Governors Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Matawalle (Zamfara), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), and Umar Ganduje (Kano); as well as House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila are among ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, governors and leaders, who have publicly and frontally opposed the implementation of the new naira policy. Indeed, El-Rufai, Bello and Matawalle took the matter to the Supreme Court and got an interim order restraining the Federal Government from ending the use of the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes, on February 10. Initially, the order was till February 15 when the matter was slated for hearing and now extended to February 22 and anytime the matter is determined. On Thursday, President Buhari, during a nationwide broadcast, extended the use of the old N200 note to April 10 and declared that the old N500 and N1000 ceased to be legal tender on February 10 as affirmed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. However, Governor el-Rufai, urged Kaduna residents to continue spending the old notes and threatened to sanction any commercial bank, businesses and anyone rejecting the old notes in Kaduna. ‘Let no artificial and illegal deadline frighten you. Whether you live in towns, villages or in our isolated rural communities, do not feel stampeded to deposit your old notes in the banks. Hold on to them because the law is on your side,” el-Rufai said. Governors Dapo Abiodun and Sanwo-Olu also issued similar directives in Ogun and Lagos. Currently, there is tension in the land, many banks have been burnt across the country on account of the scarcity of the new naira notes and even the old ones. Yesterday, protests raged in Lagos; Ibadan, Oyo State and some parts of the country over the naira scarcity that has also been worsened by fuel scarcity.

The Presidency said the forthcoming 2023 general elections will hold, regardless of the controversies surrounding the naira swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu stated this in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday. Shehu said there are no plans by President Buhari to extend his government beyond May 29, 2023, or install an interim government. The statement reads, “Let us clearly, specifically and emphatically state that there is absolutely no truth to the claim that President Muhammadu Buhari is working towards an interim government or even worse; “The truncation of democracy- democracy that he has helped to keep alive not only here at home, in West Africa but throughout the continent.” According to Shehu, the talk of an interim government and truncation of democracy is way off the mark. “Those who peddle it stand to gain nothing—nothing at all—but the creation of panic and the incitement of the public against the federal government,” the statement read. The President’s spokesperson however, described the narrative as a dangerous dimension by “people who are afraid that they may lose their elections.”

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said none of his competitors in the 2023 presidential elections can match his track record. Tinubu made this assertion in an opinion piece published in The Economist recently. The APC candidate is contesting the February 25 presidential election alongside his counterparts in the People’s Democratic Party, PDP; Labour Party, LP; and the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP; Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso respectively. The former governor of Lagos state noted that during his time as governor, he unveiled a “legacy of technocratic governance which was instituted by enlisting talent from the private sector. Insecurity and crime were tackled through better funding of the police force.” He said, “For this vital task, I have a track record my competitors cannot match. During my tenure as governor of Lagos between 1999 and 2007, the state went from being a difficult, often dangerous place to a development success story. “We quadrupled state tax revenues, putting those funds directly to work through investing in public services and infrastructure. A legacy of technocratic governance was instituted by enlisting talent from the private sector. “Insecurity and crime were tackled through better funding of the police force. Investment and the business sector thrived. Today, Lagos would rank among Africa’s ten largest economies and does not rely on oil revenues to fund its budget,” he said. Recall that Tinubu has consistently harped on his achievements during his tenure as the governor of Lagos state.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, has said she begged the wife of her husband’s running mate, Hajia Nana Shettima, for N2 million on Wednesday. Oluremi revealed this to tackle the belief of many who thought the former Lagos governor and his family was rich and that money made them popular. Tinubu’s wife said this on Thursday, during a town hall meeting with People Living With Disabilities in Abuja. “When they say he has the money of the world, I just wonder. Mrs Shettima knows that I begged her just to give me N2m yesterday,” she said. She also disclosed that her husband’s benevolence was the reason behind his popularity and not money. Oluremi said, “Asiwaju’s secret is not about money, contrary to what people think, he is a very compassionate man and very generous. There is nothing he can’t give.” “I remember after he finished as governor, we used to have this staff at home; if you needed anything, he would say go and meet so and so―that is who he is. “The people you see in rallies are not after money. