There should be no petrol or diesel cars in city centres by 2050, the European Commission has proposed.

Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas also set out plans to shift half of "middle distance journeys" from road to rail, and to cut shipping emissions by 40%.

He said: "Freedom to travel is a basic right for our citizens. Curbing mobility is not an option. Nor is business is usual."

The proposal would cut carbon emissions by 60% and reduce dependence on oil.

Words that Sabotage Your CV!

Creating a winning CV is a feat of strategy involving focus, wording, design and content selection. To achieve a career marketing document that wins interviews, all areas of the strategy must be spot-on and consciously used in the most effective manner. One of the most common mistakes job candidates make when writing their CVs is not paying attention to strategy and word selection.

There are actually words that can have a detrimental impact on the effectiveness of the CV. When most job candidates write them, they don't consider word choice because they are primarily worried about getting down the basic information. Wording is critical and the wrong one can sabotage your CV.


The average agent and/or hiring manager sees hundreds of CVs from qualified candidates. CVs begin to look and sound the same to them. Here are some words and phrases to avoid:

Soft-skill descriptions
Job seekers feel they need to communicate their soft-skills to the employer because they believe they are the traits that make them unique, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Soft-skills are so common that recruiters pay no attention to them.

Phrases to avoid or severely limit:
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong work ethic
- Personable presenter
- Detail-oriented

Do not bore the reader to tears with these trite, overused and tired phrases. After all, no one will write that he/she takes long lunches, is lazy and argues a lot with peers. Hence, it is much more effective to write a description that is action-based and demonstrates these abilities rather than just laying claim to them. For example, rather than just stating you are an "excellent presenter," you could say "Developed and presented 50+ multi-media presentations to prospects resulting in 35 new accounts, totalling £300,000 in new revenues."

Age, health, appearance
Many seasoned job seekers are facing that scary time warp known as pre-retirement and fear age discrimination. They feel they can counter this perceived hurdle by giving a description of their age or health. But this can be death to a CV.

Phrases to avoid:

- Youthful
- Athletic
- Fit
- Healthy
- Mature

Additionally, unless specifically requested, there is no need to include personal details such as date of birth, marital status or whether you have children. This information is typically used to exclude candidates from consideration in the hiring process rather than include them. Unless the employer specifically asks, keep this information confidential.

Passive voice
Many people write in the passive voice because that is how we've been taught "formally" in school composition. The problem with the passive voice, however, is that it is just that passive! A CV needs to have punch and sparkle and communicate an active, aggressive candidate. Passive does not accomplish that.

Indicators of the passive voice:
- Responsible for
- Duties included
- Served as
- Actions encompassed

Rather than saying "Responsible for management of three direct reports" change it up to "Managed 3 direct reports." It is a shorter, more direct mode of writing and adds impact to the way the CV reads. On the flip side, whilst action verbs are great, don't overdo it.

I have actually seen:
- Smashed numbers through the roof'
- 'Electrified sales team to produce, '
- 'Pushed close rate by 10 per cent'


Take your time
A CV is a marketing document for your career just as a brochure is a marketing document for a product or service. Companies put careful thought and consideration into each and every word that goes into marketing copy and you should do the same in your CV. These words stand in your place with the employer and need to showcase you in a powerful way. In a perfect world, these things would not matter, but in the reality of job search today, they matter a great deal. Be wise - stop and give some thought to the words you choose.

A French plane has fired the first shots in Libya as enforcement of the UN-mandated no-fly zone begins. The target was a military vehicle, the French defence ministry said.

It came hours after Western and Arab leaders met in Paris to agree a course of action to confront Col Gaddafi.

"Our air force will oppose any aggression," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Earlier, pro-Gaddafi forces attacked the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

However, the Libyan government has denied launching any assault

'Stop the bombardment'

The French plane fired the first shot in Libya at 1645 GMT and destroyed its target, according to a military spokesman.

French planes also flew reconnaissance missions over "all Libyan territory", French military sources said earlier.

Around 20 French aircraft were involved in Saturday's operation, the Reuters news agency reports.

This campaign to enforce Security Council resolution 1973 has got off to a rolling start.

We do not know yet exactly who is going to be involved and indeed who will have overall command of the operation. But it is the French Air Force that has been in the skies first over Libya, conducting reconnaissance overflights during the course of the day and now firing the first shot in anger.

