whitecat1:
@op, first learn what "found" means. You can't "found" a place you met people already living. Most of this story was written to sound like Ilorin story. Fake story from top to bottom. This is not the history of Lagos.

Eko is the abbreviation of Yoruba word Erekosu(Island)though some Ijebu people call it Ereko(bush strip). Look around Lagos, there's no evidence of any culture and tradition outside Yoruba, Yoruba Edo inclusive.

Pls take a good look @ the dressing of the Lagos Oba And the chiefs white royal attire they bear striking resemblance to those of the Binis, can u pls point out any other group or That shares such royal dress culture.
And if you must know, no oba is crowned in Lagos without informing the oba of Benin who plays a paramount role in the coronation.
The so called aworis where not originally from eko (Lagos) they were fleeing from wars in their lands (refugees) just like the ekitis too.
The binis were the first to conquer the land and thus the first to assert their authority on the land (fly their flag),and that is why the royalty or ownership of eko\lagos I'd theirs .

Am sorry if you aren't comfortable with me tutoring you on the history of the people and land you say you you belong to!

THE REAL HISTORY OF LAGOS.(who can lay claim to the land).
source: wikipedia.
Researched by Ejike Michael

According to the oral history of Lagos, at some point around 1300-1400 CE, the Oba (King) of the Benin Empire - who used to send trade expeditions to Ghana, where spices were traded - heard from one of his traders complaints about the way she was being treated by the Awori who lived in the area of current day Lagos. The Oba of Benin then sent a trade expedition by sea to engage with the Awori people, who nonetheless declined to engage and attacked the mission sent by Benin.

Upon hearing this as the mission returned to Benin City, the Oba of Benin commanded the assembling of a war expedition, led by Ado, a Benin Prince, which headed to the settlement of the Awori (current-day Lagos; then called Eko by the Benin people) and demanded an explanation.

On getting there, Ado and his army were more than well received - the Awori from Lagos asked Benin Prince Ado to stay there and become their leader. Ado agreed, on the condition that they surrendered their sovereignty to the Oba of Benin, to which the Awori people of Lagos agreed.

Upon hearing this, the Oba of Benin gave his permission for Prince Ado and the expedition to remain in Eko with the Awori. The Oba of Benin later sent some of his chiefs, including the Eletu Odibo, Obanikoro and others, to assist Ado in the running of Eko.
From the crowning of Ado as its first Oba, Lagos (then called Eko) served as a major center for slave-trade, from which then Oba of Benin Ado and all of his successors for over four centuries benefitted - until 1841, when Oba Akitoye ascended to the throne of Lagos and tried to ban slave-trading.

Local merchants s
trongly opposed the intended move, and deposed and exiled the king, and installed Akitoye's brother Kosoko as Oba. At exile in Europe, Akitoye met with British authorities, who had banned slave-trading in 1807, and who therefore decided to support the deposed Oba to regain his throne. With the success of the British intervention, in 1851 was reinstalled as Oba of Lagos. In practical terms, however, British influence over the kingdom had become absolute, and ten years later, in 1861, Lagos was formally annexed as a British colony.
Eko was the land area now known as Lagos Island where the king's palace was built. The palace is called Iga Idunganran, meaning "palace built on the pepper farm". Oba Ado and the warriors from Benin, as well as some of the indigenous people who sought safety, settled down in the southern part of Eko called "Isale Eko", Isale literally meaning bottom, but must have been used to indicate downtown (as in Downtown Lagos).
The first king of Lagos, Oba Ado, apart from having two sons also had a daughter Erelu Kuti, who begat Ologun Kutere, who later became king. Shokun his brother, who was more aggressive and whom the Erelu suspected could plan a palace coup, was given a chieftaincy title, "Onile-gbale", and a palace just behind the king's palace. This was the first time that a Chief
would be appointed and installed at the same time as a King's coronation.
Oba Akitoye who ceded Lagos to the British was oba Kosoko's uncle. Oba Akitoye was the first Oba not to be buried in a Bini. Prior to this, all the Kings of lagos were buried in Bini. They passed on taxes to the Oba of Bini until the British came and explained that there was no need to send taxes to Bini anymore especially as the Binis themselves were paying taxes to Britain. It was during his reign that the direct influence of the Binis on Lagos ended.

