Politics / 34 Judges Cited For Corruption In Ghana On Video by octus2008(m): 5:44pm On Sep 09, 2015
It may go down in history as the single most massive bribery scandal to hit Ghana’s Judiciary, as 180 officials of the Judicial Service have been caught on camera taking bribes and extorting money from litigants.
Thirty-four of the suspected culprits are said to be judges at the High, the Circuit and the District courts.
Some of the culprits have also been linked to sex scandals in a three-hour edited video emanating from a two-year investigation into corrupt practices in the Judicial Service.
Trending Information gathered by the Daily Graphic indicates that ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who conducted the investigations across the country, is under intense pressure not to air the video as planned.
Those against the airing of the video are of the view that it will embarrass and cripple the judicial system, while those in support hold the position that it would rather weed out the bad lots and serve as a deterrent to anyone who intends to engage in corrupt practices in the service.
Action
Anas has since petitioned the Judicial Service and is requesting the removal from office of the culprits, whose names are yet to be released.
The ace journalist and officials of the Judicial Service are tight-lipped over the issue, but snippets of information picked up by the Daily Graphic indicate that all the affected officials will be interdicted, while the Judicial Service conducts further investigations.
Tension
It has also emerged that there is immense tension at the service, following rumours that some judges, who sat on high- profile cases in the past, have been identified in the scandal.
Five of the judges are said to have fallen sick suddenly, with one suffering a mild stroke. Others are reported to be pleading with higher authorities to be permitted to resign in lieu of prosecution.
It is not clear whether or not the culprits will be prosecuted, but a highly placed source at the Judicial Service said: “We have received a copy of the petition and we are looking into the issue thoroughly. Ghanaians will be updated in due course.”
Corruption
The Judiciary is perceived to be one of the most corrupt institutions of state, and although a couple of judges and Judicial Service staff have either been interdicted or dismissed for wrongful acts, this new video explicitly captures judges and court clerks extorting money and receiving bribes.
A couple of lawyers, with whom the Daily Graphic spoke, said they had also gathered some information regarding the scandal.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, some of them said the situation was scandalous and expressed the hope that it would lead to the ridding of the judicial system of those who were corrupt.
Some members of the public are excited about the build-up to the airing of the video.
Social media is rife with information regarding the alleged scandal, but no names have been dropped yet.
Anas, in a recent media encounter, gave hint of the magnitude of his latest investigations.
Corruption in the judiciary
The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has for consecutive years cited the judiciary as one of the most corrupt institutions in Ghana.
The judiciary has also been on the corruption radar of the Instiute of Economic Affairs (IEA) and recently, the Judgement Debt Commission’s report also attributed the cause of some judgement debt against the state to the judiciary.

Sports / Premier League Stars Spend Fortune On Black Magic by octus2008(m): 2:36pm On Sep 09, 2015
SUPERSTITIOUS Premier League stars are handing over fortunes to witchdoctors in a bid to turn themselves into world beaters, a Sun investigation has found.

Top players are making 9,000-mile round trips to West Africa to visit Juju men with supposed supernatural powers. They are taught bizarre rituals said to boost their skills or break the curse of an injury.

Several top stars have been publicly linked to black magic. Tottenham’s Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor, 31, accused his family of using Juju on him during a feud. He suggested his mum used juju magic during a family feud.

Premier League star Emmanuel Adebayor claimed his mum used black magic to ruin his form in front of goal. But Kola, his brother in Germany who is a truck driver blasted his brother stating that he (Adebayor) was being ‘brainwashed’ by muslim alfas-spiritual men.

And Chelsea legend Didier Drogba told of his Ivory Coast team-mate Jean-Jaques Tizie chasing bad spirits away in a cemetery ritual in a book about African football.

But some footballers are in thrall to the tribesmen and are being rinsed of their earnings by fakers driving round in flash cars.

West Bromwich Albion’s former £10million record signing Brown Ideye warned last night: “I know players who get involved with the Juju men and they can’t get out. It’s a trap. They might get short-term benefits, but in the long run they pay for it. Juju men have a lot of influence.”

The wife of one Premier League ace told The Sun that her husband transfers £1,000 a month to a witchdoctor in Ivory Coast.

She said: “To some of the African players, the Juju man is more important than the manager of the club. If the Juju man told my husband to stop playing football, he would never kick a ball again.”

Our team tracked down a Juju man known as Marabout Degla in a remote town in Benin.

He claims to have worked with some of the world’s top players and be able to make them the “top scorer or best player in the team or the world”.

One ritual called the Troupkéka Milika costs around £460, but can be done remotely from his home in the “sacred forest” near the city of Parakou.

