PoliticsRe: 2015: Who Will Defeat Jonathan? by oddy4real(m): 3:24pm On Jun 21, 2013
masterdre: Let me say from the outset that it would be scandalous and a grave mistake for the opposition – and by this, I refer to the All Progressives Congress (APC) – to look toward any of the gladiators in the current war of attrition in the People’s Democratic Party, Aminu Tambuwal, Babangida Aliyu, Sule Lamido, etc., as a candidate for the presidency in 2015. With all due respect to these men, and not minding the fact that there are PDP elements in the APC, it would not only smack of unseriousness, but would leave voters no choice in 2015.

Having exorcised the incubus of a PDP takeover of the opposition, let’s pose the fundamental question: who will defeat President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015? We need to pose this question frontally and be sincere in our answers. That is the only way the opposition can assess its strength and chances as we head into the battle of 2015.

PoliticsRe: Re: The Mokola Flyover Project - Information For The Mis-informed! by oddy4real(m): 3:23pm On Jun 21, 2013
CyberG:

This post was initially made to address people who only could see the flyover without any concept of the real picture of things. Blind criticisms of people like Okija is a mere show of stupidi.ty, really. I make my post not to convince you otherwise of your ill-conceived and prejudiced opinions for I am sure you have never been at that location before but for those who will be dispassionate and be objective this may help them to see. At the end of the day, the bridge is built by the government elected by the majority and that will suffice. Now to the issue:

Mokola is a MAJOR road developed for a long time before MOST states were even created in the SS. Ibadan is one of the most populous cities in Nigeria and the Mokola road connects Dugbe (business center) to Sango (another mega business area). From either end, the traffic is humongous and Mokola itself is densely populated with lots of big buildings, new and old and hosts major companies, banks, filling stations and private businesses and hospitals. The Mokola road is a DUAL CARRIAGE road itself but with the years of PDP, lawlessness allowed people to park or stop arbitrarily on one lane constricting the road at important places, exacerbating the traffic gridlock. The intersection at Mokola goes to Sabo on one hand and the other takes you towards UCH, Secretariat, etc. Now this should give you an idea that it is impossible to make the fly over any BIGGER for then you will in fact have not only to destroy all the buildings from somewhere within Mokola all the way past that major intersection (to Sabo and Secretariat, etc), that is 4 way destruction of 2 (dual carriage) roads! How much money will be needed for compensation? How much losses to businesses? In the circumstance, the entire area has to be almost effectively shutdown and this is a BIG part of the downtown Ibadan traffic! This is impossible and impracticable and goes against every grain of the economic welfare of the people and business! Now, let me tell you before you jump to any more conclusions!

That traffic on the long stretch of Mokola road going to that intersection can be reduced by linking to the road that turns towards Sabo before the Mokola intersection (assuming you are coming from Dugbe) and similar bypasses exist if you are coming from the opposite direction. To alleviate the gridlock at that intersection, eliminate the traffic that needs to turn left or right coming from Dugbe and Sango so they can go on one uninterrupted path. Provide the traffic that has to turn towards Secretariat or Sabo an opportunity without breaking stride and let the rest of the traffic proceed without much of a slow down. The result ==> eliminate or severely reduce the gridlock on one of the most important traffic arteries in the state and the minimum cost to businesses and individuals. In case you have not noticed, the bridge is like a 'bypass' on a dual carriage road, the road was a dual carriage road before any 'golden' dual carriage bridge you see in whatever state. Every project, terrain, resources and fundamentals are unique and a solution that may work in Akwa Ibom where the population density is very low can not and will not work in highly urbanized areas and built-up cities! Even if some buildings could be destroyed, I think it is VERY important to preserve the history of a city and its landmarks! There are places and universities in the West that have been over a hundred years old, with old architecture but modernized to serve the same purpose as new buildings. Plus, a new road, a new building today constructed by destroying an old one does not mean it would not get old one day itself! The key is to be innovative and creative about planning! I will take what the State government has done any day than what it was before and what you ignorantly propose here! While the government is doing that, they know they have LOTS of options which you cannot judge or see from a few pictures. For example, manage the traffic that goes towards the flyover by expanding existing and creating new adjoining roads towards and away from the intersection. There is a major intersection at some place called Danax before you get to the fly-over so traffic with no business in secretariat or towards Sango can turn towards Sabo, Adamsingba, etc. FYI, a network of roads in fact bypasses that flyover and can link you on your way to Sabo again where you link that road at Veterinary or almost opposite the road that goes to Premier Hotels. If you are coming from Sango, there is another detour towards Secretariat that exists around Group Medical, etc. I can go on and on but it only makes sense to those with an open mind who can appreciate the enormity of management of resources in a modern city, not village where you have nothing to think of drilling a few columns into the ground and placing your 'dual carriage flyover' on it!
so what does your epistle teach us?

