Nairaland / General / History Of Thrones: The Children Of The Forest And The White Walkers by octus2008(m): 12:27pm On Jul 27, 2017
So the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers—from men—to fight men for them. We did not see that coming.

Before we get to the implications of that monster revelation though, why exactly did the children need protection in the first place? For those answers we need to go back to a time when there were no men in Westeros, during a time known as the Dawn Age.

“No one’s innocent really in this world, and there is just something really beautifully right about the idea that the great nemesis of mankind were created to protect the Children of the Forest from mankind.” – Showrunner David Benioff

The First Men came from Essos 12,000 years ago across a land bridge into what we now know as Dorne (the exact time is at best an estimate, seeing as how there are no records from then), but before their arrival it was the domain of the Children of the Forest and the giants, a world without cities or rulers where unicorns roamed the land. We don’t know where they came from or for how long they lived free of mankind (one child says “a thousand thousand” man years), but we know they worshiped unnamed gods of the earth, carved faces into sacred weirwood trees to honor them (and to see through), and used magic to fight (though they also used obsidian bows and daggers).
The children have always been both small in physical stature (the giants call them “little squirrel people,” or “woh dak nag gram” for those of you that speak the True Tongue) as well as population. Bran is told in A Dance with Dragons, “The gods gave us long lives but not great numbers, lest we overrun the world as deer will overrun a wood where there are no wolves to hunt them.” What they lack in size though they make up in wisdom of the earth, superior power of the senses, and beautiful singing voices.

When the First Men came they did not come peacefully, battling with the children for two thousand years. The men rode horses, wielding bronze swords with shields of leather; they formed towns and built holdfasts, chopping down the sacred weirwoods. Their superior numbers and advanced technology made it so they naturally had the upper hand.

…Though not enough of an edge to defeat them. The children used their magic to break the land mass that led the First Men into Dorne, to prevent any more from crossing over. They even tried to flood The Neck to prevent them from moving further north (they failed there—though they did create the bogs and swamps the crannogmen call home to this day).

Finally—following two thousand years of fighting and bloodshed—the children and the First Men signed The Pact on the Isle of Faces, a peace treaty that ended the war and the Dawn Age. The First Men would come to adopt the nameless gods of the children (now known as the old gods), and the two races had peace for four thousand years
This time period is known as the Age of Heroes, when the great castles of Westeros were built, legendary figures like Bran the Builder and Lann the Clever are said to have lived, and many notable families and kingdoms were formed.

It is also when The Long Night occurred, roughly 8,000 years ago (at which we already took a deeper look). The last hero, with help from the children, defeated the White Walkers (known as the Others in the books) at the Battle of the Dawn, pushing them back into the cold lands of the far north.

Something obviously doesn’t add up here, time-wise.

If the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers to help them fight against the First Men, why did the Long Night take place two thousand years after the two sides made peace? Did the children and their small population become fearful of being completely overrun by mankind, forming the White Walkers as an army that could defeat men for them, without the children having to technically break the treaty? They likely imagined they’d be able to control their new weapon, so once mankind was eliminated by a stronger, icier version of themselves, the children could feasibly do away with them and return to their lands with impunity.

white-walkers“White Walkers” by ESCUDERO

…Or, could it be that the White Walkers simply took that long to get their army together? While they can raise a giant army of the undead to fight with them (those zombie soldiers are called wights), actual White Walkers—the ones that can only be defeated by obsidian glass and Valyrian steel—are few and far between. It’s possible it took the first White Walkers thousands of years to form their army of White Walkers, during which time the children and First Men had made peace.

It’s also possible some children never accepted or trusted the peace, and did it on their own. Or that the peace was only so the children could buy time, after which they would resume their war.

Which is all to say: It’s not clear yet how the timeline fits together, but it is obvious that while the children did create a new creature with a surmountable vulnerability, they lost control over it at their own peril. (Sometimes Frankenstein loses control over his monster.) So when The Long Night came, the children were facing an even greater danger—an even stronger type of man—so they had no choice but to fight back against them with the First Men. Following the defeat of the White Walkers during The Long Night, the Children of the Forest promised the Night’s Watch 100 obsidian daggers annually. Which means they clearly knew their creatures were only defeated, not eliminated.

However, it’s also possible that the Children created the White Walkers not to defeat the First Men, but to have a weapon ready for the next men that came for them. For while they had made peace with the first invaders, the world was full of many more men, and the Children may have feared that next invasion. An invasion that did come, and pushed the Children from their home for good—the Andals

WHO ARE THE ANDALS, THEN?

The Andals, with their superior steel weapons, came to Westeros from across the Narrow Sea roughly 6,000 years ago, first landing in the Vale with the Seven-Pointed Star of their religion (the new gods). This next group of conquerors ultimately finished the Children off (as far as everyone knew), even though the First Men fought the Andals, too. (The First Men only managed to hold on to the North themselves, though most of the other six kingdoms are filled with families with the blood of both the Andals and the First Men.)

