Does south east have land for farming? Only Niger state is bigger than the whole southeast in land mass.

Lol. Erosion has devastated most of the land they could have used for farming. Besides, their lands in those parts are not that fertile for farming purposes compared to other parts of Nigeria.

Op observation,
Why has Forbes not mention Obasanjo in its richest African's list if he makes 34m naira daily which is around 10 Billion per year.
Why have you mentioned only what Obasanjo makes per year and nothing was mentioned for others.

This info is fishy fishy and I see it as a cover up story to meet up with stolen money.

Forward your grievances to Leadership newspaper, the publisher of the list.

ABAH ADAH, PAUL CHIAMA

Before the advent of crude oil, agriculture was the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy. Then, the country’s economy thrived; food was available and affordable. People, therefore, did not go hungry, except in extreme cases occasioned by a serious factor.

With the oil boom era, the country and its people shifted attention from agriculture to oil and gas. Subsequently, graduates of Agricultural Science, Soil Science, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics etc., looked for white-collar jobs in banks and other seemingly lucrative areas, including oil and gas. Little did people know that those who remained in agriculture would today be raking in millions and billions of naira, as their products now grace both local and international markets.

This gives an impeccable signal that agriculture is, perhaps, more viable than other sectors. Also, it is an indication that well planned investment in agriculture is not a futile effort. It suffices that some Nigerian farmers have successfully built some shining legacies that need to be emulated and replicated. Most of them, as observed, are politicians. In this edition, LEADERSHIP Friday brings to the fore Nigeria’s top ten biggest farmers.

OLUSEGUN OBASANJO (OBASANJO FARM)

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is not only a retired army officer, former head of state and politician, he is also a successful farmer. He owns Ota Farm, which is also called Obasanjo Farms. The large farm was formally opened on October 8, 1979, a week after Obasanjo handed over power to a civilian administration on October 1, 1979. At inception, the farm took off as Temperance Enterprises Limited (Farming Venture). It later became Obasanjo Farms Nigeria Limited.

Obasanjo Farms indeed took off in grand style, indication that Nigeria’s former president meant serious business. This probably accounts for the growth, expansion, sustainability and consolidation witnessed in the evolution of the farm, considering how it started and where it is now.

The farm took off with two layer houses containing 100, 000 birds each and five broiler houses of 12,000 each, in addition to two feed mills of three tons per hour each. The large farm, which has up to 7,000 workers started with four bulldozer operators. Today, Obasanjo makes up to N34million daily from Ota Farm, which has branches in Ibadan and Igbo-Ora, Oyo State. This is no small earning for the former president whose farm has played a significant role in the development of agriculture and food production.

Obasanjo also uses the farm complex at the Agbe L’ Oba House, Ota, the Ogun State headquarters of the farm, to hold political and diplomatic meetings.

ABDULSALAMI ABUBABAKAR (MAIZUBE FARMS)

What makes General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) significant today in Nigeria and beyond is not just his successful military career or the fact that he willingly handed over power to a democratically elected government in 1999 to usher in the Fourth Republic. He has a stake in the Nigerian agricultural sector, being the owner of Maizube Farms Limited, which is helping to cater for the food needs of many Nigerians today.

Maizube Farms Limited is located at Km 26, Minna-Bida Road, Minna, Niger State, where General Abubakar is from. The 500-hectare multi-product farm has both livestock and crop sections and today, it is proudly one of the stable sources of crop and animal products upon which Nigerians depend for food and other uses.

Just as General Abubakar gives appreciable time to his peacekeeping mission across the African continent, so also does he give a great deal of time and attention to his Maizube Farms.

MURTALA NYAKO (SEBORE FARMS)

Vice Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd), the executive governor of Adamawa State may be more popular from the political perspective to many, but he is one of the most successful Nigerian farmers today. Few know that he is the owner of Sebore Farms in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State.