Marabout Degla said: “During its nine days you cannot sleep with a woman and you should cover yourself with a white loincloth while you sleep at night.”

He also offers “a magic ring that allows you to dominate playing partners and opponents during every competition you take part in”.

Marabout Degla said included in the ritual’s cost is protection against witchcraft and black magic.

But he added: “After becoming famous you must remember orphans, the disabled and work for the promotion of football in your country for it to work.”

The Sun also spoke at length to the wife of a Premier League player about his relationship with his Juju man.

“The Juju man might ask him to bring a sacrifice — a spotless white goat, lamb or chicken — which would be slaughtered and then various oaths are made.

“There are many fake witch doctors driving around in Range Rovers and living in mansions. But the genuine Juju man lives in a hut with no water or electricity.

“I don’t think the English players know too much about all this, but some managers are definitely aware because the players excuse themselves at the drop of a hat when the Juju man comes calling.”

Nigerian Ideye, who now plays for Greek side Olympiacos, also warned about fakers.

He said: “These are men who are just trying to make themselves rich and tell you they can make your life perfect.

“If things like that worked then instead of Messi and Ronaldo winning world player of the year it should be some African players.

“I would advise players not to follow this route but it’s their choice, I can’t stop them.”

The Sun can also reveal how a witch doctor threatened to curse an English team on the eve of a crucial European match if they did not pay him £50,000.

He had turned up at the team’s hotel, but the captain dismissed the claim despite the pleas from an African team-mate.

The team lost the game with both players making notable errors. A source said: “It was creepy stuff.”

In an apparent ‘The price of magic’ style, the ‘Troupkéka Milika’ Cost: £460 and the ritual can be done remotely but takes 9 days to work. The ‘Requirements’ are, ‘Provide your name’, ‘DOB’ and ‘Mother’s maiden name’, ‘Avoid sex for nine days’ and ‘Sleep under a loin cloth’.

The ‘Benefits’ are ‘You’ll become a top scorer or best player in team’.

For the ‘magic ring or headband’, cost is £350 and the ritual can be done remotely but takes 9 days to work. The ritual ring is blessed with magic powers.

‘Requirement’, ‘Wear it on your foot or head’ and ‘Benefits’, ‘You’ll dominate playing partners & your opponents during every competition you take part in. ‘Also offers protection from black magic and evil spirits’.

WITCHCRAFT is an epidemic blighting huge swathes of West, South and Central Africa.

More than half of the people south of the Sahara are believers and in many areas the cult’s grip is strengthening.

Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Zambia are among countries particularly affected.

Every year, tens of thousands are branded as witches.

Around 1,000 in the Gambia were accused of witchcraft in 2009 and made to drink potions by government-backed witch-doctors to “cure” them.

In Tanzania, where around 500 “witches” a year are killed, 23 people were charged last year with murder after burning alive seven villagers suspected of witchcraft.

Several countries have outlawed the cult.

Sports / Memphis Depay’s Ghanaian Father Calls Him A Liar by octus2008(m): 5:05pm On Sep 07, 2015
The Sun on Sunday have stitched up Manchester United star Memphis Depay by speaking to the footballer’s father for his understanding of why he has no relationship with his son.
The summer signing from PSV has his name “Memphis” displayed on the back of his football shirt, as the Dutch international refuses to have “Depay” due to his family politics.

Memphis Depay is known to be estranged from his father, however the Sun on Sunday have now made it their business to speak to the dad of the United star for his version of events..
According to Dennis Depay, Memphis has spread lies about his childhood. His crucial quotes are as follows:

“Saying that I didn’t see him after he was four is a lie. It is unbelievable, it is not nice. He is my son and I love him. I am the man who gave him his first ball.

“He was not abandoned by me. That is not true. I was always there for him.
I saw him on YouTube talking about his dad, saying he didn’t want to put my name on his back. It made me feel terrible.

Business / Re: Money Ritual Theory. Is The Money Involved Printed By CBN? by octus2008(m): 6:11pm On Sep 06, 2015
This is a piece i got from Ghana Papers on Money Rituals called SAKAWA

