PoliticsRe: Aisha Buhari, Bags And Fleas by ochukoccna(op): 8:17am On Aug 11, 2016
Buhari’s lack of patriotism, and insensitivity to the plight of the citizens are being aggravated his wife. She is in the news for toting a Hermes Birkin bag worth $105,000, which is more than N40 million in our local currency during her trip to the United States. This is not surprising because Mrs. Buhari sent a sufficient notice about the direction she would take as the wife of the president. Remember? Just a year ago, during the inauguration of her husband as president, she scandalised the poor citizens who voted her husband into office by wearing an out-of-the-way wristwatch. To be sure, no one says that the wife of the president is doomed to wearing clothes that would only portray her as one of the wretched of the earth. Yes, she should wear what would befit her office as the wife of the president. But even if Mrs. Buhari made her mark in fashionable society before, now that her husband is president, her sartorial taste should reflect a consciousness of the difficult economic circumstances of the citizens. More importantly, what the poor citizens want to remember the wife of the president for is that she spoke on their behalf while her husband was the president. She may not write a newspaper column like Eleanor Roosevelt . But they want to remember her, like Eleanor Roosevelt, as having spoken for human rights, children’s causes and women issues.
Forget about all the pretentions of our leaders to work for the interest of the citizens. We must be alert to the fact that due to the mis-governance of our leaders, we are confronted with the danger of a replication of the post-apartheid South African society as depicted by Zakes Mda’s in the Ways of Dying. Mda fictionalises a South Africa where the bleak lot of the poor has compelled them to be cooking food on the fires of a funeral pyre, feeding on human waste and human corpse and drinking their own urine to quench their thirst . Amidst this suffering, the wealthy class who made their riches off the suffering of the poor do not spare a thought for the latter. Mda illustrates this with two characters, Toloki and Nefolovhodwe. Toloki is one of the downtrodden who instead of assuming the position of a mendicant with a bowl chooses to maintain his dignity by looking for a job to sustain himself. When Toloki approaches Nefolovhodwe, a village acquaintance who has made it big in the city for a job, the latter does not take notice of his presence. When he does, it is to express his outrage at Toloki who has come to disturb his playing with his fleas.

Despite the economic crisis facing Nigeria and the rest part of the world, our leaders are like Nefolovhodwe. They have already attained political power and wealth on the back of the citizens. Now they are playing with their fleas: bags, sirens, public and private jets, bogus salaries and allowances and fat pensions. They feel disturbed by a reminder that the citizens are suffering and that they need employment and money to put food on their tables.
The poor citizens who are hungry, selling some of their children to feed their siblings who have dropped out of school, and the other citizens who are contemplating suicide are not impressed with whatever their leaders are wearing. They feel that they are in an emergency and they expect their leaders to also think like that. They expect their leaders to demonstrate a sense of urgency that is similar to that of a medical doctor performing a surgery on a patient. Can you imagine such a doctor being concerned with how beautiful her dressing is? Can you imagine such a doctor being pre-occupied with the politics of 2019?

Indeed, all the citizens expect is for their leaders to provide succour. They expect their leaders to provide the genuine hope that though today is bleak, their future is bright . But with the kind of leaders we have now who want to be remembered by how much their caps strove to reach the sky and their sartorial elegance and that of their spouses, the citizens may have to wait longer for reprieve. Or those who cannot wait may just have to swell the data of suicides in this turbulent economic time.

A tragic irony that has imperiled our collective wellbeing and has indeed precipitated the nation’s current political and economic ruination is the readiness of the citizens to brook their leaders’ dereliction of duty while still wishing that they chart an uncommon trajectory of national development.

We watch our leaders loot the treasury and appropriate our national resources as the extension of their private estates. But let some years roll by, then we suffer collective amnesia and we launch into a revisionism that casts national villains in the mould of heroes to whom the citizens are eternally obliged .

If the President Muhammadu Buhari presidency fails to break itself from floundering and is unable to positively impact the citizens, there would still be people who would insist that he contributed immeasurably to national development. After all, he detained many public thieves and recovered their loot. Already, the citizens are being told that they should be patient because the so-called dividends of democracy can only be brought to them after the current government has cleared the unimaginable rot left by its predecessor.