Murtala Nyako was born at Mayo-Belwa, to Alhaji Hamman-Yero, a notable merchant and Hajiya Maryam Daso who was keen on Islamic studies and herbal medicine, on August 27, 1943.

Nyako was born a cattle owner, as his mother had been allocated some cows for her offspring before his birth. So he started what has snowballed into an integrated commercial farm today as a cattle farm. Even throughout his career, in the Navy and in politics, Nyako was never distracted from developing and expanding his coast in the agricultural sector, the result of which is his success story today.

He commenced a sustainable crossbreeding programme of his local cattle with exotic superior sires in 1990 with very satisfactory results. He also got involved in the production of horticultural crops and his first commercial export of muskmelons to Europe, using a chartered aircraft, took place in January 1990. Nyako owns the largest mango farm in Nigeria, leading to his being popularly known as Baba Mai Mangoro (BMM). Exotic mangoes from his mango orchard of 50, 000 trees were first exported to Europe in 1993. He is also presently involved in the modern production of dates, passion fruit and bananas, pasture development breeding of Boer goats and farming.

Nyako is the president of the Horticultural Crops Growers Association of Nigeria, the Practicing Farmers Association of Nigeria and the Apex Farmers Association of Nigeria. He is the patron of numerous farmers’ commodity associations in the country.

USMAN DANTATA Jr. (ANADARIYA FARMS)

The young and enterprising Usman Dantata Jr., who is married to Rukaiya Indimi, daughter of multi-billionaire Borno businessman Mohammed Indimi, is the president/CEO of Anadariya Farms. The large poultry farm, which is located in Tiga, Bebeji local government area of Kano State, was started by the late business sage of Kano, Alhaji Usman Sanusi Dantata of the Dantata dynasty, in the 1960s. Anadariya Farms thrived well in poultry produce. For instance, it was noted for exporting poultry birds and eggs to Saudi Arabia twice a week using a Boeing 747 plane.

However, after decades of activity, the farm experienced some challenges and stopped operations until recently, when Dantata Jr. came on board and injected viability into the large farm. The CEO came with refined vigour, to ensure the farm maintains a successful track record. He has a background in investment and banking and was a trader of various commodities in Europe before coming back to Nigeria. He also has a certificate in feed production and broiler management obtained in North Carolina. Suffice it to say that he had equipped himself with the necessary training before stepping into the business.

This wealth of experience and pool of relevant knowledge may have been the reason for his decision to expand the services and operations of the farm to include a hatchery, production of broilers and layers, the production of feeds and the processing and sale of poultry products. Anadariya Farms produces above 3, 000 broilers weekly. This is one of Nigeria’s most viable farms, with its growing, diverse agricultural activities.

SIR JOSEPH I.A ARUMEMI-IKHIDE (OJEMAI FARMS)

Another modern farm with high level of activity and making great impact within the nation’s agricultural space is Ojemai Farms Limited owned by Ojemai Holdings. The farm, which is located in Edo State and owned by Sir J.I.A. Arumemi-Ikhide, the chairman of Arik Air, was established in 1984 with interest tilting towards livestock production. It took off as a local producer of pork and turkey meat. However, as years past by and business expanded in the farm, there was the need for expansion of scope of operations.

This led to new interest in production of broiler, catfish, fish fingerling and other forms of animal produce. The farm has grown to become one of the biggest farms in Nigeria and one of the nation’s prides in the agricultural sector.

ARINZE ONEBUNNE (JOVANA FARMS)

Prince Arinze Onebunne is the successful managing consultant and CEO of Jovana Farms, located in Mushin, Lagos. Onebunne specialises in the farming of animals such as grasscutters (greater cane rats), rabbits, quail, antelope, guinea pigs and fish, and so on. His high profile level of animal farming has taken him to over 30 states in Nigeria and to other countries as a seminar facilitator, advocate, training personnel and empowerment speaker.