Oba Kosoko believed in the slave trade and was at loggerheads with the British, hence his dethronement and flight, first to Badagry and later to Epe, Nigeria where he founded kingdoms that still exist today.

Modern-day Lagos was founded by the Bini in the sixteenth century. It was later called Eko. The Portuguese explorer Ruy de Sequeira who visited the area in 1472, named the area around the city Lago de Curamo; the present name is Portuguese for "lakes". An alternate explanation is that Lagos was named for Lagos, Portugal - a maritime town which at the time was the main center of the Portuguese expeditions down the African coast and whose own name is derived from the Celtic word Lacobriga.
When the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established in 1914 Lagos was declared its capital. Lagos experienced rapid growth throughout the 1960s and 1970s as a result of Nigeria's economic boom prior to the Biafran War. This continued through the 1980s and 1990s up to the present date.

Lagos was the capital of Nigeria from 1914 - 1991 when the capital was moved to Abuja. Abuja is a capital like Washington, DC in USA and Brasilia in Brazil in that it was built from scratch specifically to be a capital.

Fashola’s Letter to All Lagosians, about Voting this Weekend

08.04.2015 at 8:59 pm By BellaNaija.com 13 Comments

Gov-FasholaDear Lagosians,

First let me thank you all for turning out to vote on the 28th March 2015 and for doing so peacefully to make history by electing the All Progressives Congress candidates in the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Once again, I must address you as we approach Saturday’s elections, when you will be electing a Governor who will continue after me and consolidate on the progress we have built together.

You will also be electing members of the State House of Assembly who will make laws on your behalf to assist the Governor and his team in the Executive arm.

Although your votes will be cast for one political party or the other, let me remind you that you will actually be voting for your well-being, security, prosperity and future.

You will also be voting for the future of your children. You will be choosing candidates and a party that you will entrust your lives to.

Think hard, think clearly, think deeply. Ask yourselves a few questions.

Who has shown a better record and example of protecting and securing you between the political parties?

Which of the parties cares more when disasters happen?

What is the record of the parties as it relates to the promises they have made to you in the past?

Which of the parties do you see regularly and which one do you see once in a while?

Which of the parties do you see when your life or property is threatened by epidemics like Ebola or by unfortunate accidents like plane crashes?

Which of the parties is showing that you can become home-owners without knowing anybody?

Which party has responsibility for providing electricity for you, and which one is taking up the responsibility to light up your streets and communities at night?

Which of them cares more about your children and their safety?

Indeed ask yourself; which of the parties threatened you with thugs on that sad Monday of March 16th and which is seeking to protect you by supporting the police; with patrol vehicles, fuel and other equipment?

Ask yourself when last you saw the Federal Fire Service in Lagos. The proud men and women of the Lagos State Fire Service have taken over admirably.

Ask yourself who should be supporting the police and who is actually doing it?

Dear Lagosians, your choice of who to vote for will be easy if you answer these questions within yourself honestly.

Indeed, you have clear choices to make between parties that use your resources to develop your society and community on the one hand, and the party that chooses to bring money to you for distribution when election beckons.

So you can choose between schools for your children, hospitals for your community, roads for your transportation or in the alternative, you can choose to have these services monetized once in four years.

Remember, that choices have consequences and your vote will decide the choice that shapes your lives.

Dear Lagosians, it is tempting to take the right and opportunity to vote for granted. It is tempting to think that it is too much trouble.

I agree that the process can be made much easier. But it is no excuse to refuse to vote.

Out of 5.8 million registered voters and 3.8 million PVC collections, only about 1.5 million turned out to vote, on the 28th March 2015.

Think of all the pain, the effort, the sleepless nights it took to get the PVCs to you. Think of the best way to show that the effort was not wasted or in vain.

It seems to me that the best way is to have all these 3.8 Million voters come out to vote.

By refusing to vote, you surrender decision making to a few and you will be bound by the consequences of your choices.

By refusing to vote, you do a great disservice to many who have lived before you, who fought very hard at great personal costs to themselves, to earn you this right.

By refusing to vote, you dishonour the sacrifice of patriots before you who fought for the right to vote.

Remember that when they were fighting for the right to vote, they were not fighting for yesterday, they were fighting for today and tomorrow.

