Art, Graphics & VideoRe: Pirated Copy Of The New Xmen Wolverine Story. by OKX(m): 9:44am On Apr 19, 2009
@ iice
unfinished as in-
the studios said most of the CG scenes hadn't been fully rendered, the sound effects were not complete and most visual effects hadn't been added.

yeah, the ibo speaking scene was hilarious. i wonder why the white chap wasn't coached to speak the language too. he just babbled gibberish.

@ tallnaija.
proficiency in acquiring pirated movies aint a plus u know! grin
just kidding- it was online afterall.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: Pirated Copy Of The New Xmen Wolverine Story. by OKX(m): 11:28am On Apr 18, 2009
yeah. seen it.
it isn't a copy 4 reviewers tho, its an unfinished copy that was smuggled outta the studios and posted online.

the studios were crazy mad, the movie had over 100,000 downloads that day and the number is obviously still rising. CNN had a coverage on it.
20th century fox are still set for the 1st of May release date, the good thing is that even the pirates gave good reviews and most everyone expressed an intent to still watch the real, fully rendered version - so maybe it was good publicity in a way, afterall!

and yeah, it did reveal a few tips!

dude, u need 2 take that back.
u dont generalize based on a few episodes or experiences -( and i am guessing its one person. lol)

anyway, u paint the wrong pic. u could have at least said ' some nairalanders, ' grin

lofty statements, dont u think?

need more info on her action plan, before signing up becomes an option.

hey guys.
i beg to be excused from the polls- i havent posted any renders yet. swamped with work, unless we can get a weeks extension on the challenge.
my last post was a wip from a workspace screen grab!

@ xothermik
all game engines deal with ur models as polygons, irrespective of how u model them.
if u export ur 'low polygon' spline model for gaming as is, u'll be blown away by the no. of polys u will get.
thats why it pays to use polygon modeling straight up, that way u have absolute control of ur count.

max's spline modeling has an advantage insofar as subsequent manipulation is within max.
kinda like subdivision surfaces in maya- which combine the best of nurbs and polygons, and is totally unrecognizable by any other package in that subdivision format.

most jobs come with a poly count limit anyways.
just sharing.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Challenge I - Hard Surface Modelling by OKX(m): 7:24pm On Mar 24, 2009
@ zpixel
yeah, when i have major curvy stuff 2 model, i extrude faces along a spline curve.
i figure it cuts my work in half. takes some getting used to tho.

my ref for the side was from the link u posted- i think on the second page.
have uploaded it tho, if it helps.

upload urs already, willya!!

@ xothermik
lol.
yeah, i guess the next challenge should have a poly count limit.
didnt really have time for this, so i chucked a coupla rules n went 4 expediency.
urs is looking good! very professional.

should have renders later 2night. cant work on this beyond 2day.

i guess the materials, rendering and lighting may intensify the challenge. all models, so far, seem to be top notch.
i suggest we try n match the lighting conditions of the original- that way we have a common basis for assessment.

good going all.

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: Photoshop Questions And Answers. by OKX(m): 10:59am On Mar 24, 2009
@ emmakc

post ur panel so it can be an interactive session.
there are various ways to paint, depending on the artist, but loosely, most methods involve:

cleaning up ur ink layer using various tools- curves, levels, thresholds etc.
placing it as the topmost layer
setting that ink layer mode to multiply and locking it
creating various layers underneath the ink layer for the painting
using the lasso tool/magic wand etc, to define the area to paint

ur brush strokes will exceed the boundaries if u dont define the selection u wish to work on.
but like i said, if ur a newbie, post ur image- for a step-by-step tutorial. or check out various painting tutes online.

good luck.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: I Need A Graphic/animation Artist For My Book! by OKX(m): 7:38am On Mar 24, 2009
there really is no ceiling on this kinda work, post ur budget as a start- or u may just get ppl calling in with arbitrary figures.

guys cant quote without details:

how many pages of illustration?
how many xters are developed?
is it a one-time gig or a retainership?
are u talking concept art or finished character (pencilled, inked & coloured)?
are u talking animating the character?
do u need ppl for all three positions ( illustrator/graphic artist/animator) or a single person versed in all 3 areas?

u get?

properly define what the job entails, before asking for prices. that way, everyone knows what they are getting in for.

good luck!