The founder of Jovana Farms is also at the vanguard of modern fish and livestock farming in Nigeria, which is considered a fast growing and lucrative subsector of the nation’s economy today. With his vast experience and engagement in training and mentoring prospective animal farmers, he earns millions of naira not only from sales of animal products, but also from consultancy charges. Onebunne also carries out feasibility research, site survey and farm construction projects, as part of his professional services.

DR OLATUNDE AGBATO (ANIMAL CARE SERVICES KONSULT)

Dr Olatunde Agbato, a veterinary doctor, is the founder and president/CEO of Animal Care Services Konsult. Agbato, a graduate of the University of Ibadan (UI), became a viable player in the agricultural sector with the establishment of the company known commonly by its shortened name, Animal Care. The company has interests in commercial poultry production, commercial livestock feed milling, aquaculture, manufacturing, and procurement and distribution of animal health products. The company also undertakes provision of expert services for people with interest in animal farming, but who lack the know-how.

Animal Care was founded in 1979 and is located in Ogere Remo, Ogun State. The company concentrates majorly on poultry and veterinary services. It has continued to grow and has a subsidiary called Funtuna Farms, which is a poultry farming operation unit. Furthermore, it has a fish farm operation unit.

Agbato has over the years distinguished himself as a veterinary doctor cum farmer. He is a fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria; fellow, Farm Management Association of Nigeria; member, International Egg Commission, and has received many awards of recognition. Agbato is, indeed, one of the farmers who have sown under the sun and can now reap their harvests.

ABDULLAHI ADAMU (NAGARI INTEGRATED DAIRY FARM)

Nagari Integrated Dairy is one of the farms currently being operated in the country on a commercial level. It is reputed to be one of the largest single integrated dairy farms in Africa. It covers 1,200 hectares of land and has 7,000 Holstein cattle. In view of the quality of the products it churns out, the claim that it is among the top suppliers of high quality farm and dairy products in Africa is justified.

Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State and now a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is the man behind Nagari Integrated Dairy Farm. Although his fame on the political scene has overshadowed his agricultural exploits, Abdullahi can be described as an accomplished farmer. The success story of Nagari Integrated Farm is the result of the enterprising nature of this farmer, lawyer, engineer, technocrat and consummate politician.

Over the years, Nagari Integrated Dairy has invested in research and development, and in state-of-the-art dairy farming technology. The company has developed its own proprietary dairy farming expertise and methodologies. This has made it a benchmark for the efficient production of high quality dairy products.

ALHAJI WAHAB IYANDA FOLAWIYO (FOLAWIYO FARMS LIMITED)

Folawiyo Farms Limited, located on Yinka Folawiyo Avenue, Apapa, Lagos, was incorporated on October 4, 1985. It carries out integrated agricultural production, with branches in several states in Nigeria. It is owned by renowned business tycoon, philanthropist and the Baba Adinni of Nigeria, the late Alhaji Wahab Iyanda Folawiyo.

In matters concerning agriculture, Folawiyo Farms stands tall in all aspects. They are into livestock farming, fish farming, flour milling, agro-chemical production and distribution, agricultural consultancy, development and engineering, production and supply of agro-pesticides, farm tools, fertiliser services, horticulture, and so on.

Folawiyo’s journey to greatness began back in 1957 when he founded Yinka Folawiyo and Sons Limited, an import and export business empire that includes holdings in shipping, banking, construction, agriculture and energy. It is therefore not out of proportion to say Folawiyo’s business concerns traverse the entire length and breadth of the Nigerian economic terrain.

PETER ADENIYI (ANU-OLUWA FARMS)

Mr Peter Adeniyi, perhaps, did not understand fully the fortunes he was sowing to harvest when he founded Anu-Oluwa Farms in Ibadan, the ancient capital city of Oyo State. The farm, which has special interest in poultry and egg production for the Nigerian market, has become one of the largest farms in Nigeria.

The farm also sells livestock feeds and materials, table eggs, day-old chicks, point of lays, fish and fish fingerlings and livestock vaccines. Adeniyi is one of the most successful farmers in Nigeria.

