Tomato pastes manufacturers in the country yesterday told the House of Representatives Joint Committees on Healthcare Services and Drugs and Narcotics that over 91.1 percent of tomato pastes in the country were fake and substandard. Some of the tomato pastes manufacturing companies that attended the public hearing were Dangote Farms, Erisco Foods Limited and Savanna Farms. In his submission, the legal adviser of Erisco Foods, Abdulraham Kadri told the committee that the company, alongside Dangote Farms and Savanna Farms, were not at the public hearing because of the financial damage substandard and fake tomato pastes had caused the country. He said if fake importation was not checked, farmers would lose their jobs. His position was collaborated by the chairman and chief executive officer of Erisco Foods, Chief Eric Umeofia who appealed to the committee to initiate a law or motion for immediate suspension of all tomato importation, which he alleged were substandard. Umeofia alleged that his company had been threatened by the regulatory agencies to close down his company, adding that NAFDAC served them with a letter that Erisco had no right to speak except being authorised. The acting director-general of NAFDAC represented by Prof. Samson Adebayo, director of Research and Services, stated that NAFDAC had not been compromised by importers. Adebayo hinted that the agency had fined Erisco Foods what it called administrative charge of N1 million for an alleged unauthorised advertisement of Erisco range of products without getting clearance and approval from the agency. He, however, debunked the allegations from Erisco Foods to the effect that all imported tomato pastes in the country were fake and substandard. Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, Hon. Chike John Okafor stated that there was allegation of tomato pastes imported from some Asian countries by some importers, which were found to contain carcinogens and other contaminants. According to him, “This allegation created panic, mistrust, fear and is suspected to be responsible for high death rate and the probable cause of the current cause of the current high cost and scarcity of tomatoes in the country. “Let me state in clear terms that this committee has a responsibility to protect the lives of the numerous Nigerian consumers who could be the victims of this alleged importation. “We totally condemn these alleged dangerous killer tomato pastes imported into Nigeria and we will carry out a comprehensive investigation into this matter, even if it will take us beyond the borders of Nigeria, including visiting the factories in Asia and other parts of the world to inspect the processing factories of NAFDAC approved Nigeria importers to get to the bottom of this allegation and bring the perpetrators to book.” In his opening address, speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara said the investigative public hearing stated that the House should not consider lightly allegations injurious to public health. source : http://nigerianpilot.com/tomato-pastes-in-nigeria-are-fake/

A former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Abubakar Lawal Yar’Adua, bought a posh home worth £890,000 in London using a secret offshore company he registered in the British Virgin Island. Documents retrieved from the Mossack Fonseca database, exclusively obtained by German newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and shared by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) with PREMIUM TIMES and other media organisations around the world, showed the offshore company to be Hydrocarbon Assets Investments Limited. Mr Yar’Adua bought the house in 2008, while serving as the Group Managing Director of the NNPC. He became NNPC GMD in August 2007, and was removed from office in January 2009. In April 2008, eight months after he became the GMD of NNPC, Mr. Yar’Adua used a London residence address at Beechwood Hall, Regents Park Road, London N3 3AT to register an offshore company, Hydrocarbon Assets Investments Limited in the British Virgin Island. British Virgin Island is a tax haven favoured by corrupt public officials, money launderers, celebrities and businessmen dealing in illicit finance. Mr. Yar’Adua, while serving as a public official violated Section 6(b) of the Code of Conduct Act which says a public office holder shall not, “except where he is not employed on full‐time basis, engage or participate in the management or running of any private business, profession or trade.” To cover his track, Mr. Yar’Adua prepared a corporate smokescreen by appointing two front companies to act as directors of Hydrocarbon Assets Investments Limited. Documents sighted by PREMIUM TIMES showed that on November 7, 2008, Mr. Yar’Adua was sole director of Hydrocarbon Assets Investments Limited. He resigned on the said day but appointed two companies, Gudson Limited and Roselle Limited as directors of his company. Additional documents scooped from the Mossack Fonseca files exposed how Mr. Yar’Adua utilized his Hydrocarbon Assets Investments Limited to secure a loan from Dexia Private Bank Limited in Jersey. This he used to purchase a property worth £890,000 in London. Dexia Private Jersey Limited, Hydrocarbon Assets Investment Limited and Mr. Yar’Adua signed the loan agreement on November 18, 2008. It was effected on December 2, 2008. The property, until now a secret, is located in a freehold estate at 28A North Crescent, Finchley, London N3 