They have handed today to you and I, can we secure tomorrow for the next generation?

Remember that since the capital of Nigeria was moved from Lagos 24 years ago in December 1991, Lagos has been abandoned by the Federal Government.

Ask yourself when the last major new road in Lagos was built by the Federal Government. It was the 3rd Mainland Bridge completed in 1990.

The assets the Federal Government left behind almost became a burden but for our resilience to maintain them. Today the Federal Government is owing Lagos N51 Billion which remains unpaid.

This is not in accord with the spirit of the promise made to Lagos when the Federal Government first declared Abuja as the capital in 1976.

The Head-of-State at the time, the late Gen Murtala Muhammed, said then and I quote him:

“…Lagos will, in the foreseeable future, remain the nation’s commercial capital and one of its nerve centres. But in terms of servicing the present infrastructure alone the committed amount of money and effort required will be such that Lagos State will not be ready to cope.”

(But we have coped at great sacrifice)

“It will even be unfair to expect the state to bear this heavy burden on its own. It is therefore necessary for the Federal Government to continue to sustain the substantial investment in the area. The port facilities and other economic activities in the Lagos area have to be expanded.

“There is need in the circumstances for the Federal Government to maintain a special defence and security arrangement in Lagos which will henceforth be designated a special area. These arrangements will be carefully worked out and written into the new constitution. Kaduna and Port Harcourt are to be accorded similar status and designated as Special Areas…”

Sadly, no Federal Government and indeed not the PDP Government has done anything to redeem that promise for the 16 years it was in power or to protect Lagos.

Instead of assisting Lagos, they attacked her. If you remember FERMA, in 2006, the same PDP seized your Local Government money and resisted the attempt to bring Government closer to you by creating more local Governments.

On Monday 16th March 2015, the same PDP continued in their tradition of assaulting Lagos. Their supporters took over a major road in Lagos and threatened your peace and security.

On Wednesday 18th March 2015, the President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari came to Lagos and said Lagos will receive compensation for the role she has played in maintaining Federal Government Assets.

Yesterday on Tuesday the 7th of April 2015, he was here in Lagos in his first political engagement since he became President-Elect and he reiterated his commitment to support Lagos.

This is what I will vote for. This is what I urge you to think about as you vote on Saturday.

This is the place that every Nigerian calls his home. It is the home of displaced people. It is the place where the homeless arrive and are made welcome.

It is the place where generations of Nigerians have arrived without knowing anybody but have, through the opportunities and inclusion, become somebody.

This is the place where the Late Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya and Owelle Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe consummated the handshake across the Niger and played politics without bitterness.

Tell those who try to divide us that our greatest strength has always been our diversity.

Tell them that you feel safe here, and that I have continuously assured you of your safety as the basis of our mutual co-existence.

Tell them that our waterways have been assets of prosperity and sustenance, for transport, recreation and fishing and they will remain so.

Let nobody now attempt to re-write that history for you.

When they reel out false statistics about Lagos, please ask them the statistics about the places they governed for 16 years.

When they reel out statistics, please remind them that those statistics don’t stand in isolation, they are the burden of a whole nation and many parts of West Africa that Lagos state bears.

When they promise you heaven and earth, remember their broken promises on power, security and many more.

Ask them to show you a plan, if they can produce one, which is doubtful, ask them whether they have implemented it elsewhere.

Tell them that you have seen the Lagos Development plan for 2012 – 2025, that the Lagos Light Rail Project, the Adiyan Water Works Phase II of 75 Million gallons a day, the solar power for all schools and many more which are part of the plans for you and your children and which are already being implemented.

Tell them that you will vote to keep a plan that you can see, that is already working, instead of a plan that you have not seen.

Ask them what happened to Vision 20:20, to the 7-Point Agenda and to Transformation.

Tell them that your bird in hand will not be traded for a dozen unseen birds in the bush.

Tell them that this election is not about money, tell them that it is not about ethnicity and it is not about religion.

Tell them that this election is about the place you call your home, the place you earn your living and the place where your investments are the safest.

Tell them that you will not play ethnic or religious politics with your survival. Tell them that you will not vote with anger.

Tell them that you will vote with common sense and for experience.

