PoliticsLeap Year : 8 Interesting Facts About The ‘LEAP DAY ’ You Should Know! by odutolasodiq(op): 3:22pm On Feb 29, 2016
Every four years, with some exceptions, an extra day gets added to the month of February,
resulting in that year being 366 days instead of the normal 365 . For 2016 however which is a leap
year, the leap day is Monday, February 29 , 2016 . The origin of the leap year as it ’s known today
dates back to the 16 th century and was adopted to resolve a lag created by the Gregorian
calendar , the standard calendar for most of the world for the past 500 years. You probably don ’t
know how it came about , why February was chosen for it , what people born on leap days are
called and many more . To put to rest the confusion, INFORMATION NIGERIA brings you 8
interesting things about the day you should know…
1. February 29 is a date that usually occurs every four years, and is called leap day. This day is
added to the calendar in leap years as a corrective measure , because the Earth does not orbit
around the sun inprecisely 365 days.
2. The reason for the leap year comes down to the earth’ s revolutions around the sun. The exact
time it takes the Earth to make a full orbit, known as a solar year , is about 365. 242199 days , or
365 days, 5hours , 48 minutes and 46 seconds ,according to Time and Date.
3. The extra time is about the equivalent of an extra quarter of a day, meaning that every four
years, the calendar has an extra day to make up for.
4. The first civilization to recognize the leap year was the ancient Egyptians , according to Info
Please. The Romans later adopted the practice into their calendar and designated Feb. 29 the
official leap day.
5. This is not a perfect system because if the leap day rule was simply observed every four years,
it would add an additional day to the calendar every 128 years. Therefore, the rule was tweaked a
bit to exclude years divisible by 100, unless also divisible by 400 . The change has allowed the
calendar to skip a leap year every few hundred years.
6. All the other months in the Julian calendar have 30 or 31 days, but February lost out to the ego
of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus. Under his predecessor Julius Caesar, February had 30 days
and the month named after him – July – had 31 . August had only 29 days. When Caesar
Augustus became Emperor he added two days to ‘his ’ month to make August the same as July.
So February lost out to August in the battle of the extra days .
7. People who are born on February 29 are referred to as “leaplings ” , or “leapers” . In non - leap
years, many leaplings choose to celebrate their birthday on either February 28 or March 1 , while
purists stick to February 29 for the occasion.
8. For centuries, astrologers believed children born on leap day have unusual talents , unique
personalities and even special powers . The poet Lord Byron was born on a leap day, as were
rapper Ja Rule and footballer Darren Ambrose.
Did you know that there is a belief in Nigeria that leap years have a greater risk of death and that
calamities were bound to happen in such years

PoliticsOutbreak Of A Deadly Disease On OAU Campus! Management Warn The Public! by odutolasodiq(op): 9:39pm On Feb 28, 2016
ALERT! ALERT!! ALERT!!!
This is to inform the general society of Obafemi Awolowo University and by extension the whole
community of Ile-Ife of the outbreak of the new unknown, fierce, slowly killing disease.
Report has it that this disease has been diagnosed to be caused by a virus, but non of the lab
scientists has been able to pinpoint the virus.
Dr Ilesanmi, the resident doctor of health centre said. . .
" The virus observed by our lab scientist is neither similar in structure nor function to any of the
viruses ever known. In the past five days we've admitted 75 patients with similar cases, though
our infrastructural facilities failed us to manage the large number. 65 of these patients are female
while just ten are male, so we are guessing that this disease is gender sensitive.
We implore the whole of OAU students and staffs as a whole to please bear with us, as we are
working towards better services, as far as this deadly disease is concerned. The symptoms
includes: headache, stomach ache, body weakness, irritation, fever, vomiting (in some cases),
sore throat, loss of appetite. Though we don't know the preventions yet, but we believe that by
proper hygiene, we can reduce the spread of the disease. . ."
It is recommended that during this period, we have our bath at least twice a day, if not thrice, wash
our hands with soap and water, and keep our food properly.
We pray that God saves OAU from this deadly disease. Send this message to all your friends in
OAU and Ile-Ife, you might be saving a life.

Students of one of Nigeria’s oldest universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, have expressed concern about increased cases of illness among students.

A visit to the institution’s largest student hostel, Awolowo Hall, showed that many of the rooms had at least one student who had fallen ill. One of the rooms, which has 8 occupants, had five of them already fall ill this past week.

An average of five students stay in a room in the hostel officially although the figure is often up to a dozen due to the shortage of student accommodation.

