5 reasons why talking to yourself is anything but crazy. It Speeds Up Your Brain Talking to yourself can actually help you complete tasks faster and helps improve your accuracy and performance. Repeating to yourself what you need to find or accomplish helps spark your memory and speeds up the rate at which your brain works in helping to accomplish the task. Talking to yourself also helps improve your self-control, reduces impulsive behavior and even helps improve your decision making. It Helps You Organize Your Thoughts When you’re confused or when it seems like your thoughts are running rampant through your mind, talking to yourself help you organize these wild and confusing thoughts. Conversing with yourself, especially when there’s no one around to really talk to, help you get a grip and clarify your thoughts enough to tend to what’s important and make decisions on whatever you’re contemplating. It Helps To Improve Focus and Behaviour Talking yourself through tasks helps improve your focus and helps you to better adjust your behavior to suit the work at hand. Verbally announcing each step of a task to yourself can actually help you perform much better at it because of improved focus, and it also makes it easier for you to set goals for yourself. So, next time you need to carry out a tasking, tricky or confusing project, try giving yourself verbal directions (in other words, try talking yourself through it). You’ll notice that your spoken statements actually help you determine what your next move should be, and what behavior you will need to complete the project. It Helps You Feel Less Anxious Giving yourself a quick talk out loud when you need to calm your nerves helps relax you, makes you less anxious and actually increases your chances of performing better. Talking or conversing with yourself before a stressful event can help you relax. Using second person phrases or pronouns during your ‘self-talk’ does a lot in helping you build confidence; this is because talking to yourself with second person pronouns helps create a psychological distance from the event, which allows you manage your nervous and anxious emotions much better. It Can Improve Your Success Rate Encouraging yourself out loud increases your chances of succeeding. Speaking positive and encouraging words to yourself especially when working to complete a task or achieve a goal, increases your chances of overall success in the task. Of course, this does not take the place of actual knowledge, hard work and effort, but it does make your odds of success a tad better. In addition, encouraging yourself is not enough; you have to take note of the pronouns you use to encourage yourself. Studies show that encouraging yourself with second person pronouns actually has greater benefit than first-person pronouns. Second person pronouns reminds you of not only of yourselves but of those who believed or believe in you, and this in turn gives you an ego boost as well motivates you and grows your confidence to keep pushing |