3LL. It was registered under the title number NGL624398. A freehold property refers to outright ownership of a property and land on which it stands. The owner of the land has no time limit to his period of ownership. Reinstated as director and signatory to account Following his exit from NNPC, Mr. Yar’Adua returned to Hydrocarbon to reclaim his position from the two directors holding who held fort for him. In 2010, the two Directors, J. Nizbeth Maduro, representing Gudson Limited and Bryan Scatliff,e representing Roselle Limited returned the power of attorney to Mr. Yar’Adua who soon became the authorized signatory to a bank account moved from Jersey to Luxembourg within the same bank, Dexia Banque International. A meeting of the Board of Directors of Hydrocarbon Hydrocarbon Assets Investments Limited was held in August 2010 at the Registered Office of the Company, Akara Building, Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Three resolutions were reached, one of which was “to grant as is hereby granted a Power of Attorney in favour of Lawal Abubakar Yar’Adua of passport No. A01418738 of 28a North Crescent, London N3 to act in accordance with the powers described on the page annexed hereto’. The meeting also “resolved to approve and authorize Mr. Lawal Abubakar Yar’Adua of 28a North Crescent, London N3 to be authorized signatory on the account to act individually and to sign all the documents and account opening forms in connection with the account with Dexia Banque International A Luxembourg.” I didn’t know what I did was wrong When Mr. Yar’Adua was contacted, he initially claimed his lawyer registered the company on his behalf, but later admitted he incorporated the company to buy a house in London. He suggested that PREMIUM TIMES’ report on the matter was an attempt to embarrass him. “This is just an attempt to embarrass me,” Mr. Yar’Adua said on telephone. “My children were there (London) and instead of paying rent, somebody advised me that I could get a loan and then I decided to take a mortgage so that when my children finished schooling I could sell it off, I didn’t know the implication.” When asked why, as a public office holder, he registered a secret company, and owned a foreign account in violation of the law, Mr. Yar’Adua said he was unaware that it was wrong for Nigerian public servants to take those actions. “Honestly, I was not aware,” he said. “Go ahead and embarrass me.” Mr. Yar’Adua and the Code of Conduct By his action, the former NNPC boss may have violated Nigeria’s Code of Conduct law and could be arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, a special court that tries public officers for any contravention of the Code of Conduct for Nigerian public officers as spelt out in the Fifth Schedule of the Nigerian constitution. The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) were established to enforce “a high standard of morality in the conduct of government business, and to ensure that the actions and behaviour of public officers conform to the highest standards of public morality and accountability.” The former official could be charged for failing to declare the company and its associated assets and for operating foreign accounts while being a public officer. The offences violate sections of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended. By Mohammed Shosanya, Lagos | Publish Date: May 3 2016 5:47AM. When the federal government recently unveiled plans to enter into a Joint Venture (JV) arrangement with investors to fund, rehabilitate and jointly operate Nigerian refineries, views of Nigerians became divided. Some view the development as proactive while others see it as another way of privatising the plants by the Buhari-led administration. Our reporter analyse the view points. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) recently said the Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) for the Nigeria’s four refineries gulped about $22 million, saving taxpayers $1.57 billion from the $1.6 billion earlier voted for the projects. The NNPC said $10 million, about 48 per cent of the total expenditure, was spent on the two refineries in Port Harcourt. The $22 million expenditure was a huge reduction from the $216 million, which the Sani Abacha-led regime spent for thesame purpose. The federal government is said to have spent over $2.036 billion on the TAM of the country’s refineries in the last 13 years. The administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo had set aside $369 million for the TAM of the nation’s four refineries, while the Abdulsalami Abubakar and Sani Abacha regimes spent $92 million and $216 million, respectively for the same purpose. In 2007, the NNPC claimed it awarded the contract for a comprehensive TAM on all the refineries to a Nigerian firm. The sum of $1.6 billion was voted for TAM of the four refineries across the country by the end of 2014. The 150,000 bpd Port Harcourt refinery was built in 1989. TAM operations were carried out in 1991, 1994 and 2000. The Kalu Idika Kalu Committee had, in May 2013 during a visit to the Port Harcourt Refinery, discovered its four boilers were not operative. Two out of the four power plants were dysfunctional. Besides, the committee found that there was evidence of poor maintenance with serious corrosion of major key units, just as morale of the workers was low and management was dysfunctional with little or no financial authority. The inoperative state of the