Two Nigerians and Kenyan dancer arrested with cocaine, heroin at Lagos Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Tuesday arrested a female Kenyan dance at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos with banned substances concealed in school bags.

The suspect, identified as Odhiambo Samira Johnson, 42, was arrested for being in possession of four blue parcels of white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine, weighing 5.345kg.

The Kenyan is among three persons arrested on Tuesday by the anti-narcotics agency in Lagos.
The other two suspects, who are Nigerians, claimed to be automobile parts dealers based in Uganda.
They were identified as Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu, 41, and Ndubuisi Offormadu Innocent, 49, and were caught importing 6.250kg of cocaine and 1.490kg of heroin into the country.

The NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mitchel Ofoyeju, who confirmed the arrest and seizure yesterday, said that the total weight of the drugs seized from the trio was 13.085kg, comprising 11.595kg of cocaine and 1.490kg of heroin.

According to Ofoyeju, the NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Hamza Umar, who personally supervised the interrogation of the suspects, said that they were apprehended while trying to smuggle the illegal drugs into the country.

NDLEA preliminary investigations revealed that the Kenyan-born Johnson departed Bujumbura in Burundi en-route Nairobi, Kenya to Lagos on a Kenyan Airways flight before she was picked up by operatives of the agency during screening of passengers.

Confessing to the crime, Odhiambo said, “I am a professional dancer in Kenya. I was given the school bags in Bujumbura by a friend to deliver in Nigeria. When I got to the airport in Lagos, the customs searched my luggage and found the drugs”.

Chinedu, who hailed from Anambra State, boarded Ethiopian Airline flight from Kampala, Uganda en-route Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Lagos.
He confessed: “I have lived in Uganda for two years. I am married with two children. I came to Nigeria to attend my brother’s wedding ceremony. While I was preparing to leave Uganda, my friend gave me a bag to take to his brother who lives in Nigeria. Unfortunately, the drug was detected inside the bag”.

Innocent, who hailed from Abia State, in his confession statement, claimed that he was a victim of circumstance.
He said: “I went to a friend in Uganda to lend me some money but he gave me the option of drug trafficking. I decided to give it a trial for the very first time and it turned out this way. I was promised 3,000 dollars but I am very sad now, because I am missing my wife and four children. I have lived in Uganda for 18 years”.

Chairman/Chief Executive, Ahmadu Giade, said that the NDLEA was making significant progress in drug control.
“In spite of the new tactics adopted by drug barons, the NDLEA is still intercepting drugs. Ordinarily, Uganda and Kenya are not known to be source countries for cocaine and heroin but the suspects were unable to evade arrest due to the diligence of our officers”, he stated.
Mr. Giade added that all the cases are being investigated and urged members of the public to report suspected drug traffickers to the nearest NDLEA office.