The Confession Of 3 Sakawa Boys We Want To Stop But….
I became interested in sakawa two years ago when I had nothing. No roof on my head, no food to eat and no pesewa in my account. But now I boast of $ 2 million in my account and a six-bedroom house at Kasoa in the Central Region. I’m pretty sure this is the kind of life every young man wants, but I will gladly give them up if there is a way out for me to be free again.
“Sometimes you get lucky to be instructed to just sleep with about 70 dark-skinned ladies in a month and collect their vagina fluid. But in worse scenarios, the task is inconceivable,” reveals a 34-year-old sakawa man.
While they drive in flashy vehicles and appear to enjoy life, the life of a sakawa boy, the Daily Graphic gathered, is one characterised by sorrow, pain and regrets.
For Abuda (not his real name), the pain and frustration of the sacrifice he had to perform once in five weeks had become “a permanent pain on his heart every day” because they were unimaginable.
He recalled that while eating at the Magbees Restaurant in Kasoa, two months ago, he was instructed by his spiritualist to sleep with his sister, but he refused and the consequence was that he had skin rashes all over his body for over two months.
With pain written all over his face, he took off his jacket, in which was hidden a foam soaked with fluids which came out from the sores on his back. His back was sored with multi-rashes dripping a whitish fluid — a penalty for disobeying the spiritualist.
To keep a normal body scent, he uses a strong-scented designer perfume –Juicy Couture.
Abuda’s odyssey in the world of sakawa and the demands on him that flowed effortlessly from his shaky lips were so horrifying that I declined the food and water he bought for me with the excuse that I was fasting.
Abuda is just one of the many young men who have expressed a strong desire to quit sakawa but are unable to do so because it will result in the loss of their lives.
As classic music played and the quiet restaurant began to get full with an accompanying chatter of cutlery, three of Abuda’s friends joined us. Firm handshakes were exchanged but the smiles were few around the table.
Samson and George (not their real names) shared harrowing tales, including initiation rites, that involved sacrificing two babies that were a day old.
“I want to stop. I want to give all I have away and just have my peace of mind. It is tough,” George said while sipping a chilled Smirnoff ice drink.
Among the three men, the desire to quit is high but unfortunately for them, they are in the same soup as Abuda; the exit appears shut.
Even scarier is the fact that many are losing their lives for failing in their obligations towards whichever deity they have sworn allegiance to.
So far, Abuda said, three of his friends had died for failing to perform the mandatory sacrifices.
Abuda’s initiation
Narrating how he joined sakawa, Abuda said he was introduced to it by a friend five years ago.
“He was my childhood friend at Swedru in the Central Region. Kudu, as I call him, has been into sakawa for more than eight years,” he said.
According to him, his friend was “wickedly rich” with more than $ 5 million in his account.

Abuda said Kudu had three houses located at Swedru, Takoradi and Tema in the Central, Western and Greater Accra regions respectively.
Apart from poverty that pushes many people into the occult realm, Abuda was charmed by his friend’s luxurious lifestyle.
According to him, at a time that most young people struggled to rent a single room, his friend’s four-bedroom house at Swedru had a swimming pool, a gym and a wine bar that most hotels in town would envy.
Abuda said he was initially introduced to that aspect of sakawa where the Internet was used to defraud people.
“After months of series of conversation with one of my Internet clients, I managed to defraud a Ukrainian woman of $ 2,000. I realised it was not enough to live the kind of life I wanted,” he said.
Abuda said he was officially introduced to the “real sakawa where voodooism is applied”.
“What I didn’t know was the sacrifices one had to perform every five weeks,” he said.
For him to be fully initiated, Abuda said he was made to sleep in a coffin at midnight for three weeks.
Aside that, he said he was also instructed to apply a liquid potion on his body every day for three months.
“Finally, I was instructed to sleep with four girls in a day and deliver their underwear to the spiritualist,” he said.
Asked what happened to those girls, Abuda said he wasn’t aware because “I was told not to ask questions”.
“I was also made to perform the ultimate sacrifice which I will not talk about,” he added.
Abuda said exactly four months after being initiated, he began making money.
Asked how he made $2 million, Abuda said after a sacrifice was performed, he received messages from his bankers of a substantial amount deposited into his account by unknown foreigners.
Hell on earth
Abuda said after performing the sacrifices for almost two years, he was tired because the “task keeps getting scary”.
“Today you will be instructed to do this and tomorrow you will be asked to do something unimaginable. It’s a hell on earth for me.”
Abuda said his friend who introduced him to sakawa fell ill after he failed to perform his January 2015 sacrifices.
“He has sores all over his body and a big boil in his anus. He is really suffering,” he said.
Asked what he intended to do to free himself, Abuda, who looked so confused and disturbed, said, “I do not know”.

Nairaland / General / America's Quietest Town Where Cell Phones Are Banned by octus2008(m): 4:50pm On Jul 29, 2015
Mountain Turnpike twists through dense oak, hickory and spruce trees and keeps winding, like a slithering snake, through the mountains that separate Virginia and West Virginia. But on a clear day, looking south from the Monongahela National Forest, what looks like a giant white Lego structure emerges from this sea of green.

And that's about when it starts. Your cell phone drops reception. Your radio spins, unable to pull up any stations. You can shake your phone all you want, but it won't help. If you're a city slicker accustomed to continuous connectivity, you might start to panic.