i suggest u get ur funding right, then relaunch ur bid. its a feasible project, and a well prepared biz plan may fetch a financial backer or two. good luck man

@ Omnipotens
sure, ur the moderator- so u r within ur limits in ur request.
however, if u are to step into this particular issue, then u should have done so way back! way b4 things got this embarrassing.

theres no law against cartooning ppl, practically every notable personality including nigeria's president has had that done to his image.
(so, in that, kemji shares his fate with royalty. lol)
do u forbid caricaturing celebrities as well?

besides the pix have been posted already, wot u want him 2 do? and how does editing it solve anything?

the point here is mutual respect, that is what u have to enforce, if u can- and not dish arbitrary orders!
others, beside reactor have crossed the line too in various ways- so pls, address everyone or not at all!

guys, this is simply an art gallery! and i mean well.

@ sojioguns
i will not be drawn into an argument, however, think about this:
what u call a contraption (prob'ly becos of ur advanced level in the game), may just be the stimulus another person needs (who's game aint so tite)
the question is- would u be ragging kemji's work as much if his response to ur comments had been different?

this is not just so much about his work as it is about what u perceive as his attitude.
personally, i think he needs to adjust some facets of his attitude, but thats my opinion and doesnt mean squat! he aint my kid and i dont have to like him personally to like or dislike his work.
lets separate the art from the artist, guys.
this is an art gallery thread, not a personality assessment forum.

let the comments be work targeted, not personal.
but u r right, ppl can post what they like- both art n comments, and the reader can also choose to , PASS! lol

@ reactor
hilarious man. what r u? a comedian.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 2d/3d Art Gallery by OKX(op): 5:16pm On Mar 13, 2009
@ all
hey ppl, this particular thread is a gallery.

there are all kinds of galleries posting all types of art ranging from outstanding to mediocre- finally, it depends on the viewer.
the issue here, i daresay, is one of personality.

sadly, not everyone can be mature (however u define it) or take criticism (in the way u would like them to)- so enough with the unsolicited advice.
just post ur work, if it offends anyone, he/she can pass on to something else.

if a poster asks for comments to improve his game, then feel free to do so- otherwise let it go or, accept the response u may get if u give unsolicited advice!

developing anyones character is not ur responsibility, really!

crappy work speaks for itself as does excellence, so let the work testify!
this seems to be getting a mite personal.

i mean well guys, and i do agree- some attitudes are downright annoying.
but, hey, it takes all kinds,

i expect the more mature one of u two, to quit responding and end this embarassment!
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: Our Industry Is Dying And Needs A Boost! by OKX(m): 10:38am On Feb 26, 2009
my thots:

whether the term is 'dying' or 'developing', fact is the 'industry' (if we can call it that) is packed with mediocre players at best, who indirectly affect, then infect the dedicated few.
truth is, the mediocres have an edge, they are in it for the money, and they know how to sell crap as gold!
so more money is being made, and less art is being created!

hello ad agencies!
i am yet to meet an agency that cares more for the art, or the artist him/herself than the balance sheet.
80-20 is the formula i am most conversant with, and that is if i am lucky enough to even know what the client is paying!

the drive for perfection is what causes development, and boosts any sector - and this is majorly lacking here, and guess who the culprits are- you and i! (and of course -the economy!)

cos, guess what, the people that pioneer development are rarely the ones who reap the financial windfalls of their efforts! and honestly, which would u rather be?

every time uve delivered less than ur best,
every time business sense has prevailed over artistic creativity,
every time we have cut a corner -
we have added a brick to that building called 'mediocrity', and the results are all around us!

'art imitates life imitates art'
its a vicious cycle,

our conduct/output fails to raise the level of expectation/artistic awareness of our clients
this in turn allows the client to pay poorly/exploit us
this in turn affects our drive/ conduct/ expectations
this in turn causes our output to suffer! and the cycle repeats.

so train 20 gazillion people with the wrong mindset/focus, u would, at the end of the day, have that many people sabotaging the system out of a genuine need to survive.

however, strive for perfection and invest in research & development 2day- u may never strike it rich right away(of course u wont be poor)
be willing to skip a meal or two for the cause
man up to be the best u can be
be guided by the principles of the art
be willing to wait for the rewards when u mature,

and in the next decade, the level of art will be phenomenal.

wow. long write!

if u mount ur cloth on a curved rail, u will eliminate all corners- and the subsequent shadows.
doesnt that setup give u multi keying challenges?

wish i had shots from a project i sat in on, the whole green cloth was draped over a large oval rail, when lit, there were virtually no edges. even the drop to the floor was fastened to a similar oval rig- the output was beautiful.

omigosh!

this is unacceptable!
have been swamped 4 weeks- havent been online in ages.