No details have yet been given by the French, other than that it was a Libyan military vehicle that was targeted. British Tornado and Typhoon aircraft have been readied at their home bases. A small number of Canadian jets have passed through Prestwick airport in Scotland on their way to the Mediterranean.

The US seems to be largely in a supporting role; it will provide what Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called "unique assets", probably satellite and other forms of intelligence-gathering and perhaps some highly sophisticated aircraft to monitor the battleground.

The immediate aim is to halt in their tracks the Libyan government forces moving on Benghazi.

Any Libyan government armour that has already reached the outskirts of the city could be stranded there as its supply chain across the open desert is vulnerable to attack.
French jets "destroyed a number of tanks and armoured vehicles", a defence ministry official told Reuters, adding that he could not immediately confirm the number.

Other air forces and navies are expected to join the French.

The US would use its "unique capabilities" to reinforce the no-fly zone, said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, warning that further delays would put more civilians at risk. However, Mrs Clinton said again that the US would not deploy ground troops in Libya.

A naval blockade is also being put in place, said Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. France is sending its Charles De Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Libyan coast, a military spokesman said.

In other developments:

Italy has offered the use of seven of its military bases which already house US, Nato and Italian forces
Canada says its fighter jets have now reached the region but will need two days to prepare for any missions
The new UN resolution authorises "all necessary measures" to protect Libyan civilians.

The international community was intervening to stop the "murderous madness" of Col Gaddafi, Mr Sarkozy said.

"In Libya, the civilian population, which is demanding nothing more than the right to choose their own destiny, is in mortal danger," he warned. "It is our duty to respond to their anguished appeal."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Libya's claims to have implemented a ceasefire were "troubling", the AFP news agency reported.

The lack of confidence was so great that he did not trust what the Libyan leadership was saying, Mr Ban added.

Russia regretted the decision by Western powers to take military action, a foreign ministry spokesman said. Russia abstained from the UN vote on the Libya resolution, but did not use its veto.

The rebels' leader had earlier appealed to the international community to stop the bombardment by pro-Gaddafi forces.

A jet also appears to have been shot down over Benghazi. A rebel spokesman was quoted as saying the downed jet was a rebel plane.

Reports from Benghazi suggest hundreds of cars packed with people were fleeing eastwards as fighting spread.

The United Nations refugee agency says it is preparing to receive 200,000 people fleeing the fighting, amid reports of hundreds of cars full of people heading for the Egyptian border, while others are attempting to flee on foot.

The first families had arrived at the Egyptian border, extremely frightened and traumatised, saying some of their homes have been completely flattened said UNHCR spokeswoman Elizabeth Tan.

However, the BBC's Ben Brown, who is at the border, says so far there are a handful of families, in addition to the migrant workers who have been there since the crisis started.

This attack is to mark the start of our promised campaign against the Nigerian oil industry. This attack and similar attacks on pipelines and flows stations which will take place within the next few days is a reminder to the Nigerian government and the general public not to take our threats for granted.

Onoja, Senate President David Mark's Opponent, Shot Near Otukpo Benue State

The senatorial candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Benue South senatorial district, retired General Lawrence Onoja, was shot today in a village near Otukpo, Benue state where he was billed to receive People's Democratic Party (PDP ) decamps to his party.

retired army general Onoja told SaharaReporters over the phone that he was shot before he could reach the decamping ceremony at Otukpo-Icho township near Otukpo where a PDP politician, Oko Iklagher and 3,000 decamped to ACN.

He claimed that armed men suspected to be PDP thugs shot him in the left arm while he was traveling in the same vehicle , an Ash-colored Toyota Prado Sports utility Vehicle-with "Young Alhaji", a popular businessman in the area who contested again Mr. Mark in the 2007 elections. Young Alhaji is currently the deputy goober candidate of the ACN in the state. he too sustatined some injuries from broken glasses from the vehicle.


Onoja is running against the current Nigerian Senate President and PDP candidate, David Mark.

General Onoja expressed concern about the activities of the supporters of the Nigerian senate president in their area. He state that two days ago, PDP thugs attacked "Hausa quarters" targeting ACN members who boldly display the party's broom emblem with the Senate president campaign vehicles openly used in harassing opponents.

Calls to Mr. Mark's phones were not returned as at the time of filing this report.
