Education / After PUNCH Report, ASUU Gives Armless Gombe Girl N1.6m Scholarship by Oblivion34: 1:16am On Jun 17, 2023
Following the report of The PUNCH Newspaper, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has given a N1.6 million scholarship to Maryam Umar.

Also, the union provided Umar with a laptop, a specialised table and chair, a voice recorder and an additional N130,000 per semester to offset feeding, transport and other academic expenses.

Umar was born armless, but her story became prominent after our correspondent featured her in an article pleading for help with her registration fees after she secured admission into Gombe State University.

President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, lauded PUNCH for bringing the plight of the indigent person with disability to the limelight, noting that after an investigation into Umar’s background, the union settled to assist her.

The Zonal Coordinator, Bauchi Zone, Professor Lawal Abubakar, who was in the company of chairpersons in the zone, while representing the ASUU president, said, “ASUU National got the information and directed the Chairperson ASUU GSU to investigate and confirm the information.

“This was after the news was sighted in The PUNCH; information was instantly verified to be true and the ASUU National promised to make Maryam Umar its daughter and shoulder all the responsibilities of her studies.

“ASUU National Scholarship covers her feeding, transport and academic allowance, including her yearly registration fees for the period of her studies. We granted a scholarship to her to the tune of N1,680,000, covering the four years period of her studies.”

Also speaking, Chairperson of the GSU branch, Dr Suleiman Jauro, urged PWDs not to give up on themselves, adding that they should draw inspiration from Umar, who refused to give up.

“I want to encourage people with disabilities to believe in themselves. Believe in what you can do. Maryam, with her disability, believes that what she wants is education and she is doing everything to pursue her dream, and ASUU is doing everything possible to ensure she achieves everything.”

Speaking further, Jauro commended PUNCH, explaining that the scholarship includes “some of the items she needs for her studies based on her own disability, things like a voice recorder, specialised table and chair, laptop and for every semester until her graduation, the union will be giving her a stipend of N130,000 per semester to cover her feeding and academic expenses.

“It was The PUNCH Newspaper publication that caught the attention of the President of ASUU and ours to begin the processes; without seeing that publication, we wouldn’t have known that there exists such a lady that needs assistance. We appreciate your efforts for good journalism,” Jauro added.

There is an unpopular herb that you can drink over a period of 1 year, the size will increase tremendously.
If you have reached your desired size, you must stop the herb immediately!

It doesn't really have much disadvantage like other penis enlargers out there.
The only side effect is that your sperm won't be able to produce a child.

What herb is that?

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a union consisting of academic staff from various universities in Nigeria. The union is responsible for negotiating the welfare and working conditions of its members. ASUU has been in existence since 1978 and has played a significant role in improving the quality of education in Nigeria.

Over the years, ASUU has faced several challenges in its quest to improve the welfare and working conditions of its members. One of the most significant challenges that the union has faced is the lack of support from the government. The government has consistently failed to meet the demands of the union, leading to strikes and disruption of academic activities.

ASUU has embarked on several strikes over the years to press home its demands. These strikes have had a negative impact on the quality of education in Nigeria. The disruption of academic activities has led to delays in the completion of academic programmes, resulting in students spending more time in school than necessary. This situation has also led to a decline in the quality of education in Nigeria, as some students have resorted to seeking education in other parts of the world.

The government needs to treat ASUU better because the union is a critical stakeholder in the education sector. ASUU is responsible for ensuring that the quality of education in Nigeria is up to standard. The government needs to provide the required support to ASUU to enable the union to carry out its responsibilities effectively.

One of the ways the government can treat ASUU better is by providing adequate funding for the education sector. The lack of funding has been one of the major challenges facing the education sector in Nigeria. The government needs to provide funding that will enable universities to provide the necessary infrastructure and equipment to improve the quality of education. The government should also provide funding that will enable universities to pay their staff competitive salaries and benefits.

The government should also ensure that ASUU's demands are met promptly. When ASUU makes demands, the government needs to act fast to address them. This will prevent the disruption of academic activities and ensure that students complete their programmes on time. The government should also engage ASUU in constructive dialogue to resolve any issues that may arise.

The government should also ensure that ASUU's members are not victimised for engaging in union activities. The victimisation of ASUU members has been a common occurrence in Nigeria. This situation has led to a decline in the morale of union members and has made it difficult for the union to carry out its responsibilities effectively. The government needs to ensure that ASUU's members are protected and that they can carry out their responsibilities without fear of victimisation.

This is the most senseless post i have ever seen in my life.. "My people surfer because of lack of knowledge" when you have no clue or understanding about a thing just STFU, no student is happy with the strike, However have you thought or seen the state of our educational system, you haven't seen students sitting on the floor to receive lectures ?... well during my time it happened , so oga go and read or make research as you lack, wisdom knowledge and understanding whatsoever.

Oga you won't be the first to sit on the floor to receive lectures.

I went through that process as well.

Experienced it during my secondary school days where I'll sit on the bare floor, or I use my polythene bag (where I keep my books) as chair.

The education system is going to improve in Nigeria, but we won't acheive anything tangible if the union keep striking every year.

(Note..I agree with you , but I want to draw your attention to some things)

1.ASUU goes on strike repeatedly because universites...need money.

2.No Nigerian university is in the top 100, or even top 500 global universities in the world...plus we cannot do advanced research in many things...for idnsutry, healthcare, etc...because...poor funding.

3.ASUU members want to work with high quality equipment, labs, libraries, lecture halls, and want better welfare for themselves, students and other staff.

4.Government rightly tells ASUU every time that the money is not sufficent.

5.So how do we stop ASUU from going on strike....raise fees. To levels like 1 million naira and above.

You don't like? But you just basically said that ASUU is wrong to go on strike.

