Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (/æˈkʊfoʊ ɑːdˈoʊ/ (About this sound listen) a-KUU-foh ad-OH; born William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo;[1] 29 March 1944) is the President of Ghana, in office since January 2017.[2] He previously served as Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007.[3] Akufo-Addo first ran for President in 2008 and again in 2012, both times as the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but was defeated on both occasions by NDC candidates: John Atta Mills in 2008 and John Dramani Mahama in 2012.[4] He was chosen as the NPP's candidate for a third time in the 2016 elections and defeated Mahama in the first round (winning 53.85% of the votes) which was an unprecedented defeat and the first time in the history of Ghana Early life and education[edit] Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was born in Accra, Ghana, to a prominent Ghanaian royal and political family as the son of Edward and Adeline Akuffo-Addo.[6] His father Edward Akufo-Addo from Akropong-Akuapem was Ghana's third Chief Justice from 1966 to 1970, Chairman of the 1967–68 Constitutional Commission and the non-executive President of Ghana from 1970 till 1972.[6] Akufo-Addo's maternal grandfather was Nana Sir Ofori Atta, King of Akyem Abuakwa, who was a member of the Executive Council of the Governor of the Gold Coast before Ghana's independence.[6] He is a nephew of Kofi Asante Ofori-Atta and William Ofori Atta. His great-uncle was J. B. Danquah, another member of The Big Six.[7] He started his primary education at the Government Boys School, Adabraka, and later at the Rowe Road School (now Kinbu), both in Accra Central. He went to England to study for his O-Level and A-Level examinations at Lancing College, Sussex, where he was nicknamed 'Billy'.[1] He began the Philosophy, Politics and Economics course at New College, Oxford in 1962, but left soon afterwards.[8] He returned to Ghana in 1962 to teach at Accra Academy , before going to read Economics at the University of Ghana, Legon, in 1964, earning a BSc(Econ) degree in 1967. He subsequently joined Inner Temple and trained as a lawyer under the apprenticeship system known as the Inns of court, where no formal law degree was required.[9] He was called to the English Bar (Middle Temple) in July 1971. He was called to the Ghanaian bar in July 1975.[10] Akufo-Addo worked with the Paris office of the U.S. law firm Coudert Brothers. In 1979, he co-founded the law firm Prempeh and Co. Political life[edit] Akufo-Addo's participation in politics began in the late 1970s when he joined the People's Movement for Freedom and Justice,[11] an organization formed to oppose the General Acheampong-led Supreme Military Council's Union Government proposals.[12] In May 1995, he was among a broad group of elites who formed Alliance for Change, an alliance that organized demonstrations against neo-liberal policies such as the introduction of Value Added Tax and human rights violations of the Rawlings presidency.[13] The broad-based opposition alliance later collapsed as the elite leaders jostled for leadership positions.[10] In the 1990s, he formed a civil rights organization called Ghana's Committee on Human and People's Rights.[11] Presidential bids[edit] In October 1998, Akufo-Addo competed for the presidential candidacy of the NPP[10] and lost to John Kufuor, who subsequently won the December 2000 presidential election and assumed office as President of Ghana in January 2001. Akufo-Addo was the chief campaigner for Kufuor in the 2000 election. He became the first Attorney General and Minister for Justice of the Kufuor era, and later moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).[14][15] In 2007, he was the popular candidate tipped to win NPP's presidential primaries.[16] In 2008, Akufo-Addo represented NPP in a closely contested election against John Atta Mills of NDC.[17] In the first round of voting, Akufo-Addo tallied 49.13%, leading Atta Mills with a slim margin that was below the constitutional threshold of 50% to become the outright winner.[18] Akufo-Addo ran again as NPP's presidential candidate in the 2012 national elections against NDC's John Mahama, successor to the late Atta Mills. Mahama was declared the winner of the election, an outcome that was legally challenged by Akufo-Addo. The court case generated considerable controversy, and was finally decided by the Ghana Supreme Court in a narrow 5/4 decision in favour of Mahama. Akufo-Addo accepted the verdict in the interest of economic stability and international goodwill.[6] In March 2014, Akufo-Addo announced his decision to seek his party’s nomination for the third time ahead of the 2016 election. In the NPP primary conducted in October 2014, he was declared victor with 94.35% of the votes.[19] Akufo-Addo also served as Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Mission for the South African elections in 2014.[20][21] He focused his campaign on the economy, promising to stabilize the country's foreign exchange rate and to reduce unemployment levels.[22] On 9 December 2016, sitting president Mahama conceded defeat to Akufo-Addo.[23] Akufo-Addo won the election with 53.83% of the votes against Mahama's 44.4%.[24] President of Ghana[edit] Akufo-Addo took office on 7 January 2017. His inauguration was held at Black Star Square in Accra. Twelve presidents from African and European countries attended the ceremony, including Edgar Lungu of Zambia, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria.[25][26][27] Akufo-Addo faced global backlash, especially on social media, for plagiarizing parts of his inauguration speech, having lifted passages, word-for-word, from previous inaugural addresses given by American presidents John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush as well as prepared remarks given by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at a 2015 United States Institute of Peace event.[28][29][30][31][32][33] After the scandal came to light, his press office issued an apology, with his communication director describing the situation as a "complete oversight and never deliberate."[34][35][36] However, after the mea culpa, it was found that Akufo-Addo had also plagiarized portions of his 2013 concession speech after the Supreme Court of Ghana upheld the 2012 electoral victory of President John Mahama. In that speech, lines were lifted verbatim from United States Vice President Al Gore's 2000 presidential concession speech given after the US Supreme Court verdict.[37][38][39] In September 2017, the president launched the Free High School Education (SHS) policy, which will make secondary high school free for students in Ghana. The president states it is a "necessary investment in the nation's future workforce" and will help parents whom are unable to pay for their children's education due to financial hardships. The program met with positive reaction from the nation, parents and students were excited and fervent, however, private schools opposed to the program state it will decrease the number of students enrolling in their system.[40][41] Personal life[edit] Akufo-Addo is from Akropong-Akuapem and Kyebi in the Eastern Region. He is married to Rebecca Akufo-Addo (née Griffiths-Randolph), the daughter of judge, Jacob Hackenburg Griffiths-Randolph, the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana during the Third Republic.[42][43] They have five daughters.[44][45] He was previously married to Mrs. Remi Nana Akufo-Addo, the daughter of Chief Remi Fani-Kayode of Nigeria. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nana_Akufo-Addo |

Nairaland / General / UK Appoints ‘minister For Loneliness’ by octus2008(m): 2:02pm On Jan 17, 2018 |
Britain appointed a “Minister for Loneliness” on Wednesday to tackle what Prime Minister Theresa May described as “the sad reality of modern life” affecting millions of people. Tracey Crouch, a junior Minister for Sport and Civil Society, will take on the role as part of a broader strategy to combat loneliness in Britain. “For far too many people, loneliness is the sad reality of modern life,” May said. “I want to confront this challenge for our society and for all of us to take action to address the loneliness endured by the elderly, by carers, by those who have lost loved ones — people who have no one to talk to or share their thoughts and experiences with,” the prime minister added. According to AFP as quoted by Channels tv, more than nine million people say they are always or often lonely, out of a population of 65.6 million, according to the British Red Cross. The charity described loneliness and isolation as a “hidden epidemic” affecting people across all ages at various moments in their life, such as retirement, bereavement or separation. The ministerial appointment follows a recommendation from a committee in memory of Jo Cox, a lawmaker for the opposition Labour party who was murdered by a far-right extremist. “Jo experienced and witnessed loneliness throughout her life especially as a new student at Cambridge University and separated from her sister Kim for (the) first time,” the Jo Cox Foundation wrote on Twitter. “She would be delighted by Tracey Crouch’s new job as minister for loneliness and would be saying ‘let’s get to work!’” the Foundation added. The prime minister was to host a reception on Wednesday to celebrate the legacy left by Cox, whose killing just days ahead of the 2016 Brexit referendum shocked the nation. Britain’s loneliness initiative will see a strategy published later this year, with input from national and local government, public services, the voluntary sector and businesses. |

Nairaland / General / Herdsmen Menace Ghana: Euphoria Grips Agogo As Police-military Team Arrive by octus2008(m): 11:22am On Jan 15, 2018 |
Residents of Agogo are ecstatic over the deployment of a combined team of police and military force to flush out nomadic herdsmen and their cattle from the area. Many people lined up on the streets out of joy to cheer the security personnel on as they arrive in the town. The deployment follows a Joy News Hotline documentary “Violent Shepherds", a seven-month investigative piece which highlighted what has become a national security issue. From Agogo in Ashanti, Kwahu East in Eastern, Kintampo and Berekum in Bono Ahafo Ashanti, Eastern and Bono Ahafo Regions farmers and other residents have endured pain. Loss of lives, sexual abuse, and destruction of crops are among the ordeal visited on local farmers by nomadic herdsmen. The arrival of the police-military team in Agogo means relief, especially, for farmers who had been restrained from going to farm following a gun attack on the Operation Cowleg team. Three military officers and a policeman were ambushed by armed herdsmen while the sought to respond to a