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has refused to sign the peace accord organised by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Gombe state. The Peace Accord was organised by the Commission in collaboration with Inter-agency consultative committee on election security on Wednesday. The PDP Chairman in the state, Maj. Gen. Amnon Kwaskebe (retd.), said the police have failed to protect the party and its facilities in the state. He claimed the party’s governorship candidate, Muhammad Barde, was the “most attacked gubernatorial candidate in the state”. He said, “Our decline to sign is a decision of the leadership of the party at the state level. All of you are aware of what has been happening to the PDP in terms of attacks on facilities. We have reported officially to all the security agencies, especially the lead security agency, but nothing was done and that is why you have seen our gubernatorial candidate is not here. I don’t blame him for not coming, I have come as party chairman. “Our candidate is the most attacked gubernatorial candidate. We have tried to report officially without reacting and the police have not taken any action. We have declined to sign this document.” Noting lack of confidence in the process, the chairman said, “we have confidence in the process but you build peace on established peace.” Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Oqua Etim, decried the decision of PDP leadership not to sign the peace accord. He said, “It is unfortunate that PDP out of 18 parties did not sign. It is not only their billboards that were destroyed. Is it only one political party’s billboard that was destroyed? Even churches billboards are destroyed. We have a signage agency, have they tried to find out who actually destroyed the billboards? Can billboards vote?” On alleged buying of Permanent Voters Cards, Etim said it was irrelevant for political parties to buy up PVCs. He said, “They should stop making wild allegations, if you take ATM to the bank, do you take the pins.” But, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ibrahim Umar, said buying PVCs at the moment is foolhardy. He said, “It is very abnormal, because of technology, I don’t know what you mean by cloning PVCs. “If you come with PVC not your own, you will not be accredited.” On political parties’ participation, he said, “it is their wish, we are not coercing anybody. We signed the last accord in 2019 and it was successful. Gombe has 14 governorship candidates 13 signed and it fair. Since it is not compulsory.” Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, said “as the governor, I’m the chief security officer of the state and APC is the ruling party not only in Gombe but in the entire federation. It is only when there is peace, security, and tranquility that there will be good governance, we are after good governance.” Recall that 18 political would participate in elections in the state, with 14 presenting candidates for the gubernatorial election. The peace accord is voluntary and not mandatory for political parties to participate. However, it’s a mediation process that helps forestall violence.

The Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has urged the people of Cross River to be loyal to the party, noting that the state would benefit if he emerges winner in the forthcoming election. “Continue to be loyal and PDP will continue to be loyal and beneficial to you”, former vice president said during the party’s rally in Cross River. While giving reasons he should be voted for, Atiku said he would restructure the country for Nigerian’s benefit. On restructuring, Atiku opined that he would reduce the burden of the federal government to states and local governments. He noted this, saying that it would enhance accountability and responsibility of the government to Nigerians. “By restructuring we mean, reducing the burden of the FG’s to states and local governments to hold them accountable”.

President Muhammadu Buhari said he is fully with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Buhari stated this while addressing supporters during the ACP presidential campaign at the Pantami stadium, Gombe, on Monday. Buhari appealed to residents of Gombe state to vote for Tinubu and other candidates of the party. The president urged them to ignore alleged propaganda about his support for another candidate. The Director-General of APC presidential campaign council and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, disclosed that the president was represented by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami, at the event. Buhari assured that Tinubu’s presidency would provide more dividends of democracy for Nigerians. According to Buhari, his regime has approved over 65 per cent of projects in Gombe State, adding that Tinubu would ensure the gainful exploration of the Kolmani oil field in the state. He said, “I want to remind you of the Federal Government approved projects in Gombe which are over 60 – 65 per cent; from taking over of Gombe Airport, to deliberate interventions in agriculture. People should reciprocate the support by voting APC. Buhari commended the governor’s developmental strides, especially the industrial hub which was christened Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, noting that it would yield the needed development. The Senate President of Nigeria, Ahmed Lawan, who also spoke at the rally, described the 16 years of the People’s Democratic Party as “reckless, one that should not be made again.” He said, “They refused to look at Kolmani, there was Boko Haram during their reign, Tinubu is capable to provide transformational leadership.” The APC presidential candidate, Tinubu, urged the electorates to vote for him, stressing that his administration would bring about progress.

The Presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Yabagi Yusuf Sani, an Engineer, has said that but for Igbo land and Lagos State, Nigeria would have been a dull country. Sani who made the remark at the weekend while flagging off his presidential campaign in Umuahia, Abia State, commended the ingenuity and enterprising spirit of the Igbo race. “Apart from Igbo land and perhaps, Lagos, the rest of the country, it seems, are sleeping”, Sani said. He further observed that Nigeria had not been fair to Ndigbo despite their contributions to the national economy. The presidential hopeful promised to make Aba a major industrial hub in Africa if voted into power. He also promised to give conscious attention to Small and Medium Enterprises and the manufacturing sector. “We have seen what is happening in China, Malaysia and we can make Aba a huge economic hub. We will build this nation economically by encouraging the manufacturing sector”. He identified lack of respect for the rule of law on the part of Government as the major cause of agitation for self-determination in parts of the country. Sani promised to enthrone the rule of law in Nigeria if voted into power. “Under ADP government everyone in Nigeria will be treated according to the provisions of the law irrespective of the part of the country the person comes from or the religion he belongs,” he said. He argued that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would not have been remanded in detention indefinitely after being freed by the court if the Nigerian Government had respect for rule of law. The ADP presidential hopeful acknowledged that the Igbo nation is being treated unfairly and He accused the All Progressive Congress, APC -led Federal Government of marginalising the Igbo nation ”I am saying this with all sense of responsibility, the people of South East have been pushed to the wall and I do believe that when you give people equal opportunity in their country, believe you me, they will work for that country as if there is no tomorrow. ”So if we make this country to belong to all of us, if we do not discriminate because of tribe, religion or language you speak, this country is the promise of greatness”. In his remarks, the Vice-presidential candidate, Dr Okey Udo, solicited the support of Abia voters for ADP in the 2023 general election. He said that the party had an array of competent candidates well prepared to take Nigeria out of the woods. Udo, who is an indigene of Abia State said that Ndigbo would receive their fair share under the ADP administration. In her remarks the Director General of the ADP Presidential Campaign Council, Engr. Josephine Elebute-Halle specially appealed to Abia women to back ADP candidates at all levels with their huge voting strength. “Let your votes count for us; let us make credible change possible,” she said. In their respective speeches, the governorship candidate of Abia ADP, Hon Jonas Chibuike Okafor; and the State Chairman, Deacon Benjamin Arisa, predicted victory for the party. The New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP has asked the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC to stop playing the victim card, saying there will be no sympathy votes in the coming general elections. In a statement, the Chief Campaign Spokesperson of the NNPP in Kano, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, expressed concern over what was described as the latest lies and smearing information allegedly propagated by the APC against NNPP. Atiku cancels presidential campaign in Rivers He however, assured that the stakeholders and supporters of NNPP in Kano will remain peace-loving citizens and patriotic as they go about their peaceful campaign rallies across the state. The statement reads partly, “We read in some quarters of the media the latest threat from the APC, accusing Kano oue party, the NNPP of violence. This is little more than playing victim card by the ruling party whose identity is synonymous to political thuggery and deadly violence against the unsuspecting members of the opposition parties in the State. “The new attempt by the APC to deceive the electorates into believing that they are peace-loving failed at a point of planning as it remains fresh in our minds how some ranking leaders of the party and serving political office holders of the frustrated party, APC, snatched ballot box at Gama collation centre of Nasarawa local government in 2019 gubernatorial election that impose Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on the people.” According to the statement, the new grand plan by the APC is to use their thugs and urchins to impersonate members of the NNPP and unleash violence on the people so that they can play victims is unthoughtful and sadistic as the masses contend with current economic hardship. It further stated, “This is how they think they can win the elections since they have lost popularity with Kano masses and elites. These tactics cannot save them from imminent defeat at the polls in February and March 2023. “The NNPP is immune to peace and will continue to expose all the sinister plans of the APC towards manipulating 2023 elections as the coming poll is a typical referendum again eight years of bad governance of Governor Ganduje-led administration in Kano. “We are not surprised by this type of propaganda because APC has lost out already by compensating Nasiru Gawuna and Murtala Sule with the gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial tickets for allegedly perpetrating illegal disruption of Gama collation center in 2019. Former heads of state and presidents in Nigeria have given their support to the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. The former Nigerian leaders gave their support at the Council of State meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa on Friday. The meeting had in attendance Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd), Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), and Goodluck Jonathan, while former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, joined the meeting online. Two former Chief Justice of the Federation, Alfa Belgore and Mahmud Muhammad, were also in attendance. But, they gave a caveat that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele should make new Naira notes available or recirculate the old notes to ease the suffering of Nigerians. Jointly briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Governors of Taraba, Darius Ishaku , Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, AGF Abubakar Malami, said generally the policy was accepted by members but raised concerns about the implementations. Ishaku said, “The CBN was advised to make money available in quantum. The old money can also be recirculated to ease the suffering of the poorest of the poor.” Sanwo-Olu, on his part, said that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), briefed the council on a state of preparedness for the 2023 general elections, and assured that they were fully prepared. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Sokoto, told the Sultan of Sokoto,, His Eminence, Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar 111 that with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Nigeria is in a safe hand. President Buhari stated this when he led the APC presidential campaign team on courtesy call to the Sultan. He told the Sultan that the campaign team was at the palace to solicit his continuous support and that he chose to join the campaign train of Asiwaju Tinubu for three reasons. He said he and Tinubu have been together as friends in the last 20 years and the fact that he performed wonderfully well when he was Governor of Lagos State. “The third one is that Tinubu won my party’s presidential primary in a free, fair and credible process and therefore, he is the legitimate candidate of my party.” He appealed to Sultan to support Tinubu, who Sultan called; “The Jagaban of the World.” He said, ” We (him and Tinubu) have been together for more than twenty years. I know him as a very committed Nigerian. I can attest to his qualities as a leader and I can assure you with him Nigeria will remain in safe hands. “I came to solicit your support for our candidate and I know you will continue to support us.” Speaking earlier, the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu told the Sultan that he was in the race to win. He said, “It is a great honour to be here particularly in company of the Prwsident of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to visit the caliphate. You already know but I must repeat, this is a visit to introduce me as the presidential candidate of my party, the APC. “We recognize you don’t play politics but we have to show our respect when we come to town for campaign. “We noted one thing on our way to the palace. The enthusiasm of our people. We are grateful to the peace and co-existence of individuals and your accommodation to various people living in Sokoto. “We want to win election and since that is what we come for, we seek your blessing and endorsement. It is something you cannot reject because Mr. President is here.” Responding, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III expressed disgust on those who are in the habit of abusing and cursing leaders because of the fact that, to them, such leaders are not performing to their satisfaction. He said that cursing leaders amount to cursing the country and the system, saying that such people only succeed in complicating matters for the country. The Sultan said that the more one prays for the leaders, the more God would help such leaders to do better for the good of all. “If you pray for leaders, God may answer you and intervene to make them perform better for the benefit of all. But if you curse them, God may also answer you by intervening to make them weak and confused, also for the hardship on the people. We all suffer for the consequences of what we say about our leaders.” Sultan Sa’ad said that he had always been praying to God to help President Buhari to do better for the country, adding that even after he leaves office, he would continue to pray for him. The Sultan said that as traditional ruler, he cannot openly take side in the political contest due to take place shortly, saying that the only thing he would continue to do is to pray to God to give the country the best president that would elevate Nigeria to greater height and bring about peace, security and good standard of living for the people of the country. “Our concern is peace, security, stability and development of the country in all ramifications. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, announced measures to cushion the effects of the current scarcity of currency occasioned by Central Bank of Nigeria, naira swap and seemingly artificial fuel scarcity in the state. Sanwo-Olu, made the announcement during a state-wide broadcast on the State of the Nation, held at Lagos House, Marina. The governor, who commended residents for keeping calm even in the face of “unfortunate hardship” due to the scarcity and resilience, explained that measures became necessary to ameliorate the situation among vulnerable in the state. Some of the measures taken to cushion the effects include: The suspension of on-going construction of roads along tank farms at Ijegun-Egba area to allow for seamless movenent of petroleum tankers for easy distribution of products. Also, directed gas stations to operate on 24 hours with adequate security protection with the view to record remarkable improvement in fuel distribution to reduce long queues and the usual rush at the stations. Also, with the effect from Thursday, all public transportation in the state including Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, LagRide, LagFerry, LAST-MILE, among others, have been directed to charge 50 pet cent of current fares from passengers through the use of cowrie card. The setting up of food banks across some identified locations for distribution of food items to vulnerable which would be distributed through leaders of Community Development Associations, CDAs, religious bodies, ethnic groups, among others.