The increased cases of illness has been attributed to the ‘harsh’ weather conditions while some students have attributed it to poor sanitary conditions of the hostels.

Some students also alleged that they were given expired drugs at the institutions health centre when they visited after they fell ill.

One of the students who just recovered from his illness, Adebayo Benjamin, said, “I was feeling dizzy, vomited , had high temperature and headache , I have not felt this way before.”

Another student, Abiodun of Management and Accounting department, said his illness prevented him from preparing for the university’s examination which begins early March.

A visit to the health centre of the institution also showed that an average of three doctors attended to the scores of students who thronged the hospital.

Some of the symptoms complained of by students include high temperature, vomiting, dizziness, stomach ache and headache.

One of the doctors on duty attributed the increased illness to the harsh weather and lack of rest by students. Other health workers, who confirmed the increase in number of students appearing at the centre, however. said the situations in the hostel may have made the conditions worse. The hospital’s Chief Medical Director was not on seat and could not be reached on phone.

Already, the university’s Association of Campus Journalists, ACJ, has blamed the hostel conditions for the illness.

“The drainages at the back of our hostels have not been cleaned for about one month thereby breeding mosquitoes that have spread the strange virus,” Omole Isaac, the ACJ spokesperson said in a statement. “Our advise to students is to keep their rooms clean as we have not witnessed this kind of development before.”

Some of the students, however, blamed their colleagues for the poor sanitary conditions of the hostels.

“The way hostel facilities are used by students can be annoying, little precautions need be taken although this strange fever is not controllable,” a student, Samuel Olatunde, said,

Another student, Awe Peter, asked the university management to ensure proper cleaning of the hostels.

The spokesperson of the university, Olanrewaju Abiodun, however allayed the students fears.

“There is no strange fever in Obafemi Awolowo University,” he told PREMIUM TIMES. “Most of these allegations are unfounded. In fact I have visited hostels and I saw students watching football. Are these the sick students? We have over thirty five thousand students in Obafemi Awolowo university and if some microscopic few are sick then why such panic.”

Mr. Abiodun hinted that some of the students might be stressed due to preparations for upcoming examination in the school.

“The Chief Medical Director has even said there is no strange virus in Obafemi Awolowo University. We are having normal examination tension, so all is well,” he said.

The University Joint Christian Mission, UJCM, has fixed Monday for special prayers against the “strange” fever.

BusinessThe Truth About Naira And Dollar Exchange Rate by odutolasodiq(op): 10:12pm On Feb 24, 2016
Please let me explain to those of us who don't understand Economic terms. Dollar has not increased since Buhari became president.

1. Dollar is not our currency so dollar should not be our business.

2. Our problem is not d government but our problem is our importers and consumers.

3. Naira has remained at 197 naira to 1 dollar since Buhari became president.

4. Buhari has promised not to devalue the Naira and he has maintained that promise.

5. Both at CBN and at interbank rates, dollar has remained 197.

6. However because we are too lazy to produce what we use in Nigeria we import even toothpicks and matches.

7. Buhari does not like d importation of luxury goods because luxury goods is d reason for most corruption, that is why he banned 41 products from having access to forex.

8. However when Nigerian importers insisted on importing those 41 products, FG asked them to find their dollar at d BDCs parallel market also known as black market.

9. And to discourage the pressure Nigerians are mounting on the Naira just to get dollars for importation, CBN banned DMBs from selling dollars to BDCs.

10. To survive the pressure of excess dollar demands, BDCs resorted to sourcing for dollars from neighbouring countries through illicit money laundering routes.

11. Because of the risks faced by BDCs to source for dollars, and because of the increase in demand for dollars by importers because China just resumed from their business holidays, BDCs keep increasing the price at which they exchange dollars to naira and now it is 400 naira to 1 dollars.

12. However that does not mean that govt has changed the exchange rate because if our genuine importers go to CBN and fill Form M to import raw materials for local production, they will get dollars at 197 naira each.

13. So the problem is that we love to consume luxury foreign products yet we are too lazy to manufacture them here.

14. For example u will see a dull girl using iPhone 5 without even knowing simple physics and computer engineering part of how that phone was produced.

15. I want Buhari to ban every foreign product from Nigeria until Nigerians learn to produce and use Made in Nigeria products.

16. Let us stop complaining about dollar as if dollar has become Nigeria's currency.

17. It is even bad enough that most of those complaining about the high exchange rate of dollar do not have 1 single dollar in their purse.

PLEASE USE MADE IN NIGERIA PRODUCTS...God bless 9ja.