Tell them that you have seen Lagos survive without Federal support, and you wish to see her flourish with Federal support.

That will be the most historic thing you will have done, putting Lagos in the centre with your votes.

History and tomorrow beckons. Don’t turn your backs.

Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN

Governor of Lagos State.

HealthWhy Some Peoples Body System Rejects The Hiv Virus by okuya(op): 12:51pm On Jan 18, 2013

Excerpted from NOVA: "Surviving AIDS," this segment showcases the work of Drs. David Ho and Stephen O'Brien.
By examining the "outliers" -- in this case, people like Steve Crohn, whose cells repeatedly resisted HIV infection -- Ho and his colleagues found a genetic mutation that prevents the HIV virus from entering the cell. This clip includes animation of HIV entering a white blood cell through the CD-4 and CCR-5 receptors on the cell's surface. Some individuals have no CCR-5 gene, which means that HIV cannot enter their cells. Scientists are using this new information in the development of an AIDS vaccine. The year was 1996. Drug companies were rushing to the market with the most effective drugs yet against the dreaded AIDS virus. These protease inhibitors, despite their side effects and high cost, would be the first to ease symptoms dramatically and improve the prognosis for infected patients.

During that same year, competing scientific groups made a series of discoveries that could open a new chapter in treating -- and preventing -- infection by the lethal organism. For the first time, the treatments would be aimed not at the virus itself, but at a portal through which HIV enters white blood cells and attacks the immune system.

Scientists in 1996 identified the portal: It was a large protein called Chemokine Receptor 5, or CCR-5, which is a normal part of the cell produced by a gene having the same name.

When this gene is mutates, it produces the protein incorrectly. In fact, when people inherit two copies of the mutant CCR-5 gene, the cell fails to make the portal protein at all. It simply does not exist, and the cell is like a house with no front door.

The finding was "pretty stunning," said Stephen O'Brien of the National Cancer Institute. He had been searching for years for genetic changes that conferred HIV resistance, and here was a powerful one.

Perhaps best of all, people can get along fine without a functioning CCR-5 gene or protein. That makes CCR-5 an excellent "target" for drugs. A compound that blocks the CCR-5 protein might prevent HIV infection as if a person had naturally inherited the mutation.

This discovery has not yet translated into new treatments. A dozen pharmaceutical companies, however, are developing drugs designed to block HIV's entrance into the white blood cell by creating a non-functional CCR-5 receptor. Already, some of them are in clinical trials in HIV patients, perhaps laying the groundwork for the most effective treatments yet.

For all those who doubt the power of God in working miracles in Human lives, these r what I have to say:
1-miracles are not meant for unbelievers like you, but for those of us who faithfully believe in God's miraculous grace.
2-for all who doubt, when faced with human problems such as diseases and crises dat defy's human solutions you r finished as there would be no answer to ur problems. But for us who believes, the grace of God breaks every limit to solutions and answers to our problems.
3-there are no situations or problems too "SMALL" or too big for God to play a part in the lives of we His children to constantly remind us of how much He loves us.
And finally for those who believe, let not ur faith be shaken by the world or words of the unbelievers, For if God Himself was to show such signs and wonders such as putting the oceans and rivers afloat right above our heads and make us walk with the clouds right beneath our feet they would still doubt attributing it to some form of "unexplainable NATURAL phenomenon", how much more driving a car without petrol!. The lives of the believers and unbelievers are far apart like sun is from the earth!, as the bible tells us that any man who trusts only his HUMAN WISDOM is foolish!

Recently the spokesperson of Congress for Progress Change Rotimi Fasakin granted an intrview in which he claimed dat some of d National Youth corp members murdered during their service in d last presidential election were IT consultants for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
I believe enough is enough! With all these politicians playing their dirty politics with our bloods. Over FIFTY lIVES including those of nine serving corps members ended violently in cold blood, and the first statement that is issued by d CPC presidential candidate Gen muhammed Buhari is a statement saying the Mob which murdered this youths were only registering their anger over the election rigging by the PDP, a statement which seems to be justifying the action of the monstrous mob!.
Two years after this gruesome crime no one has been brought to book, the politicians as usual played politics wit this innocent lives.
Despite d fact dat d faces of dis murderers were captured in fotographs on newspaper frontpages with clubs and other other weapons, not a single one of them has been arrested despite d fact dat they can easily be identified if security agents wants to pick them up in those vicinities in which those fotographs were taken, which we all know is where they reside.
For Fasakin, he has d following questions to answer:
Who incited d mob by informing them dat the corps members where PDP agents
What is Fasakin trying to tell the world, dat d cold blooded murders is justified?

