You can marry a woman that earns 5m in a month and won't smell her 1kobo. You can marry the one that earns 30k per month and she will be so supportive.
Its not just about how much you earn, but how well you manage what you earn. |

ENGLISH PHONICS/PHONETICS
A Quick Tutorial on the 'Schwa' 'ə' Sound
The Schwa sound - 'ə' is one of the sounds and characters of English phonics/phonetics. Interestingly, it is the most common sound in English Language.
Examples
Father = Fa.thə or 'fɑ:ðə (Phonetic transcription)
Mother = Mo.thə or 'mʌðə (Phonetic transcription)
Weather = Wea.thə or 'weðə (Phonetic transcription)
Whether = Whe.thə or 'weðə (Phonetic transcription)
Offer = O.ffə or 'ɒfə (Phonetic transcription)
Stammer = Stamm.ə or 'stæmə (Phonetic transcription)
September - December (Sep.tem.bə, Oc.to.bə, No.vem.bə, De.cem.bə) or (sep'tembə, ɒk'təʊbə, nəʊ'vembə, dɪ'sembə) all phonetic transcriptions.
Open = O.pen or 'əʊpən
Water = 'Wa.tə or 'wɔ:tə etc
The Schwa sound also modifies words like 'The' , 'Of', and 'And' when they feature in the MIDDLE of sentences and NOT used to begin them.
Example = Normally, the word 'The' is often transcribed as 'ðɪ' but when not starting a sentence, it becomes 'ðə'.
Normally, the word 'Of' is transcribed as 'ɒf' but in the middle of a sentence, it becomes 'əv'.
The word 'And' too normally goes as 'ɑ:nd' at the beginning of a sentence. But in the middle, it is written as 'ənd'.
Thanks for reading my brief tutorial about the Schwa sound and how it is used in English language.
Yours truly,
Artkat762

Artkat762: Oh i know! It was really just an example. I for one regard myself as a 'nudnik' for the type of diary I keep. Reason?
1 - I do not post in easily readable English and 2 - My posts are strictly about me and often boring.
I sure hope no one takes my earlier example of the word 'Nudnik' personal. If so, I tender sincere apologies in advance. What a word! lol. pls can you give me a small E-lecture on Schwas? thank you. |

zaynie: Olanna, I would so walk away too. Or I would stay and use the opportunity to get away with a million atrocities... like take a week leave to go visit my sick great grandma in the village in between the term.
Welcome Annibeteye and Matherfaro. Lol. Well she left. Too bad for the students, because we don't know how long it will take them to get a competent English teacher again. |

Good evening teachers. Something last week thursday, it actually made me to have a rethink about this profession.
A jss2 student came with his mum to school, they both stormed the principal's office with the mother threatening fire and brimstone. After some time, the principla sent for the junior english teacher. On getting to the office, she was told that the boy reported her to the mum that she hasn't entered their class since the term started. This happening on the 5th week. The was surprised, she asked the boy if he really said that, the boy stood his ground that she doesn't enter their class.
The teacher sent for the class prefect and two other students from that class.
prior to this, the principal has already started to tongue lash the teacher, calling her names from incompetent to wicked.
Well, the prefect and the students came; they were asked to bring there English notes, the teacher was asked to bring her lesson too. The student's notes and the teacher's lesson note corresponded. The students testified that the teacher frequents their class, even when she does have them. The boy started starmmering. The form teacher was summoned, she brought hwr register and it was seen that the boy is rarely in school. The mum couldn't say a word, the principal started to tongue lash her and the boy. The teacher there and then tended her resignatiimon letter. The school mgt and some of my colleauges pleaded with her not to take what happened to heart. But she was hell-bent on leaving. Her reason is; The school management can't stand up fpr there own. Since the principal said she is incompetent, she rather leave than to receive a salary she didnt work for. I felt the principal went too far, and the teacher is also going too far.
challenges like this are abound to come up once in awhile. No profession is void of challenges.
But me, i fear some children ohh. |