Either fees go up, or in ten years private universites will surpass public universites. Guess who suffers more...the poor.

So why can't the government pay lecturers after failing to meet their part of the deal? If workers decide to accept this no work, no pay policy, government will surely weaponise poverty across board. They're already torturing the common man, including those who called themselves APC u.rchins. Many of them can no longer afford Chicken Republic rice yet rooting for politicians with private jets and oil wells grin

The citizens are the problems of this country. The federal government right now has budgeted Obasanjo and Jonathan's allowances for 2023 yet na lecturers be una problem. Lazy yoots! Yes oO...ASUU should have known better, even a year old toddler is very much aware Buhari doesn't give a damn about Education, it was glaring and obvious in his body language and that which was allocated to the Educational sector as captured in his yearly budgets...

But No...!! ASUU decided to dare Buhari, A whole Buhari ruling Nigeria with a NEPA bill certificate, A whole Buhari that once supported the agenda that education is a haram, No no no, you dare not touch the Tigers tail and go scout free, for months, FG pretended like ASUU was'nt in existence, One month salary turned into 2, 3 and counting but ASUU blatantly told the media their lecturers has other businesses and can sustain themselves for the next 5years that they are unshakable and unbothered even if the Universities would be shut down for 2years...

[i] The students were suffering and paying dearly with their GP's due to an accelerated and congested academic calendar with no time for rest in a session, most parents were gnashing their teeths because bills were piling up within an accumulated short time frame, most students lost their lives, most dropped out, businesses within school environment was totally shut down, market women exhausted and ate up their capital due to low demands signalling a sad end in there businesses, most students were still battling with their landlords for delayed payments for the rent owed in 2020/2021 and ASUU added 2022...!! wink [i]

But Hey, we are ASUU, we did not work for 7months, we want our full payments before we can call off the strike after all agreement has been met, it became another tussle entirely, 6months became 8months, and the FG registered CONUA, ASUU was about to become irrelevant and inconsequential due to the birth of a new child. Automatically, their tune changed and their ego was shattered, it dawned on them they have to obey the court order and called off the strike.

A strike of 8months ended up with absolutely nothing been achieved, UTAS which was top of their food chain was'nt implemented, Agreement of 2009 were fulfilled by mere words as usual, they only achieved an audio increment of salary which they smiled and became comfortable like a child who was about to receive a caprison from his mother, meaning all along, ASUU has only one mission in sight, they were only interested in there respective pockets and stomach infrastructural development.

The University is not your father's property, neither is it your generational inheritance, if you are not comfortable with the system after channelling your grievances, why not honourably resign or wait for a reputable government to assume power, afterall, most professors and lecturers were returning officers used to rig Buhari back to power in 2019 general elections, instead of subjecting the masses to a different language of self inflicted hardship in the name of fighting for the welfare of the students, can the same showboating of extreme arrogance be replicated in a private sector?? Now they want to eat their cake and have it.

ASUU should have known better, it's a case of "You won't know the effects until it starts affecting you"

You've said it all

Members are all adults who know the consequences of their actions by weighing the options, and I'm sure that they knew the name of the game. Last Catch: I've never seen a situation whereby EMPLOYEES, no matter how indispensable to the institution they think they are, direct their EMPLOYERS how to pay their salaries. Never!

They were only proving stubborn because they know that their paycheck is guaranteed in the long run

In my defense, ASUU has always been unreasonable in negotiations with the federal government.

ASUU were insisting on suffering themselves and the poor students by not calling off the strike.

They also claimed to be ok with the "No work, No Pay" policy.

Aside from that, we'll always see them insult the government at any given chance; either on social media or live TV.

They also said they were never going to beg the government because they were clearly the boss of them and not the other way around.

Why should they be paid when they were willing to stress the strike up until the next year unless they get what they want?

Why should they paid when they told students to sacrifice two years of their time for them?

Why can't they also sacrifice their salaries for the cause?

It's important to note that ASUU was willing to stress the strike for as long as they want because they were 100% sure of their paycheck before or after the strike has been called off.

If they get paid, who will compensate the students?

I am sure the students have already been compensated with exam timetables. And lecturers are preparing to come and stamp their foot on the ground in lecture theaters to brag about how they'll get paid whether they come to class or not.

I want to implore the federal government to adhere strictly to the "No work, No pay" policy.

This is the only way we can use to break ASUU's wing and allow our students to graduate at the appropriate time.

How long will the government keep begging ASUU? Year after year, ASUU must declare a strike!

In my opinion, the salary issue should also be tabled at the court of law. I will love to see them win that case in court

The "No work, No Pay" policy must stand in other to curb yearly strikes.

The ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke had in a recent interview noted that the lecturers had called off their action and returned to work but were challenged by the nonpayment of their eight months salaries which had posed a huge challenge for the lecturers to meet their daily needs and be able to discharge their responsibilities to the returning university students.

Mr. Odiir said the returning lecturers might not give their best because of the obvious challenge of lack of funds, “and that means that the universities would be reopened but teaching and learning might not take place because the lecturers are not motivated.

“So we are appealing to the Federal Government to fulfill its part of the bargain to effect the payment of the salaries of the returning lecturers to enable them fully resume work.

“There is no doubt that the lecturers would obey the court ruling and resume classes but they would certainly not be able to engage in lecturing if they don’t start getting their eight months salaries.

“That is why the Federal Government should pay them without further delay in the spirit of the agreement brokered by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“We also appeal to the Speaker to do a follow up to the good work he initiated to have the lecturers call off the action by impressing on all the relevant authorities to have the salaries paid so that our public universities can roar back to life.

It's been over 5 months since they called off strike. Has the government put any plan in place to meet their demands?

What was the outcome of the meetings with the house of Reps?