NDLEA discovers Illicit Drug Labs in Anambra

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Amadu Giade, yesterday disclosed that the agency has discovered three clandestine laboratories used for illegal mass production of methamphetamine, an illicit drug.
Giade revealed that the illegal drug factories were detected in Akubuezem Nnewi, Anambra State, while the owner, a suspected drug kingpin, Chukwunwendu Sylvester Ikejiakwu, a.k.a. Blessed, has been arrested by NDLEA operatives.
Giade made this revelation in Lagos while briefing journalists on the recent successes of the agency. The NDLEA boss stated that Ikejiakwu is also the leader of an international drug trafficking syndicate that recruits and sponsors drug couriers to China, Malaysia, Turkey and Italy, among other countries.
He added that sufficient evidence had been gathered on the suspect to ease his prosecution.
Giade, who described the arrest as the latest outstanding operational success recorded by the agency, added that “NDLEA apprehended the suspected leader of the drug syndicate in his country home at Ozubulu after 13 months of intense surveillance.”
He expatiated: “The 37-year-old suspected drug kingpin was found to be deeply involved in unlawful exportation of illicit drugs and unlawful assembling, as well as running of methamphetamine production laboratories in the eastern part of Nigeria.
“He shuttles between his country home in Ozubulu, Nnewi and No. 2, St, James Close, Ajao Estate, Isolo where he resides in Lagos for his drug business.”
Giade said that the agency equally uncovered that the suspect is the group managing director of the Blessed Group of Companies.
“He hides under the cover of motorcycle parts business in running a drug cell that has international affiliation. His companies include Blessed Benita Global Limited, Ideal Motorcycle Company Limited and God’s Special Enterprise Limited. He specialises in recruiting and sponsoring drug couriers to China, Malaysia, Turkey and Italy. He also pays his couriers an average of $5,000 per trip,” he stated.
During a search on one of the laboratories at his Nnewi house, 2.615kg of liquid methamphetamine was found in a yellow plastic jug and 250grammes of crystallized methamphetamine concealed in a white transparent polythene bag, , the NDLEA chief disclosed.
Others are containers of iodine, acetone, hydrochloric acid, weighing scale, masks and hand gloves among others,” the NDLEA boss added.
Also recovered from him was the paraphernalia for drug concealment similar to the ones seized from drug couriers at the airports and land borders. These include an electronic weighing scale, assorted artefacts, laptop bags, motorcycle parts, air compressors, bus and truck mirrors, araldite and Atiso paint, processed brown envelopes and impulse sealer. Others are transparent packing nylon and carbon paper, tower foil paper, needles, threads, super glue and many more.
The suspect has two Nigerian international passports and one of Ghana, all bearing his photographs with different names. The NDLEA is investigating over 16 bank accounts belonging to Ikejiakwu in different banks. He was said to have a Toyota Venza with vehicle registration No AAA 18 BP, a Peugeot 406 with vehicle registration No FST 587 AS, a Q5 Audi 4-Runner with vehicle registration No EPE 546 CF and a Toyota Sienna SUV with vehicle registration No KRD 399 CG.
He was also alleged to have bought a piece of land at No. 21A, Joy Avenue, Ajao Estate, Isolo, Lagos in 2009 at the cost of N25 million and built on it in 2012 a three-story building estimated at N90 million. He also bought a property at No 2, St. James Close Ajao Estate for N17m and built a five-bedroom duplex on it at the cost of N25m.

NDLEA Arrests 236 Drug Suspects in Anambra

By Charles Onyekamuo

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said that it arrested 236 suspects dealing in various drugs like cocaine, Heroin, Cannabis sativa and psychotropic substances in Anambra State in the last six months.

The state Commander of the Agency, Mr. Sule Momodu who made the disclosure in Awka during a programme to mark this year’s United Nations Day against Illicit Drug Abuse and Trafficking, said that out of this number, 214 were males, while 22 were females.

He also said that 22 of the suspects had been convicted, adding that 283.031kg of hard drugs were seized.

The drug situation in Anambra State, he said, had not only become very worrisome but quite alarming, and stressed the need for governments at all tiers, families, religious organisations community leaders, and school authorities to take up the responsibility of creating the awareness and counselling young men and women on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking as a direct complement to the efforts of the Agency.

The Agency, he said, has been taking its enlightenment programme on the dangers of drug intake to the people and schools in the state through bill boards, quiz contests and publication.

The Agency’s interest he said was not solely on those already smoking cannabis sativa or sniffing such drugs as cocaine or heroin or drinking a mixture of local gin and marijuana known in local parlance as “Monkey tail”, because it was believed that this social category are sick and needed medical attention, but those who were yet to be co-opted into the act should be prevented.

He said research has confirmed that Cannabis sativa or marijuana contains about 400 types of chemicals which were all dangerous to health, adding that the chemicals in marijuana fight and gradually destroy vital organs like the kidney and liver and cause permanent brain damage in addicts.

