Lather, rinse, repeat
“Why should we create a system where Liverpool faces
Real Madrid for ten straight years? Who wants to see
that every year?”
Anyone who watched Bayern Munich vs Paris Saint
Germain in the last round of the Champions League was
in awe of its brilliance and entertainment. Two of the best
sides in Europe going toe to toe for 180 minutes, with
PSG just getting over the line. Although this was great,
some of that greatness is shared because we do not get
to see it very often.
From Barcelona’s point of view, the Clasico has only been
played in European competition once, Culers have only
travelled to Anfield twice in the last 15 years, and AC
Milan have not played the Catalan side since 2014.
These ties are like Christmas when they come around for
the fans and playing them every year takes that magic
away, almost like having Christmas every day and who
wants that or as Jurgen Klopp puts it, who wants to see it
repeated tirelessly before it becomes eye-gaugingly
boring.
There is also the chance that these games do not live up
to expectation. Take Manchester United’s record against
the other participating English clubs, for example.
Out of the nine games played so far this season, five have
finished 0-0. Not all these teams will go toe to toe like
Bayern and PSG did, and that is a problem because that
is the product they are trying to sell to the world.
5 – Only Manchester United (6) have drawn more Premier
League matches 0-0 than Brighton (5) this season, while
this was Everton’s first goalless draw of the campaign,
leaving Sheffield United as the only side still yet to play
out a 0-0 draw. Stalemate. #BHAEVE pic.twitter.com/

Clubs such as Tottenham and Atletico Madrid are
notorious for playing these big games with a low block
and trying to catch their opponents with fast transitions.
Some of the joy for the fans of these clubs is that they get
a release from this when they play teams such as Burnley
or Eibar in their domestic leagues. Having to watch your
team defend every game they play in the season sounds
grim, not only to their fans but for everyone involved.
Different styles of playing makes football what it is, and
there is nothing wrong with compact defensive teams. But
it goes without saying that it does not make for the best
TV, and it stops football fans from seeing the other side of
these teams against the smaller clubs, which is part of
their story.
The day the Super League was announced, Atalanta, a
small working-class club from Bergamo, defeated the
prestigious Juventus 1-0 to deal a blow to their
Champions League qualification hopes. A club deemed not
good enough, not prestigious enough. It was one of those
plot twists we all love, a plot twist we will never get to
see again. |
Joan laporte words “There are business solutions that can be used to a much greater extent. There is such an option as the European Super League, which can bring a lot of income to the club.” IngeniousLeez: |

Albanian
Superliga
leading scorer
Patrick Friday
Eze has
claimed that
he would be
open to
playing for the
Albania
national team
as he has
been
continuously
overlooked by Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
Eze is having an outstanding season at FK Kukësi,
scoring 12 goals in the league and also found the net
against Slavia Sofia in the first qualifying round of the
Europa League back in August 2020.
The Kaduna-born attacker first made his name in Europe
at Serbian Superliga club FK Mladost Lučani, ending
the 2014-2015 campaign as the top scorer in the division
with 15 goals.
Eze has no caps for the Nigerian national teams and the
1992-born player was not age-eligible to represent the
country in the 2016 Olympic Games.
Speaking to our colleagues at Tirana-based television
news channel Ora News, Eze said : "I never had the
opportunity to play any category, I never played in any
category for Nigeria.
"Of course if Albania call me I will come and happily
play".
Asked to name one team he wants to play for, Eze
responded : For the respect of other clubs, all the clubs
here are good, but my vision actually is to go to a better
league and a better situation where I can express more
of my talent.
"With much respect for Albanian teams but I intend to
see much more."
The 28-year-old Eze previously had spells with clubs in
Ivory Coast, Serbia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi
Arabia, Turkey, Poland and Jordan before his switch to
Kukesi last summer. |

'ProFootballDB', the BeSoccer
database, has published a list of
the top six scorers at the age of
21. Ronaldo Nazario leads the
way. Kylian Mbappe is in second
position. Surprisingly, Leo Messi
and Cristiano Ronaldo are well off
the pace.
Kylian Mbappe has turned 21 this Friday,
Therefore, 'BeSoccer's database,
'ProFootballDB', has investigated in what
position the French striker is in the list of top
scorers.
After an exhaustive analysis, 'ProFootballDB'
has published the top six goalscorers up to
the age of 21. Ronaldo Nazario leads the
way with 115 goals.
Mbappe is just 12 goals behind on 103 and
he can already claim to be a PSG star despite
his youth. He is on the wish list of clubs like
Real Madrid and Barcelona .
Precisely Neymar , ex-Barca and Mbappe's
teammate, is in third with 80 goals, well below
the figures of the Brazilian and the
Frenchman: 35 less than his compatriot and 23
less than his teammate.
Sergio Aguero is in fourth place with 78 while
Romelu Lukaku is level in fifth with Raul on
73.
In addition, Karim Benzema had netted 57
times at that age while Robert Lewandowski
had scored 44. Leo Messi was on just 42, 11
more than Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Surprisingly.
Cristiano Ronaldo had just 27 goals to his
name when he was 21 years old. |