refineries, for a long time, threw the nation into crisis, making the importation of oil into the country became an all-comers affair and fraudulent. In his argument, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, at this year’s May Day celebration in Abuja, urged the federal government to effectively fight corruption in the nation’s oil and gas sector. He said if corruption is arrested in the sector, the huge amount used in importing refined petroleum products could go into other productive ventures in the economy. No doubt, it is regrettable that maintenance of the nation’s refineries by previous governments were carried out at high costs. Yet, despite the questionable amounts spent on the maintenance, the refineries have remained unproductive, leaving Nigerians to wonder whether the assets were actually rehabilitated or used as avenues of siphoning resources. But the NNPC said the current JV deal on the three refineries, namely, 210,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD) Port Harcourt Refinery, Warri and Kaduna refineries with combined refining capacity of 445,000 bpsd, will also include, but not limited to, off-take of refined products for sale primarily in the Nigerian market. The corporation said the refineries will be jointly operated by NNPC and the selected investors for a defined period, until investments are fully recovered. The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), however, picked holes in the arrangement and warned the NNPC of the dangers of partnering investors as joint technical partners for the rehabilitation and operation of the refineries. NUPENG also expressed its reservation over NNPC’s invitation of pre-qualification for rehabilitation, upgrade, operatorship, management, maintenance and security of NNPC jetties, storage depots and pipeline infrastructure on joint venture partnership basis. The union said: “NUPENG believes that the current move by the NNPC is a form of privatisation, through the backdoor, of our national assets which is doomed to fail and bring about more hardship to the citizens, just the way the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) privatisation failed to bring the desired results but darkness all over the country. It stated that for security reasons and in the interest of protecting the jobs of oil and gas workers, the planned partnership will be resisted by NUPENG. It added that no investor will want to put his money in the joint venture partnership arrangement without having a say in the running of the refineries, storage depots and jetties. Similarly, a leader in the nation’s oil sector has faulted the modality employed by the authorities to refurbish the refineries, saying it smells of government’s desire to sell the refineries under the guise of joint venture. An oil and gas expert, Bola Andrew, however, said there is nothing wrong with the arrangement the government intends to employ to rehabilitate the refineries and efficiently run the facilities. He said: I believe there is nothing wrong with the joint venture between the federal government and partners to run the refineries. So, there is no cause for alarm over the implementation of the deal. For me, the joint agreement will be a clear departure from the previous manner of turning around the nation’s refineries for efficiency and profitability.” Stakeholders in the oil and gas sector are, therefore, waiting to see whether or not the intended model to refurbish the nation’s refineries would work, buoys the country’s refining capacity and minimise oil products importation. The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce the directive on data roll-over given by the Minister of Communications Adebayo Shittu. Shittu had recently ordered the telecommunications companies, the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and all other companies offering ict products and services to be rolling over their subscribers’ unused data / internet services post expiration. But NATCOMS’ President Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo told Daily Trust yesterday that the service providers have yet to start implementing the minister’s directive. He said the NCC should ensure compliance by all telcos, ISP’s and other ICT companies in order to stop the rip off and put smile on the faces of subscribers. He said: “We commend the consumer-centric move by the Minister of Communications, but the operators are yet to comply with the directive. We, consumers, are still being ripped off of our data. Why should the operators force me to exhaust in a particular period what I used my money to buy? If they insist on doing this, I think we should enjoy the right of roll-over; that is if my data still remains in a particular period. So the minister should call on NCC to as a matter of urgency enforce his directive.” Source : http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/it-world/ncc-urged-to-enforce-minister-s-directive-on-data-roll-over/144871.html