If u didn't serve in a rural community I tell U, U had missed an experience of a lifetime which is priceless. I was lucky to serve in a rural community called Osi in Ekiti local govt in kwara state in2001.like other corpers who were not posted to d state capital ilorin or more developed towns like Offa in d state, we arrived our communities of pry assignment in tears of dissapointment, but as time went by there was a great turnaround in our feelings towards our new enviroment, and this was true to the words of our senior serving colleagues who where there to welcome us. and some of the things I cherished dat period which I could remember were d gift of God to mankind through nature in the following ways:
1. I still remember d beautiful smell of d trees and grasses that surrounded our lodges and lined up the dusty roads thru which I walked to school everymorng!
2.Those beautiful songs with which the birds woke us up every morning and put us to sleep in those hot afternoon days when having our siestas wit our mats under those cashew or tangerine trees will forever be in my head!.
3.It was then I had the trees swaying and dancing under the cool, unpolluted breeze, and sometimes greeted us with us wit their rustling leaves in a language u only understand when u are @ peace with nature.
4.Those early morning Fog that covers the entire village and mountains leaving droplets of water, which the trees and grasses holds out to sparkling under the sweet rising sun was spectacular.
5.Those beautiful rivers and little clean streams which criss-crossed the village, how can I forget those amazing kids playing and bathing in them, wit their greetings of "goo-mony, MY-CORPER!"( I wonder why d name MY-CORPER?)
6. Those amazing beautiful water-fall @ Ayuba by which we picknicked, I wish I could forever have close to me.
Those countless bright stars, in the night skies were God's own chandelier for us, and those bright lights from the full moon under which the corpers ate and shared each others life story was such a gift!.
7.Never will I forget those little village Kids, whom gathered and danced and gave impromptu, unreheased funny entertainments for some piece of biscuits and sweets, how can I forget their laughters ringing out, and smiles from their mothers, each time I served as an interpreter with my uniquely half baked Yoruba language on behalf of my corper colleagues.
8.Oh!, I would always remember those thatch roofed village bars in which corper Chike and others competed with one another over who is the champion in gulping down kegs of palmwine and bottles of gin, those cheap tasty smoked bushmeats, pure - natural dirty looking honey, still have their delicious. And sweet tastes lingering in my mouth.
8.I can never forget the happy faces of the community when u visit or say hi as u pass walk past them on those dusty roads.
And for all my colleagues who served with me, thanks for teaching me dat despite our differences in etnicity, language and religion we can live together like one family, I really MISS U GUYS!!

.It made me realise dat every kid is intelligent no matter d enviroment!, how can I forget the day 8yr old Tunde walked me to buy palm oil, and I was battling a little fly dat kept disturbing me for almost 10mins and always came back each time I tried killing it, he just laughed and told me to just leave d insect and never try to fight it off, that way it would leave, I obeyed and within two minutes it worked.
Christianity EtcRe: Bishop Oyedepo's Winners' Chapel Accused Of Exploiting British Worshippers by okuya: 3:49pm On Oct 21, 2012
mitwitdot: its funny how one man can generate so much media frenzy. why can't the media leave this man alone and stop using him as a standard for wayward pastorshuh?? Oyedepo sells books, tapes running into million copies every year. he impacts lives through messages of hope, and get rewarded for it...is that not enough for the man to be rich?? the guy has a private jet...SO? do you know about is traveling itinerary? if he has to be in Togo today and South Africa tomorrow do you expect him to be booking commercial flights every time. if there is no misconduct whatsoever on his part then let the man be left alone. The worshippers giving out thier money never complained of being hypnotised or deceived and a lot are educated and gainfully employed. if the want to follow the biblical instruction of "giving" then let them give, since we all have different beliefs

