PoliticsRivers PDP Invites Ortom For Projects Tour by Ohammadike(op): 10:38pm On Mar 27, 2017
As Prominent Nigerians from within and outside Rivers State, including Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, continue to visit the State and join Governor Nyesom Wike on projects tour, pouring commendations and satisfactory comments on the various developmental projects initiated by the current administration in the State, the Chairman, Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bro Felix Obuah, has extended invitation to the Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, for similar undertaking across the State. Ortom and Wike The PDP Chairman, while commending the Vice President, Prof. Osinbajo, other Governors, Senior citizens, religious and political leaders, who have made out time in spite of their tight schedules to come and see for themselves the developmental projects in Rivers State, particularly lauded similar visits by some All Progressives Congress, APC, Governors, who have demonstrated high spirit of patriotism and statesmanship during such visits and tours of completed and ongoing projects embarked upon by Gov Wike across the State. Bro Obuah noted that apart from the landmark peace and security in the State, which is largely a product of the various deliberate and committed efforts and successful amnesty programme of Governor Wike, Port-Harcourt, the State capital, and its environs now wear a new look, following the Operation Keep Rivers State Clean initiative of the current administration through the Rivers State Waste Management Agency, RIWAMA. In addition to this, Obuah maintained, infrastructural, human capacity and institutional development have been top priorities of the Gov Wike administration for which Rivers people, residents and business operators in the State are happy about. Bro Obuah however expressed grave concern over the insecurity leading to continued loss of lives of innocent citizens in Benue State under the watch of Mr. Ortom, noting that any government worth its salt should be able to provide security for lives and property of its citizens, a great feat that the Wike administration has achieved, even in the face of apparent distractions and politicization of insecurity by the opposition party in the State. The PDP Chairman believes that visiting Rivers State and embarking on tour of developmental projects will avail Gov Ortom the opportunity to tap from Gov Wike’s wealth of experience and success story. “This is a passionate invitation to Mr. Ortom, which should not be taken for granted”, Obuah insisted. “No man knows it all. If your style of leadership does not work, learn and adopt Gov Wike’s proactiveness in governance”, Obuah stated, while also commending the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike for the judicious use of the first tranche of the Paris Club fund from the federal government, even though it was meagre, compared to what was released to other APC controlled States. He listed some completed and ongoing projects across the three senatorial districts of the State to include the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo Unity Road, Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Sakpenwa-Bori Road, Ecumenical Centre, Federal High Court, Civic Centre, Dredging and Reclamation work at Ogbunabili/Nkpogu Location, Nkpogu Bridge, Trans-Amadi Road, Woji Akpajo Bridge, Slaughter Road, Port Harcourt Pleasure Park, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Rumigbo, Igbo-Etche road, Airport-Ipo-Omademe Road, General Hospital, Ahoada, Reconstruction of Edeoha-Ikata-Ochigba road, Ahoada-East LGA, General Hospital, Abua, General Hospital, Abonnema, General Hospital, Buguma, Zonal Hospital, Degema and General Hospital Omoku, Abonnema Link Road, Street and Traffic Lights, construction of New Jetties, amongst several others. “To end the pains of our brothers, sisters and fellow countrymen in Benue State, we call on Gov Samuel Ortom to visit Rivers State and tap from Governor Wike’s security and developmental projects concept and expertise,” Obuah stressed, appealing to him to stop the media noise and take governance seriously. Bro Obuah regretted that Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom is unable to pay monthly salaries of civil servants running into several months, after borrowing over N60 billion in 7 months.

PoliticsArmy Arrests Soldiers Who Brutalised Crippled Man In Onitsha by Ohammadike(op): 1:57pm On Feb 09, 2017
The Nigerian Army says it has identified and arrested two soldiers who allegedly brutalised a crippled man in New Market Road, Ontisha, in Anambra State.

The army in a statement released by 11.50pm on Wednesday said the soldiers had also been charged by their commanding officer.

A video showing the officers dragging and beating a crippled man for wearing a military camouflage gone viral on Wednesday

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.Gen. Sani Usman, said in the statement that the soldiers had been apprehended.

He said, “The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a video clip in which two soldiers were seen maltreating a physically challenged person for allegedly wearing a camouflage shirt.

“We wish to inform the public that the incident took place on Tuesday 7th February 2017, at Onitsha, Anambra State.

“In line with our zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conducts especially in relation to violation of human rights, we wish to further state that the soldiers involved have since been identified and apprehended.

“They have also been charged for assault by their Commanding Officer. Similarly, troops have been warned to desist from such acts that infringe on human rights and cast serious aspersions on the good image of the Nigerian Army.

“The public should please regard this ugly incident as an isolated case which is not true reflection of the Nigerian Army.”

PoliticsWe Won’t Allow 2baba To Hold Protest In Lagos – Police by Ohammadike(op): 5:29pm On Feb 02, 2017
The Nigerian police said on Thursday that they would not allow an anti-government protest planned in Lagos by music star 2Baba.

The popular artist, whose real name is Innocent Idibia, called on Nigerians earlier this week to march on February 6 in protest of the government’s handling of the country’s economic crisis.