@ res
u gat staying power buddy! hang in there, i will create a free window next week- and we will get stuff done!

kinda surprising abt the demi model, i rigged him without issues.
i will post a sample animation of him next week- for now, i have to go back under the radar. we are behind schedule n our sponsors are going ballistic!!

u dont have to respond to everyones comments tho, if ur team slacks- find a way to motivate them, if u cant n they quit, then get a new team!
this idea/project is very viable, and all it takes, is to find the right people to work it. going it alone shouldnt be an option!

i dont think kemji means ill tho, a lot of ppl are pro'lly frustrated by our 'slacking'. this is a public forum afterall, and all opinions are welcome- even the irritating ones! lol

if the software ur learning is maya, i can courier some learning resources to u (if u need them)
keep ya chin up bro!

@ aphek
great analysis/breakdown! so why arent u onboard?,

@ kemji
take apheks comments VERY seriously.
animating means 'bringing to life'- thats very different from making a character move!
good going!

credibility issues may be slowing responses.
wot protects the artist? n wot stops u from using a variation of his design without renumeration.
u could be drawing from a talent pool just 2 fish for creative ideas.

ppl that offer such terms/competitions as urs are established n credible outfits, that have a system of checks n balances in place to generate confidence and believability.

u may be 4 real, i am just airing an opinion.
good luck.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3D Graphic Guys And Gals: Wake Up Call by OKX(m): 11:16am On Jan 20, 2009
guys, this isnt just an attendance sheet for project members.

ppl have taken on specific tasks, n are expected to deliver on them. rememba we r all on a ticking time bomb

@ res
deliver ur sample animation, that at least is totally within ya power.
when uve set an example, every one else will fall in line or fall out.
4get the absentees for now!

wots d essence of creating more models when we cant do jack with the one we have?
a lot of ppl are watching our progress, n if i were one of them-frankly, id have written us off!

so like someone said- enough talk. if faith is failing, output will revive it!
someone has to motivate ur crew, sometimes its thru talk, but other times (like now) its thru work n output.

i (as well as most of us) am mega busy, n it doesnt cut it for me to log on here just to see idle chat n a roll call 4 teamies.

@ maxani
those sketches dont fly as image planes. back up a few pages n see a sample with the demigod face, n u need to include details as much as possible.
n try to join ur lines so we dont have to second guess what shapes u were imagining.
good job!

lol.
thanx 4 that totally unnecessary tip.

we are testing our process with a dummy model- very lo res and undetailed.
however, as i told kemji, i can introduce an awesome amt of detail on the present model by just skillful use of various mapping techniques without modelling in any more detail. its uv mesh is quite adequate.

u mean well tho.

@ res

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3D Graphic Guys And Gals: Wake Up Call by OKX(m): 12:05pm On Jan 02, 2009
@ res
nah.
motionbuilder n maya support .bvh or .fbx not .bip.
3d max exports those formats so it shouldnt be that much of a problem. if u use human ik in max, thats kool- thats common to both software.

i am exploring the possibility of parallel outputs on various software, that way we dont have to rely on a single source for output. thats why 2 platforms- its just experimental tho.

im a mayan, as are a couple others on the team; and believe me- unless u got a monster machine, no s/w gives u realtime feedback like motionbuilder does! u might want to explore it.
but lets start with this sample, we'll work out the kinks as we progress.

@ kemji
yes. this is a test model. however, a definition of wot u mean by 'childish' could help me understand u better.
in modeling, the rule is- never model what u can achieve by texturing.
the veins, scars and craggy skin features will be achieved with displacement maps, bump maps n textures.

if i can squeeze it in, i will show u how the same model can be made to appear with the above applied. also, we are not going 4 realistic in our art style. its a cross between that and comic- we are trying 2 reach all ages.

and ur critique is welcome.
we seem to have lost contact with neikid, he was meant to submit that first demigod , he still hasnt,

back @ res