Olalekan Adetayo and Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja In a continuation of the probe into how the Peoples Democratic Party allegedly bribed some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission before the 2015 presidential election, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested an oil tycoon, Mr. Laitan Adesanya, for his alleged role in the $115m (N23bn) bribe funds. It was learnt on Sunday that Adesanya, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Lenoil Nigeria Limited, was arrested by the EFCC in Lagos on Friday. The anti-graft agency had, last week, arrested the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr. Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo and the bank’s Head of Operations, Mr. Martin Izuogbe. Adesanya was alleged to have handed $1.85m to the bank based on the instruction of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. Other companies, which allegedly handed over money to the bank MD, included Northern Belt Gas Company Limited ($60m); Auctus Integrated ($17.8m); and Midwestern Oil and Gas ($9.5m). Diezani was also alleged to have given the bank MD $26m in cash which was ultimately disbursed to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2015 presidential election as bribes. A reliable source at the EFCC said Adesanya was in the custody of the commission in Lagos and was being grilled as of Friday. He said, “We are asking him about the $1.85m he dropped and what purpose it was supposed to serve.” According to the United Kingdom Financial Times, Adesanya is an international oil businessman, who has been in the business for decades. The newspaper states that Adesanya made huge profits during the military administrations of the 1980s and 1990s. Also, sources within the EFCC have denied claims by Fidelity Bank Plc that it reported all its financial dealings to the appropriate authorities The bank had, in a statement last week, stated that “transactions were duly reported as required by the regulators and the bank is cooperating fully with the authorities on the investigation.” However, the source said the $26m, which the MD allegedly collected directly from Diezani, was neither reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria nor the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, which is domiciled in the EFCC. The source added, “The $26m cash that was collected from Diezani was not deposited into any account. So, how could they say they reported it? They didn’t report anything because the money was given to the bank for safekeeping and there was no intention for it to be used to open an account. “If it was put in the system, then, there must be records. Who brought the money? They don’t know. They were supposed to have reported the transaction to the CBN and NFIU, which is domiciled in the EFCC but there is no such report. “The money was meant for distribution to INEC officials. When the bank MD was collecting $26m cash from a serving minister, why didn’t he ask her where she got the money from?” Source: http://www.punchng.com/efcc-arrests-oil-baron-n23bn-bribery-scam/

The long arm of the law finally descended on a major buyer of stolen mobile phones in Lagos when he was arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command. In a rare feat, he has confessed to buying over 4,256 mobile phones from robbers and ‘one chance’ gangs operating within the metropolis. The suspect, 42-year-old Kazeem Bamidele, who is the Second Vice Chairman of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers’ (NURTW), Ajegunle Unit, equally confessed to the RRS Intelligence Team that he has over 52 boys in Lagos State, who steal and sell “clean phones” to him constantly. Bamidele, popularly known as “Elewure” in the social circle, was arrested, when the RRS Intelligence Team quizzed two stolen phone users in Kogi State in connection with abduction and robbery cases in Lagos State. The operatives had upon returning from a weeklong investigation in Port Harcourt, Enugu and Kogi State, swung into action by arresting Elewure at his shop in Boundary Market, Ajegunle, after he was fingered to have been the seller of two Blackberry Z10 phones collected from victims of robbery and abduction incidents in Lagos. Bamidele said: “I have over 52 boys who sell clean stolen mobile phones to me. On the average, I receive 38 ‘clean’ phones in a week. I have been in the business for more than two years. “Boundary Market in Ajegunle where I have office and shop, is where they sell the phones to me and that is where the buyers equally get them. I know they are stolen phones. Nearly every guy in Ajegunle is involved in this kind of runs. It is what they do to survive. “I was pushed into the business by family pressure. I have two wives and seven children. I have so many dependents. What I pay as school fees alone is staggering. I have faced too many problems in life. My mother gave birth to 13 children for my father. Though both of them are no more, only three of us are left and I am the breadwinner of the family. “My first wife’s children are part of the predicament I have. Since I married the second wife, I have not known peace. Can you believe that since I was arrested, she has not called or visited me? I know this is a lesson for me in life. I started out in life as ‘elubo’, pepper and maize grinder. I know that most of these phones were gotten from pickpocketing, one chance and robbery. “I buy Infinix Hot 2 at N10,000 and sell at N12,000; Blackberry Z30 at N20,000 and sell at N22,000; Infinix Hot Note at N15,000 and sell at N17,000 and Samsung Galaxy X3 at N11,000 and sell at N14,000. I don’t buy iPhone because of its locking system,” he narrated. Investigators revealed that as at the time of his arrest, five stolen mobile phones were found with him. He is presently helping the police to pick up his boys from their hideouts, bus stops and routes of operations. Already, two commercial buses used for robbery and ‘one chance’ operations have been impounded at RRS Headquarters in Alausa. According to the Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of police, “the command is following up the suspect’s revelations and making steady progress in the investigation of the case. The suspect has been transferred to SARS for further interrogation.” Source: http://m.guardian.ng/news/how-i-receive-sell-38-clean-handsets-weekly/