Note: Some maesters think the Andal invasion was 2-4 thousand years ago, not six. Exact dates aside, at the very least the Andal invasion marked the beginning of recorded history in Westeros.

The Children retreated far north of the wall—no longer considered a part of Westeros—eventually becoming nothing more than a legend to the men and women who lived there. So they weren’t wrong in believing that mankind was their enemy. The First Men waged war on them for two thousand years, and the Andals simply finished the takeover.
Wherever the story takes us next in the world of man, we know the big picture is now far more magical than all that. Mankind and its destructive ways forced the Children, in desperation, to turn towards something even worse, but something that is still, in many ways, mankind. For we have seen the enemy, and it is us. May the old gods and the new give men the strength to defeat its greatest foe.

Nairaland / General / History Of Thrones: Game Of Thrones’ Maesters Of Oldtown’s Citadel by octus2008(m): 11:36am On Jul 27, 2017
THE MAESTERS OF THE CITADEL

The maesters are in many ways like the brothers of the Night’s Watch. The “knights of the mind” give up their family names and titles, and (are supposed to) live celibate lives, all in a lifetime of service to the Seven Kingdoms. But while the brothers in black stand ready to fight as the realm’s swords in the darkness, the maesters role is to illuminate Westeros with wisdom. Theirs is a world of science, medicine, and knowledge–one that might not have room for magic and dragons.
Maesters train at the Citadel of Oldtown, a city which earned its name from being one of the oldest in Westeros (mankind eventually got more creative naming things). Beautiful Oldtown, the largest realm’s largest city (in size), with its cobbled streets and stone structures lies, in the south near the western coast in The Reach, not far from Dorne. It sits along the Sunset Sea, at the mouth of the Honeywine river, and has long been one of the most important and busiest ports in the the entire world. Such is why it is also Westeros’ richest city.

While no one knows its true origins, its founding is believed to go back millennia, at least 12,000 years to the Dawn Age when the First men arrived and warred with the Children of the Forest. The city eventually came to grow around the seat of House Hightower, one of the oldest and most prestigious families in Westeros. Their home at the center of Oldtown is known as Hightower (also named before man got creative), the tallest structure in Westeros. Standing higher than even the Wall, Hightower castle has a beacon at the top to work as a kind of lighthouse for ships entering the port.

The tower sits on an oily, black stone that is so old and mysterious that no one knows what it is or who built it, leading to wide-ranging theories that get to the questions of the origins of life in the world. Oldtown might predate the coming of the First Men, and much more.

One of the most important monuments of the city is the Starry Sept, the former seat for the High Septon of the Faith of the Seven. It was here where Aegon the Conqueror was crowned as king of the Seven Kingdoms by the High Septon himself, and where Aegon was then anointed in the faith. (Though House Targaryen refused to stop practicing incest, forbidden by the religion.) Though the faith’s headquarters moved to King’s Landing–to the now destroyed Sept of Baelor–it still plays an important role in Oldtown.

But an even older institution still makes its home there, at the Citadel where maesters train. Thought to be the single greatest center of knowledge in the world, with books and scrolls going back thousands of years, the Citadel is where maesters earn their chains. Each link forged of a different metal indicates a mastery of a field of study. Among the links that can be earned are silver for knowledge of medicine and healing, yellow gold for math and economics, and black iron for ravenry.
Among their many functions maesters are Westeros’ mailmen, responsible for the message-carrying ravens of the realm. Included are the white ravens, which announce the changing of the uneven seasons. Sam and Gilly saw the white ravens heading out to announce the coming of winter when the two arrived in Oldtown.

Once a student–which is apparently a really crappy position–has earned a link, they go from a novice to an acolyte, but they don’t graduate to maester until they have a chain they can wear around their neck. They never remove their chain, not even to sleep, so they can be reminded of their service to the realm.
There are four classifications within the order:

Maesters: Assigned to individual houses to advise the lords and ladies of the castle or keep, to whom they are supposed to remain loyal to without political affiliation. (This is why Maester Luwin advised Theon after he took Winterfell. Maester Luwin’s position was to the Lord of Winterfell, not the Starks.)
Archmaesters: Senior members who are thought to be the master of a particular field, earning them a mask, ring, and rod of that subject’s metal. Archmaesters also sit on the Conclave, the governing body of the Citadel.
Grand Maester: The Conclave also elects the Grand Maester, who advises the King and sits on the Small Council. (Even such an exalted position does not guarantee a maester will follow all of the order’s rules, as Grand Maester Pycelle often served House Lannister over the entire realm, in violation of his vows).
Seneschal: A randomly chosen archmaester responsible for governing the Citadel for a year–a job no one seems to want.

