Guyman02: I didnt see any AK 47 guns and bullet proof vests with those guys. Probably they are ushers in the church which you find in virtually every church to maintain orderliness. Even the pope uses security to protect himself and I dont see nothing wrong with having security afterall most churches in Northern Nigeria have Soldiers and Police gurading them. next topic please.

Genius100: Does anyone here have any proof that she really is a widow? Nigerians are infamous for telling all kinds of lies to get out of trouble after disobeying the law

Whether she is a widow or not, she is a Nigeria. If your governor tells you go and die, then what stops foreigners from treating us like shit in their embassy and our own country.
Politics / Re: Go And Die - Oshiomole Tells A Widow! by ofilispeaks(m): 9:22pm On Nov 28, 2013
pmc01: I know many will disagree with my stand, but I still make bold to state my view to the matter.

While the Governor be scolded for letting his emotions get the better of him, it is really provoking that someone comes up with the cheap excuse of 'being a poor widow' to do what is wrong. It is obvious the woman was fully aware of the wrong she was engaged in, hence the struggle to bail herself out with an emotional excuse of being a struggling widow.

The woman was not willing to accept responsibility for her actions, and that might have really gotten on the nerves of the Governor (he is human too). From comments read, some people have attested to the man's humility and all that, so it is only fair to give him the excuse that he was really provoked. Of course, it is obvious he meant the statement figuratively (even though it seems he went too far than expected of him).

I also wish to state here that we should put a hold on our emotions and judge this matter rationally. It is normal that anyone guilty of a crime would seek to exonerate himself/herself, but does that justify the crime? There are many poor widows all over (assuming she is truly a widow) that do not stay on the wrong side of the law and give room to this kind of embarrassing scenario, so what is the fuss about? Every offender could claim to be a widow, widower, orphan, e.t.c., should they all then be pitied and the society allowed to become chaotic?

Fact is the Governor was harsh, but the woman gave room for that. She was simply trying to blackmail the Governor into setting a bad precedence and the man had to take a firm and resolute decision, having in mind that the people he employed to enforce the law were watching to see whether he will compromise or not. She should just have admitted her fault and plead for mercy, rather than play the emotional card. The truth is everyone in that state will now be on their toes and be more inclined to obey the law strictly, to avoid been a 'scape-goat'. We know how Nigerians have to be 'forced' to do what's right.

It is sad that indiscipline has become a way of life for us here and so many supposedly enlightened ones here have decided to approach this matter with emotional sentiments, rather than an objective outlook.

What is wrong is wrong, widow or no widow!

N.B.: Whoever thinks I am here to defend my 'principal' is on his or her own. I am not responsible for your wrong perception of me. Thank you!

Like Oshimole said...go and die with you long explanation. As a governor you don't talk to your people like that. Period. All this wan is long story.

We marshal our top graduates from all across the nation and then we put them in a camp where things barely work and call it a national orientation. I take that back...mandatory national orientation - where our graduates are mandated to live in substandard conditions, get yelled at and shouted at by soldiers, and are made to put up with all sorts of deplorable conditions in hot over-crowded rooms, with toilets that barely work...that is, if there are toilets at all, in which case our top graduates are probably slinging shiitt over the wall. And we call in national orientation - orientation to what? shiitt?

Nairaland / General / Why Akpos Is Smarter Than You Think by ofilispeaks(m): 2:48pm On Nov 14, 2013
Some time ago, in 1999, when CD players had just come out, very few people had them. Thus it was a cool thing to be seen holding a music CD instead of the soon-to-be-obsolete cassette tapes. I remember the story of a boy in secondary school who, after listening to a CD disc, tried to turn it over so he could listen to the other side. When he did that, everybody in the room laughed and called him “razz” – how could anyone possibly think of turning over a CD to listen to the other side? Everybody knew that only one side of the CD could be played. After all that was what we were taught, and that was what the cool kids knew.

But in March 2004, a group of record companies, including industry giants like MJJ Productions Inc. and EMI Music, developed a dual CD disc that could be played on…guess what…both sides. What was laughed at in 1999 in a small room in Lagos was heralded as a ground-breaking discovery in March of 2004 in America! Irony?

