Gunmen suspected to be sea robbers have attacked a speedboat and shot dead a five-year-old girl in Bayelsa State.

The deceased, identified as Comfort, her sibling and their mother, Lovina Isegu, were reportedly aboard the speedboat with six other passengers.

They were travelling from the Swali Market Waterfront in [color=#000000]Yenagoa[/color], the state capital, to Koluama 1 and 2 in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state when the incident happened around 5pm on Wednesday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the pirates opened fire on the speedboat while the driver was trying to flee after sighting them as they approached Koluama.

The state Chairman, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Mr Ogoniba Ipigansi, confirmed the attack, adding that the boat driver, Mr Okilo Orubiko, was also shot.

According to him, Orubiko sustained serious gunshot wounds but managed to navigate the boat and the passengers to Koluama 1, where he was taken for medical treatment.

Ipigansi said, “We are calling on the state and federal governments to pay serious attention to the security of lives and property of drivers and passengers travelling on the waterways.

“We particularly urge the government to immediately do something to address the porous security in these areas as lives and property are no longer safe on the waterways.” ,,

The Nigerian police is saddled with the mandate of enforcing law and order in the country also also maintaining internal security. Impressively, it has effectively discharged its functions over the years through the support of the government and public. However, this could only be achieved with the presence of competent individuals who put the interest of their nation first.

In every institution, there are great men and woman who are always worthy of celebration as a result of the way they have distinguished themselves in excellence - the armed forces is particularly known for this. The presence of capable personalities is what builds strong institutions. Just as the popular saying goes " oil flows from the head" which implies that good leadership always starts from the people at the top. A few brilliant individuals at the helm of affairs in any organisation is enough to make a difference and institute the necessary desired change.

An organisation is as good as its leadership. Having said that, let's bring to notice some top officers of the Nigeria Police who are doing well for the nation. Our focus here however is those who have either served or are currently serving under the administration of the present government.

Before that let's do a quick recap; the government of President Buhari has been very committed in it's effort to ensure an effective police force that will be equipped enough to handle any form of threat to internal security. In an attempt to achieve this, it has made various changes in the leadership of some security heads particularly the police which is why we have seen new faces climbing the hierarchy of the paramilitary institution. In the current administration, about 5 different inspector general's of police have been appointed. Some of this appointments have generated mixed reactions for sentimental reasons. Why many are of the argument, that boss should be from another region other the north, a good still emphasis on the competence of the leader regardless of his ethnicity which is a valid point anyway.

The perception of lopsidedness can be countered with some of the senior ranks in the force which are also of other ethnicities like Igbo. Some of this people occupy the positions of AIG, DIG and other top offices. So here, we make a list of officers of Igbo extraction who have been in leadership positions of the police unit and some who are still occupying such seats.

1. Frank Mba:

We must have regularly heard of the name or even seen the face. After the Inspector general, Frank MBA is probably the most seen officer in the police. He is the public relations officer of the force headquarters in Abuja - a position which automatically makes him the image maker of the unit. DCP Frank is usually at the fore front of relating with the public and receiving complains. He is in charging of conveying information to the media.

Frank MBA has a rich educational background having studied in several institutions. The police PRO happens to be a lawyer by profession with a masters degree from a university in Scotland. He has undergone several professional courses which makes him evidently qualified for the office which he occupies. MBA hails from south easter Nigeria and was appointed as the public relations officer by one of the IGP's appointed by President Buhari.

2. Peace Ibekwe:

A Peace maker and a crime fighter was the slogan used to describe the vary courageous Peace Ibekwe. As one of the few woman to rise to such level in the paramilitary, Peace proved herself to be very resilient. Mrs Ibekwe is a native of Onitsha in Anambra state and she was commissioner of police in Ebonyi State. She served at different divisions in the police and became an Assistant Inspector General. Some time in 2019, the female officer was recommended for promotion by the Police service commission and she was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police by the Buhari presidency. She was once tipped to take over the mantle of leadership of the then Inspector General, Ibrahim Idris before her retirement in 2019.

3. Celestine Okoye:

Also an indigene of Anambra State, Celestine has held the position of commissioner in Zamfara and a few other states before being promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General. Okoye was among those elevated to that position by the former IGP alongside a few others. He stood with discipline and rendered selfless service to the nation. He recently retired and is currently a member of the APC in his home state.

4. Godwin Nwobodo:

Nwobodo occupied the position of DIG under president Buhari's government before retiring. He was formerly a commissioner before his appointment. He served under Inspector Idri's and Adamu respectively in that capacity before leaving office.

5. Alex Okpara:

Inspector Alex was promoted the level of Deputy IG of police alongside his counterpart Godwin. He was an outstanding officer who worked assiduously to discharge his duties.

6. Joseph Egbunike:

Joseph was among the second in command to the police boss as he was the deputy in charge finance and accounts. Also he has a rich educational background having bagged a both a bachelor and masters degree Law. The former Deputy IG served for over thirty years with the paramilitary agency. At a time he was the only south easterner in that hierarchy. Egbunike is from Anambra state, Nigeria and was still very much in service even in the Buhari administration before proceeding on retirement.