Although the camp of the supporters of Buhari is thinning out having been disillusioned by his ineptness, the citizens who are not amenable to this delusion of waiting for good governance to manifest but insist on evident performance are easily branded as enemies of the positive change that is launching the country into prosperity.
And this is why our shock at the lack of direction and the gaudiness of the lifestyles of our leaders at a time there is so much suffering in the land is muted. The list of the manifestations of the hardship is endless: Workers and pensioners have not been paid salaries for months; those who can no longer endure are taking their own lives and children can no longer go to school .Those who are in school abroad who can no longer pay their fees because of the foreign exchange crisis have turned into thieves, prostitutes and beggars. But amidst this, the children of our leaders are schooling overseas. No wonder they do not care that teachers are not paid at home and schools are being shut down. Are these the people we expect to think about how they would improve our education?

How many children of Buhari are in the country’s public schools? Our public consciousness is often jarred by the reports of how our big men like Buhari have their children ensconced in some overseas universities. However, there is always the ludicrous argument that Buhari is using his money to send his children to school abroad. But this argument is rendered nugatory by the fact that as our leader, he must clearly demonstrate his confidence in our educational system by making his children to be part of it. Again, how did Buhari become suddenly rich that his children are now schooling abroad? Is this not the same Buhari who lamented that he was so poor that he could not pay for his party’s form indicating his interest in the presidency?

HealthWhat Is Exactly Is Meniere Disease? by ochukoccna(op): 2:34pm On Jun 04, 2016
Today, news broke that the PMB is suffering from Meniere Disease. But the question is what exactly is Meniere Disease? shocked shocked
Read and understand cool cool

Ménière's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that usually affects both hearing and balance. Characterized by episodes of vertigo along with fluctuating or permanent tinnitus and hearing loss,it affects people differently. It can range in intensity from being a mild annoyance to a disabling disease.

In most cases, Meniere's disease affects only one ear. Meniere's disease can occur at any age, but it usually starts between the ages of 20 and 50. The immediate cause of Ménière's disease is endolymphatic hydrops, an excess of fluid in the inner ear. The possible causes of endolymphatic hydrops, in turn, are not well understood. For this reason a causal treatment of endolymphatic hydrops – and thus also for Ménière's disease – does not exist. However, episodes of vertigo usually subside as the illness progresses or stabilizes, and most patients learn to manage tinnitus and hearing loss. This even applies to patients who are affected in both ears from some point in the course of their lives (ca. 30%).
It's considered a chronic condition, but various treatments can help relieve symptoms and minimize the long-term impact on your life.

Signs and symptoms of Meniere's disease include:

--Recurring episodes of vertigo. You have a spinning sensation that starts and stops spontaneously. Episodes of vertigo occur without warning and usually last 20 minutes to several hours, but not more than 24 hours. Severe vertigo can cause nausea and vomiting.
--Hearing loss. Hearing loss in Meniere's disease may come and go, particularly early on. Eventually, most people have some permanent hearing loss.
--Ringing in the ear (tinnitus). Tinnitus is the perception of a ringing, buzzing, roaring, whistling or hissing sound in your ear.
--Feeling of fullness in the ear. People with Meniere's disease often feel pressure in the affected ears (aural fullness) or on the side of their heads.

After an episode, signs and symptoms improve and might disappear entirely. Episodes can occur weeks to years apart.

PoliticsMrs Buhari’s Hustle by ochukoccna(op): 5:32pm On Apr 21, 2016
Last Thursday, the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, launched her book, Essentials of Beauty Therapy: A Complete Guide for Beauty Specialists, an event attended by the familiar gang of the All Progressives Congress big wigs: Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; his wife, Dolapo; senators and state governors; distinguished and ordinary politicians. Coincidentally, the launch date also dredged deeply ugly memories for some Nigerians – the people of Chibok whose daughters were abducted two years ago; Nigerians who still remember them and care, and the girls themselves who, wherever they are, probably no longer have a sense of how much time has passed.

Mrs Buhari should be criticised for her insensitivity, launching a book on the Chibok anniversary. The idea of celebrating something as vain as “beauty” seems frivolous when compared to the harrowing experience the 219 abducted young women must be going through.

The very day Mrs Buhari was gathering a crowd of Nigerians wealthy enough to be sheltered from the ugliness that characterises the Nigerian social landscape – no light, no fuel, no money, no jobs, no joy, no hope – the United States Congress addressed the issue of the missing Chibok girls, promising they would do all they could to bring them back. You would think it is their country’s personal tragedy. In a number of places in different parts of the world, schoolchildren, politicians, artistes, and ordinary folk sent words of solidarity to Nigeria, joining hands in global humanitarianism.