NOTE: This is a Chapter Excerpt from How Intelligence Kills get the book here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1296689049/how-intelligence-kills-the-inappropriate-truth

I would say so…because the uncool razz boy, as we would have called him…had actually thought of something revolutionary, but instead of being congratulated or encouraged, he was mocked. How many times does this happen across our nation? In my opinion, I would say far too many times. We have to put a stop to that; instead of laughing, we should say, “Hmmm, that is an interesting idea…why can’t the other side of a CD be played?” But we are too cool for that, so we laugh…repeating the same old mistake of not looking past the current reality or pushing the barriers.

Another obvious truth: “You can’t fit a square peg into a round hole.” Or can you? Again, this statement is flawed…yet we repeat it every single day…”you can’t fit a square peg into a round hole,” “you can’t fit a square peg into a round hole,” “you can’t fit a square peg into a round hole.”

But the truth is you can fit a square peg (and even an octagonal peg) into a round hole; all you have to do is make the hole bigger or the peg smaller…regardless of the shape, it will eventually fit.

NOTE: This is a Chapter Excerpt from How Intelligence Kills get the book here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1296689049/how-intelligence-kills-the-inappropriate-truth

And the truth is that our children’s minds are like the square pegs that are constantly being forced into the rigid round hole of our educational system. But it can and should be the other way round; our educational system needs to expand its round hole to accommodate our kids’ square-pegged imaginations. Sadly this is not the case, as our kids are the ones who have to limit their imaginations to fit our rigid educational system of memorization.

This has to change…because our most intelligent and creative minds are going through school believing they are stupid, when in fact they are brilliant. As Albert Einstein says “Everybody is a Genius. But If You Judge a Fish by Its Ability to Climb a Tree, It Will Live Its Whole Life Believing that It is Stupid!” And thus like fishes climbing trees, only a few of our children are able to make it through our educational system. This is doubly unfortunate, because it is not just the individuals that suffer, but society as well. The reason is that when memorization is the core determining factor of success in school…it ends up defining the society.

Just ask any Nigerian to give you road directions and you will be given a series of names back-to-back: go down this road, then turn at this corner, and then go here, and if you get lost just stop and ask for directions. The fact is that our road networks, like our educational systems are built on a system of memorization; you either know the directions or you don’t. There is no logic to navigating the roads…if you get lost…ask for directions or ask jeeves Jesus.

But in the western world, if you ask for directions, you are told to head north or south and then to take exit number X or Y. Even the exits are numbered according to the number of miles between exits. It is a very logical system; if you are on I-35S (interstate 35 south) you know that you are on an interstate road heading south. If you get lost, you can figure out how to get back on track. That is not to say that logic will get you out every time and that you will never have to ask for directions. But you do not need to fully memorize a road network before you can navigate it independently. Their roads were probably built by people who sucked at memorizing. So instead of giving the roads names, they give them directions and numbers. If you are headed to the southwest part of a city, you probably can take almost any road that is labelled south or west and figure out your way. This is how our educational system should be developed – aiming at the end goal. Students should be able to figure out things logically for themselves. If they learn to do so early on, as they mature and when they become leaders, they will be able to create systems that are flexible yet functional.

So what do we do? How can we reform our system? Let’s start by addressing the way we react to students’ “crazy” answers.

Remember the saying…there is no such thing as a stupid question. Well let’s extend that into our classrooms and let our students know that there is no such thing as a stupid answer. Because by so doing, we create a conducive environment where students are free to think and speak without being afraid of being wrong. When this happens, students will be able to take risks and think beyond the textbooks. This is how innovation is born; innovation comes from people who question the norm…people who say: Why can’t we make internet wireless? Why can’t CDs play on both sides? Why can’t a helicopter be used to cut trees? At first their ideas might seem ridiculous, but over time they just might evolve into reality and even become the status quo.

We need to ensure we are teaching students that it’s okay to come up with crazy ideas. And we need to let students and teachers know that it is absolutely not okay to laugh at others’ answers.

As well, we need to train teachers to not search simply for the right answers. Anyone can do that; what they need to do is analyze the wrong answers students give…even the ridiculous ones. Take this physics question for example:

Steve is driving his car. He is travelling at 60 feet per second and the speed limit is 40 miles per hour. Is Steve speeding?