Keep driving and hook onto the Potomac Highlands Trail toward that magnificent structure. You eventually reach Green Bank, population 143, best known as The Quietest Town in America. Where cell phones and wireless devices are banned, their use potentially prosecutable by law.

Technology is constantly changing how we live and communicate. But in Green Bank, it is the presence of some of the most sophisticated technology on Earth that preserves this rural enclave, a throwback town to yesteryear.

About this series

Great American Stories is an occasional series on the unexpected places and unforgettable characters that help define the country.

This is where you come to get away from the United States. Here, instant connectivity is extinct. Even microwaves are frowned upon by the region's scientists.

It's not that people are backward or fearful of technology. Quite the opposite.

Tucked in the Allegheny Mountains, researchers are listening to exploding galaxies at the edge of the universe -- a signal that is so faint, it's about a billionth of a billionth of a millionth of a watt.

A cell phone emits about 3 watts and can swamp the sounds that are teaching astronomers how the Milky Way was formed and how it is still evolving. So, cell phone use is limited in the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000-square mile area that limits radio frequency in the eastern half of West Virginia and parts of Virginia, stretching to the Maryland border.

The quiet zone gets drastically more restrictive the closer you get to Green Bank, home to the world's largest steerable radio telescope, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

The main telescope weighs 17 million pounds, spans about 2 acres wide and stretches 485 feet into the air. Several smaller telescopes are sprinkled around it amid 2,700 acres of parkland. Leave your phone and digital camera behind.

The telescope can hear sounds from hundreds of millions of miles away and attracts some of the leading researchers in the world.

"What we have here is an amazing combination of a very rural atmosphere with extremely high technology," says Jay Lockman, the principal scientist of the Green Bank Telescope.

"If you want to hear quiet noises, you need to keep the noise down."

He laughs when quizzed about the lack of cell phone usage here. "For the last 5,000 years, human beings have managed to flourish without this," he says, "so to me it seems a little odd that people now find the absence of cell phones something worth discussing."

The 'Ghostbusters' surveillance truck

The white Dodge Ram pickup looks like something from "Ghostbusters." Giant omnidirectional antennas are attached to its roof, and its passenger seat has been replaced with a receiver, Doppler system and spectrum analyzer.

The truck listens for anything that can disrupt sounds from outer space. When it rumbles down the back roads of West Virginia, residents are known to unplug their microwaves so they don't get busted.

Today, as the truck lumbers, the spectrum analyzer senses a constant spewing stream of energy. "It's very, very prominent," says Jonah Bauserman, one of two men known as the "RFI police" with the observatory. RFI, or radio frequency interference, can come from many things: a cell phone, microwave oven, wireless device or arcing power line.

Bauserman cuts the truck across a field to a power pole along a fence line between a home and observatory property. He steps from the vehicle and pulls out a weird antenna-like device called a yagi stick and waves it like a magic wand.

And there's his answer. A cable line has been chewed by a varmint. Nearby are groundhog holes. "I'm pretty sure that's our culprit right there," Bauserman says.

Yes, a hungry groundhog may have just ruined an astronomer's search for water on the moon -- a study going on at the observatory at this exact moment.

Stories abound at the lab of other "RFI" problems over the years. Like the tale of the dog and his blanket. That was more than a decade ago, when scientists noticed a sporadic, intense signal coming from nearby.

It turned out to be a heating pad in a doghouse. When the dog got wet and slept on the blanket, the heating pad sent out bursts of energy that disrupted work at the observatory. The solution: Scientists bought a waterproof heating pad. "We're happy, the dog's happy."

Cute as those stories might be, this is no laughing matter. Imagine being a scientist who waits a lifetime to use the telescope -- only to have data lost because of a wet dog.

"At best, you weed through your data, trying to toss out the interfering signals," Lockman says. "At worst, it just kills your work completely."

Some people 'really freak out'

White picket fences adorn the yards of early 20th century homes in Green Bank, and a quaint business strip includes an arts center, antique shop and quilt and basket store. Like most small towns, Green Bank is anchored by a school, post office, Dollar General and barbershop. Its library was designated the nation's No. 1 rural library in 2003.

One gas station serves the town.

There are no stoplights. In fact, there are only three in all of Pocahontas County. An Oldsmobile-turned-GMC dealership is closed. The Church of God stands at the south of town.

Folks square dance here and bring gelatin salads with marshmallows to their socials. They have ham radios and landline phones. They do have the Internet, either with dial-up service or Ethernet cable.

A few confess to having Wi-Fi, a fact that annoys Bauserman and others at the telescope.