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday, arraigned one Ali Bello, a nephew of Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of a Federal High Court, Abuja. Head, Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday. Count one of the charge reads: “That you, ALI BELLO, ABBA ADAUDU, YAKUBU SIYAKA ADABENEGE, IYADA SADAT, RASHIDA BELLO (at large) sometime in June, 2020 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court procured E- Traders International Limited to retain the aggregate sum of N3,081,804,654.00 (Three Billion, Eighty One Million, Eight Hundred and Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Fifty Four Naira); which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of proceeds of unlawful activity to wit: criminal misappropriation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to sections 18(a), 15(20)(d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act. Count 3 read, “That you, ALI BELLO, ABBA ADAUDU, RASHIDA BELLO (at large) sometime in November, 2021 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court procured E-Traders International Limited to transfer the aggregate sum of $570,330 (Five Hundred and Seventy Thousand, Three Hundred and Thirty United States Dollars) to account number no; 426-6644272 domiciled in TD Bank, United States of America; “which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of proceeds of unlawful activity to with: criminal misappropriation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15(2)(d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act.” The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to all the charges preferred against them. In view of their pleas, Prosecuting Counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, urged the court to give a trial date to enable the prosecution to prove its case. However, defence counsel, Ahmed Raji SAN, prayed the court to grant his client bail pending the hearing and determination of the case. Justice Egwuatu adjourned the case till 13 February, 2023 and ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional centre pending the determination of the bail application.

In what appears a move closer to revealing the identities of those alleged to be undermining the presidential aspiration of All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a top official of the party has now listed those involved in the plot. Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, had alleged last week that some elements in the Presidential Villa were working to sabotage Tinubu’s chances at the polls. Affirming the position of the governor, yesterday, National Vice Chairman, North-West of the APC, Salihu Lukman, noted that the emergence of Asiwaju Tinubu as APC’s presidential candidate was a product of an internal party contest. Lukman also formally disclosed how the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, announced Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the consensus presidential candidate and struggled to get the buy-in of the party leadership. He said: “Schemers who failed to produce neither former President Goodluck Jonathan, and Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the consensus candidate of APC have unleashed the so-called cashless policy to damage the APC and the candidature of Asiwaju Tinubu.” According to him, by the time of March 28, 2022, APC National Convention to elect National Working Committee members, presidential aspirants had emerged, and many already had their preferred candidates for the position of national chairman. He said: “Some of the presidential aspirants were able to expand their lobbies to some of the influential people around the President and perhaps succeeded to convince President Buhari to nominate Sen. Abdullahi Adamu for the position of national chairman. “Shortly after the election of Sen. Abdullahi Adamu as the National Chairman of the APC, negotiations for the emergence of a so-called consensus presidential candidate was activated.” Lukman noted that the scheming around emergence of a so-called consensus candidate was ridiculously stretched beyond the APC to include people like former President Goodluck Jonathan. He said: “These were never members of the APC. But with the active collaboration of some influential people outside the APC, some sophisticated mobilisation of so-called ‘hundred eminent businessmen, political, media and civil society leaders, including 14 current governors, 13 former governors, as well as three former senate presidents’ commenced around April 2022. “Gradually, this scheming shifted and was entrenched within APC. By May 2022, when the party began to sell its nomination forms to aspiring candidates, forms were purchased by some APC leaders for former President Goodluck Jonathan and others. “Eventually, when these schemers couldn’t succeed in popularizing both former President Jonathan and others as possible contenders to emerge as consensus presidential candidates for APC, the Senate President, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, was recruited and promoted. “It is on record that Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, on the eve of the convention that elected Asiwaju Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the party, announced to NWC members that Sen. Ahmad Lawan was the consensus presidential candidate of the party. “Members of the NWC, with Progressive Governors, rose against that move and again thanks to President Muhammadu Buhari, the contest for the presidential candidate of APC was thrown open and Asiwaju won with a wide margin. “Part of the dummy that was promoted within the APC to attempt to popularize the choice of a northerner, Sen. Ahmad Lawan, as a consensus candidate was that since PDP had elected Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, as its presidential candidate, we needed to also elect a northerner, so we can win the votes of northerners. “This is completely inconsiderate of the popular agitation for power shift in the country. It is also insensitive of the potential instability that the choice of another northerner emerging as President of the country could cause. “Ahead of the APC National Convention, APC Governors from the north had already declared their opposition against a northerner emerging as APC presidential candidate.” What worked for Tinubu He said Tinubu’s personal quality, given his track records, both as a businessman, politician, and elected governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007 and the fact that he has over the years proven himself as a fighter for democracy, was a great asset to his emergence. “This is one characteristic that has defined him and perhaps strengthened him to survive many personal attacks on his person and his integrity. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dele Momodu said the presidential candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and the Labour Paty, LP; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi respectively do not have the requisite to reposition Nigeria. Momodu, a former presidential aspirant of the PDP, made this assertion in an interview on Channels Television’s programme, The 2023 Verdict. According to Momodu, Obi is “struggling” because a presidential race is not a marathon and takes time to build bridges. But, the PDP chieftain acknowledged that Obi is a third force in Nigeria’s national politics. He said, “Usually, in many countries, you have two mainstream political parties and candidates. “In the case of Nigeria, now we seem to have a third force, the fourth force is not doing much. And who are the leading candidates? Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos and Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State.” Speaking on Obi and the Labour Party as a third force, Momodu said, “I’m a democrat, I will not disparage anybody. He (Obi) is a third force but the question is how forceful that third force is.” According to him, only his party, PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who is from Adamawa, in North-East Nigeria, has what it takes to reposition the country. He dismissed Tinubu; and Obi, saying both candidates, though they are southerners, don’t have what it takes to reposition Nigeria. “If Peter Obi is struggling, then the number four would have to struggle more. He is definitely struggling. A presidential race is a marathon; it is a long-distance race, it takes time to build up,” he added. Meanwhile, Momodu has said he never said the 2023 presidency “must” be a southern affair. He said, “I never said it (2023 presidency) must, as a matter of life and death, become a southern affair.” Recall that Momodu had said it is unfair for a northerner to succeed the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, who is from Katsina State in North-West Nigeria and whose eight-year tenure ends in May 2023. However, Momodu, who is the Director of Strategic Communications of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, said he never said the 2023 presidency “must” be a southern affair. According to him, the powers within his party changed the tempo before the primary last May by throwing the ticket open. He said, “The powers that be within PDP were the ones who changed the mood of the moment. My mood was that: yes, a lot of people within the people wanted power in the south… “Once the party decided to throw it open, you cannot blame me for that. I am a loyal party man but there is nowhere where it was signed that a southerner cannot become vice president. The party is always supreme.”

He said: “To those saying why should a Muslim succeed another Muslim? I will say to them, the truth is what every Christian is called to. And if we must say the truth, Jonathan is a Christian, Obasanjo is a Christian, Obasanjo ruled for eight years, and Jonathan ruled for six years. So, if we sum the two together, we, I said we because I am a Christian, we have ruled this country for 14 years. Buhari has ruled for eight years and Yar’Adua ruled for two years, making a total of 10 years. So, we can only be just by allowing the Muslims have a balance of four years. Also, the two Christian Presidents are from the South, so, the North has a balance of four years. “In the context of present Nigeria where we are divided in such a way that we can say Nigeria has never been as divided, whether we are talking about religious divide, political divide, ethnic divide, the fault lines are many and except we find a way to unite ourselves once more, we cannot build. We will continue to perish as fools. “So, if you ask me as a politician, that what is the greatest challenge of our country, you can say it is leadership, I believe so, but I believe it is unity first. But it is leadership that brings about unity and that is why leadership and unity go together. So, the first task is for us to unite ourselves. Whether we are talking about the challenge of killings we are witnessing here in Southern Kaduna, banditry, terrorism, whatever it is, the solution is that we unite ourselves, because divided people have never conquered anything. So, it requires unity for us to conquer all the challenges facing us in southern Kaduna and the entire country. “So, I will want to tell us that, some people will tell us that, we are Christians, we cannot vote a Muslim. Those who hate the unity of this country will want us to emphasize religion over unity. They want to divide us according to our tribes, instead of bringing us together, so that, we can work together and build a nation that is strong, united and prosperous. “They will tell you, why will a Muslim succeed another Muslim as President or why will a Fulani man succeed another Fulani man? I am being very honest, because these are the discussions you find on the streets, and some of us cannot deny the fact that, we are having these discussions. But, I want to tell us that, as I have said before unless we unite, we cannot conquer. “And I tell you, that I come from a community that is challenged by this kind of killings that you witness in Southern Kaduna, Tafawa Balewa was a national flashpoint. The solution to the killings was that we all came together, Muslims, Christians, Fulani and my own tribe people formed a peace committee that I chaired. And from the day we formed that peace committee, there have been no killings. So, there is no challenge bigger than us, there is nothing we cannot overcome if we are united”. However, Hon. Dogara cautioned the Southern Kaduna people not to waste their votes on political parties that cannot win elections. “It is not my responsibility to tell the people of Southern Kaduna what to do, because you have been very smart politically. So, I am just here to remind us of the things we know, so that we don’t forget. “If you are a pedestrian politician, ask yourself again, can you become Nigeria’s president