INTERMAN: Or will u marry me. Seiously I will love to marry a teacher, build a multimillion private school for her while I continue as a doctor and at the same time a part time Biology teacher of the school. She will be the proprietress. Reason is that Female teachers tend to be intelligent and disciplined. And teaching is a nice profession of which I like but love Medicine more. Nice plan. |

INTERMAN: Hmmm.. This is a BIG, FAT and ROBUST question. If it were me I will give him money to buy a new homework book to proof him right. Though not a teacher but I was once an Education student for 2 years before running to the medical line.I salute all ur works as teachers. Teaching is a flexible profession and I can still become one even without studying it as a course, by establishing a private school even as a Med doc. Will be their assistant BIOLOGY teacher and my wife the proprietress of the school. lol See family business ohh. |

A very tough one. First, i will put sentiments aside, reprimand him gently for fighting. Then tell him the best thing to do os to report such to me, and not fighting. Then thank him for standing up for me. But i have to let him know that fighting is not just the best way to do so.
Then for the assignment, i will pardon him and give him a grace of more time to write and submit. That is if, what the child said is true. |

zaynie: To all parents out there. Don't look down on your child's teacher even if she isn't doing what you expect.... she's really putting in great effort and you can help with encouraging words and providing some materials or books to support her. Let's also try to avoid insulting teachers especially at home in front of the kids. They usually give us feedback. One day one of my first graders came to me and said " my daddy said no Muslim will enter heaven". All the kids were like ahhhhhhh but Ms Zaynie is a Muslim and some other kids in class too. So I said " you know what Great, thank God your daddy doesn't decide who goes to heaven or not. God does".
One boy came to school and told his really busty teacher, " my daddy calls you cowbell "..... just imagine
Enjoy this rainy Sunday Its a common thing in our society. They don't realize the impart of those words on the teacher. When i was in the primary section, i asked them to bring the normal tissue and soap they are asked to bring each term, only for the boy to come to school the next day to tell me that the mum said am i stupid? Don't i know that the economy is hard. i really felt embarrased. Well i told him to tell the mum that i am not stupid, but only doing my job. |

MrMarvelous: Lol. I think teachers are looked down on by the way they present themselves to the society. Teaching is the most noble job i think anyone can take, whether formal or informal.
Funny enough this is my first teaching job, but I can tell you i already love it.
I'm based in Benin right now, what about you and what subjects are you taking? I think the problem is people's mentality towards the profession. I am based in Anambra. I teach government/social studies. |

MrMarvelous: Hello guys, I just got my first teaching job. I have been teaching Maths, F/Maths and Physics for about a month now. And here's what I observed about everything, students know you; every single thing about you, the way you talk, the way you walk, your confidence level (this is very essential), your body language etc.
Ma was a teacher, and I think I have her teaching genes...how else will I explain why Teaching is my love?
Any advice given will be highly appreciated. Welcome on board. The confidence level is one aspect i took time to build, esp when i was moved to the secondary section this term. I study my lesson topics countless times before going to class. i rehearse possible questions i will be asked and provide answers to them. Once i am in class, i put on a mean look. though there atimes the students make funny comments you can help but to laugh. Teaching is a nice job. But i still wonder why teachers are looked down upon. |

Artkat762: Indeed Olanna!
Teachers must act as role models at all times. I am gradually boosting my tolerance level because normally, I could get hot tempered and physical. It would be so absurd to vent my anger on these innocent youngsters. Imagine the harm that would be caused?
And em..in reply to your questions, I'd say the pay isn't worth my stress. The pay is very little but I take solace in the facts that I foremost love to teach and that the school is a trekkable distance.
Thanks for sharing what you teach. I've had no issues with handing-out punishments so far. The erring students comply. Not that I enjoy punishing my students though. I only use that as a last resort. So how do you then cope with your SSS 1 students? Do share please.
I pray I'll never have to flog my students....ever.
So help me GOD. The highest punishment i can give to them is to send the erring one(s) out of the class. I also try to curtail the level of familiarity i have with some of them. Its not really easy. |