Here in Nigeria? The wife of the President launched a book on “beauty therapy” before a crowd whose lives were already too privileged to ever need her book.

Perhaps, to preempt and stave off criticism of the insensitivity of timing, Mrs Buhari attached the book launch to the Chibok girls, the schoolboys murdered at Bunu Yadi, and the Internally Displaced Persons in various camps. Judging from the media reports of the event, it seems highly likely that the Chibok, Bunu Yadi, and IDP angle came as an afterthought. For, if the rather glamorous event were about these people, the theme should have been built around them; their story should not have been tangential to her book project.

Otherwise, how come the police turned the #BringBackOurGirls campaigners and Chibok parents back from Aso Rock when they staged a peaceful demonstration on Thursday? Why should the #BBOG campaigners who have kept the issue in public memory be outside the villa at an event for Chibok girls on the anniversary of their abduction? Why were the #BBOG campaigners not invited to the book launch? Why were they not part of the planning for the event? Since the money raised was meant for Chibok girls, Bunu Yadi boys’ family, and the IDPs, how come Mrs Buhari has yet to disclose the amount to the public? In the interest of transparency, why did the guests not announce the amount they were donating? What did they have to hide? Where and when does Mrs Buhari begin to disburse the money?

All that I have said is, however, secondary to this one important fact: the book launch should never have held. The decision of a sitting First Lady to launch a book is unethical, immoral, and a blatant act of corruption. One would think that the people who got to office by campaigning against the corruption that has eaten us out of house and home would stay afloat in the cesspool of power; but no, they are already plunging in headlong,

Can Mrs Buhari and her handlers honestly claim they were not bothered by the ethics of a sitting First Lady launching a book? For their equally ethically challenged followers who have argued she did nothing wrong, can they tell us how Mrs Buhari’s launching a book around her area of career specialisation – beauty therapy – is different from her predecessor, Mrs Patience Jonathan, who similarly muscled her way to the apogee of her civil service job – becoming a Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service while sitting in Aso Rock?

When questioned, Mrs Jonathan said she had to take care of her career as she needed it to fall back on after their tenure expired. That manner of desperation in a First Lady would of course, result in a manoeuvring of public structures. She would indeed attain the height of her career but not because she worked her way through it. Mrs Buhari, in this case, is no different; promoting her deactivated career by writing a book to teach young people about beauty and fashion.

Mind you, this was not a hobby that preceded her husband’s tenure in office. There is no indication she was a prolific writer at some point and that she still writes because she cannot put her creative impulses on a leash. Instead, she merely showed she was another First Lady politician who cannot take the power and privilege of her office for granted. She has to bend power to accommodate her hustles. Like former President Olusegun Obasanjo who used the privilege of his position to harass a presidential library out of people, Mrs Buhari quickly gathers a crowd around herself to sell them a book they are not likely to read. She could not even wait a full year in office!

Mrs Buhari must of course know that all the people she could summon to that occasion, and all who wrapped their “agbada” around themselves to heed her call would not touch her with a pair of antiseptic gloves the very moment her husband is out of office. She, like other first ladies before her, must know these simple facts and that is why they take advantage of their office. She also probably knows that just like those who donated to Mrs Turai Yar’Adua’s N10bn cancer hospital no longer care about what became of that project once President Umaru Yar’Adua was out of power, nobody will enquire if the money raised at the book launch truly went to Chibok or the IDPs.

One only needed to take a look at the cross-section of guests – politicians, civil servants and some so-called captains of industry – and question which one of them needed a beauty book and why else they would have been present at that occasion other than mere eye service – to be seen by the Big Madam herself who can influence their lives and careers with the “Oga at the top”?

One also needed to listen to the VP’s speech at the occasion to understand that the whole event was a huge charade by sycophants. People who could not have dared to tell the First Lady hustling money out of their pockets that her action was just wrong.
One can count on them smiling through it all just so they can remain in her good graces.

Mrs Buhari further said she wanted the book used in vocational schools to teach beauty to young people. Well, if she can summon people to come launch it, how hard can it be to influence placing the book in the curriculum as a compulsory read so that thousands of people can keep paying into her pockets? The Kogi State Governor, Yahaha Bello, after all promised that state governors would make the book available in all the local governments across the country. Pray, with whose money?