without winning substantial votes from this region of Nirth-West based on the number of votes per zone as released by INEC? “To become President of Nigeria, you have to get 35 to 40 per cent of the votes from the North-West and win massively in the other zones. So, can Labour Party get 25 per cent of the votes from the North-West? Of course not. So, let us. It deceives us, I am not very well schooled in the Qur’an but I am schooled in the Bible; the Bible is against waste, and Jesus Christ is against waste. Jesus Christ himself who is the author and finisher of our faith frowned against the waste of food. “So, anyone who is telling you to go and waste your vote, that is the vote of the anti-Christ. President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that, within seven days, he will resolve the naira scarcity that has become a problem across the country as a result of the Central Bank of Nigeria policy to swap the old naira currency with new notes. Buhari gave this assurance while speaking to the Progressive Governors’ Forum who paid him a visit at the Presidential Villa on Friday. The governors had visited the President to seek solutions to the cash crunch which they said was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy. But, Buhari said the currency re-design would give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits. He expressed doubts about the commitment of banks in particular to the success of the policy. “Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves, even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away,” he said. He said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people and gave assurances that the balance of seven of the 10-day extension would be used to crack down on whatever stood in the way of successful implementation. “I will revert to the CBN and the minting company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” the President was quoted to have said in a statement released by his spokesman, Garba Shehu. The governors told the President that while they agreed that his decision on the currency redesign was good and that they were fully in support, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset. They told the President that, as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming. They requested the President to use his powers to direct the concurrent flourish of the new and old notes till the end of the year. The President said when he considered giving approval to the policy, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes would be printed in a foreign country and they, in turn, gave him assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment to print the currency for local needs. He said he needed to go back to find out what was actually happening. Buhari told the governors that, being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and would act in a way that there will be a solution.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed deposit money banks (DMBs) to commence the payment of the redesigned Naira notes over the counter, subject to a maximum daily payout limit of N20,000. He said: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has observed, with grave concern, the activities of persons who sell the newly redesigned banknotes and those who flagrantly abuse the legal tender by hurling wads of Naira notes in the air and stamping on the currency at social functions. “We have equally noticed the queues at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) across the country and an upward trend in the cases of people stocking and aggregating the newly introduced banknotes they serially obtain from ATMs for reasons best known to them. Also worrisome are the reported cases of unregistered persons and non-bank officials swapping banknotes for members of the public, purportedly on behalf of the CBN. “We wish to state unequivocally that, contrary to the practice of these unpatriotic persons, it is unlawful to sell the Naira, hurl (spray), or stamp on the currency under any circumstance whatsoever. For the avoidance of doubt, Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (As amended) stipulates that “spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both.” “Similarly, Section 21(4) states that “It shall also be an offence punishable under Sub-section (1) of this section for any person to hawk, sell or otherwise trade in the Naira notes, coins or any other note issued by the Bank.” “Accordingly, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is collaborating with the Nigeria Police, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to address the unpatriotic practice. “We, therefore, warn Nigerians, particularly those at social functions such as birthdays, weddings and funerals, to desist from disrespecting the Naira or risk being arrested by law enforcement agencies. “While reiterating our commitment to Nigerians to ensure the effective distribution of the newly introduced Naira banknotes, we urge them to exercise patience as the CBN is working assiduously to address the challenge of queues at ATMs. “In line with this resolve, the Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has directed deposit money banks (DMBs) to commence the payment of the redesigned Naira notes over the counter, subject to a maximum daily payout limit of N20,000. “We also admonish members of the public to embrace and adopt other payment channels for their transactions. The Naira is our legal tender and symbol of national pride. Therefore, let us respect it and handle it with care”

Barring any last-minute change of plans, Governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, will on Friday meet with President Muhammadu Buhari on to discuss challenges being faced by Nigerians over the scarcity of Naira notes. The governors will also discuss allegations that some members of his kitchen cabinet are working against the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai had stirred the hornet’s nest on Wednesday when he accused some elements within the Presidential Villa of working to frustrate Tinubu. He had also faulted the Naira redesign policy of the administration which he said has caused untold hardship to Nigerians and cast the party and Tinubu in a bad light.