The chemicals in marijuana, he further explained, lead to memory loss in the victims, and for most women who abuse these drugs, they find it difficult to conceive when they marry or at best give birth to deformed children, while the men lack the ability to produce quality sperm healthy enough to make their wives pregnant.

To the students who indulge in drug abuse, Momodu said it could permanently ruin their lives because it could lead to loss of memory and failure in their examinations.

He said that the recent discovery of a clandestine laboratory for methamphetamine production at Nnaka, Orumba North council area of the state has added a new dimension in the state’s drug problems as the state now plays the role of the three tiers of production, transition and consumption of illicit drugs.

NAFDAC declares billionaire fake drug suspect wanted, arrests printer, others

Saves two Nigerians abroad from execution

FOR possessing several warehouses where counterfeit medicines are stored and for counterfeiting medicines, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Tuesday declared one Mr. Keneth Okereke wanted.

According to the agency, Okereke has been on the run after he was discovered to possess three major warehouses containing counterfeit drugs valued at about N1billion.

Briefing journalists on the development Tuesday, NAFDAC Director General, Dr. Paul Orhii stated that Okereke nearly overran the police officers that tried to arrest him with his car before fleeing to unknown destination.

The DG, however, stated that a manhunt has been launched for the fleeing suspect, as security operatives within the country and at border posts have put on his trail.

Meanwhile, the agency has again saved two Nigerians from execution in China and Malaysia where drug trafficking attracts capital punishment. At the same time, anti-narcotic officers at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) Enugu, apprehended four suspected drug traffickers in connection with unlawful importation and exportation of illicit drugs that tested positive for cocaine, amphetamine and cannabis with a total weight of 25.25kg.

Also, the agency also yesterday paraded Mr. Victor Okeke-Chinonyeluma for the forgery of NAFDAC’s, Nigerian Customs Service’s (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service’s (NIS) and various banks’ documents; and the quartet of Mr. Tochukwu Michael-Ozala, Mr. Ifeanyi Okoro, Mr. Peter Nwannwbuife and Mr. Nnaka Christian for counterfeiting Codrux Codeine cough syrup and Coflin cough syrup in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Orhii added that Okereke, who is also known as Agama, resided at House 3, Ameze Street, off Magodo Road, Shangisha, near Magodo, Lagos, before taking to his heels.

The NAFDAC DG stated that the following counterfeit medicines had been discovered in Okereke’s illegal warehouse: “Tarivid 200 milligramme (mg) tablet, Augmentin 625 mg tablet, Proviron tablet, Novasc tablet, Glucophase 500mg tablet, GSK hologram for loparex, Ciprotab (antibiotics), unlabelled injections, Lexotan tablet (for treating anxiety), Septrin packing material, Ampiclox packaging material, and Cytotec-200mcg (misoprostol) tablet,” which is used to start labour, induce abortions, prevent and treat stomach ulcers, among other drugs.

Orhii said because of Okereke’s heinous crime, the Agency had declared him wanted. He implored members of the public with any useful information that may lead to his arrest to get in touch with the nearest NAFDAC formation, the police or the other security outfits. “We assure members of the public of utmost confidentiality in this regard,” he said.

On Okeke-Chinonyeluma, Orhii said that the agency has been on the trail of the suspect since 2013 for “forging stamps for Option Freight International Limited (a clearing company) to facilitate the clearance of 1 by 20 feet and 1 by 40 feet containers of herbal drugs and herbal tea imported by Tianshi Health Products Company Limited,” adding that investigations revealed that Option Freight International Limited sublet the clearing job to Truth Okey Cargo Nigeria.

Orhii explained: “It was in the course of processing the clearance of the consignment that Mr. Victor Okeke-Chinonyeluma was contacted by a staff of Truth Key to forge the stamps.”

