BusinessRe: Why Shell, Chevron, Other Oil Majors Are Leaving Nigeria. by obo389(op): 12:35pm On Apr 18, 2021
I remember those days in warri when oil servicing firms, Schlumberger, shell and the likes were on ground, the economy in warri was seriously booming.
You will whites living their normal lives but immediately kidnapping and the insecurity stared, they all ran to porthacourt.
At a point, PH not helping maters with these same kidnapping and insecurity issues there that their businesses and livelihood was threatened.
The whole oil and gas environment looks so docile.
The government too not doing enough and they all know with the passage of the PIB, it will unlock whatever potentials all stalkholders will benefit from and yet, you wonder when will the bill be passed.
BusinessWhy Shell, Chevron, Other Oil Majors Are Leaving Nigeria. by obo389(op): 12:16pm On Apr 18, 2021
Fresh insights as to why the oil majors are gradually scaling down their operations and planning their exit from the country has been unraveled.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that among the oil majors, including Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil, Total and Eni, are cutting billions in spending after taking hits to their profits, thus shifting money to renewable fuels and focusing only on the most cost-effective markets.

Checks by The Nation further revealed that the country was able to attract only $3 billion, or 4%, out of the $70 billion committed on new projects in Africa between 2015 and 2019, a development experts say, does not bode well for economy which relies on oil receipts to survive.

Nigeria’s loss has been the gains of other African countries such as Angola, Sao Tome and Principe, where some of the IOCs have made major investments in recent years.

In Sao Tome & Principe for instance, is now being heavily courted by oil companies from far and near. Notably, a consortium of US firms, including Chevron Texaco and ExxonMobil where among the first to secure oil license along with a Norwegian company, EER, which netted over $70million with many other prospects.

Confirming this development, Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Onogba Christian, while fielding question from our correspondent on the sidelines of the “Stakeholders Forum on The Environment” facilitated by the Institute of Directors Nigeria (IoD) Port Harcourt chapter, said oil majors like Shell, Chevron and others may have been compelled by the present socioeconomic realities that has made the current operating environment bad for their business to plan their exit from the country.

Specifically, he said: “The first ominous signs that presented itself was the deliberate efforts by the international oil companies (IOCs) to relocate their headquarters outside the Niger Delta region. When that happened few years back, it was a bad signal.

“Of course, you cannot lay all the blame on the IOCs entirely because no businessman wants to invest in an area where insecurity is a big issue. The problem really has to do with the issue third party interference, poor legislation among other factors which are genuine reasons to affect investment decisions, he stressed.

To address this issue, the government, he maintained, must ensure that there is an enabling environment for business to thrive. “I’m convinced that once there is a level of assurance that their investments can be guaranteed many of these oil managers that have exited the country will come back,” Christain assured.

Echoing similar sentiments, Chief Prof. Jasper Jumbo, Chairman/CEO, Niger Delta Projects Consortium Limited, said, “Nobody wants to do business in an environment of chaos. Once peaceful co-existence is a challenge no business can survive under such a circumstance.”

International energy companies working in Nigeria are worried that proposals in the country’s long-delayed oil industry law will deter investment in new offshore projects.

In a joint presentation, the OPTS urged lawmakers to remove a proposed hydrocarbon tax as producers will still be subject to companies income tax.

“Our review of the Petroleum Industry Bill shows that deepwater provisions do not provide a favorable environment for future investments and for the launching of new projects,” Mike Sangster, managing director of Total SE’s Nigeria unit, told lawmakers at a hearing in Abuja, the capital recently.

To boost new investment, the proposed law should grant deepwater oil projects full royalty relief for the first five years of production or a graduated royalty program, said Sangster, speaking on behalf of the Oil Producers Trade Section, a group of 30 producers including Total, Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and Eni SpA, which he chairs.

The bill — legislation that’s two decades in the making — will streamline how Nigeria’s energy assets are operated and funded. First presented in parliament in 2008, progress in passing the bill was held up by political wrangling and objections from international oil companies that say the government is demanding an excessive increase in revenues.

The persistent failure to pass the bill “has been a major drag” on the oil and gas sector, Ahmad Lawan, president of Nigeria’s Senate, said last January as he opened two days of public hearings on the proposed legislation. The delays have harmed the country’s ability to “attract both local and foreign capital” at a time of greater competition with other resource-rich nations, he said.