BUT PLS, LET'S LEAVE THIS MAN ALONE, HIS PROSPERITY SHOULD NOT BE ENVIED FOR HE HAS COMMITTED NO CRIME UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE.
Ur making sense dear!, in as much as I've never worshipped in his church, nor taken time to listen to his gospels, I to an extent believe dis men of God should be left alone or ignored by people who do not b'lieve in d honesty of d mission they claim, whether u r as rich as King Solomon or as poor as John the Baptist it clearly does not define if u r for God or Lucifer.
Na wa oo!, if any man of God dresses fine and lives in abundant wealth we claim "the swag" has disqualified him from being a man of God, and should he struggle wit English grammar, dresses casually and keeps a goatie beard like T.B Joshua used to U accuse him of being Ur village traditional juju man. Hiding under d guise of church. Haba make una go wit dem or ignore dem! .

What a pity, "unmanageable" could be dat d two inmates could av gone "gaga" in their head, as most death row inmates in Nigeria do, and their insanity cannot be managed by the poorly trained prison officials.
I pity them if its Lucy & Amnesty dat has to fight for dem!, and pray they don't give them d line they gave me few yrs back..."We talked, U know u don't av a listening govt!" And it ends there, no one fights the Nigerian govt better than d Nigerian journalists...kudos to dem I owe them a lot!,and I hope God will once more use them to intervene on these guys behalf.

I know d street in shomolu off morrocco road, having schooled at morrocco military pry sch, but it is popularly known as "Good-evening street", it is quite true that some of the women (whom are mostly Ogoja indigenes) have their kids living wit them cos we do see them in the mornings dressed for their schools, but none of them I'm sure has a husband wit dem but a lot has their regular known lovers whom r mostly retired soldiers from the neighbouring Myhoung barracks,

PoliticsRe: More Tragedy: Mother Of One Of The Victims Of The Aluu Killing Dies Of Shock by okuya: 7:02pm On Oct 10, 2012
What a pity!,in as much as we condenm the ALuu community for what they did, I still insist that the actual killers be fished out and punished, and this can be achieved through proper and careful investigation, to spare innocent members of the communities being punished unjustly for a crime committed by heartless few (most likely the vigilante).
Most of us suggesting that the whole community of Aluu be wiped out for this wicked act should note that many of Aluu's mothers would have shed so much tears about the fate that was about to embrace the boys, and some Aluu's fathers too would have felt some pains in their heart too!, and I'm certain the barbaric act would have also made so many innocent Kids whom had never witnessed such horror in their little innocent time in this tough, near-lawless nation into which they've been born to take flight out of fear!.
A good number of us have witnessed human lives being destroyed through jungle justice!, do you not notice some people drop tears, and softly with whispers beg for forgiveness on behalf of the victims!, who dare speak up and beg for the victims mercy when such barbaric vigilantes such as OPC in the west, Bakassi in the east becomes blood thirsty and starts binging on human blood!, why was the cities of Aba and Onitsha not punished for the atrocities of bakassi boys whom I know beheaded a pretty teenage girl for stealing his boyfriends twenty thousand naira, and drenched the cities in which they operated With human blood, and why did we not call for the heads of residents in so many areas in Lagos and Ibadan in which the OPC whom I witnessed locked 3 healthy young men in a commercial bus they used in robbing unsuspecting passengers through "one-chance", and set the bus ablaze with them screaming inside as their lives went up in flames!, did many spectators like me not shed tears and silently condenm such violence?, but who dare speak up in protest?! Why do so many peace loving muslims not condenm and try saving inncent southerners when the madness for blood comes upon them and have their head added to the number of heads the blood suckers, who are clearly a product of a failed system resulting from a nation ravaged by criminality and corruption ravaging every sphere of its existence!.
The community of Aluu no doubt unfortunately deserves the shame for the barbaric act on its soil, but we should note that if our emotions are allowed to lead us, so many innocent Aluu indigenes who probably would have condemned the acts of the vigilantes, would ironically pay the price through the loss of their lives and properties through retaliatory attacks, fuelled by our unguided remarks, and yes, a lot of innocent citizens would also lose their freedom through arrests by our corrupt Police who don't have the slightest idea that their duty includes preventing crimes before they happen but are more active in whirling their sirens and picking up innocent citizens arbitrarily anytime a crime is given high profile coverage