Despite their ubiquitous presence throughout Westeros, in some ways the maesters are a mysterious order. The Citadel is not open to women, and its enormous library contains books so rare the world considers them lost forever–if the rest of the world even knows they ever existed. In A Dance With Dragons, Lady Barbrey Dustin refers to maesters as “grey rats,” saying they can’t be trusted because they are a close knit order who know all of their lords and ladies’ darkest secrets. She is far from the only person who thinks the maesters are way more influential and powerful than they would like anyone to know.

And they might be as powerful as Lady Dustin fears, especially if they were the reason dragons died out in the first place, in what is referred to as the Grand Maester Conspiracy.
The maesters are men of knowledge and science, and while the world was full of magic for almost the entirety of the orders existence, it largely disappeared with the death of the last dragons 150 years before Daenerys hatched three of them. While some believe that dragons died out because House Targaryen started locking them up in the Dragon Pit of King’s Landing, stunting their growth until they became as small as cats, at least one character in the novels thinks the maesters brought about the end of the creatures in secret. And his opinion carries extra weight since he is isn’t just a member of the order, he is the archmaester of magic and the occult.

Known as Marywn the Mage, he believes the maesters may have killed off the dragons covertly. Why? The maesters are opposed to magic, and dragons are thought to be directly tied to the presence of magic in the world (it has seemed to come alive again with the birth of Daenerys’ three). Magic is unpredictable, and it robs the maesters and their learned knowledge of power. As men who put their faith in science and tested wisdom, even the study of it is taboo, with only one in a hundred earning a Valyrian steel link for mastery of magic.

The order might very well have decided there was no place for dragons in the world because there was no place for magic, especially when magic challenged their position.

With apparently only one maester, Jim Broadbent’s way too relaxed archmaester Ebrose, believing Sam that the White Walkers have returned, the living’s greatest possible weapon against the army of the dead (dragons) might have something to fear in the Seven Kingdom’s “smartest” servants.

Their loathing of magic might explain why they are so protective of those books Sam wants to read. The older the book, the more they would reveal about a world of magic the maesters wish to keep hidden.

The Citadel contains many secrets that Sam could uncover to help save mankind. But both he and dragons could be undone by Oldtown’s greatest secret: the maesters are far more powerful than anyone realizes, and their hatred of magic and dragons could doom the world to darkness.

But what do you think? Are the maesters allies to the living, or a secret danger who could doom all of mankind. We’ve lit a glass candle in the comments below to help guide you there to share your thoughts.

Nairaland / General / History Of Thrones: Dragonstone, Birthplace Of A Dynasty And Home Of Dragonglass by octus2008(m): 11:16am On Jul 27, 2017
King’s Landing might be where Aegon first landed in mainland Westeros, but his conquest of the Seven Kingdoms was launched from the island in Blackwater Bay known as Dragonstone. And while the old seat of House Targaryen suddenly looks ready to once again be the foundation of a dynasty, the White Walkers have long been preparing to turn the realms of men into an empire of the dead. That’s why what lies beneath Dragonstone castle might matter far more than who rules above it.
Roughly two hundred years before their empire was destroyed during the Doom of Valyria (326 years before Aegon’s Conquest), the Valyrian Freehold made the volcanic island their westernmost outpost. Using magic that allowed them to turn stone into liquid, they created the ornate Dragonstone castle (which shares its name with the island). Designed in the shape of dragons and decorated with even more throughout, it sits on the face of the active volcano Dragonmont, which itself gave rise to the island.

Stormy, wet Dragonstone, which smells like sulfur thanks to Dragonmont, is a tough place to live, but despite its rocky terrain it does contain small villages made up of fishermen and some farmers. Its most famous residents though, the Targaryen dragonlords of Valyria, didn’t move there until 200 years after it was originally settled.
The Targaryens were a minor family among the Valyrian dragonlords, but when Daenys Targaryen told her father Lord Aenar that she had a dream foretelling the coming Doom, he moved the entire family to Dragonstone. The other 39 dragonlords thought they were cowards, but Targaryens had a history of prophetic dreams, and Daenys was right. Twelve years later the Doom of Valyria happened, and the Targaryens were all that remained of the once massive empire.

They had five dragons with them when they arrived at Dragonstone, but only one survived—the legendary Balerion. For over a century the Targaryens lived among the Seven Kingdoms, but they were not part of it, nor would it seem they were considered much of a threat to the kings of Westeros.
Eventually though they hatched two dragon eggs, Vhagar and Meraxes, and when they grew big enough the current Lord of Dragonstone, Aegon, and his two sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, turned their sights on west. They flew down the Blackwater, arriving in what is now King’s Landing.

