The Senate Thursday opened investigation into alleged military invasion of Ogoni land, River State. Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions charged with the investigation following petitions on the matter took testimonies from some interested parties. Four Ogoni villages were alleged to have been invaded by the military. The Civil Liberties Organisation and the traditional ruler of Mene Bua-Yeghe community in Ogoniland, Chief Barinaada Gbaranee, defended their separate petitions against the Nigerian Army before the committee. Gbaranee, claimed that the unlawful occupation of his territory and three other communities by soldiers, started on February 22, 2016. The Monarch noted that the armed military personnel who allegedly invaded his community also invaded the house of a former Niger Delta militant, Mr . Solomon Ndigbara. The armed military men, he claimed, vandalized his cars and buildings without just cause. He told the lawmakers that prior to the attack, the soldiers had allegedly arrested Ndigara’s wife and his siblings. He said;”The military occupation of Ogoniland, escalated on 23 February to the extent that the army engaged themselves in the brutal killing of men, women and children numbering about 12. “The sporadic shootings against the harmless and defenseless peace loving people of Ogoniland, led to the displacement of natives of even neighbouring towns as Zaakpon and Wiiyakara communities, in fact even extending up to Babbe Kingdom. “Consequent upon this, all economic activities in Ogoniland especially Bori town and other adjoining villages have been grounded to a halt. “Men, Women and children have deserted their homes and are taking refuge in the bush and forest due to heavy presence of the military personnel, patrolling in armoured cars with sophisticated weapons.” He noted that Ogoniland had remained peaceful prior to the military invasion. The Monarch asked the senators to use their legislative powers to stop the killings and tension. He said, “The continued exposure of vulnerable men, women and children, certainly is beginning to cause hunger, sicknesses and diseases, the resultant effect Is sudden death.” He noted that members of his community were still scattered in the bush due to fear and apprehension. The South-South Zonal Chairman of the CLO, Mr.Chinedu Uchegbu, in defence of his petition, claimed that the military invasion affected four communities in two local governments in Ogoniland. Uchegbu noted the people of Yeghe, Zaakpo, Bori, and Babbe in the Gokhana and Khana council areas were violated by the military invaders. He listed those allegedly killed by the soldiers to include, Nwibari Mbu; Bariture Ziibo; Lesi Ledee (a pregnant mother); Saturday Gbarazia; Kelechi Nwafor and his brother Linus Nwafor, among others. The CLO leader also listed those arrested and still being detained to include Messrs Gambo Festus; Dennis Macaulay Nbinna: Ndikwa Tekpe; Nwii Peter and two others from Tai local government area of the state. He claimed that Messrs Gabriel Ndigbara Piabari; Richard Ndigbara; Mrs. Kate Ndigbara; Bob Nkue; and Smart Deedom, among others are still being held by the soldiers. He also claimed that Messrs Chikwodo Nwankwo; and Azubuike Iga among others, sustained various degrees of injury and currently on admission in the various hospitals in the local government. Ukaegbu described as worrisome, a situation whereby a federal government agency which ought to guarantee security for everybody in the society and which ought to maintain law and order, is being associated with plots to cause insecurity” Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, assured that his panel would ensure a thorough investigation into the allegation. Anyanwu however said that for a thorough investigation to be seen to have been conducted, the committee needed to hear from the military that is being accused of invading the communities. He said that the committee would invite the military to get their own side of the story before presenting a report to the Senate in plenary. http://thenationonlineng.net/senate-opens-probe-military-invasion-ogoni-land/ |
OWERRI – Imo State Government has described as “most unfortunate and grossly embarrassing”, the attempt by members of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to disrupt Governor Rochas Okorocha’s speech at the world-famous Chatham House, London, where he was invited to deliver a speech. According to a press statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, the government said it was worrisome that members of IPOB that have always given the impression that they are fighting for the course of Igbo, would decide to storm the Chatham House to cause trouble at an event the Governor honoured to deliver a speech on the way forward for our society. “Indeed, if IPOB apostles would embarrass an Igbo leader of Governor Okorocha’s status in London, then, their claim that they are fighting or agitating in the interest of Ndigbo should be taken with a pinch of salt by those who had hitherto, believed them”, Onwuemeodo reasoned. He further argued that all over the world, groups fighting for one reason or the other presumably for their people, do not loose sight of what certain leaders in the areas represent and accord them the needed respect, no matter what they hold against such