Now this question requires the student to convert both speeds to the same unit so that a simple comparison can be made as to whether Steve was travelling above 40 mph or not. But in the national bestselling book F in Exams, the student simply writes: He could find out by checking his speedometer.

Now imagine this happening in a typical school setting. The student would not only get the answer marked wrong; he would also be reprimanded either with yelling or severe flogging for his audacity to write such an answer. But his answer, albeit it in a weird way, is correct. He has thought beyond the question. Because in reality if Steve wants to know if he is speeding or not he can simply check his speedometer…after all most speedometers have dual units on them!

NOTE: This is a Chapter Excerpt from How Intelligence Kills get the book here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1296689049/how-intelligence-kills-the-inappropriate-truth

This takes me back to a classic Akpos tale:

TEACHER: If I give you four balls of puff-puff in your hand, and I collect all of them back from you, what will be left in your hand?

AKPOS: Na oil naa

In truth, Akpos shows an ability to think beyond the obvious question, to not only focus on the mathematics but on the reality of the situation. And that is that if you have 10 puff puffs in your hand and all are taken back, then you would not only have zero puff-puffs left; but you would also have lots of oil on your hands. And Akpos, as silly as we may think he is, showcases a type of special intelligence that we can should embrace.

A teacher that is not focused only on right or wrong will see beyond the rote answer and realize that the student has a unique way of thinking. But even more importantly, the teacher may figure out that he needs to write his questions more clearly

All in all, if a nation Nigeria is to grow intellectually and start creating, it will need students that can think for themselves, students that can challenge teachers, and students that exhibit flexibility of thought.

Data from the World Bank shows that the last time a patent was registered from Nigeria was in 1990. That was a long time ago. We need to change that by giving students the power to think outside the box. Because the real world is not a perfect question, and as such has no perfect answers. As long as a person’s mind is flexible enough to try out multiple answers/solutions, they will always be able to answer the world’s toughest questions. Let’s gut the memorization and inspire creationization [sic] (just invented that word, but hey….flexibility).

Education / Aluu4: Never Before Seen Pictures And New Court Date by ofilispeaks(m): 7:11am On Nov 13, 2013
On October 2012, I had the privilege to meet with Jane Toku-Mike the mother of Lloyd…just several days after her son had been fatally beaten and torched for a crime that he did not commit. I was nervous about the meeting, I mean what do you tell a mother after losing her son in such a brutal manner? But we spoke and there was one thing she kept saying. And that was that she and all the other parents wanted people to know who their children were, that they were innocent, that they had dreams, that they had aspirations, that they were just like us…you and me.

So last month roughly a year after our first meeting, I asked Jane Toku-Mike if she had pictures of her son that I could use for a project I was working on … you can imagine my surprise when I received not just one but several dozen pictures of Lloyd and the other 3 children. Pictures scanned from a brochure titled Four Friends that was made in honor and remembrance of the aluu4. A brochure filled with never before seen pictures of the children, as babies, in church, in school on visiting day. Just normal everyday pictures with words from family describing their sons.

And I just had to share it, not to stoke another endless debate about the hopelessness of Nigeria or whose fault it was that aluu4 happened. But rather to do something to ensure that the aluu4 victims get justice and to remind the parents that we the people of Nigeria have not forgotten. But more importantly that we will not forget. We will keep fighting for their sons, until they get justice.

And we can fight this fight. All they need from us is to keep their children in the news cycle so that the courts know that we are watching and that we will not be silent if justice is stolen from them.

So feel free to share these pictures, this article, these words, even steal from the article, but get the word out. You can start with publicizing their November 14th court case at High Court 21 in Port Harcourt. If you stay in Port Harcourt, go out there and support, take pictures. Report the news, post it on your blog, ping it, whatsapp it, instagram it, let it spread. Its the little we can do.

Enjoy the below pictures...I was moved and I am sure you will too...

Literature / The Confessions Of The Boy Who Told The Truth by ofilispeaks(m): 10:47am On Nov 06, 2013
I confess that I am far from perfect. I don’t go to church as much as I should and I sometimes fall asleep when the pastor tells us to close our eyes for prayers. Also I don’t tithe. In fact the last time I tithed was a long time ago…I instead prefer to give my money to the family that is about to get kicked out of their wretched rundown building because of rent issues rather than one of those mega-churches trying to build the newest state-of- the-art church in Ikoyi.