After a swift conquest that saw most houses bend the knee rather than be destroyed, Aegon was crowned King of Westeros (though he failed to conquer Dorne, which didn’t officially become part of the Seven Kingdoms until marriages between Houses Targaryen and Martell in 187 AC). Despite ruling from King’s Landing (the Aegonfort preceded the Red Keep), Dragonstone remained the ancestral seat of House Targaryen. The castle would come to fall to the heir to the throne, with the “Prince of Dragonstone” becoming a formal title.
For nearly 300 years the Targaryens ruled Westeros, even after the last dragons died out in 153 AC. But when Robert Baratheon killed Rhaegar Targaryen, and Jaime Lannister put his sword through the Mad King’s back, the dynasty ended. King Robert bestowed Dragonstone to his brother Stannis.

Dragonstone castle is where Stannis both retreated and planned his many futile attacks to take the Iron Throne, over the giant wood carved table of Westeros that Aegon the Conqueror had built. But now on Game of Thrones with Stannis dead and Daenerys having reclaimed her family’s seat, the place where she was born (her epithet Stormborn refers to the terrible storm that took place during her birth on Dragonstone), the focus isn’t on the castle and who rules it. That’s because something far more valuable than a castle can be found there: dragonglass.
Samwell Tarly learned firsthand that dragonglass can kill a White Walker, but the cache of it he found at the Fist of the First Men was lost during the attack at Hardhome. Even prior to going to the Citadel he was looking for anything written about dragonglass, a search he mentioned to Stannis at Castle Black. Stannis told him, “We have it in Dragonstone.”

What he didn’t tell Sam though is they have a lot if it there, under Dragonmont. Tunnels and tunnels of huge deposits of it can be found in boulders and in the walls below Dragonstone. So much so that even though most of it black there is even some red and purple dragonglass.

This is seemingly what Sam found in that book he stole from the Citadel, the one that had the map of Dragonstone with a black spot.
He called it a mountain, but it looks more like an opening, one that is south of the castle. It’s a map that looks very much like this shot of Daenerys arriving at Dragonstone. The location of the castle to the opening of this tunnel is like what Sam saw in that book.
Despite uniting the Seven Kingdoms with a nearly 300-year dynasty, House Targaryen is a relative newcomer to Westeros, where many great houses go back thousands of years. They have no relation to the First Men who fought alongside the Children of the Forest, with their dragonglass weapons, during the Long Night. It’s unlikely the Targaryens ever fully appreciated how priceless their abundant black obsidian was.

So while Dragonstone was the birthplace of a conqueror, and is ready to help launch another one three centuries later, it’s what’s in Dragonstone’s tunnels below that might prove of far more interest to the Seven Kingdoms.

That is as long as the question of who rules Dragonstone castle doesn’t prove more important to the living than who is mining its dragonglass.

What secrets do you think Dragonstone contains? Will the wars of the living prevent them from finding the weapons they need to defeat the dead? Mine our comments section below with your thoughts.

Romance / Love Machine Sexual Assault: Victim Enjoyed Insertion - Doctor by octus2008(m): 5:39pm On Oct 05, 2016
A physician assistant has indicated that Janet Amankwah, the lady accusing one Queenie Akuffo of sexually assaulting her with a vibrator, ‘appreciated the act.’

According to Mary Mills, the physician assistant at the Ga South Municipal Hospital in Accra, 22-year-old Janet said that the accused reportedly inserted a Love Machine into her (Janet’s) vagina.

In the view of the doctor, the lady who narrated what Queenie had done to her was normal when she was brought to the hospital.

Mary Mills said in an answer to a question that she would agree with Andrew Vortia, lawyer for Queenie, that the victim appreciated what happened to her.

Ms. Mills further stated in a court presided over by Mrs. Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku during cross-examination yesterday that Janet Amankwah was also not drunk when she visited the health facility.

The defence lawyers are currently seeking to convince the court that the act perpetrated by Queenie was purely consensual.

Meanwhile, state prosecutors led by Detective Inspector Judith B. Asante, claimed they were set to present eight witnesses in the course of the trial.

This followed the discharge of Ms. Mills who had over the weeks been in the dock under cross-examination by Mr Vortia.

Sitting continues on October 13, 2016.

Queenie, 26, allegedly committed the act at about 6pm on January 25, this year at Ablekuma in Accra, where both of them reside.

According to the prosecution, Queenie asked other witnesses around to leave and she locked her bedroom, but a 13-year-old witness reportedly went to peep through the window of the accused person and saw her (Queenie) inserting the artificial male organ into the victim’s private part.

The victim’s brother, one Nana Sasu, was said to have seen the act and alerted her mother (the complainant).

They rushed to the aid of Janet and saw her lying naked in Queenie’s bedroom with vomit all over her body.

The artificial organ was found on top of Queenie’s wardrobe while a video recording of the act was also found on her Infinix mobile phone.

Queenie, according to the prosecution, in her caution statement to the police, admitted the offence.