Attention, attention, attention, Girls! Remember that earring you found in his car, but he said he bought for you? Well, it could be that his side chic forgot it in the car. And the last time he dashed into the kitchen to inform you that his friend, Emeka, just called him to say that the filling station 10kms away was selling fuel and he had to go, that could just be his other girlfriend calling to confirm a rendezvous. A perfect lie for this season of no fuel. Oh my dear, be sure that he did not cancel your last hangout because the other woman insisted on spending time with him. And he might have told you that his boss gave him an emergency call. Of course, you’d let him go because you don’t want him to lose his job. Truth be told, scamming comes in different packages and identifying the ruses used by your boyfriend, is key in determining whether you want your relationship to progress or not. I’m not being partial. I am sure the statistics exist somewhere under the sun, which proves that men lie to their partners more than women do, (don’t ask me for the survey results though, because I don’t have it). Don’t get me wrong, lying is universal and one of the sins everyone from every race, regardless of gender or profession, commits. But the male species, especially boyfriends are in a different category. So, here are some lies you are likely to have been told and fallen for. When you’ve never met any relative (especially mom): Before you ask, no, friends, “buddies” and colleagues don’t count. Your boyfriend should be proud of you and willing to show you off to important people in his life like his mother, his mentor, the high school teacher that saved him from the life of drugs and living under bridges, his little sister, and so on. Most ladies believe that when their boyfriend introduces them to friends, he is staking a claim. But that’s not true. In fact, some of these so called friends haven’t even been friends with him for long. He might have just met them at a bar and they bonded talking about football and how many girls they’ve conquered. Be wise. And realize that if he hides you or discourages you from meeting his family, then he might be lying to you about something. When you find articles of female clothing in his room or car: We must have all encountered this scenario. You “innocently” open a drawer in his room and see a pair of female underwear that’s definitely not yours. Of course your mind goes wild, you start thinking murder and swear it’d rain fire and brimstone. Finally, when you confront him with the exhibit, he says the underwear is for his sister, she must’ve packed it with his clothes when she was doing laundry. Huh! Like seriously… His sister did that? Dear, don’t be too sure that is true. When a particular phone number keeps calling his line: Of course he won’t save the number with a name you can easily suspect and you will be accused of checking his phone. But girls, do not be deluded into thinking it is wrong for you to do that. In fact, I can assure you that people who claim they don’t check their spouse’s phones are the most culpable. So check away. Expectedly, he’d say it’s a friend or a new business partner or his mother’s new line. Don’t be scammed. Granted, he could be telling the truth, but he might be lying too. So copy the number and call. Just hear the voice and cut the call. Now you have your answer. What will you do about it? When he comes home later than usual: It’s a rule of thumb that as soon as your partner starts keeping late night, he has a secret. Do you want to find out what the secret(s) is or are? Then don’t ask him. He might lie, he was out with the boys, the meeting took longer than he expected, there was traffic, the car broke down, there was an accident on the road, blah, blah, blah. All lies! Believe them at your own peril anyway. Trusting your boyfriend should come naturally. When it doesn’t, believe your intuition, sister. When he stops eating your food: Every woman will agree that cooking for your beloved is not always an enjoyable task. But we do it anyway, out of loyalty, love or just because you feel it’s your responsibility. So I can imagine your perplexity when said beloved doesn’t eat the meal you labored over. Excuses are always at hand. He’s tired, he had a late lunch, he has a stomach ulcer, etc. Proceed with caution. If he still doesn’t eat the delicacies you’re preparing, then another woman might be feeding him. Just saying. We all know the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. To add insult to injury, they will claim they were shielding you from the truth or that you weren’t in the capacity to accommodate the truth. Really! A lie is a lie and saying you didn’t want to hurt me with the truth does not make me feel better. Right?! Don’t come to the worst assumption. For every lie you suspect, keep it to yourself and gather enough evidence to support your cause. Being harmed with enough exhibits, he won’t be able to deny your liberation. And you know what they say; the truth will set you free. I rest my case… for now at least. Source : http://thenationonlineng.net/dont-scammed-boyfriend-might-lying/