The Dutch starlet had been long linked to a
move to Barcelona before eventually signing
for the then Italian champions, Juventus.
This was when his very close friend, Frenkie
De Jong moved to Catalonia after Ajax, their
parent club, impressed the world with a
stunning performance in UEFA Champions
League. Juventus had also signed Cristiano
Ronaldo from Real Madrid a season ago and
had intentions to dominate Europe.
Fast forward to two seasons, the Bianconeri
currently sit at 4th place in the league table
fighting for a spot in the Champions League
next season. They have also been eliminated
from the UCL by the lowly Porto. It seems
that the project that was started three years
ago has ended in a rather disappointing
fashion.
This has left the Dutch defender stranded at
a club where he can not realize his dreams
of winning trophies. Reportedly, he wants a
move away from the Turin-based club and
Barcelona could be one of the possible
destinations on his mind.
The Juventus center-back is reportedly
struggling to settle in Turin and a move to
Barcelona amongst the favorable faces of
Ronald Koeman and Alfred Schreuder will
do him a lot good. His extremely wonderful
relationship with De Jong will also play a big
role in a possible move.
The Dutch defender was out for starting of
the season due to surgery on his shoulder,
which clearly had an impact on Juventus’s
performance as they struggled to get a good
start in the league. His impact at the back
was visible once he returned. The Italian
outfit went on to have a nine-match
unbeaten streak as soon as he returned.
Another important factor in his transfer could
be the involvement of Mino Raiola. It was
his super-agent who convinced him that a
move to Juventus will benefit him more back
in the summer of 2018. However, Raiola
shares excellent ties with Barça’s current
president Joan Laporta, and could surely
discuss a move benefitting both the parties.
The biggest problem that the Catalan club
would face is how they will approach the
move from a financial point of view. The
Dutch youngster currently has a market
value of €85m, and with the signing of Eric
Garcia only a formality now, this surely is a
number that could stop the pursuit even
before it starts. The newly elected board also
plans to make a star signing in the attacking
department, and it can be said without a
doubt that it’s very difficult seeing the present
scenarios to finalize both the deals. |
Footballing great Cristiano Ronaldo shared a
few words of motivation for Ansu Fati on
Instagram. In November 2020, soon after
turning 18, Fati suffered a terrible knee injury
which has sidelined him for five months of
action already, with no set return date.
He had undergone the knife for his meniscus
tear; however, his knee did not respond well,
and he had to get it sutured once again.
Recently, there have been reports saying
that he may need to undergo a third surgery,
depending on how his knee responds to
fifteen days of activities involving overloading
and working the knee.
Fati’s fellow Nike athlete Ronaldo has
shared some words of encouragement for
the young Spaniard. Reposting Fati’s post on
his own Instagram story, the Portuguese
captioned it with “Come on @ansufati,
you’ll be back soon! Go for it!”
Before his injury, the Spanish winger was
blazing up La Liga, having scored four goals
in seven games. He also won the Player of
The Month award in September. The young
starlet’s combination of quick feet and runs
in behind timed to perfection make him an
unbearable threat for any defence. Fati is
also surprisingly decisive in the final third,
seemingly capable of finishing most chances
presented to him. For the first few months of
the season, the youngster was Barcelona’s
best performing player, arguably ahead of
even Lionel Messi.
It is always encouraging to see such
cooperation and words of kindness from
athletes across different teams. Much like
Ronaldo, we are all hoping that the 18-year-
old can return to action as soon as possible.
The Garnet and Blue have lacked a clinical
finisher apart from Messi, and Fati is well
and truly capable of providing a consistent
and reliable goal threat to the team. All
Culés await the prospect of Fati at the end of
a Messi through-ball with delight. With the
potential that the Spaniard has shown, he
can truly become one of the best in the
world if he can manage to stay relatively
injury-free. |
Joan Laporta has a clear plan to make Barcelona
what they once, and recently, were. He wants the
Catalans to retain Lionel Messi's services, and to
become European champions again.
As well as that, he wants those attending at the
Camp Nou post-pandemic to have something on
the pitch that excites them.
All three of those desires are connected to his
desire to beat the competition in pursuit of Erling
Haaland 's services this summer. The Norwegian
forward is Laporta's top priority in the transfer
window, and he met with the player's father Alf-
Inge Haaland and agent Mino Raiola on
Thursday in Catalonia.
During the meeting, Laporta make his intentions to
sign the Borussia Dortmund forward clear, but he
knows that there is stiff competition facing him.
After the meeting in Barcelona, Raiola and the
senior Haaland went to meet with Real Madrid ,
and they'll chat to other clubs in the coming days
as well.
Laporta is going to make a big signing this
summer, and he wants it to be Haaland . He and
Mateu Alemany that, despite their financial
troubles, they will be in a position to give the
striker a good contract that will leave him feeling
valued.
Despite the president's efforts, it won't be easy to
sign him. Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool,
Manchester City, Manchester United and
Juventus are all in healthier positions financially,
and they're all interested. He's valued at around
180 million euros, but Laporta is convinced that
he'll be able to fund the deal.
Good feelings
Barcelona will do everything they possibly can to
sign Haaland, but they'll need to be sure of his
desire to play at the Camp Nou before going all-in.
Laporta ended the meeting feeling relatively
happy, and his good relationship with Mino Raiola
could benefit him in these negotiations as they
advance. |