When arrested, Okeke-Chinonyeluma, the NAFDAC boss said, was found to illegally possess the following sensitive documents: NAFDAC import permit forms (I unit), 14 packs of Entry for NAFDAC regulated product for different companies, large quantity of Bill of Lading form, international passport belonging to Mr. Awunor Steve Emeka, forged letter from D/C (revenue recovery) NCS, Apapa Command to the Managing Director of APM terminal Apapa for the release of a container, large quantity of Union Bank of Nigeria custom revenue receipt, copies of First Bank Custom revenue receipt, copies of Skye Bank Pay-in form duty collection, among others. Orhii said the suspect shall be charged to court.

But Okeke-Chinonyeluma told the media that he was a clearing and forwarding agent before he was arrested.

Speaking on other four, Orhii stated that, “Okoro, who is a printer prints the fake packaging materials of the counterfeit cough syrup for Michael-Ozala and his associates who manufacture the counterfeit products.” He added that the counterfeit products were often released into circulation by the trio of Michael-Ozala, Nwannwbuife and Christian “who sell these dangerous products in the market.” He said all the suspects shall be charged to court.

Agreeing to the crime, Okoro said he was misled by his business colleagues into believing that they were into genuine business.

He, however, urged the agency to sensitise printers under the Association of Professional Printers of Nigeria so that other printers would not fall victim of the law.

In a release signed by Head, Public Affairs, Ofoyeju Mitchell, two of the drug suspects Okafor Chidimma Deburah, a 30-year-old professional dancer was going to Malaysia with 3.450kg of amphetamine hidden in jeans trouser while Utobo Prince Davies Chidiebere, 33-year-old trader was found with 17.800kg of cannabis hidden inside bitter leaf on his way to China. The remaining two suspects were arrested while returning from Brazil. They are; Nwachukwu Nwadi Victor, 45, found with 2.200kg of cocaine hidden inside a music player and Celestine Okoye Ugochukwu, 40, who hid 800 grammes of cocaine inside the handle of his luggage.

NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Ahmadu Giade called on stakeholders to treat drug control programmes as top priority since it involves life. “Let me make a passionate appeal to stakeholders to give priority attention to drug control because it has to do with life and death. The two suspects going to China and Malaysia would have died prematurely if not for the vigilance of officers. Besides, the lives of addicts who use the drugs are also endangered. We need public enlightenment because while we are intensifying narcotic checks what of those that took drugs from other countries. This is a serious challenge and we must contribute our quota” Giade stated.

NDLEA commander at the Enugu Airport, Nsikak-Abasi Udoh said that all four arrests were made during routine checks. According to Udoh, “those arrested include a dancer, two traders and a factory worker. They were randomly intercepted during screening of Ethiopian Airline flights. The suspects have provided us with useful information for further investigation. The command will charge them to court soon”.

In her statement, Deburah who hails from Imo State said that she was promised the sum of 3,500 dollars. “I am a dancer. I was broke and needed money. I have been approached on many occasions to smuggle drugs but I turned down the proposal. They paid my return ticket and offered me 3,500 dollars. The drug was concealed in jeans trousers. I thought that I could earn some quick money in few days” Deburah stated.

Utobo Prince Davies Chidebere said that he needed money for the shipment of his goods from China to Nigeria. “I am a trader, I bought some goods but I have no money for the shipment. A friend in China told me that if I can smuggle cannabis to China, I can earn good money for the shipment of my goods and extra money for myself. I never knew that they will detect the drug because it was carefully hidden” Utobo who hails from Ebonyi States told investigators.

Nwachukwu Nwadi Victor, a factory worker in Brazil said that he bought drugs for ten thousand dollars in Brazil. “I am a factory worker in Brazil. I had family problem in Nigeria to settle so I decided to buy cocaine with 10,000 dollars. I would have made over 300 percent profits if I had succeeded in bringing the drugs. The drug was packed inside a music player, yet the officers detected it,” Nwachukwu stated. He hails from Anambra State.