To meet Ugwuanyi as fear grips another Enugu community over fresh invasion. Two cobblers reportedly injured in reprisal. Tobi Soniyi, Omololu Ogunmade, Adebiyi Adedapo in Abuja and Christopher Isiguzo in Enugu. Following the outrage that followed the attack on the Ukpabi Nimbo community in Enugu State on Monday leading to the deaths of scores of people, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday finally broke his silence on the rising waves of attacks by unknown cattle rearers in different parts of the country. He ordered the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Solomon Arase, Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, and the Department of State Services (DSS) to fish out the herdsmen who terrorise and kill innocent Nigerians. Buhari spoke on the directive to the security chiefs as the special guest of honour at the launch of a book, “Who Will Love My Country: Ideas for Building the Nigeria of Our Dreams”, written by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja. Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, condemned the senseless killings by the herdsmen in the strongest terms and expressed sympathy for those who lost their loved ones and property in the wicked acts. The president, who further said he had asked the security chiefs to secure communities terrorised by the herdsmen, warned that his government would not fold its arms and allow the cruel acts to continue. “Let me start by condemning in the strongest terms the attacks by herdsmen in Enugu State on Monday. I deeply sympathise with those who lost their lives as well as those who lost their property. “I have directed the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police to secure all communities under attacks by herdsmen and to go after the groups terrorising innocent people all over the country. This government will not allow these attacks to continue,” he said. Also a statement by the president’s spokesman, Mr. Garba Shehu, said Buhari unreservedly condemned the attack on the Ukpabi Nimbo community and other such acts of extreme violence against communities in other states of the Federation. The statement from the presidency said ending the recent upsurge of attacks on communities by herdsmen reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons was now a priority of the Buhari administration’s agenda for enhanced national security and the Armed Forces, adding that the police have clear instructions to take all necessary actions to stop the carnage. “Acting on the president’s directive, the Inspector General of Police and heads of the nation’s other security agencies are already taking urgent steps to fully investigate the attacks, apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” it added. The president assured all Nigerians, once again, of his administration’s continued commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in all parts of the country. The statement added that in keeping with the president’s directive, the IG, the General Officer Commanding the 82nd Division of the Nigerian Army and the Director of the DSS in Enugu State had visited Ukpabi Nimbo to personally oversee investigations into the attack on the community and ongoing efforts to apprehend the culprits. It further revealed that Buhari was scheduled to meet with Enugu State Governor, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, wednesday to receive further briefing on the attack on Ukpabi Nimbo and discuss additional measures to forestall similar attacks and restore public confidence. The president urged all Nigerians to remain calm and gave the assurance of his administration’s readiness to deploy all required personnel and resources to remove this new threat to the collective security of the nation. At the book launch, Buhari commended Ekweremadu for taking time out of his busy schedule to write a book about governance in Nigeria and called for an attitudinal change by public officers, saying anyone who loves his country would shun corruption and impunity. The president stated that Nigerians could only secure the Nigeria of their dreams if they placed the nation’s interest above their individual interests. He said the 2016 budget was designed to bring Nigerians out of poverty, improve their standard of living and put smiles on their faces. He added: “The N500 billion social intervention fund is designed to, among others, create jobs for 500,000 unemployed graduates; provide loans for one million Nigerians, including market men and women, as well as for artisans to start their businesses. “It also includes feeding of 4.5 million students in schools. Nigerians can only have and live in the country of their dreams by shunning corruption and desist from converting public property for personal usage or diverting public funds to their private pockets.” In his opening remark, chairman of the occasion and a former military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), commended Ekweremadu for investing his time and energy to write a book which he described as a wake-up call and thought- provoking move. He said from the title of the book, it was easy to conclude that Ekweremadu had embarked on a journey of self- discovery hinged on patriotism. He was of the view that the motivation to write the book arose from the circumstances of Nigeria’s contemporary history as he recalled