In all these, one wonders what the position of Buhari, the fierce anti-corruption fighter and ethicist, is on his wife’s smash and grab. On the launch date, he was far away in China but I bet he could not have been ignorant about the whole activity. Was he in any way supportive or like Pontius Pilate, he found a way to wash his hands off the whole affair? Or, did he stare outside the windows of his hotel, looked across the Chinese landscape and quietly wondered if he was not another Prophet Eli – Israel’s moral guardian who could not even sort through his own family’s conduct?

•Given the cloud of wrongdoing over his head, the Senate President has no moral basis to continue as Nigeria’s top lawmaker

SENATE President, Bukola Saraki, pelted left and right by severe financial scandals, digs deeper and deeper into infamy. But what to do is to make an honourable exit — and the time is now.
By willy-nilly trying to stay afloat, Dr. Saraki and his senatorial gang have brought the highest legislative chamber in the land to hitherto unknown odium. That is evidenced in the silly on-going attempts to amend both the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) Law and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) of 2015. It is as if a band of criminals are holding the Senate captive; and would think nothing of subverting the law, just to save the fast sinking Saraki.
Amending the CCB Law would, in their skewed thinking, offer Saraki some rogue comfort and protection, since he is currently undergoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). But which serious legislature makes laws, in their own sole interest? Besides, on April 15, Saraki’s latest gambit to evade justice hit the rocks, with a court in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, talking him to go face trial at CCT.
As it is now, amending the CCB Law would appear an exercise in futility, since that would be amending the Constitution. Even if the senatorial gang succeeds in their plotting, they would still need two-thirds of state legislatures nationwide to endorse such an amendment. That, they are not likely to get.
The more dangerous gambit is amending the ACJA. To start with, it is incestuous for a band of senators to attempt to rig the law, to favour one of their own. That is a monumental betrayal of trust, which this polity must not tolerate. Again, by their skewed thinking, these senators figure amending ACJA would avail Saraki the opportunity to stall and stonewall, so that his CCT trial can last virtually forever, while he clings on to office in disgrace.
It is true: those the gods want to destroy they first make mad — and these misguided senators, by so brazenly attempting to skew the law, manifest nothing but arrant insanity. So, they must be brought to book before profaning, beyond measure, Nigeria’s highest legislative chamber.
Amending ACJA, to dubious ends, must not be allowed to happen. ACJA would appear one of the few good legacies of the Goodluck Jonathan Presidency. It is also on this all-important piece of legislation that the prosecution of public sector thieves, that have evaded justice for too long, is being anchored. Such rascality, if allowed, would spectacularly undo this fine reform of Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
But even in the unlikely case that the amendment comes on stream, President Muhammadu Buhari must veto it. That would be the most logical thing to do, given his administration’s war against corruption. Afterwards, the nation would have the opportunity to face-off rogue senators, who can muster the two-thirds majority vote to countermand the veto.
Preaching honour and nobility to Dr. Saraki, with his present intolerable level of desperation, would appear tantamount to yelling at the deaf. Yet, we would be damned if we sat back and allowed the Senate’s institutional integrity to be further rubbished, just because of a senate president notorious for a condemnable sense of entitlement.
The Senate is hollow without honour; and when its president luxuriates in infamy, and yet insists on keeping his job, then something has gone terribly wrong. It is true Saraki has not been found guilty of any crime. But when the head of the Senate is accused of fraudulent declaration of assets, and also named in the Panama Papers of allegedly buying a shell company off his wife for £3 million, while as Kwara State governor, his rotten personal morality is blighting the institutional grace of the Senate.
At this critical juncture, it ceases to be a matter of hollow legalism. There is a perception of muck and dirt, which does not sit well with the head of any legislature — and Dr. Saraki is not only the president of the Senate, but also chairman of the National Assembly. This heavy perception of muck casts a pall over the National Assembly. Therefore, Dr. Saraki should gracefully remove himself and help stop this monumental national embarrassment
.

To force Saraki out, crucial institutions of state must also speak out: the Presidency, the Council of State and every patriot that feels the Saraki disgrace. Even the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on whose platform Saraki sits, must disown him. Enough of this aberrant solidarity of saying nothing, while an individual and his gang undo the National Assembly!
Dr. Saraki must go. He has disgraced the National Assembly enough. The time to go is now!

Do you mind explaining your research on nanomaterials, sensors, devices and flexible technology?