Teaching has exposed me to so many things about i know nothing about.
I am more compassionate towards teenagers and children.
I tend to be more careful about how i talk, how i dress and how i relate fellow humans, because teachers are role models. |

zaynie: As I was saying........
Dara is a chubby and dark girl with angelic face, a wide smile and awesome attitude. You can't help but fall in love with her. She is obviously spoilt rotten; being the last child and only daughter. She is the lazy one who is so neat-ey she doesn't like to stain her hands with food, paint or anything. You would find her rushing to the bathroom to wash her hands all the time. OCD much?
Koko is the baby of the class. Born to his mother in her 50s, she is pretty coocoo about him. Don't be surprised to catch her peeping into the classroom for good 30 minutes or watching us from the CCTV.... . He has a separate bag for snacks.... as in school bag filled with snacks and then his main bag with his change of clothes. Come and see snacks na..... carrot bar, pear bar.... ask me how many will the boy eat? Nada!
IT is the eccentric one. She's on dreads and dresses bohemian. I firmly believe she always insists on picking her own clothes cos the dressing no be for here. She has a problem with her speech but she is one of my highest flyers. When she sights me in the morning, she drops whatever she is doing and runs to me.... screaming "Mejaina! " Always! When someone hurts her, she comes looking for me even if a thousand teachers have already begged her. When I offend her, she gives me the cold shoulder and isn't afraid of all my threats...... I just love that girl. And she always makes a mess of her food........very messy eater.
Deel has black Arab blood in him. Black and handsome in a way that will be heart mushing in future. But theres a hitch, he's a whiner.... Eat; he will whine. Write;whine.. He's beginning to shake out of it sha..... When he wants me to help open his bottle and I insist on the magic word, he throws the "please" with a shrug or lip squeeze.... it's like " Oya take the please and eat it o! "
Trey is fair and very cool. He is always well behaved and all the girls in the class are after him. I just watch them in amazement as they fall over themselves to sit beside him during the circle time. He likes Angie tho.
Angie is the love of Trey's life and Trey is her obsession! "Mejaina, Trey is sad" "Mejaina, Trey don't wantu play with me" . And the way her eyes shoots darts when other people engage Trey Nko? I had enough of it and separated them but she always finds a way to wriggle her way to his side at lunch and play time. Apart from that she is really sweet and started Mejaina.... she also loves sausages and when she opens her flask, she'll be like "Chochage! "
Nam is the new boy. He doesn't talk much but takes so much joy in pulling down all you hang. Then I caught him talking to himself in really clear deep voice and I was like .
Every class always has goons, ours is no exception. I introduce to you Demi and Kiki..... 2 boys that are equivalent to 20 boys. When they come in, they first hail and hug. "Kiki!!!!!! " "Demi!!!! " they run to each other and hug, hold themselves and jump in circles. From then on, it is Mejaina that will be chasing and grabbing them both by their hands. They and Mide are the Kings of our Thinking Corner. Those 2 Ehn...... serious trouble. They will just start screaming for no solid reason and it will be interspersed by giggles....
Now you've met all 14. The gist can flow easily now. with the characters you just described, the school isn't an average one. |

I detest flogging students too and rather adopt punishment. Works for me. All these subjects for one person? Hope the pay is worth the stress. Punishment, The junior ones will obey. but the ss1 students..... it is well. I teach government and social studies. |

Nice write-up. You obviously love to teach no doubt. Em..I am actually new in the teaching profession. I take JSS 1 - JSS 3 students and was wondering if there was any forum on Nairaland where teachers could connect, share experiences and ideas?
Your response would be most kind.
Thank you. i teach Jss1- ss1. I can't wait to hand over the ss1 class to someone else. Its so hectic. Those children feel i am to young to be a teacher. They look down on me alot. Personally, i don't know to flog. Nice idea though. Thread for teachers. |