leaders. “The IPOB action at Chatham House was not only embarrassing to Governor Okorocha as an Igbo leader, but also to Ndigbo in general both at home and in diaspora and indeed to all men and women of goodwill”, Onwuemeodo said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/imsg-lashes-ipob-members-in-london/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari is to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington DC in three weeks’ time. A preliminary list of delegates shows that he will be accompanied to the three-day event, to be hosted by President Barak Obama between March 30 and April 1, by three governors and six Ministers. Also on the preliminary list prepared by the presidency are 11 principal officers and a 23-member Advance team that includes a medical doctor, Protocol officers, State House media, bodyguards and a cook. The final list is expected to be higher when technical experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as other Ministries, Departments and aides of relevant political office holders are added. An average presidential trip costs Nigerian taxpayers between half a million and $1.2million in travelling expenses alone. The last visit by President Buhari, to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, gulped over $3m at a time when the exchange rate was nearly N400 to $1.00. President Buhari had also been scheduled to pay a state visit to China this month, but that has been postponed until further notice. The 2016 Nuclear Security Summit will be the fourth to be hosted by President Obama, the first of them in 2010. They are aimed at addressing the threat of nuclear terrorism to global security through international cooperation to secure vulnerable nuclear materials, break up black markets, and detect and intercept illicitly trafficked materials http://saharareporters.com/2016/03/09/president-buhari-attend-nuclear-security-summit-washington-end-march

Hundreds of survivors of the Agatu killings in Benue State who were taking refuge outside the Oturkpo palace of the paramount ruler of Idomaland, the Och’ Idoma, have been chased away in what is double jeopardy for a lot of them The refugees said they were chased on the orders of His Royal Majesty, Elias Ekoyi Obekpa. The palace of the monarch wouldn’t comment on the allegation, with an official saying only a certain refugee committee can do so. The committee could not be reached for days. Women, children and the elderly are among the over 400 survivors from Aila community who fled the massacre by Fulani herdsmen, walked for days in groups, before getting mass transportation assistance to Oturkpo where they took shelter in a pavilion outside the royal palace. Weeks ago Aila, Adagbo, Akwu, Odejo, Ugbui and Okokolo communities in Agatu local government area of Benue State came under armed attack as invading Fulani herdsmen killed helpless children, women and men alike. Over 200 lives were lost in the first killing spree just as hundreds of houses, yam barns and other farm produce were burnt. While some of the fleeing villagers sought refuge in Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps in Ojantele, Ataganyi and Ugbokpo, all in Apa Local Government Area of the state, the about 400 refugees from Aila journeyed further to Oturkpo where they have more ethnic affinity. But after days in the palace shelter, the refugees awoke one morning to a rude shock. In what would become a second displacement, palace authorities ordered them to vacate the shelter immediately. They were pushed out of the pavilion into the street and left there to their own devices by guards who reportedly wielded horse whips. A bewildered Deborah Onuminya, a mother of four, who still did not know whether her husband was dead or alive told PREMIUM TIMES that the only reason given by the palace authorities before they were ejected was that the refugees were making noise and disturbing the peace of the royal father. She said they were marched out of the shelter without alternative arrangements for the displaced people. “We had nowhere to go. We were left to wander in the streets. My nightmare suddenly began all over again,” Deborah, said fighting back tears. News of the eviction of the Agatu refugees from the Och’ Idoma’s pavilion spread like wildfire across Oturkpo with motorbike taxi operators bearing the sad tale from one part of the town to another. According to a 41-year old refugee, Shaibu Ahmadu, who said he was a former police officer, the ordeals of the refugees lasted for hours until a local politician, Obande Obeya, came and moved them to one of his compounds. It was in Obeya’s compound that PREMIUM TIMES met some of the displaced people. Bus drivers, food sellers, shop owners and just about everyone else in Oturkpo expressed condemnation at the action of the royal father. But in a clarification of the circumstances leading to the eviction, Andrew Obeya, leader of the Idoma Progressive Movement (IPM), told PREMIUM TIMES the refugees were never chased away by the Och’ Idoma. “The news spread across town and when I heard it, I took it upon myself to investigate,” Mr. Obeya said. “What I found out was that the Och’ Idoma was not even in town the day it happened. Because the pavillon at the palace does not have the facility to provide adequate care and sanitation for the displaced