how “we fought a war to remain united, indivisible nation… because we believed and still believe that what binds us together is far greater than what divides us”. Like Buhari, Gowon said nobody could claim to love his country and engage in corruption, “which l believe that the current leadership will tackle”. He prayed that the insurgency or Fulani herdsmen’s menace would not divide Nigeria, adding: “With the help of God and cooperation of the citizenry and the gallant security forces, we shall soon conquer.” Ekweremadu, in his remarks, called on Nigerian leaders to govern effectively and also use the power at their disposal wisely, noting that doing so was the only way to safeguard the interest of the citizens. He counselled Nigerians to show greater love for their fatherland by rising above tribal, ethnic, religious and political persuasions in the overriding interest of the country. According to him, to love Nigeria would entail critically revising and re-examining individual attitudes, values and simultaneously treating one another with dignity, adding: “It demands of us some sacrifice.” He emphasised the need to bequeath good governance and system to the children, asking rhetorically, “Are we going to bequeath to them a banner stained by corruption, bad governance, ineffective leadership, ethnicity, slacking moral values, decadence, mediocrity, and sloth? God forbid!” But even as the president ordered the apprehension of the marauding cattle rearers, tension gripped the residents of Ameke Umuchigbo community in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State following the reported invasion of the area yesterday by suspected herdsmen. The Police Commissioner in the state, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, however dismissed the alleged invasion as a false alarm, stating that when “we received the information, I immediately despatched the DPO, Area Commander and the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, but the report they returned with showed there was nothing like that”. Despite the dismissal, a source in the community told newsmen that there was indeed a disagreement between residents in the community and some herdsmen but refused to state whether the disagreement degenerated into violence. “Trouble started this afternoon. The causality figure is not yet known. School children were even asked to go home,” he said. It was further gathered that a herdsman stabbed an Umuchigbo citizen, leading to a retaliatory attack by the community. “Today, the herdsmen mobilised to attack a school. Umuchigbo mobilised and managed to chase them away; all is now calm. However, there are genuine concerns that they will return anytime soon,” the source said. But further checks by THISDAY showed that some indigenes attacked two cobblers of Hausa-Fulani stock with matchetes, resulting in serious injuries. They were however rushed to the hospital, according to a police source.. Source: http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/04/28/finally-buhari-orders-security-chiefs-to-apprehend-marauding-herdsmen/

its a pity. i had a first hand experience in a filling station (cant remember the name but can identify) at ijede road in ikorodu on the 2/4/16 at about 1634 HRS . saw some DPR guys(3 of them) in that filling station with their official hillux van with DPR registered number plate. the filling station was selling at #190. i was mad and those DPR guys were there watching. what pained me most was after buying my fuel, i didnt make any attempt to snap their vehicle parked in the filing station, the DPR guys and the name of the filling station with the amount they collected from me. would have just sent it to their head office in VI or i-witness news on channels tv. next time sha. |
Nigeria Government Denies Report Of Petroleum Minister's Sack. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has described as “completely false” a widely circulated report that its Group Managing Director, Ibe Kachikwu, has been relieved of his job by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying the Minister of State for Petroleum is still carrying out his duties as assigned to him by the president. An unconfirmed report announcing the purported dismissal of Mr. Kachikwu had suddenly emerged on the Internet on Thursday afternoon. The report, which did not cite any official sources, also said Mr. Buhari had named Maikanti Baru, NNPC Group Executive Director, as Mr. Kachikwu’s replacement as head of the country’s oil company. But in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday evening, the Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Garba-deen Mohammed, said the news is untrue. “The story is completely false,” Mr. Mohammed said. “It should be ignored by all Nigerians.” “The minister is currently in his office and has continued to function in the roles assigned to him by the president.” Also, a top official in the presidency who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter said Mr. Kachikwu remained the Minister of Petroleum and the GMD of NNPC and urged Nigerians to disregard the news of his sack. Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, told PREMIUM TIMES he could not immediately comment as he was in Côte d’Ivoire attending the conference of all African ministers of tourism. source : http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/202215-nigerian-government-denies-reports-petroleum-minister-kachikwus-sack.html |