distress call from a woman whose farm was being destroyed. The operations of the 248 personnel will cover land and air surveillance, aided by three Ghana Air Force helicopters. Residents, some of whom were seeing a helicopter for the first time, besieged the Agogo State College airfield to catch a glimpse of the team. Take-off by one of the aircraft saw a chaotic scene as clouds of dust covered the atmosphere. It, however, did little to scare the excited crowd which was anxious to see what was next as residents line up by the roadside to cheer the team in ecstasy. Residents of Agogo have every reason to be happy. Clashes since 2011 have plunged the area into insecurity. Many of them have lost their livelihoods as a result. Krontihene of Agogo, Nana Kwame Nti is among the elated residents. "We are experiencing something new. There's a helicopter monitoring the movement of herdsmen and their cattle. The herdsmen know their days are numbered. Indeed this government is our saviour," he said in ecstasy. He continued, "The support we are enjoying today is unprecedented. I can rest peacefully if f I die today because there is peace in Agogo." Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, is hopeful the exercise would be a one-stop attempt to push-out herdsmen from Agogo land. "We have seen operations in the past and there appears to be a trend of every year we celebrate an anniversary of the previous. I want to believe that this is the finality of all such anniversaries." There are, however, concerns about the sustainability of the exercise to bring lasting relief to people of Agogo. The District Chief Executive, who also chairs the District Security Committee, Francis Oti-Boateng, however, says the exercise will be sustained. "The men [police-military team] are going to be here as long as the Fulanis are also here. So until they leave, we are not going to allow them to operate on our land. "I can assure you in two weeks, you will see no cattle or Fulani man on our land," he assured. https://www.myjoyonline.com/news/2018/January-15th/herdsmen-menace-euphoria-grips-agogo-as-police-military-team-arrive.php |

Nairaland / General / FULANI HERDSMEN ATTACKS SOLDIERS IN GHANA by octus2008(m): 10:48am On Jan 09, 2018 |
The three military officers who were injured in the attack on police-military team in Asante Akyem Agogo by Fulani herdsmen has been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). The three were part of a combined police-military team that was attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the Asante North town. The incident occurred Monday afternoon when the military men stormed an area where the nomads were feeding their cattle. It comes as a deadline for the nomads to evacuate their cattle expires. Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah reported on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Tuesday that the military men were transferred to KATH after they were initially admitted at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital. They were transferred after their conditions were stabilized by nurses at the facility. According to him, residents of the town are expecting that this attack will bring to an end the Fulani menace in the area. “I have seen people standing at vantage points in the town and all they discuss is the shooting of the military man and the police…they expect that this would bring to an end the menace…,” he said. http://www.adomonline.com/ghana-news/military-men-shot-agogo-fulani-herdsmen-transferred-kath/ |

Nairaland / General / Did You Know That The NSA Uses Uber Drivers And Soccer Moms To Spy On You by octus2008(m): 4:31pm On Dec 15, 2017 |
In the United States there are thousands of otherwise normal citizens with camera equipped cars driving the streets spying on your every move. Each day your car’s license plate is often scanned more than a dozen times, in several locations, by several different scanners from several different companies. The most common scanners are deployed on private vehicles and are capable of scanning 1,800 plates per minute. This data from these scans is uploaded to several different national license plate databases and sold to banks and law enforcement organizations — including the NSA. While I was writing my post on how the NSA identified Satoshi Nakamoto, my source at the DHS described how the NSA subscribes to these private sources of license plate data to determine where you’ve been and where you’re going. Over the years the number of companies like DNR and the number of mobile scanners and solutions like PlateSmart has exploded. Graphic describing DNR’s business model. Almost every local, regional, or national repo firm has made license-plate scanners standard equipment employing thousands of people to literally vacuum data for national databases. There are about a 250,000,000 cars in the United States and most are scanned more than a dozen times a day. In turn the NSA subscribes to EACH of these national databases so they have a global view of where every American has been and where they are going. By plugging this data into tools built with an open-source software library for machine intelligence called TensorFlow the NSA is able to determine a driver’s home address, office, gym, and favorite bar. Then still other proprietary tools created by NSA contractors are able to process this data to predict, with high confidence, where you’ll be at any given hour of any given day. This mass data collection and surveillance of American citizens is being accomplished legally by normal everyday citizens working for private companies — not some shadowy governmental organization like the NSA. While some of these companies rely on contractor networks others simply employ drivers from Uber as well as soccer moms like Lori Jones who works for Relentless sucking up license plate data in her Honda Fit. Lori’s car is outfitted with a 50MM lens that can capture plates 60 feet away allowing her to automatically collect half a million plates each month while she drives her kids to soccer and karate practice. There are no more secrets… https://medium.com/@amuse/did-you-know-that-the-nsa-uses-uber-drivers-and-soccer-moms-to-spy-on-you-d912fe74befd