“Information reaching us revealed that some hoodlums are planning to hijack the peaceful protest. As such, we won’t allow it to hold in Lagos,” Lagos police commissioner Fatai Owoseni told AFP.

“We know that 2Face does not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand,” Owoseni said.

In a video posted on his Facebook account Tuesday, 2Face urged Nigerians to come out in a “peaceful and articulate manner” for the march.
“The need for urgent solutions to the challenges facing Nigerians has become very clear,” he said in the video.

“Things are not getting better for the majority, we are still where we are, poor and desperate. I will no longer be quiet.”

It’s unusual in Nigeria for a celebrity to take such a vocal political position.

But when 2Baba floated the idea of a protest last month the idea quickly gained traction in a country frustrated by a galloping inflation rate and sluggish growth.

Nigeria’s fortunes fell with the collapse in the global price of oil, triggering a recession that has been aggravated by rebel attacks on oil infrastructure and controversial monetary policies, which have led to a debilitating shortage of dollars.

PoliticsN/delta Militants To Attack S/kaduna Disguised As Fulani, Says El-rufai by Ohammadike(op):
Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has said security agents are on the trail of those instigating crisis in the southern senatorial part of the state.

He also said investigations have revealed plans to use Niger Delta militants to disguise as Fulani to attack people in the zone.

El-Rufai who spoke during a media chat on Wednesday night in Kaduna, said he was aware politicians were sponsoring the attacks and were benefitting from the crisis, asserting that they would be arrested and prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.

The governor disclosed that plans were underway to establish two military formations in the Southern part as a way of ending the crisis, stressing that the state government got assurances of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Ministry of Defence and Chief of Army Staff on the request to site the military formations.

He said the proposed military formations would be in Fadan Karshi in Sanga and Kauru local government areas respectively to provide rapid response to acts of criminality.

The governor said that in the meantime, the presence of security personnel had been beefed up in the area to stem the tide of violence.

In a related move to address insecurity, the Kaduna State government yesterday held an emergency meeting with the state council of traditional rulers with a call on them to caution their people against crisis.

Speaking during the meeting, Deputy Governor of the state, Barnabas Bala Bantex who represented the state Governor Nasir El-rufai, described the killings and tension in Southern Kaduna as unfortunate, saying, “I will like to assure our people that the present leadership in the state has no secret agenda of pursuing ethnic or religious agenda. The bandits killing people in southern Kaduna and states like Zamfara are not doing it based on religion. They are criminals,” he said.

The meeting had in attendance the Emir of Zazzau, Emir of Kagaro, Emir of Birnin Gwari, Chief of Ninzo and Atta Adara, amongst others

PoliticsCourt Of Appeal Upholds Gov. Dickson’s Election by Ohammadike(op): 6:32pm On Sep 22, 2016
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on Thursday upheld the election of Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as governor of Bayelsa.
A former governor of the state, Timipre Sylva, had challenged the decision of the election tribunal that returned Dickson in the Jan.9 poll.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Olukayode Bada led other four justices to decide all the fives issues raised in the appeal against Sylva.

“I have carefully studied the issues raised by the appellant and found them to be frivolous and lacking in substance.

“The appellant had tried very hard to approbate and reprobate. This is not allowed in any of our statues.

“By his sheer participation in the Jan.9 rescheduled election for Southern Ijaw Local Government Area meant that he lost his right to raise any issue on the election of Dec.6, 2015 which was postponed,’’ he held.

Bada also said that The appellant was unable to prove the allegation of non-compliance to the Electoral Act, adding that he failed to discharge the burden of proof sufficiently.

The judge further said that the appellant was wrong to assert that the results from the aborted Southern Ijaw election was cancelled.

“Available evidence shows that no results were collated from the exercise as the poll was proven to have been marred by irregularities and mal-practices.

“The appellant was also wrong when he said he was coasting to victory if all the 120,000 eligible voters in Southern Ijaw were allowed to vote.

“This for us, was a mere wish as the appellant could have been sure of attracting majority of those votes,’’ Bada said.

On whether the Resident Electoral Commissioner was right to have cancelled the election, Bada said the Electoral Act gave the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the power to mandate any of its officers to do so.

“It is indisputable that the appellant and political party contested the rescheduled election on Jan.9. It was this participation that removed the rug from their feet. It had made them bare footed.

“In other words, since the appellant voluntarily participated in the rescheduled election, he cannot now turn around to condemn the exercise in law.

“He cannot be allowed to blow cool and hot at the same time,’’ he said.

The judge also held that: “no matter the enormity of the allegation of non-compliance, the appellant is still very much required to prove it. He has substantially failed to do so’’.

Bada said the appellant also failed to convince the court that the first respondent (Dickson) did not score the majority of lawful votes.

“With the resolution of all these five issues against the appellant and made in favour of Dickson, the appeal is hereby dismissed and parties are to bare their costs,’’ he held.

The court, however, dismissed two cross appeals brought by PDP and the governor, describing them as counterproductive actions.

On July 26, the Election Tribunal in Bayelsa held that the supplementary election that took place on January 9 was proper and valid.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa had challenged the return of Dickson in the election, saying the entire process was untidy.

The party attributed the victory of the governor to manipulation of results announced by INEC.

The APC also questioned the cancellation of results in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area viewed as their stronghold.