I confess that I curse more than is acceptable by Nigerian standards, or international standards for that matter. I curse when NEPA takes light and when people piss me off. I confess that my cursing confession is not a good image for my profile as an African writer and motivational speaker but I can’t give a shit. The situation is too god darn frustrating sometimes.

I confess that I am honest to a fault…that I speak the truth when others are sleeping in a quagmire of bullshit. I confess that my honesty has gotten me in trouble with friends and co-workers. I confess that I can’t stop being honest, that I am no angel but at the same time I am no demon. I confess that if I see shit happening…I will yell “look at that shit happening!” I confess that I love FELA and Chinua Achebe and I wish that I could have hung out with them. I confess that, contrary to popular belief, the Biafran war was a travesty in Nigeria. I confess that I get pissed off when the country acts like the war never happened. I confess that I often fantasize about how life would have been if Biafra actually seceded. But then I realize that my parents would never have met and I would never have been born…so scratch that!

I confess that everything in this book will be written with the utmost honesty. I confess that people might not like what I write but I honestly don’t give a crap. I confess that I will write with all efforts to be as objective but as candid as possible. I confess that all the sketches in this book were drawn by me, but I confess that I got stole sketch ideas from sites like gapingvoid.com and sethgodin.com.

I confess that, similar to my sketch ideas, I stole some of my research ideas from books like There Was a Country and Start Up Nation and from watching hours and hours of TED talks.

I confess that I have no idea what accent I have. In America I sound Jamaican and in Nigeria I sound American. I confess that I will punch the next person who asks me if I speak Igbo and then shakes his head when I begin to speak because my accent sounds funny…and then I find out his children speak the Queen’s English and nothing else (oh there is a chapter on that)!

I confess that I don’t see the big hoopla around gay marriage. I mean I could care less what two consenting men do behind closed doors. Except if the men happen to be politicians deciding how to steal “our”…I take that back…Niger Deltan’s oil money. I confess that I am less worried about two men screwing each other and more worried about a politician screwing an entire nation…over and over again!

I confess that this book (I confess you can get the book here) will be one of the most candid and honest books you would have read in a long time. I confess that if you are not ready to get your head shit-smacked with the book, you should drop it, ‘cause it would change your perceptions about a lot of things. But then again, I confess that this book will make you laugh, so you should not really drop it.

I confess that I often write crazy chapter titles to shock people into reading my books. I confess that some of my crazy chapter titles include “Corruption is Like Sex” and “Our Dangerous Addiction to Intelligence.”

And I confess finally that I am blessed with a great family and friends that I sometimes neglect because of my introverted nature. But I do love them dearly and pray that I can make time so we can all spend time together.

These are my confessions and this is me. I hope you like it…but then again the goal is not for you to like it but to be moved by it.

There are 20 people in the world on record with hyperthymesia. I think I am the 21st! #ofilix

I know, what the heck is hyperthymesia? Well let's just say I can remember every single day of my life since birth! #ofilix

Like everything! Give me a date, any date and I will tell you exactly what I wore, whether it rained and how many times I sat down. #ofilix

I have had this extraordinary condition ever since i was a child. In fact...I can remember being pulled out of my Mum's vagina. #ofilix

It was at LUTH hospital and there was no light, just candles. #ofilix

You hear about babies born with bibles, rosaries and korans...well I was born with an incredible memory. #ofilix

I know what you are thinking. "Boy you must be lucky!" But I am not, because with the good memories...come the bad ones... #ofilix

Remembering every detail profoundly...means I also re-experience the pain as well. Like the morning of October 22nd. to be contd... #ofilix

Just joking. #ofilix

October 22nd, 1993. My father a proud okada driver. One of the only men who felt pride in driving an okada (sigh) #ofilix

As he does every morning, he was dropping me off at my primary school. #ofilix

I clung to his back as I always did. As he navigated the rough and rugged...almost non existent roads of Port-harcourt. #ofilix

I clung to him tightly as only a young 10 year old would. We were almost at the school gate when we got stopped by police officers #ofilix

