IlekeHD:
The University of Ibadan (UI), in partnership with two American universities, on Wednesday, announced the discovery of a permanent cure for the sickle cell disease.

The cure which was described as less risky and with a potential to help over 5 million Africans living with the disease, was the outcome of a research carried out by UI in alliance with medical experts at the University of Illinois and the University of Loyola, both in Chicago.

Nigeria and other African countries can now heave a sigh of relief as the University of Ibadan in partnership with the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and University of Loyola, Chicago have discovered a permanent cure for the terminal disease.
The cure of the deadly disease, according to the Professor of Medicine, Victor Gordeuk, who is the Director, Sickle Cell Centre, University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and his colleagues, Prof. Damiano Rondelli, also from the same university and Prof. Bamidele Tayo, University of Loyola, Chicago this new treatment is done through bone marrow transplant and that it is less risky.
This was revealed yesterday at the University College Hospital, Ibadan after a three-day brainstorming session with other experts in the teaching hospital.
Unlike the other conventional method of stem cell transplant which exposes patients to radiation which could cause cancer, first blood and marrow stem cell transplant, BMT, is much more effective.

The experts who were flanked by the Chief Medical Director, UCH, Prof. Temitope Alonge, Dr. Titilola Akingbola, an haematologist and Dr. Foluke Fasola, said this stem cell transplant is a standard procedure for the treatment of many blood cancers in both adult and children.

He said: “With this chemotherapy-free transplant, we are curing adults with sickle cell disease, and we see that their quality of life improves fast within just one month of the transplant.

“About 90 per cent of the approximately 450 patients who have received stem cell transplants for sickle cell disease have been children. Chemotherapy has been considered too risky for adult patients, who are often more weakened than children by the disease.

“Adults with sickle cell disease can now be cured without chemotherapy — the main barrier that has stood in the way for them for so long. Our data provide more support that this therapy is safe and effective and prevents patients from living shortened lives, condemned to pain and progressive complications.”

“In the new procedure, patients receive immuno-suppressive drugs just before the transplant, along with a very low dose of total body irradiation, a treatment much less harsh and with fewer potentially serious side effects than chemotherapy.”

“ Donor cells from a healthy and tissue-matched sibling are transfused into the patient. Stem cells from the donor produce healthy new blood cells in the patient, eventually in sufficient quantity to eliminate symptoms. In many cases, sickle cells can no longer be detected. Patients must continue to take immunosuppressant drugs for at least a year.

The CMD, Prof. Alonge who called for support from government, philanthropists, donour agencies and corporate bodies like banks and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation for provision of equipment and completion of the sickle cell centre, described sickle cell as a disease of bone crisis which the patient suffers from head to toe.

He added that Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic disorder due to the presence of an abnormal form of haemoglobin in the red blood cells, called haemoglobin S (Hb S) instead of haemoglobin A (Hb A). Haemoglobin in the red blood cell is responsible for the transportation of oxygen in the body.

thank God u guys admit that some part of delta are Igbo territory ... We wouldn't force the other part to join us

Why do some of you guys relish lying? Where in the article did they remotely "admit that some part of delta is Igbo territory"? Even the portion you bolded/highlighted read "includes the whole of Delta State." How you were able to misinterpret/imply that to mean "some parts of delta are Igbo territory" defies logic. You people are hopeless.

I was going to agree with ya post till I saw the excerpt in bold. Don't you think that's an oxymoron - "blessing", "unplanned", and "sour taste in the mouth"?

What's stopping them from planning and how something that's unplanned be a blessing, when it'll lead to chaos and created another mess in a state that's meant to learn from the mistakes of Lagos and grow with its own identity?

Well, I agree. But I blame the resultant lack of planning on the military era. The military participation/intervention in governance was a curse on this country, especially in the area of development coz they couldn't be held accountable -- they retar.ded our development, they made no promises to the governed, were unstable in their decision-making, and lacked planning, e.t.c. Anyone could've easily foreseen the inevitability of Lagos development spilling into Ogun, but the leaders that ruled from '66 to '99 (with the exception of the short-lived 2nd republic) simply didn't care about such things.

I actually like Eko Atlantic a lot and I believe it's one of the reasons why I like Fashola a bit, ditto the metrorail - albeit I'm not his groupie and I still believe he was mediocre.

However, my only grouse with a project of that magnitude is the fact that they never tried to create an identity for the state. Lagos has no identity and when you're planning something as commendable as this within an axis - you've to plan ahead and make it statement, with an identity, so as not to suck developments away from other areas in the South West.

What am I saying? I'll New York and the Tri-state as an example. When Manhattan was built - the identity of New York became the financial district. After that, a lot of things moved to the two other states in the tri-state. However, with Lagos - those folks lack foresight and planning. And they just keep trying to fit everything into one state, while sucking developments out of the other states - thus making Lagos more snarled-up than it's meant to be.

I must say that I quite agree with the bolded. But I also think that Lagos is already peaking in terms of its capacity to attract ambitious developments of the size of the Eko Atlantic city due to land constraints, and this is proving to be a blessing to neighbouring Ogun state (as evidenced by Ogun's Industrial ascendancy). However this spill-over is unplanned which leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Ogun, IMHO needs a well-planned mega-city of its own, something akin to the now abandoned Lagos-Ogun megacity project.

Of course you can't answer. If Ogun was what you said it is, all roads would lead to Ogun. Face it man, outside Lagos, Yoruba land has no economic power.

Op pls u know nothing about Lagos
The first people to settle in Lagos where the awori.
They originate from Ogun state.
And FYI some LGA in Lagos where formally Ogun state e.g Somolu, yaba etc

Don't mind the OP and his closet land-grabbing cohorts. They don't know that Lagos consists 3 Islands and a part of the Mainland. Eko, Victoria, Apapa are Islands. The mainland starts from IDDO, carter Bridge end, Ebute Meta, yaba. The boundary was Jibowu, Idi-Oro.
To that extent, Fadeyi, Shomolu, Maryland, Anthony Ikeja, Mushin, Agege weren't parts of Lagos before it became a 'state'. These places were in the old Western Region with capital at Ibadan.

Those places though now in Lagos State should not be confused with the Lagos which ended at Jibowu, Yaba.

But then again, I wasn't expecting any different from them since they are mere traders who came to Lagos to sell market without knowing her history and now are cooking up fables. Smh undecided
