Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has sworn in a judicial commission of inquiry into the violence/ killings that negatively affected the March 19 legislative re-run election, with a charge to the commission to get to the root of the matter. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ) had suspended elections in eight local government areas of the state because of violence and killings. A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Samuel Okonta, was also killed while working as an ad hoc staff member of INEC in the elections. Swearing in the members of the commission under the chairmanship of Justice Monima Wenike Danagogo on Wednesday, Wike decried the violence witnessed during the re-run elections, saying that it was necessary to ascertain the root causes with a view to checking a recurrence in the future. He charged the commission to identify those involved in the killings, those killed and the scope of violence during the elections. The governor also charged the commission to identify property damaged in the course of the violence and the owners of such property. http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/04/06/rivers-re-run-wike-swears-in-judicial-commission-of-inquiry-into-violence-killings/ |

FOR the 76 Ugwuleshi indigenes in Awgu Community, Enugu State, they would ever hate that faithful day they gathered to organize a search party for two of their women allegedly abducted by Fulani herdsmen who have been having a running battle with them over destruction of their farm lands. They woke up to realize that two of their women were allegedly abducted by the Fulani herdsmen and they decided to organize a search party to look for them. The farmers, after their release from detention. While they gathered to commence the search, they ran into some soldiers on patrol who seeing the large number of men confronted them. They were said to have satisfactorily explained themselves to the soldiers who it was said wanted to leave them. But suddenly, it was alleged, one Alhaji came out and met them and allegedly placed a call after which some more army vans arrived and bundled them to Umuahia where they were clamped into prisons. That was how their ordeal drew public outcry. Their arrest created fear and tension in the community. Following public outcry and condemnation, they were arraigned in court last Friday in two Magistrate Courts on a five count arson and illegal possession of dangerous weapons charge as well as burning down 90 houses at Obinwanne Fulani Community Settlement in Umunneochi. When the charges were read to them, they pleaded not guilty. The presiding Magistrate granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with five sureties who must be resident in Umuahia or Umunneochi. Alternatively, the traditional ruler of the community would sign with two other prominent persons he nominated and who are resident in Umuahia or Umunneochi. Their bail conditions were perfected at about 4.47pm, prompting them to erupt in jubilation in the court premises thankful for breathing the air of freedom after two weeks of imprisonment. The matter was adjourned to April 29, 2016 for trial. Reacting to the development, the traditional ruler of the Community, Igwe Godwin Nwobi expressed happiness that his people have been granted bail, saying “at least I can now sleep”. The monarch has been in Umuahia for three days running, trying to effect the release of the people. Also the law maker representing them in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr. Nelson Ogunji said he was happy that his constituents have been granted bail, just as he lamented their arrest in the first place. According to him, Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has promised to make sure that such incident never happens again, as they were working towards finding a lasting solution to it. Michael Wetkas, a detective with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, narrated how Senate President Bukola Saraki allegedly used fictitious names to launder billions of naira. Testifying against the senate president at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), the EFCC detective also claimed that Saraki’s personal account at GTB had an inflow of about N4 billion between 2005 and 2013. “When the defendant was governor of Kwara state between 2003 and 2011. The commission received several petitions from various groups. One of the petitioners was Kwara Freedom Network. They brought several petitions all bordering on abuse of office by the defendant, misappropriation of public fund and money laundering. “Sometime in 2014 the then executive chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde received intelligence reports of suspicious transactions involving the defendant. He set up a team of investigators. Our task was to investigate the intelligence reports. “The investigation report was reviewed by my team. In the course of our investigation, we discovered that there were several companies which were linked to the defendant. Some of them include Carlisle Properties Investment Ltd, Skyview Properties Ltd, LimKvars Ltd, and TIly-lie Ltd. Some of the companies maintain accounts at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Zenith Bank, Access Bank, and other banks. “From the investigation, it was discovered that the defendant maintained three accounts at GTB. The first account is a naira currency account; the second is a US dollar account, and the third is a pound sterling account. “The naira account was analyzed, and it was discovered that between 2005 and 2013, the account had an in-flow of about N4 billion. The major source of in-flow into the accounts was loans taken from GTB within the period. The loans were about N2.5 billion, and the other source of in-flows into the account was massive lodgments by individuals. Other in flows into the account were from the companies. “It was discovered that money was used for the purchase of property. The dollar account was also analyzed. The major source of in-flow into the dollar account was Tily-lie Properties Ltd, which was about $2m. Another source was from Bureau de Change companies. And the rest was cash lodgments by individuals. The cash in the dollar account between 2009 and 2013 was $6m. We discovered that up to $3.4m was wired to American Express Services Europe Limited, which was used to fund the defendant’s American Express Service New York card account number 374588216836009. “The defendant wired over 1.5m pound sterling to Fortis Bank for the purchase of property in the UK. “After that, because of the suspicious in-flows into the account, the bank (GTB) officials were invited. The reason for the invitation of the officials was that some of the individuals who were making the cash lodgment into the account were bank officials. One Oluwa Tujimu reported to the commission. From our of interactions with him, we discovered that some of the lodgments were made through a superior at the bank, Bayo Daudu, who was the relationship manager of the account. In our interaction with Daudu, it was discovered the cash sums were handed over to him by the defendant for lodgment in the account. According to Daudu, he goes to Kwara state government house to collect the money from the defendant for lodgment into the account at the GRA Ilorin branch of GTB. “We discovered one name, Abdul Adama, who made transaction 50 times into the account in a single day. The sum was broken down to N600, 000 and N900,000, and was lodged in the same day. Subsequently, after that one Ubi made a lodgment on the same day about 20 times in the same range of N600, 000 and N900, 000. We looked for Adama and invited him. He reported that the cash sums were handed over to him by the defendant and stated further that the cash sums that were lodge in by Ubi into the same account were from the accused. “Adama and Ubi were personal assistants to the accused while he was governor. Further investigations revealed that other individuals who made lodgments into the account were fictitious. “GTB said they had done the needful by reporting the suspicious transactions to FIU.” http://saharareporters.com/2016/04/05/efcc-detective-personal-assistant-saraki-deposited-n60000-n900000-his-account-50-times |

Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, Tuesday, warned Governor Seriake Dickson against his alleged continual moves to destablise the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Sylva said Dickson, his rival in the last controversial governorship election in the state, was currently circulating falsehood against him and key members of the party to cause disaffection in APC. The former governor in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, noted that the governor resorted to using discredited and suspended members of APC as moles to cause internal disaffection in the party and blackmail the party leaders. Sylva said Dickson’s devilish conspiracy against APC would always be exposed and demonised, adding that it was an effort in futility. He said: “Of late, Dickson and his party, Peoples Democratic Party, have re-enacted their pastime of spreading falsehood about APC and its leaders in Bayelsa State and trying to create dissension where none exists. “They had tried that before and during the last governorship election in the state. When they failed miserably, they turned to forces external to Bayelsa, but inside the election management body and armed militia community, which they used to steal the people’s votes. “After he was awarded victory, one would have thought that a man who ‘won’ election would concentrate on governance. But Dickson would not. Living under the shadow of fear of losing the stolen mandate, since APC filed a petition at the election tribunal, Dickson has applied every available mischief to try to destabilise the party and blackmail its leaders. “They have now procured the services of some discredited officials of APC, who were suspended recently. These renegades are being used by Dickson and PDP to spread wild, unsubstantiated allegations against Sylva and the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri. “Fabricating stories about Sylva and APC has proved to be more than just a passing fad for Dickson. It has become policy – the only ostensible policy of the administration since his swearing in. The latest email from Dickson’s media aide, Daniel Markson (dmb2co@yahoo.com), to some reporters last Sunday, 3 April at 16:24 hours, clearly show how the Dickson government throws caution to the wind in its haste to blackmail APC. “Dickson has since being awarded victory at the governorship election manifested understandable nervousness on the http://thenationonlineng.net/sylva-dickson-stop-destabilising-bayelsa-apc/ |