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP seeking to restore the nullification of the participation of Osun’s ex-governor Gboyega Oyetola and his deputy Benedict Alabi in the July 16, 2022 governorship election. A Supreme Court five-member panel,led by Justice Centus Nweze on Thursday held that the appeal by the PDP lacked merit and directed the counsel to the PDP Kehinde Ogunwumiju to withdraw it. The apex court held that the PDP could not, under the law, question the process leading to the emergence of Oyetola and Alabi as candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja had in a judgment on September 30, 2022, nullified the participation of Oyetola and Alabi in the governorship election on the grounds that their nomination forms were endorsed by an acting Chairman of APC, who was also a serving governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni. Justice Nwite’s judgment was set aside by the Court of Appeal, Abuja in a judgment in December last year, a decision the PDP appealed to the Supreme Court.

The Director of Special Media Projects & Operations & New Media, Tinubu/Shettima Pres. Campaign Council, Femi Fani-Kayode said some members of his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC may be working for what he described as weak presidential candidates, particularly Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Fani-Kayode stated this in an interview on Channels Television’s The 2023 Verdict, on Wednesday. He said, “All these distractions are very disturbing because we are working hard but people are working night and day in order to create obstacles on our path to make sure that this transition does not go smoothly. “My own view is that some are but I don’t see how that is going to go well, given the fact that the opposition is so weak. I’m saying that some of them may be working for candidates I consider weak like Atiku.” Recall that Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state had earlier claimed that there are some elements in the Presidential Villa seeking the defeat of the party’s flag bearer in this month’s poll. But, Fani-Kayode said the reason for all that is happening currently is to enrage not just the ruling party but the political class. He, however, said, Tinubu will prevail and will be elected president, regardless of what the so-called elements do.

NNEWI – Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen early hours of Wednesday attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, office in Ojoto, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The gunmen also attacked the Nnobi Police Station and a residential building within the station, located also in the same Council Area. Vanguard gathered that the hoodlums, armed with IEDs, petrol bombs and other explosives invaded the facilities at about 1:45am on Wednesday, in four unmarked Sienna vehicles. Although, details of both attacks are still sketchy, however, a source said the hoodlums were repelled by the security operatives before they could carry out any dastardly act. The source said that the gun men, while shooting sporadically killed a 16-year-old boy, a relative of a serving policeman in the station, while the another victim, a 15-year-old female, sustained a gunshot injury and has been taken to the hospital where she is receiving treatment. Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said security had been reinforced in the areas, just as the situation is still being monitored. According to Ikenga, “Anambra State Police Command today 1/2/2023 has reinforced security deployment in the state, following an attack on the INEC office in idemili South, Ojoto and Nnobi Police Station. “The hoodlums came in their numbers by 1:45 am today 1/2/2023, with four unmarked Sienna vehicles, armed with IEDs, Petrol bombs and other explosives, invaded the INEC office, the Police Station and the residential building in the station. “Unfortunately, one boy aged 16 years, a relative of a serving policeman in the station was murdered by the armed men, while the other, a female aged 15 years old sustained a gunshot injury. She has been taken to the hospital where she is receiving treatment. “The situation is being monitored and further details shall be communicated, please.” 1 Like 1 Share