They wanted to inspect my Dad's papers. His okada papers. I guess they did not know my dad. Meticulous was his nick name #ofilix

All his papers were neatly packaged and stapled together. Nothing was amiss. The officers searched and searched for something. #ofilix

That missing thing that officers mysteriously search for. That excuse to seize a bike and extort money. But nothing. #ofilix

He handed the papers back to my Dad and we began heading towards school. We had almost reached school when I heard "Oga!" #ofilix

"Oga come here" "why is your tail light broken?" #ofilix

My Dad put the okada to a screeching halt in near disbelief. "Broken tail light? but the light still works" he responded. #ofilix

But the officers were having none of that. They had found their morning breakfast. Their Milo and Tea. And it was my Dad. #ofilix

Before I could say NEPA. We were surrounded by 3 officers and thrown off the bike. But my Dad...he hung on. #ofilix

He held on to that bike, like his life depended on it. Because it did. That was all our family had. That one bike. #ofilix

But did the officers care? No. They just pulled the bike, dragging my Dad along with it...hoping that he would let go. #ofilix

But he didn't. And then it happened. First a push, and then a punch, and then a kick. But my Dad still held on. And they continued. #ofilix

Beating, punching, trying to separate my Dad from his bike. As the entire school watched and I stood there...ashamed and angry. #ofilix

I would like to say my Dad fought of the police officers like Jackie Chan. Or some good Samaritan came to help. #ofilix

But this was Nigeria. Shit like that never happens. My Dad lay there beaten, bruised and humbled. Beaten like a dog. #ofilix

And for what. A cracked tail light? a freaking tail light. #ofilix

Thanks to hyperthymesia...I remember every second, every detail of that event. In fact it plays in my head over and over again. #ofilix

My dad, the one who always preached honesty, hardwork and respect. But what did he get in return? Bleep honesty! #ofilix

On the flip side, my memory has gotten me through school easily. I mean with a Nigerian system that encourages cramming...i excel. #ofilix

I just memorize my class notes and regurgitate it during exams and am done. A's all the way. #ofilix

That's why i got the highest score in the national common entrance exam and got a full scholarship to Adams Private Academy. #ofilix

Under normal circumstances the son of an okada driver will not dream of being here. But I am. #ofilix

Quite frankly I find the school boring, the teachers fake & students...weird. Its no surprise,I skip class a lot for more fun things #ofilix

and no, not chicks or smoking or all that kind of stuff. I like putting stuff together...gadgets. #ofilix

I once retrofitted my Dad's okada to run of vegetable oil, after reading about alternate energy in a book. made a lot of money. #ofilix

But no one believed us...they actually laughed at us. O well...their loss. #ofilix

Today i skipped English class. I can't stand that teachers fake accent. Always wanted to sound more british than James Bond. #ofilix

I need to find a pressure transducer...to finish up my latest device... It would be a crazy device...my greatest invention yet. #ofilix

The only thing is how do I get back to school without getting caught? to be continued. #ofilix

Part III (Who Am I?): My name is Chichi...and I hate my bleeping bosoms! Yes my bosoms! #ofilix

Sometimes, I just wish I could cut them off and put them in a DHL package and mail them back to God! #ofilix

I can't walk into a room without them being the center of attention. It's always them...not me. Never me. #ofilix

I can't lie, they have gotten me favors in the past. But they weigh me down more than they pull me up. #ofilix

I long for that feeling. The feeling of being invisible. The feeling of walking into a room without a 1000 people starring. #ofilix

Or accidentally grazing my chest =/ #ofilix

And my curly hair and half-caste skin don't help fend the attention. Both products of the fusion between my Dad and Mum. #ofilix

My Dad a white Oil&Gas expat, who knocked up my Mum a Nigeria..in a Luxury hotel on the Island. At least it was a luxury hotel..sigh #ofilix

If you ask my Mum she would tell a different story. She likes to act like she is above prostituting but that's what she is. #ofilix

And me...the convenient mistake. Under normal circumstances I should not be here. I should be aborted...unknown...unborn. #ofilix

But luckily my Dad was loaded. So my Mum kept me as her bridge to success. She swears she loves me....but I think not. #ofilix