Celestine Okoye Ugochukwu had everything carefully planned but not good enough to go undetected. “I smuggled drugs because I needed money. The drug was hidden in the handle of my luggage. I am just unfortunate because I had a good plan. I do not know what went wrong but such is life,” Celestine stated without remorse. He hails from Anambra State.

Mr. Nwoye, who hails from Ukpommili Village in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, said he wanted to sell the cannabis in China and use the proceeds to buy goods.

Another suspect, Samuel Anele, a commercial tricycle rider aboard a flight to Bombay, India, was arrested with 4.892 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, the NDLEA said in a statement Wednesday.
Mr. Anele, 45, and other suspects were arrested for offences ranging from concealing illicit drugs in their luggage to ingesting the drugs, according to the NDLEA said.

“Life is not fair to me. Every day it is one problem after another and the money I earn is not enough,” said Mr. Anele, from Ichi village, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.
“It was frustration that made me to smuggle drugs. They promised me that the drug has been properly hidden and that when I return they will pay me the sum of one million naira.

“At the airport, my bag was searched and the drug detected. Now I am now left alone to suffer.”
The other suspects, Emmanuel Chukwuebuka, was caught with 1.293kg of cocaine on his way to Istanbul, Turkey; and Eric Ukaeji was found with 1.408kg of cocaine on his way to Hong Kong.

Mr. Ukaeji, 43, who hails from Ajali in Orumba Local Government Area of Anambra State ingested cocaine weighing 1.408 kilograms.

“They promised to pay me 5,000 dollars on delivery in Hong Kong which I would have used to buy goods.”

This is one of those Omanbala "billionaires", caught red-handed -- these guys play in the big leagues compared to other states. cheesy

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday said it had arrested a suspected drug baron who specialised in sponsoring drug couriers to China, Malaysia, Turkey, Italy and other foreign countries.

Addressing journalists at office of the agency at Ikoyi, Lagos, the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, said the 37-year-old suspect, Sylvester Chukwunwendu, was also a producer of methamphetamine in Anambra State. Giade said that Chukwunwendu was arrested at Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State based on intelligence report received by the agency on April 23, 2014.

The suspect was said to be deeply involved in unlawful exportation of illicit drugs and running a methamphetamine production laboratory in his house at No. 2, St. James Close, Ajao Estate, Isolo, Lagos. Chukwunwendu, aka Blessed, was alleged to be the owner of the laboratory and leader of an international drug trafficking organisation which recruits and sponsors drug couriers to foreign countries. Giade said that sufficient evidence had been gathered to ease the prosecution of the suspect.

He said: “The Special Enforcement Team (SET) of the agency has concluded a model investigation of an international Drug Trafficking Organisation (DTO), after 13 months intense surveillance on the suspect before he was finally arrested.” According to the chairman, the suspect hides under the cover of different businesses in running his drug business with international affiliation.

Some of his companies include Blessed Benita Global Limited, Ideal Motorcycle Company Limited and God’s Special Enterprise Limited. He added: “Some of his couriers to China, Malaysia, Turkey and Italy were usually paid an average of $5,000 per trip.” It was further gathered that the suspect hired one Raphael, a professional methamphetamine cook, to work for him.

The said Raphael is paid N500,000 for his service and N700,000 for the purchase of precursor chemicals per production cycle. Items recovered from the suspect’s residence include 2.615kg of liquid methamphetamine found inside a yellow plastic jug, 250 grams of crystallised methamphetamine concealed in a white polythene bag and some laboratory equipment. Also recovered are two Nigerian international passports, one Ghanaian passport all bearing Chukwunwendu’s photographs, with different names.

There are also one measuring scale, six heating filters, six giant conical flasks, industrial tubes and cups of sodium hydroxide. Giade disclosed that in another development, 23kg of methamphetamine was intercepted along Badagry Expressway, Lagos, en-route Cotonou. The suspect, identified as Azubike, is standing trial at the Federal High Court, Lagos in respect of the seizure. In his confessional statement, Azubike said he was sponsored by Chukwunwendu.