Our research work is focused on two aspects of electronic technology; one aspect is making more energy efficient electronics so that everyday devices such as laptops, smart phones and mobile gadgets can last say a week on a charge rather than a day. The second aspect of our research is in making electronic products on plastic sheets. This will enable foldable, bendable and stretchable computers, phones and display devices that are much cheaper, environmentally-friendly and robust against all sort of common but expensive hazards such as drops. All of these benefits are due to the outstanding properties of plastics. For example, nanotechnology on plastics could lead to smartphones for N10,000 compared to N100,000 for current products. Another example is you can have a small plastic smartphone that you could unfold into a bigger tablet to watch videos.

In what ways will your latest discoveries transform lives in Africa?

These nanotechnologies we are researching can benefit everyone in every country. These are transcendental concepts that apply globally. It is of major interest in America and indeed that is why we have had substantial government and industry support to bring these ideas to life as prototypes.

In Nigeria and Africa, our latest discoveries have additional significance because of the cost and reliability advantages of plastic electronic products, which will make it more accessible to a broader range of the society. Furthermore, in the long term, it can reduce the cost of production that can lead to local manufacturing and jobs and also reduce waste processing and associated health risks owing to the more environmentally-recyclable nature of plastics.

I would also like you to share your experience as a young Nigerian in America and how your experience of the two environments shaped your career.

I have always been driven by ideas since I was a little boy growing up in Lagos. My father worked at major newspapers so I read a lot, and my mother worked at the ministry of education, hence, learning and schooling has always been important to us. I was very fortunate to attend FGC Ido-ani for my secondary education where I learned how to work hard, and to adapt to any situation all the while maintaining a jovial attitude in the spirit of the old saying, ‘there is always a reason to smile’. This proved invaluable when I moved to America for my undergraduate studies. Everything seemed relatively easier in the US and all my hard studies eventually paid off when with some good luck I got accepted for Ph.D. studies at Stanford University, one of the very best programs in the World. At Stanford, I learned to be an educator and a thinker that can turn abstract ideas into discoveries while working together with smart people from all walks of life. With God’s grace I managed to distinguish myself during my Ph.D. studies that led to a professorial job at the University of Texas-Austin, one of the top programs in the country, where I have been fortunate to work with outstanding students and researchers on nanotechnology. In brief, the hard-working habits I learned in FGC Ido-ani and the scientific skills I gained at Stanford University combined with some good fortune have allowed us to be quite successful in the very competitive American environment. My mother and father have been a limitless source of inspiration.

Can you also speak about your teaching experience at University of Texas at Austin and the kind of support you receive as a scholar in a white-dominated environment?

My experience at the University of Texas – Austin has been wonderful. it is an international institution with people from all over the World. Indeed, there is a famous African conference held every year here, chaired by Prof Toyin Falola, one of my esteemed colleagues at the University. What I have found is that a friendly attitude and strong intellectual merit will take you as far as you aspire at virtually all Universities in America.

Will you ever consider working in Africa or Nigeria?

I have a permanent interest for collaborative projects in Africa and Nigeria specifically. Since 2008, I have been exploring opportunities to contribute to technology and development.

Recently, specific opportunities have been identified with two institutions, one in Lagos and another in Ondo State. I am now planning an extended visit to help the projects along, which are focused on commodity technology for health and another on industrial nanomaterials. Similarly, I have a deep longing to collaborate with fellow educators in Nigeria on post-secondary learning, which is very important for future advancement because the seeds of today are the fruits of tomorrow. I welcome correspondence from interested parties in Nigeria.

"Perpetuation of evil
Any religion that permits sleeping with under aged children is not a religion after God's heart
I hate religion with passion because it is bondage
Jesus didn't come to start another religion, he came to start relationship with God

How can you see a 13 year old and your stick is jumping up and down?...You are crazy....You are mad...If there is any punishment that is standard....that is in Sharia....the real Sharia is to cut off that stick.....After all you cut off the man who has stolen...Cut off because he has stolen the childhood of another person...By the time you begin to cut off their stick....Every other person will learn....And they wouldn't do it to their own daughters....Perversion of the highest order...Sleeping with under age and saying that your religion doesn't forbid it...Well the human culture abhors it"

I doubt most of those who commented didn't watch the video grin grin

I quite agree with you on the potential aspect of this great country , but I disagree on education. The Nigerian government should invest heavily in education at all levels because education is the future of any nation. instead of subsidy on petroleum product that money should be invested in education and agriculture.
