Politics / "How I Contributed To The Problem Of Nigeria" Tinubu Confesses by oilPUSSY(f): 2:39pm On Mar 24, 2022
Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Thursday called on Nigerians to truthfully acknowledge the fact that all are responsible for the parlous state of the nation’s social, economic and political sectors and be bold enough to come together to correct same.

He stated this while delivering the 25th convocation lecture of the Lagos State University, LASU, titled ‘Global trends: Nigeria and its place in the world, do we love ourselves enough?’

He was represented on the occasion by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

Taking a cursory look at developments in the social, economic and political sectors of the county, he opined that being ranked as the seventh most populous nation on Earth, her ranking as the 131st globally in GDP per capita, was not cheery news.

“Let us not fool ourselves. History is patient yet not forever lenient regarding negligent folly.

“There comes a time when there is no time. Our nation approaches such a moment.

“We have boasted of enormous potential for decades, consoling our discomfort by saying that potential will be realised tomorrow.

“But something disappointing seems to happen when tomorrow becomes today.

“Years and decades have passed, yet greatness remains elusive. If greatness came merely by speaking of it, we would be among the greatest nation in human history.

“Instead, Nigeria remains locked in place. We remain an economy unjustly designed to export raw materials and import increasingly expensive finished products.

“The name of the raw materials might have changed from cocoa and groundnut to oil and gas. The dire effects of this uneven economic arrangement remain the same.

“We must be truthful enough to acknowledge this lapse, bold enough to correct it, and tolerant enough not to endlessly vilify each other for causing it. We are all both cause and hopefully solution. Let us join hands. We must reform this nation,” he said.

While comparing economic developments in the country with some other nations, Tinubu said the country had been segregated into two unequal economic spheres.

“One, populated by a select few who flourish in the financial, corporate and virtual worlds. This group will be able to buy and do anything they want. The other will be the crowded house of the majority who work hard but earn very little given their strenuous effort. They will struggle but not gain. Toil not to triumph but merely survive. This unfairness has gone too long. We must end it,” he noted.

On high youth unemployment in Nigeria, he opined that with youth under-employment and unemployment projected to reach 60 per cent, urgent steps should be taken to redress the situation by increasing the nation’s annual economic growth.

“Sadly, Nigeria has never experienced double-digit growth for any sustained period. Nigeria and South Korea had per capita incomes of roughly $800 in 1950. By 2008, Nigeria’s per capita incomes doubled. Meanwhile, South Korea’s ballooned by over 2000 per cent,” he added.

On the need to quickly pay attention to agriculture, Tinubu raised the alarm that climate change and desertification were rapidly depleting arable land in the country.

“For many northern states, the percentage of land under attack exceeds 30 per cent. We face a harmful dynamic. More people are forced off the land due to deforestation, desertification and low rural incomes. Some of them crowd into other rural areas competing for limited resources with existing inhabitants,” he said.

Proffering solutions to the challenges, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said youth urban employment, agriculture, real estate reform, education and economy and infrastructure among others should be the focus of the government.

Tinubu later donated a Centre for Leadership and Development worth one billion to the university.

Who ever wins 2023 election one thing is clear

Yorubas have shown themselves as greedy and power hungry ...this is very important because when they go back to another 45 year long opposition that would be used against them

If presidency is coming to south then it goes to south east if not let north keep it
Onu ,nigige , nwajuba , umiah ,even Joe igbokwe are all Igbos in APC n contributed to the growth of APC ...infact 2 of the 4 parties that formed APC was lead by Igbos rochas/nigige APGA and onu ANPP ...so there is absolutely no reason to deny this Igbo sons their turn

But the next president of southern extraction would be an Igbo man when ? I can't say

They want to create an Impression that there is no Igbo or Igbos don't have a stake in APC..

I just dey pity this people..

@ the bolded that one is certain.. They are known for opposition since time immemorial..

Fresh hurdles for Abdulahi Adamu as defunct legacy parties kick

Some top shots of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, have faulted reports that an unwritten agreement and understanding among founders of the party in 2013 ceded the 2023 presidential ticket of the party to the South-West geo-political zone.

One of the bigwigs, who played crucial roles in the formation of the APC, and in the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the party’s presidential primaries in Lagos in 2014 and the election proper in 2015, said: “Nothing like that happened. There was no meeting whatsoever to talk about ceding power to the South-West.”

Another top shot of the party spoke in like manner, adding that it is difficult to tell if President Buhari would back the South-West to produce his successor, even if such an agreement was ever reached, adding, “we don’t know who will succeed President Buhari, but we know those who will not succeed him.”

Meanwhile, two days to the March 26 national convention, the ruling party is still mired in disagreement over the zoning of positions and which part of the country should produce its presidential candidate for the 2023 poll.

Although the party hierarchy agreed recently that the North and South should swap positions in 2023, which means the South should produce the President while the North produces party national chairman, there are still clamour for the seat to be thrown open.

Zoning formula causes a stir

Also, at a time many party faithful had bought nomination forms, based on the zoning formula party stakeholders agreed, for which the APC had generated N700 million as of press time, there is disquiet in many states over zoning and adoption of some aspirants as consensus candidates.

In the South-East, the Abia State chapter of the APC kicked against the adoption of Henry Ikoh as consensus candidate for National vice chairman, South-East, by some Abia leaders.

Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Okey Ezeala said there is no iota of truth in the adoption of Ikoh as consensus national vice chairman, South-East because “the position of National vice chairman, South-East is not zoned to Abia State. It was zoned to Imo State. What is zoned to Abia is National Welfare Secretary. Abia State APC exco and stakeholders have unanimously nominated F.M. Nwosu as consensus candidate for national welfare secretary. That was why major chieftains of the party in Abia, which include General Ogbonnaya Okoro, General Chinedu Abraham, and Gen Charles Nwogbe accompanied him to the APC national secretariat to collect the nomination form. He is the one the APC in Abia State is supporting.”

3 aspirants challenge Omisore for national scribe

The hope of Senator Iyiola Omisore to become the consensus candidate for the office of National Secretary hung in the balance, yesterday, as three other chieftains of the party joined the race.

Seen as the candidate of National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, there have been reported attempts by some governors in the zone to get other critical stakeholders to endorse Senator Omisore.

Documents sighted by Vanguard, yesterday, showed that two aspirants have emerged from Oyo State to challenge Omisore. Oyo has been making a case to have the office micro-zoned to her since it currently does not have an APC governor. The two aspirants from Oyo are a former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu; and Professor Olaiya Abideen Olaitan. There is another contender from Ondo State, Engr. Ife Oyedele of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited.

Tinubu will have divide the house into equal number... Divide Oyo and other Eastern states to meet their numbers so that we will have to win votes too...

Giving Kano a majority of power to decide the last electorial votes in the last two presidential elections will stop
.... Tinubu understood this and created a strong ally with Ganduje to win his votes from Kano... Whereas we have population in every region... We an also have our kids go out to vote and double our votes too....