He points toward the main road and the homes with guilty parties using Wi-Fi. He tries to find an alternative to knocking on their doors, often making sure astronomers switch to different frequencies so their work won't be disrupted and residents can live their lives. He's never had to seek prosecution.

"We don't want to have a riot on our hands."

Beyond the residents who stray from the rules, arcing power lines and cut cable lines that are not capped are most problematic. Satellites beaming down and aircraft using radar can cause problems, too.

Within a mile of the telescope, only diesel vehicles are allowed because spark plugs could overwhelm the sounds from galaxies. Workers communicate using walkie-talkies on very specific frequencies.

There are about 25 to 30 homes on observatory property for employees. Anyone living there signs a waiver not to use microwaves or wireless devices.

More than a dozen high-end radio telescopes exist around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Japan, France and Sweden. The observatory here was founded in 1956, and its first telescope began operating in 1959. Astrophysicist Frank Drake soon used the telescope to search for extraterrestrial intelligence, the first time anyone used modern equipment to search for life beyond Earth. (He didn't hear anything.)

Power lines, radar, radio and spark plugs back then were the biggest source of interference. The area was chosen because of the small population in Pocahontas County and because the mountains provide a nice protective barrier from interference.

But that was long before today's wireless-reliant society. Policing the 25,000 tourists who visit the observatory every year can be a challenge.

"Some people when they come here really freak out because they can't have access to their little devices," Lockman says.

He and his family moved here two decades ago. He loves the combination of high-tech science and country living. In fact, he gets annoyed by folks when he travels beyond Green Bank.

"To tell you the truth," he says, "it seems pretty strange and annoying to see people always diddling with their devices and not paying attention to what's going on around them."

Many residents around Green Bank feel the same: like, what's wrong with the rest of America to be so attached to a phone?

Katherine Lafleur breaks down in tears outside her home over the country's love for their cell phones -- because devices meant to keep us in touch have made us out-of-touch.

"When they're in the restaurants, often you'll see two people having dinner together," she says, "but they're both on their cell phone."

"It's heartbreaking just to see mothers who are not paying attention to their beautiful children who are -- "

Her voice cracks, unable to speak further. "I'm sorry," she says.

Hanna Sizemore admits she was one of those addicted-to-her-device Americans. She grew up in Green Bank, went off to college and eventually landed a job with NASA in Silicon Valley while her husband worked at Google.

Not having a cell phone in the house now, she says, is part of the tradeoff of living here. "We're in a little bubble of the past here," she says. "The mandate to disconnect really helps you think carefully about interaction with technology."

She points to her backyard -- a gorgeous view of the Allegheny Mountains. "It's amazing," she says. "It's kind of a little oasis."

Harold Crist is 90 and taught many of the residents here in the 1950s when he was a teacher at the high school. He remains the regional sage.

Not having a cell phone in his house in neighboring Arbovale is no sweat off his back. He rigged electricity up to the old place around 1935. Try living in these parts during frigid winters with wood stoves and blankets, he says.

"I've been fortunate to go from the beginning of the automobile and the airplane to today," he says.

Crist admits living with some inconveniences because of the giant telescope. He once had the "RFI police" show up at his door. Turned out his electronic doorbell was interfering with the lab. They hauled his doorbell off, tinkered with it and returned it retrofitted to conform to lab rules.

Far from complaining about their circumstances, residents in these parts fear their secret will get out -- that vacation spots will pop up advertising this refuge from connectivity. They've already seen an influx of about a dozen "electrosensitives," people who believe electromagnetic frequencies are the source of their illnesses.

Folks here relish their place in history as America's quietest town, where researchers study galaxies, the ice sheets on Europa, and the complex molecules found in clouds between stars.

If there's life out there, they'll hear it first. They just won't be able to notify anyone by cell phone.

Religion / How To Escape Depression’s Pull by octus2008(m): 8:48am On Jul 07, 2015
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on.” – Exodus 14:15

“All God’s revelations are sealed to us until they are opened to us by obedience. Immediately you obey – a flash of light comes. Obey God in the thing He is at present showing you, and instantly the next thing is opened up. The tiniest fragment of obedience, and heaven opens up and the profoundest truths of God are yours straight away. God will never reveal more truth about Himself till you obey what you know already.” – Oswald Chambers

Depression can be so weighty that it has its own gravitational pull, and one that has found me more than once dead center on the couch watching some mind-numbing television show. (Interesting isn’t it that the word a-muse means to “not think”?)

The choice of just getting up and sweeping the floor or writing a note to someone has always propelled me from its grip with escape velocity born from the spark of sheer obedience. The maximum weight of a Boeing 747 is approximately 900,000 pounds, yet “thrust and lift” can take it above the very clouds that had shrouded the sun.