persons, they were advised to go to Apa Local Government where the state government is adequately running three IDP camps.” Deborah Onuminya and all the women around her refused to accept Mr. Obeya’s explanation. They said if the royal father had wanted them to be moved to a better facility far away, he would have provided transportation, not chase them out to the street where their human dignity was further reduced. PREMIUM TIMES met two organizations at the compound of the Obeyas, (the Idoma Progressive Movement and the Dream Again NGO led by Bashiru Adamu), serving food and distributing clothing materials to the Agatu Displaced Persons. At the Och’ Idoma palace, this reporter was told that he arrived too late in the day for an appointment with the traditional ruler. The palace secretary said the Och’ Idoma had constituted a refugee committee headed by a traditional chief in Apa and that all enquiries about the refugees should be directed to that committee. PREMIUM TIMES found that the refugee committee comprised, local chiefs some of whom have fled their homes. No member of the committee could be reached for days http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/199825-exclusive-agatu-killings-och-idoma-expels-suffering-refugees-domain.html |

Muhammadu Buhari has admitted that Nigeria has joined the Islamic Coalition against terrorism being championed by Saudi Arabia. Buhari made the disclosure during an interview with Aljareeza, which was broadcast at the weekend. When asked whether Nigeria was part of the coalition, Buhari said: “We are part of it because we’ve got terrorists in Nigeria that everybody knows which claim that they are Islamic. “So, if there’s an Islamic coalition to fight terrorism, Nigeria will be part of it because we are casualties of Islamic terrorism,” he added. On whether Nigeria became a member of the coalition during his meeting with King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia recently, Buhari said “yes.” He said that he could not disclose the details of how such coalition would work for Nigeria when asked during the interview. But he said: “Well, that we mentioned under Lake Chad Basin Commission, our regional grouping compromising Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Benin and we dedicated a certain number of troops to be deployed in our own sub-region and I don’t think we have to tell the press the details of that.” On whether joining the Islamic coalition will serve Nigerian security interest, he said: “Certainly. I’ve just told you it is the Boko Haram itself that declared loyalty to ISIS. “ISIS is basically based in Islamic countries. Now, if there’s a coalition to fight Islamic terrorism, why can’t Nigeria be part of it, while those that are fighting in Nigeria as Boko Haram claim to be Muslims. But the way they are doing it is anti-Islamic, he said. When his interviewer pointed out that since Nigeria was roughly evenly divided among Christians and Muslims and that some Christians were complaining that he was giving Islamic identity to Nigeria, Buhari wondered why such Christians had not gone to fight Boko Haram in the North or militants sabotaging installations in the South. “Why can’t those Christians that complained go and fight terrorism in Nigeria or fight the militancy in the South. It’s Nigeria that matters, not the opinion of some religious bigots,” he stated. On whether he was trying to change the religious identity of the country, Buhari noted: “How can I change the religious identity of Nigeria? “No religion advocates hurting the innocent and just because the Muslims are the ones that claim to be Boko Haram and they are killing innocent people whether in the church, in the bus or in the market place, then I will just sit and look at them because I too am a Muslim? Islam is against injustice in any form.” Buhari’s admission of Nigeria’s membership of the Islamic coalition came barely two weeks after an official Presidency statement seemed to suggest that Buhari had turned down the invitation to be part of the coalition. A statement issued by the Senior Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), Garba Shehu, during the president’s trip to Saudi Arabia had said that Buhari had pledged Nigeria’s upport for the coalition even if it would not be part of it. The statement had said that two leaders who engaged in extensive discussions on regional and global issues also agreed that terrorism posed a common threat to their states and would require close cooperation to prevail over the threats. It observed that President Buhari who was making his first pronouncement on the invitation to join the coalition of Islamic states against terror spearheaded by the Saudis congratulated the Kingdom on its formation. The statement quoted Buhari thus: “Even if we are not a part of it, we support you. I must thank the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the recent creation of a coalition to address the menace of international terrorism. Nigeria will support your efforts in keeping peace and stopping the spread of terror in your region. This is in consonance with our own commitment and on-going efforts in seeking to stamp out Boko Haram terrorists from the West African sub-region and Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) http://thenationonlineng.net/493078-2/ |