Tinubu's interest in the number office of the land - the seat of the presidency is now clear to us. Even though he has not publicly declared his intention but his body language says so. His campaign has been gathering momentum and am sure he has been secretly putting things to order. The "jagagban" as he is fondly called is a big wing who has a good number of followers and loyalist. Even in this current administration, we are aware of the kind of influence he wields when it comes to political matters.

As one of the strong forces that aided president Buhari and Osibanjo to power, his strength can definitely not be ignored or underplayed. However, the political 'lion' may need to prove this strength of his once more in the battle that will befall him in the year 2023. In fact, it has already started! Ahmed Tinubu has been experiencing some 'ups and downs' regarding his interest in the presidency. As subtle campaign moves are being made on his behalf, the former Lagos state governor has been facing intense opposition. Tinubu's ambition will certainly split political personalities and groups; its only a matter of time.

As the APC's chieftain keeps battling his way to the seat of government, some sentiments are sure to play out. His challenge could be in some sections of the north and also the south excluding his own region. But even at that, he won't have a free ride there because the likes of Fayemi and others are probably eyeing the office. While we recognise his strength, the south east will be a tough ground for him with reasons being that he has not been able to spread his tentacles to the region.

Even some members of the APC in the east may not necessarily support him. Many prominent figures are also battling for the presidency and probably will have many reasons not to support Tinubu as it could be to their own detriment.

Before we delve into a long conversation, let's take a look at some of the prominent Igbo personalities that could move against Asiwaju for one valid reason or the other;

1. Rochas Okorocha:

If you have observed Rocha's political career, you will confirm that he is even more desperate for the position of the presidency than his Lagos State counterpart. In fact, Asiwaju's ambition is a threat to ex IMO state who has been vying for the office since 2023. Though the duo belong to the same party, Okorocha strongly believes the the south east should be given the chance to occupy the presidency and therefore will be in opposition to any other aspirants from another region.

2. Ike Ekweremadu:

The former deputy senate president will surely not be in good terms with some factions of the All Progressive Congress party particularly those loyal to Bola Tinubu. Neither is he a fan of the ruling party. The incidence of how politicians who identify with Asiwaju and APC tried to humiliate him and his principal Saraki then is still fresh in his memory. Even the impeachment attempt against him and Saraki which failed was orchestrated by the APC. Ekweremadu is not even close to being an APC supporter no matter the candidate involved and he will possibly use his influence to resist his campaign.

3. Rotimi Amaechi:

Though he hails from River's State, south south Nigeria, he is considered to be an Igbo man by tribe. Amaechi is an unapologetic member of the party in power but that does not guarantee his support for just any candidate from the party. Though the transport minister may not be at rift with the south western leader, he surely has his own motives. Amaechi's body language suggest he is aiming for a higher political office which is why he is fighting vehemently for the All Progressive Congress to take over River's state in order to please and get the attention of some political heavyweights. Rumors from certain quarters have it that the ex Rivers State legislator could be tipped to be a running mate to any of the possible APC presidential candidate from the north. So Rotimi may have to support a northern candidate. This may not be far from the truth because anything can happen!

4. Eyinnia Abaraibe:

Undoubtedly, Abaraibe is one of the prominent leaders in the south east who has won the heart of his people. At a time were some Igbo's are speaking ill of their leaders and accusing them of connivance with certain elements to shortchange them, Eyinnia seems to be excluded from such category. The Abia State senator has distinguished himself to be a true son of the soil by championing the course of equity for his people. In the process of doing this, the senate minority leader has had to face staunch opposition and has also had to confront the 'high and mighty' to advocate his course. He is like the voice of the people. This action has made his colleagues and opponents from the other party to seriously come against him. Of course, Asiwaju is a top member of the government he persistently criticises and also constantly supports their actions. So you need no prophet to tell you that the paths of the duo can not cross.

5. Willie Obiano:

For Mr. Willie, he is neither a member of the APC nor PDP but nevertheless he has something to either gain or lose peradventure any of the party comes into power. There may be no personal issues between the duo but however we have always known APGA to be in alliance with the PDP in any presidential election. This how's to say that Governor Willie will be more comfortable with a northern PDP candidate than his fellow southern APC aspirant.

6. David Umahi:

Umahi's case could be more peculiar here because in the first place, his reason for decamping to the All Progressive Congress was strictly based on political motives. He appears to be closer with the 'cabal faction' of his party than those under the mentorship of the Yoruba leader. And as suspected, he might have received some juicy promises before he made the decision to join the APC. Umahi's suspected 2023 promise will materialise if only the choice of the 'cabal' for presidency which likely not Tinubu prevails. For this reason, he may join those who will not be in favour of the "Jagagban" ambition.

7. Emeka Ihedioha:

The experience of how the immediate past IMO state governor was "unjustly" pushed out of his is not something he will forget in a hurry. Also the manner at which the Peoples Democratic Party stood by him to bring justice is what will make him deeply involved in the affairs of the party. Am sure from that experience, Emeka will continually remain a friend of the party.

8. Peter Obi:

Am sure you pretty don't need much explanation in this case. The ambition of both politician is already a direct threat to each other. Peter Obi's vice presidential candidacy made him a part and parcel of the Peoples Democratic Party and has given him more prominence. Peter will even prefer a core northern from the PDP than to identify with Bola.