The only thing she loves is the fact that she can financially exploit my Dad with me. At least I am alive... #sarcasm #ofilix

I wish I was dead. My life is a bleeping depressing dump. I smile as a decoy to cove rup the emptiness inside. An abused child #ofilix

Abused physically, emotionally and ... #ofilix

The first time it happened I was 12...but my bosoms were already 22! #ofilix

Too young to understand, too young to fight. So I just stayed there...like a b##% abused till he came or got tired. I can't remember #ofilix

He being one of my Mum's clients in her imaginary world of No-I-am-not-a-prostitute but yet bleeping all around the place. #ofilix

It happened so fast and left me scarred, physically and emotionally. Blood splattered over my bed covers...blood of innocence gone #ofilix

And my Mum. I tried to tell her the 1st time it happened. But my words were terminated with a slap and a.... #ofilix

"why is there blood all over your bed covers I just washed those sheets. Do you think I am your servant." and then another slap #ofilix

I kept quiet after that. I realized at that point...at 12d, that if I was to make it thru life. It will be me, nobody but me. #ofilix

People like to say the world has some good in it. But I think there are parts of the world that are filled with evil people. #ofilix

My classmates think I am blessed. They don't know about the suicide thoughts, the depression, the abuse. But yet I smile. #ofilix

To be honest, I can deal with the intimate abuse. I have become numb to it, one day I will be stronger, I will fight back. #ofilix

But what hurts the most is not having a father figure. He is too busy drilling for Oil in the ground & in the beds of luxury hotels. #ofilix

He must be good, cause he gets paid and look, he drilled inside my Mum and created me. #sarcasm #ofilix

At least I get some respite at my boarding school. Away from the turmoil, from the abuse just for a few days. #ofilix

I can't like its a nice school. At least my fake Dad knows the value of an education or maybe he is making up for his absence. #ofilix

He never fails to pay my school fees. But probably does not remember my birthday. How can he? #ofilix

Rumor has it that the day I was born, he was bleeping another woman. #ofilix

At least in school I am a celebrity. I take that back, my bosoms & hair are celebrities. I am just the limo that transports them #ofilix

But I act the part...the part of the limo driver watching all my bosoms fake friends smile. Like they actually like me. #ofilix

Even teachers get in on the action. Last week, the English teacher told me how great a writer I was. That's funny, I write like crap #ofilix

The English teacher loved it though & hugged me in a funny this-is-inappropriate-way. Did I mention, our English Teacher is female #ofilix

But it was hilarious seeing her face when I wrote about the student who killed an absive teacher with a fork. #wink #ofilix

I may be weak, but I have my way of fighting back. I don't think he will try that again. #ofilix
O did I mention, I got pregnant last year. No big deal thought, I handled it. Maybe if the guy was a rich expat I would have kept it #ofilix

But sadly it was the bleeping Physics teacher with his beat up Toyota Camry and fake smile. #ofilix

I swear that guy will Bleep anything with 2 legs, even an Ostrich. #ofilix

I would like to say he abused me..but I knew what I was getting into. I let it happen or did I? #ofilix

Sometimes I think the problem is that I smile too much. I keep everything inside...I need to get angry a lot more. #ofilix

But the last time I got angry, I almost killed someone. I promise I am not violent...just frustrated. #ofilix

It was 2 weeks ago. Another senior boy trying to act or lovey on me. I smile and try to move on, but this one will not agree. #ofilix

He became really aggressive and insulting. Call me a LovePeddler and my father a crook. #ofilix

I don't know what tripped inside, but I got really angry. Like a fresh anger, I just imagined myself crushing his head. #ofilix

But then I realized he was no longer yelling at me. He was just yelling and grabbing his head as blood came down his nose #ofilix

I was too terrified and confused...I just bolted out the room. #ofilix

"What does this mean?" my English Teacher yells. She is talking to the Daydreamer. #ofilix

That dude is always lost. I wonder what the Bleep he thinks about...and in the last few days he has been looking at me funny. #ofilix

Funny, because he is not starring at my bosoms, he is actually looking at me. Maybe he knows what happened. Maybe he saw #ofilix

What did I do? What can I do? Who am I? to be continued.... #ofilix