Elisabeth Elliot’s signature quote regarding the soul’s malaise, which she says and very crisply, “Do the next thing.” She goes on to say with the same forthrightness, “Maybe you will have to get out of bed, get up from your chair, go outdoors and walk, sing a song out loud, bake a pie for somebody, or mow the lawn as an offering of praise.” I remember talking to a woman who when she was a little girl lost her father in a sudden accident with looming foreclosure of her family home. She said the most comforting sound she has ever heard was that of her mother washing dishes. She was doing the “next thing,” the practical thing and that which dispelled the depressing notion that “life is always going to be this way.”

But it is not always moving forward. Sometimes there is need to move backward in uncovering secret or long cherished sins in our lives. In the Joshua 7, we read of Israel’s defeat at Ai, which fell hard on the heels of over confidence and pride. Joshua fell on his face with a litany of questions and complaints. What was God’s response? Was it, “Joshua, let’s talk about this” or “how does that make you feel”? No, it was a resolute, no non-nonsense “Get up!” There was sin in the camp that had to be dealt with before there could be deliverance.

So “doing the next thing” might mean getting right with someone you’ve wronged, making restitution on outstanding payments, putting away once for all that website or magazine which feeds a monstrous, lustful appetite, taking back a purchase of self indulgence whose only outcome was more debt – you will have your own list. I certainly have mine. But be assured, this principle alone can take you from a shrugging Atlas with the weight of the world on your shoulders to that of renewed vigor and reviving refreshment. “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” Acts 3:19-20

The choices we make to obey despite our feelings or to give in to the downward pull of a fallen world filled with fallen people – mean everything.

Here is a list of a few other practical things that will help get traction in your life if you are stuck in depression:

Start with your devotional life. God’s Word is the means of grace whereby He imparts His peace and contentment to the depths of your soul. And prayer. After Hannah poured her heart out before God we read, “And her face was no longer sad.” John Piper says, “One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the Last Day that prayerlessness was not for a lack of time.” Yes, you have time!

Join a gospel-centered church and get involved in the fellowship. (For the believer, there is no growth, or life, or possibility of change apart from the body of Christ.) Don’t wait for someone to ask you out for a visit. Ask them. Statistics show that people who have a friend to talk to over coffee often do much better than going to protracted and secular counseling.

Begin an exercise regime. (Make sure you start with a doctor’s approval.)

Write a note to a friend or someone who seems forgotten and alone. (Isaiah 58:7-cool

Listen to music that elevates the soul. (1 Samuel 16:23)

Get on a budget. Prayerfully save for a purchase instead of putting it on credit. Tithe. (Malachi 3:10)

Finish projects long put off. Simple but profoundly effective, like a woman with whom I was counseling for severe depression. One of her assignments was to tackle the mountains of ironing and to clean her house, both neglected for months. The decision to complete very elementary tasks uncloaked the fabrication that her life was “overwhelming.” She did “the next thing” and that momentum was her exodus to freedom.

Start a garden, make a gourmet meal, watch some re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show, go out with family or friends for some Rocky Road ice cream. And laugh. It’s good medicine.

Now, clear the runway!

Nairaland / General / Game Of Thrones: What Will Happen In Season 6? by octus2008(m): 3:42pm On Jun 23, 2015
This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season five, and for George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books plus predictions for season six .
Season five of Game of Thrones has come to an end and there's currently no sign of George RR Martin's next book, The Winds of Winter.
Given that the books and the TV series have now reached a roughly equivalent place in terms of story (in some areas, the show has even leapt ahead), it's anyone's guess as to what will happen next. But here are some of our favourite predictions for season six.
• GoT: Where sexual violence is good for women
• Olly is the most-hated character in television
• GoT breaks its own piracy record
Melisandre will bring Jon back from the dead
This has to happen, right? Actor Kit Harington may have categorically denied that he's returning to the show next season, but, to be frank, we simply don't believe him. (He does know nothing, after all.) Given all the mystery surrounding Jon's parentage – if you're curious, just google R + L =J – and all the hints about his future significance, we're pretty sure that some form of resurrection is in store. Furthermore, last October, it was rumoured that several Game of Thrones stars, including Harington, had signed contracts for a seventh series, and received a "significant pay rise".
Thanks to Beric Dondarrion, we've already seen that those who follow the Red God have the power to bring people back from the dead. After Stannis's downfall, it also looks as if Red Priestess Melisandre may have woken up to the fact that Jon, rather than Stannis, could be "Azor Ahai" (a mystical leader from the past, whom the prophecies say will be reborn to save Westeros).
If Stannis is dead – and it looks as if he almost certainly is – it could be interesting, and a little sad, to watch Melisandre make a final choice, and opt to bring Jon back rather than Stannis (the ultimate rejection of the man she has followed, encouraged and killed for over the past few years). Then again, judging by the fact that she'd already abandoned Stannis and returned to The Wall at the end of season five, it looks as if her mind may already be made up.