Nairaland / General / Rwanda Offers Refuge To Enslaved Libya Migrants by octus2008(m): 1:16pm On Nov 29, 2017 |
Rwanda has offered to give refuge to around 30,000 African migrants stuck in Libya often in enslaved conditions. It comes in the wake of a video, released by CNN last week, showing men being auctioned off as farm workers. "Given our own history... we cannot remain silent when human beings are being mistreated and auctioned off like cattle," the foreign ministry said. Hundreds of thousands of Africans travel through Libya every year as they try to make their way to Europe. They are often held by smugglers and forced to work for little or no money. During Rwanda's 1994 genocide, some 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutu were massacred in 100 days while most countries did little to help. Africa Live: More on this and other stories Migrant detention 'hell' "Rwanda, like the rest of the world, was horrified by the images of the tragedy currently unfolding in Libya, where African men, women and children who were on the road to exile, have been held and turned into slaves," the foreign ministry statement said. Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said Rwanda was a small country but it would find space. She told the pro-government New Times newspaper that Rwanda was in talks with African Union (AU) Commission to determine how to intervene and resettle them. "What I expect and know is that Rwandans will welcome these people. As Rwandans we are sensitive to people who are helpless and have no way of protecting themselves. It is something that is deep in ourselves, we take pride in human beings," the paper quotes her as saying. The minister also said negotiations were also continuing with Israel about accommodating African migrants seeking asylum there. Last week, the AU expressed outrage after the footage emerged appearing to show slave markets in Libya. Youths from Niger and other sub-Saharan countries were seen being sold to buyers for about $400 (£300) at undisclosed locations in Libya. In April, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said it had gathered evidence of slavery in Libya. Smugglers hold migrants for ransom and if their families could not pay, they were sold off at different prices depending on their qualifications, an IOM official in Libya said. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-42095629 |

Nairaland / General / Bitcoin Mining Consumes More Electricity Than 20+ European Countries by octus2008(m): 3:12pm On Nov 23, 2017 |
As Bitcoin continues its stride towards mainstream adoption, it turns out that its surging price rates are not the only thing experiencing a sudden increase. New research indicates that the popular cryptocurrency now consumes more electricity than more than 20 countries in Europe. Researchers from British energy price comparison platform Power Compare have discovered that the total volume of electricity required for mining Bitcoin – the computational process that keeps transactions on the blockchain moving – now amounts to more consumption than 159 individual countries. Among others, the list includes Ireland, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia and Iceland. Interestingly, only three countries out of the entire continent of Africa currently consume more electricity than Bitcoin: South Africa, Egypt and Algeria. As far as the rest of the world goes, Power Compare mentions Ecuador, Puerto Rico, North Korea and many more. Power Compare further notes that Bitcoin’s current estimated annual electricity consumption stands at 29.05 TWh – the equivalent of 0.13 percent of the world’s overall electricity needs. This means that, if Bitcoin miners were to found their own autonomous state, it would rank 61st globally in terms of total electricity consumption. That ought to give you a better idea why Bitcoin’s mining community played such a crucial part in the dreadful Segwit2X discussions. According to Power Compare, Bitcoin mining has seen a nearly 30 percent increase in consumption over the last 30 days alone. Curiously, the research points out that, assuming Bitcoin’s electricity needs continue growing at this rate, the global mining consumption could be greater than the UK’s entire electricity supply by October next year. In case you were wondering what all this electricity bills round up to, the researchers estimate the annual Bitcoin mining electricity costs currently stand at $1.5 billion. One thing to keep in mind is that the estimation assumes mining occurs in places with low electricity rates. So the number could be even higher in reality. |