Special Assistant to Ekiti State Governor on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka has described the yesterday’s meeting in Lagos of the embattled former Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State, Mr Temitope Aluko with the Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose as a vindication of his position that “he (Aluko) can make a 360 degree turnaround and return to the same Governor Fayose that he claimed rigged election because he lacked integrity.” Tope Aluko Olayinka, who said he was speaking in his personal capacity and not as spokesperson of the governor, added that, “Being the person that faced Aluko on Television interviews where he told all the lies that he told against Governor Fayose and the people of Ekiti State, I am constrained to make my position known on this new development. “Even though Governor Fayose, being someone with large heart may not be too happy that I am making this statement, but as one of the major dramatis personae in the whole saga, my conscience won’t allow me to just keep silent after all the pains and confusion caused by Aluko. “I did say on Channels Television that giving the right situation or after Aluko must have concluded his scamming of the APC and its gullible leaders, he will return to Governor Fayose and recant everything that he had said. “Today, I have been vindicated because Aluko has done just that and I wonder how he will feel when he comes face to face with the people that he has destroyed. I wonder how he will feel when he comes face to face with those fine military officers that he went to Kaduna to lie against and made them to lose their jobs. “Also, I wonder how those who funded him will be feeling now, having failed to listen when I was consistently saying that they were being duped. I wonder how the Department of State Services (DSS) men who took Aluko’s lies and acted on them by invading the State House of Assembly will feel now that they have integrity problem because of what he (Aluko) made them to do. “However, I salute my boss, Governor Fayose for once again displaying his statesmanship because only a statesman with a large heart can hold the hands of someone like TKO Aluko after all that he did to pull down his government. “I also thank God for vindicating me by finally exposing the hypocrisy of Aluko to the whole world to see.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/04/ive-been-vindicated-by-the-u-turn-of-tko-aluko-fayoses-aide/ |

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on Sunday identified himself as a target of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for what he linked to his unrelenting criticism of the President’s policies. He added that the realisation made him to be cautious of his dealings in office. The governor, who spoke during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, noted that he had started the construction of a flyover in Ado/Ikere Road for N5.7bn and invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to be part of the project from the outset. Fayose said, “I have started the construction of a flyover in Ado/Ikere Road for N5.7bn. I have also invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to be part of it, because I know I am a target of the current administration. “You may not like my face or my style. But take the message and leave the messenger. If they have anything against me, they would have published it I know. I prepare for my defence. I am fully prepared. “Criticising the President should not make an enemy. We will sue the government. We learnt this from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. He is always in court either by proxy or direct. You cannot keep arresting my principal officers and members of my state House of Assembly.” The governor also urged the President to devalue the naira without further delay, adding that he blamed him for the current economic woes in the country. “The All Progressives Congress deceived us. They manipulated us. I blame the current economic woes in Nigeria on the President. No matter the past economic situation of a country, a good manager would have been able to normalise the situation. The way things are going in Nigeria, the economy may shut down soon,” he stated http://www.punchng.com/i-know-im-a-target-of-buharis-govt-fayose/ |

Nigerians did not elect us to give them excuses, Lai Mohammed the Federal Minister of Information has said. The minister who spoke in Yola yesterday, while in Adamawa as part of the presidential entourage led by the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, attending the wedding of the son of the Adamawa state Governor Sen. Mohammed Jibrilla Bindow also reiterated that the fuel crisis would soon be over. ” Yes, we appreciate the feelings of Nigerians. We also go through it, because we are not immune to it. As a responsible government. A government that was propelled to power by the votes of the people we cannot give excuses but empathise with them. And this government is working 24 hours to ensure that this problem is resolved,” Mohammed said. The minister who pointed out that Nigerians, did not elect them to give them excuses however noted that the All Progressive Congress led administration as a responsible government was doing everything to ease the current suffering resulting from fuel scarcity. He said the federal government is working to ensure that in two weeks time the commodity is made available in all parts of the country and alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians. According to him, the government had already taken some steps in that direction, he said, ” some short term, some medium term and some longer term. Because the question will be what are we doing to alleviate this problem because that is what concern Nigerians.” Some of the measures he highlighted include the government’s appeal to oil majors to make forex available to their companies operating in the downstream sector of the oil industry, adding that the difficulties encountered in getting foreign exchange was partly to blame for the fuel crisis. Lai who noted that other measures taken by the government is to open up the sector for smaller modular oil farms to be set up however stressed that the government was is not unaware that the ultimate is for the country to be self sufficient in the production of the commodity. He added that once the government gets this done it would solve the problem of the fuel crisis and thus alleviate the sufferings being faced by the people. http://www.punchng.com/we-cannot-give-excuses-for-fuel-scarcity-%e2%88%92-lai-mohammed |