Despite not siting its Africa's office in Nigeria, Twitter made clear its target market is Nigeria.

Twitter, the microblogging and social networking service, has announced that it is actively building a team in Ghana and is considering opening an office there.

The company in a post by Kayvon Beykpour and Uche Adegbite, Twitter’s Product Lead, and Director, Product Management, Global Markets, respectively, on Monday said, “Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana.”

The social networking service said its new team members would be working remotely under its work-from-home policies while it explores “the opportunity to open an office in Ghana in the future”.

Amid reactions from Nigerians that the continent’s biggest market was snubbed, Twitter said it chose Ghana as the country is a champion of democracy.

It said its decision was informed by Ghana’s “support for free speech and online freedoms.”

It added that Ghana’s recent appointment to host the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) also influenced its decision.

Twitter targets Nigerians for roles

Despite not siting its Africa’s office in Nigeria, Twitter made clear its target market is Nigeria, apparently given its population.

In its job advertisements, the company said of its curator positions: “This role is based in Accra, Ghana and focused on Nigeria.”

It said the ideal candidate to occupy the positions “should have a deep, non-partisan, understanding of Nigerian news and politics.”

It also said candidates with understanding of English Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo, will have advantage.

According to statista.com, in 2020 alone, the number of social media users in Nigeria reached roughly 28 million. Of this figure, 61.4 per cent have active Twitter handles.

However, in Ghana, it said as of January 2021, Ghana registered approximately eight million active social media users, up from six million in 2019. And of this figure, only 28.78 per cent are registered on Twitter.

RomanceRe: Buttressing The Idea That Sleeping With A Married Person Brings Bad Luck- My Exp by obo389(m): 7:45pm On Apr 11, 2021
Barbiturate:
I will like to shed more light on this thread below:

https://www.nairaland.com/6499558/ever-bad-luck-after-premarital

Yes. Sleeping with a married woman/man can bring bad luck.

My Story:

She came to my office seeking to be a vendor for the company I use to work for. Black beauty, busty and good ass. After coming to meet me for about 3 times, I decided to make her a vendor with little supply; low PO(purchase order) value. After some days, I wooed her and invited her over to my place. I had asked ab initio, if she was married and she said No! No ring on her finger.

We had sex and after the sex I discovered she wasn't happy. I asked and she said nothing.
Later, I increased the value of the PO and even directed her to a bank where she could get loan for the supply. Bank marketers usually come to my office asking me to send down my vendors to their office for PO financing.

After some few months I was transferred to another state. She came to my new office with a bulgy pregnancy and I got so shocked. I immediately took her outside for questioning.
She said she was sorry for not telling me she was married. She said she did it cos she wanted the PO badly. Her husband lost his job and she wanted to do something to help out. She said she was pregnant the day we had sex and she was sad cos she cheated on her husband.
I prepared a PO for her to supply, with a very high value.
After some months she called that she lost her babies(twins) while giving birth. I felt so bad for her.

Not quite long after the incident, I lost my job. Came to Lagos. Stayed few years at home, got another job in Delta......lost it within 6 months. Came back to Lagos again. Stayed some years jobless. Got another job, lost it within 2 years. While all these were going, all the relationships I ventured into, crashed. I got another job in Lagos and lost it within a year.
I had lost so many job opportunities....I mean jobs that I had almost gotten would just slip away!
Nothing has really been working in my life since then.

I tried calling the lady but for years her number has been switched off. I guess she doesn't use the number anymore. I have prayed and prayed for forgiveness.

It is really not my fault cos she lied, but then I should have been more careful. I should have paid attention to little detail about her.

Maybe the sex wasn't the cause of my misfortune.....I really don't know, all I know is that my life was going on smoothly before the sex with her.

Please, you all should desist from sleeping with married men/women.

That it didn't affect Mr/Mrs A, doesn't mean it can't affect you, if you try it.
Brother, take it easy on yourself and keep praying and believing that God will come though for you. Thank God you didn't know the lady in question is married.
Secondly, try look for that lady at all cost and seek for forgiveness from her.
You could never know.
Some things happen to teach us and others, who have intentions about things a lesson.
God bless us all.

CultureGermany To Return Benin Bronze Back To Nigeria by obo389(op): 3:18pm On Mar 23, 2021
Germany has entered into historic talks to restitute its holdings of Benin bronzes to their home country of Nigeria. The move will have wide-ranging consequences for German museums, not least Berlin’s splashy new Humboldt Forum, and major implications for the growing campaign for restitution across Europe.