PoliticsRe: ABU Students Describe Abati As National Embarrassment by oddy4real(m): 10:34am On Jun 13, 2013
Brimmie: The Ahmadu Bello University Student Representative Council (ABUSRC) has criticized Reuben Abati, President Goodluck Jonathan’s spokesman, for his verbal attack Nuhu Ribadu who last week presented a paper at the university. Mr. Abati’s fiery response suggested that the government regarded Mr. Ribadu’s paper as an attempt to take aim at Mr. Jonathan.

In a detailed statement, ABUSRC described Mr. Abati’s outburst as an embarrassment to Nigerians and the academic community.

Signed the ABUSRC’s president, Abubakar A. Rafindadi, the statement declared: “As an impeccably responsible students’ body, the Students’ Representative Council of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, notes with utter consternation and disappointment, the reaction by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati on a lecture delivered by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu during a One Day Public Lecture organized by ABUSRC on 8th June, 2013, in Assembly Hall of the Samaru Main Campus. With all due respect to the revered Presidency, the way and manner in which the Presidential Adviser came out and launched his characteristic campaign of calumny against perceived opponents to his boss, this time against Mallam Nuhu Ribadu in the national dailies, is very disheartening. It is also instructive to note that he did so on account of total misconstruction and deliberate distortion of the contents of the speech delivered by Ribadu.

“In the said lecture entitled ‘Political Engagement: A New Approach,’ Ribadu attempted to locate the role of all stakeholders in the Nigerian enterprise, particularly the youth, in rising up to the myriad challenges of national cohesion, entrenchment of democratic values, the increasingly rising tide of oligarchic tendencies in the nation’s politics, the divisive and exclusionist siren calls among parochial ethnic chauvinists, among other very important national issues including insecurity. We view as unfair as well as provocative, the statement credited to Abati by national dailies that ‘President Jonathan and his administration will not be distracted from the diligent implementation of the agenda by the falsehood and vituperations of Ribadu and his new friends’. It is disgustingly surprising that this statement was made as an attack on a paper presented which was tailored to address the aforementioned challenges.

“It is instructive to note that the lecture in question looked at Nigeria and its embarrassing predicaments, and not at any particular person or group. No mention was made of anybody’s name. Naturally, one wonders why the hoopla! In the lecture, this was, amongst others, what Ribadu said ‘...we need to come together to make our democracy work; let us drop any form of identity that introduces us as something other than ‘citizens’, and let us drop any citizenship that asks for anything other than ‘change’ for the better. Let us destroy any institution that preaches divisions and exclusions’. For goodness sake, fellow Nigerians, what is wrong with a paper (or for that matter, its author) that advocates for the much-sought-after ideals, as quoted above?

That Nigeria and Nigerians need take their destiny into their own hands is, in the opinion of ABUSRC, which is made up of true democrats, (and indeed the majority of well-meaning Nigerians), a right philosophy on the right track. Interestingly, this is the philosophy that pervades throughout the paper delivered by Mallam Ribadu.

“It is equally important to emphatically state here that the fact that Nigeria is in unfortunately ailing situation is not in doubt. Therefore, why should it become a crime when Nigerians are told that there is a problem with their dear country, with the intention that they may be spurred to wake up to clear the mess for the political and economic development which the nation badly needs?”

The students’ statement continued: “As true democrats, we strongly believe in intellectual exchange of ideas so as to move this nation and its nascent democracy forward. It will doubtless not augur well for this country and its politics when its leaders consider any attempt to enlighten the public politically as irresponsible and subversive. The ABUSRC believes in the great possibility of a greater Nigeria with the active participation of all and sundry, whether one is in government or not. In view of the above, we view as sine qua non for the achievement of the above goal, the entrenchment of freedom of speech which the Nigerian constitution guarantees. And it sounds paradoxical for a government that takes pride in ‘consistently (upholding) the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights’ to now come out berating a Nigerian who has lawfully expressed his opinion as guaranteed by the law of the land.

“On a final note, if Nigeria should move forward politically and otherwise (which we believe so), leaders should learn to tolerate opposition, allow the freedom of expression to be exercised and look at things in proper perspective. Decontextualizing issues for personal and/or political reasons will not help our drive for a more prosperous, egalitarian and united Nigeria.”