Other popular fan theories suggest that Jon could have learnt to make like his brother Bran and "warg", and that he may have transferred his consciousness into his Direwolf, Ghost, in the moments before he died. But there was certainly no sign of this in the season five finale.
Either way, we suspect that, if Harington is coming back, the programme-makers will be keeping him under wraps for most of season six, perhaps only showing the character towards the end of the season. Any filming involving Harington will also, presumably, have to be done with the utmost secrecy (quite a difficult task, considering the huge amount of scrutiny the Game of Thrones filming, cast and sets receive online).

Game of Thrones cast: their best film roles
Myrcella will be saved...but not for long
Thanks to the "Maggy the Frog prophecy" (received by Cersei when she was just a young girl, visiting the witch living on her father's lands), it's already pretty clear that Cersei's children probably aren't going to have long, happy lives. Cersei was told: "Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds," implying that she'll see all of her children crowned King or Queen, and that, after their coronations, all three of them will die.
The loathsome Joffrey has already kicked the bucket, and, last we saw of Myrcella, she'd received a deadly dose of Dornish poison. However, seeing as Myrcella hasn't yet been crowned, we reckon she'll escape this time round...only to end up being killed somewhere further down the line.
Also: sorry, Tommen-fans, but we definitely don't see Cersei's "nice son" making it to the end of season six.
Cersei will get her comeuppance (again)

We've already seen Cersei humiliated, and subjected to a horrific "walk of shame". But the end of season five, and the arrival of her strong, silent (possibly zombified) hero, suggested that, no matter what, she's going to keep fighting, for herself, and for her children. We therefore predict more wine-guzzling, more malevolence, and much less self-control: she might be a born schemer, but emotional stability was never her strong point.
If Cersei manages to get through her impending trial, she'll almost certainly end up becoming a liability and a danger, to those close to her, and to the stability of Westeros itself. Because of this, we think someone, eventually, is going to finish her off.
Intriguingly, in George RR Martin's books, there's a second part to the Maggie the Frog prophecy, not yet revealed in the show. It reads: "And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you."
The Valyrian word "valonqar" means "little brother", and, in Martin's books, Cersei is consumed with the idea that Tyrion will be the one responsible for her murder.
However, as Cersei's twin Jaime is technically the younger of the two (by minutes), there's also a good chance that the prophecy could be referring to him, and that he'll finally turn on his sister/lover. If the show is planning to go down the latter road, that's something we'd love to see.
Other fan theories circulating online (we didn't come up with these ourselves, sadly) even suggest that the prophecy instead means "a little brother", rather than "Cersei's younger brother". If this is true, then perhaps Rickon Stark (remember him?) could be the one to do the deed. Or even Cersei's son, Tommen?

Arya will become "no one"
In the season five finale, we saw Arya facing a choice: she can either cling on to her identity as Arya Stark of Winterfell, hellbent on crossing as many names as possible off her "kill list" – or she can completely relinquish her identity to become one of the Faceless Men.
We think she'll eventually go down the latter path, and that season six will see Arya become a nameless super-assassin ... But we also think that, at some point in the future of the show, she'll remember that she's a Stark at heart.
• Soften GoT’s cruelty and it wouldn’t be so moving
• How Twitter reacted to Thrones' most controversial season
Daenerys will get a Dothraki army...and the dragons will be twice the size
Last time we saw Daenerys, she was surrounded by a Dothraki Khalasar – very likely a hostile one. (Technically speaking, all Dothraki Khalasars could be considered hostile, to an extent.) But, while the Dothraki aren't too keen on the idea of female leaders, we reckon the sight of Drogon might just convince them otherwise. Could Daenerys end up convincing a Khalasar to follow her, join up with her army of Unsullied, and cross the narrow sea? We certainly hope so.
Excitingly, according to the show's VFX supervisor Joe Bauer, we'll also be seeing some considerably bigger dragons next season.
“The dragons will again be double in size, ” Bauer recently told Yahoo TV, when asked what viewers could expect from season six. “When the dragons were small, we had little foam rubber models of each dragon and we could carry them on and off of the set and it was no big deal. Last year, the best we could do was a head and this year it’s going to be a finger nail or something, I’m not really sure.”
The Wall will fall to the Walkers ... but Samwell Tarly will end up saving everyone