Last week, the head of the German foreign ministry’s culture department, Andreas Görgen, traveled to Benin City to enter into discussions with Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki over the contested Benin bronzes, a historic array of bronze reliefs, carved ivory, and other sculptures that were looted from Benin City by British troops in 1897 when they razed the royal Benin palace in a punitive expedition. Swathes of these objects are today spread out across museums in the West.
Now, Germany says it will return its share of these treasured artworks and artifacts to Nigeria to display at the Edo Museum of West African Art, a museum at the former palace site in Benin City, which is being designed by architect David Adjaye to incorporate some of the ruins.

Full ownership of the museum objects is expected to be transferred to Nigerian officials. In a press statement after their meeting last week, Obaseki confirmed that his government is preparing to launch an independent trust, made up of “the Royal Family, Edo State Government, the Federal Government, and international stakeholders,” to receive the objects.

Görgen said that the German government would assist with the Nigerian program, helping with training and archeological projects onsite, and that he would “ensure the retrieval of the objects.”

Hartmut Dorgerloh, director of the Humboldt Forum, told Artnet News that restitution has not been formally decided and that original reporting on the subject, which stated that the objects will not go on display at Humboldt Forum, were misleading. The Berlin Ethnological Collection, which is set to go on display at the new museum, includes about 530 historical objects from the Kingdom of Benin, including 440 bronzes.

“As far as we know today, the Benin bronzes were largely acquired illegally,” Dorgerloh said in a statement sent to Artnet News, adding that he shares the conviction that there must and will be restitutions, but that the decision will be made by the Foundation Council of the SPK. “What consequences these decisions will ultimately have for the planned presentation of Benin bronzes at the Humboldt Forum is currently being discussed and will decided in consultation with the partners in Nigeria,” Dorgerloh said. “One thing is certain, the exhibition will address the injustices.”
In his press statement last week, Obaseki seemed to indicate that some form of international co-operation was not off the table. “Culture is a living thing,” he said. “Yes, the objects are from Benin but today they are global. So, the idea of having a universal display is something that we cannot run away from.”

Jürgen Zimmerer, a history professor at the University of Hamburg, welcomed the move from the German government, saying it will “fuel the global debate and put pressure on museums around the world, from the British Museum to the Field Museum in Chicago.”

The Humboldt Forum, which officially opened in December, is a €677 million reconstruction of Germany’s former Prussian palace, which has reignited long-simmering debates about Germany’s role in colonialism in the Global South. “The German leaders in politics and museums have run into a dead end,” Zimmerer told Artnet News. “To open the Humboldt Forum in the rebuilt City Palace—this Prussian Disneyland—without having a concept for dealing with looted art—was a disaster.”

Zimmerer noted that this recent announcement is only the tip of the iceberg, as Germany’s problematic holdings of historical objects are vast. “Whether there is a substantial change in policy will be seen in the handling of the dinosaur in the Natural History Museum and the Nefertiti in the Neues Museum, both in Berlin, but above all in the recognition of the genocide of the Herero and Nama, where nothing has been done for years.”

Though a detailed agreement has not been officiated, the news marks an important progression for the growing campaign across Europe for museums to restitute colonial objects from their collections. Other major holdings of the Benin Bronzes are within the British Museum in London and the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, as well as 25 other museums around Germany.
Pressure for European nations to restitute and atone for their dark colonial legacies has mounted exponentially in recent years. In 2017, the French president Emmanuel Macron declared that African heritage should not longer be held prisoner in French museums, and began a slow march towards developing its own policy for restitution. In 2018, Germany published guidelines for how to manage its colonial holdings and, the following year, released funding for research into provenance of these objects. German state ministers also made a joint declaration on the handling of colonial collections, including the support of restitution where appropriate.

Dan Hicks, scholar and author of The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution, told Artnet News that the news reports will “catalyze discussions” among other stakeholders in “the more than 160 museums that currently hold some ten thousand objects looted in 1897.”

“For many, the most striking dimension will be the prospect of restitution of royal and sacred artworks taken by the British being led by a German museum,” Hicks added. “If it’s deemed unacceptable to display these objects on Berlin’s Museum Island, what does this mean for the 45 or more museums in the UK that have Benin objects?”