After the horrors of Hardhome (the eighth episode of season five), it became clear that the Night's King and the White Walkers were a pretty much unstoppable force. Dragonglass and Valyrian steel appear to be the only substances capable of causing the mysterious ice-creatures any damage...but both are in short supply.
With Jon gone (even if he does get resurrected, we reckon he'll be out of action for a while), we're pretty sure that the inevitable will happen, and that The Wall will fall to the Walkers, who will sweep southwards, spreading death and destruction across Westeros.
However, there may be hope yet. The last we saw of Sam, he was off to Oldtown, to study to become a maester. Once he's there, and inside the biggest library in the world, we think he'll uncover something of vital importance about the White Walkers. Perhaps it'll be a way to kill them ..or perhaps it'll be something to do with the identity of the Night's King himself. Either way, we reckon "Sam the Slayer" will be pulled back into the fray one way or another – and whatever he discovers might just be the key to saving Westeros.
• Night's King: the Game of Thrones villain's 6 best roles

The last we saw of Bran, at the end of season four, he was inside the underground home of the Children of the Forest, meeting the "Three Eyed Raven". We predict that season six will show Bran more in touch with his mystical, spiritual side then ever: perhaps, like the Raven (who, it turns out, wasn't a raven at all but a man), he'll have fused himself to the Weirwood roots, becoming some sort of super seer?
One piece of season six casting news suggests that Bran may gain the ability to look into the past, and that we'll consequently be seeing flashback scenes featuring Bran's father, Eddard, as a child.
According to a recent Vanity Fair article, a leaked casting call for the new season included a description of: "a clever boy who seems large for his age", a "12 year old boy with brown hair and blue eyes", who will need to use a Northern accent, and spar with a wooden sword", and a “7 year old boy with dark brown hair, a narrow face and green eyes," who will also need a Northern accent and the ability to use a wooden sword.
The article suggests – we think extremely plausibly – that the “trio of boys” may well be a young Ned Stark (actor Sean Bean, who played Ned in the first season, has green eyes), a young Robert Baratheon, and Ned’s brother Brandon. Alternatively, the "Robert" character may also be Benjen Stark.
As for Rickon, the smallest Stark, and his companion Osha, it's anyone's guess as to where they'll turn up. But we're pretty sure they'll eventually end up crossing paths with some of the other main characters from the show.
While Sansa is still with Littlefinger in Martin's books, in the show, she's just escaped Winterfell, along with Theon. Could they escape Northwards, and somehow find Rickon? And, if they do, will Sansa even recognise her brother? (It's been so long since he appeared on the show, we can't remember him that well ourselves).
And so will the Ironborn
Remember the rest of Theon Greyjoy's family - specifically, his father, Balon, and his sister, Yara?
Last time we saw Balon, he'd decided that, after being castrated by Ramsay, Theon wasn't going to be much use when it came to providing an heir, and effectively disowned his son . Yara was slightly kinder, and set out to rescue her brother. However, disgusted by the servile, frightened state that he'd been left in after being tortured by Ramsay, she ended up disowning him too, declaring that "Theon Greyjoy is dead". (When it comes to dysfunctional families , the Greyjoys are right up there with the Lannisters, Baratheons and Targaryens.)
We didn't see anything of the Greyjoys in season five – in fact, their storyline is one of the few areas where the TV series is actually lagging behind the books. Many fans assumed that the characters had simply been cut, but a recently leaked casting call has given Ironborn fans hope. Apparently, the programme-makers are, or were, on the lookout for a man in his 40s or 50s, to play "an infamous pirate who has terrorised seas all around the world", and who is "cunning, ruthless, with a touch of madness".
Fans of the books will recognise that this description fits a character named Euron Greyjoy (aka "the Crow's Eye"wink: Balon's brother and Theon's uncle.
Euron, in case you're wondering, is a ruthless, eyepatch-wearing pirate, whose ship, The Silence, is manned entirely by men who have had their tongues cut out.
BOOK SPOILERS BELOW
In Martin's books, Balon dies, and a traditional ceremony known as a called Kingsmoot is called, at which the Ironborn decide who their next ruler should be. Euron wins the Kingsmoot, after revealing that he is in possession of a legendary giant horn, which supposedly holds the ability to tame dragons. Later on, he sends another of his brothers, Victarion, on a quest to marry Daenerys Targaryen, and bring back her dragons.
Does the horn actually work? At this stage, nobody knows. It also remains unknown just how much of the Kingsmoot/dragon horn plot will make it into the show. However, if the Euron casting call was genuine, it looks as if at least part of this storyline could be playing out in season six.
What else do we know about season six?
• George RR Martin isn't penning an episode this time round. (Will he be finishing Winds of Winter instead? We certainly hope so.)
• It's expected to air next April, although this hasn't yet been confirmed.
• We'll be seeing some brand new locations, according to showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss
