Politics / Re: Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? by OldWizard1: 1:53am On Mar 24, 2013
Prof Corruption: Achebe achieved a lot for himself and helped promote the cause of black race by attacking the image of Africa solidly embossed on the world's bressplate by the West. This he achieved in two ways. One by providing a counter narrative in form of Things Fall Apart and two, by attacking Conrad's Heart of Darkness, a Western novel that portrays African as sub-human. Achebe's contributions in that light are quite imperishable. Any argument to the contrary is more or less a personal opinion that's not rooted in logic or logicality. Infact, that contribution is the sole reason why he's highly celebrated.

However, that does not mean Achebe is a kind of God whose actions are infallible. He can not write on Biafran war, a war in which he was an active participant and indeed a propagandist mouthpiece of the secessionist Biafra state and expect everybody to take him by his word even when the book is full of secondary sources as references and indeed when preponderances of neutral/external work are against his views. He can not write a political opinion as a fact. The entire book was looking for evidence to make a point, his "impressions", "there are people who believe that" etc. Quite frankly, it was wrong to extend his hatred for Awolowo to the whole Yorubas. Because slice anyhow, Yorubas were not in anyway responsible for the civil war, had no joint destiny with Igbo and had no obligation to neither dictate nor subsist to Igbo agenda.

The issue of supremacy in African literature is at times laughable. Achebe was not an all rounder! He was a good novelist, period. He wouldn't in any way even come to close to 100th position to Soyinka in Drama and Soyinka won Nobel Prize as a Dramatist not novelist. Also, Achebe's strength was closer to zero in poetry. So when people say, the great Iroko has fallen, yes as a pioneer true. But when folks start describing him in the superlative, the best, the best of best, it's not rooted at best in literary wisdom or logic. Being the first to publish a great book does not in anyway make you the best, automatically, in everything. To a common man, it's confusing but to folks who eat, drink and fck literature, the difference is glaringly clear.

good comment, highly cerebral.

Whichever way, we need to celebrate this man. As for me, a world acclaimed Nigerian is dead, let's mourn but still celebrate his life. Na una sabi we da u call am Biafran or Yoruba hater. All the obituaries I have read naa Nigerian Author full am.

Politics / Re: African People's Congress Unveils Logo by OldWizard1: 4:16pm On Mar 14, 2013
bayooooooo: The trick is not new. Register APC so the real APC could adopt ACPN and eventually the two names/acronyms on ballot paper would create confusion. Or if INEC registers APC, this fraudulent one would adopt a close acronyn just to steal or divide votes that should rightly belong to APC. African People's Congress indeed.

It's a low level politics that lacks any real strategic value. All real APC needs be doing is mouthing the same slogan that we insist on registering APC while consolidating on the merger process. They should not be stampeded into rushing the process without getting the fundamentals right. When all the i's and t's have been dotted and crossed respectively, they should adopt a new name and register it. It's people, not name, that make a party.

It's even good PDP shows its criminal hands very early.

They are making a BIG FOOOL of themselves for all to see. The viewers are seeing them for who they are and they are actually doing GEJ a big service. Just relax!

Anyway, many of these stuffs people argue back and forth on Nairaland would not even count in 2015. 2015 is still far, there is still a whole year in between and a day is too long in politics.

Prof Corruption:

High sounding words with zero content! Silly this, foolish that, staunch this retard that without addressing the core of the discussion.
A better response from you would have been, it's still a PDP project. Period.

How on earth do you expect an administration to conceptualize, design and begin implementation of power policy without it being in phases? Where has that been achieved even in entire universe? Does Nigeria have the financial wherewithal to cough out the enormous resources needed to position the sector once and yet you talk causally of action without back up? Why has he not released funds needed to jack up the power generation to the minimum 10000MW needed to get the manufacturing base going in Nigeria since he is now the super man of power generation? Would there have been your emotional phase II without phase I?

I understand your point. But let's give GEJ a pat on the back for this achievement. Would it be correct if someone also build phase III tomorrow without acknowledging how phase II came about? For building phase II, small or big, he deserves some commendation. But my problem with PDP is this is too small for a whooping 14years in power! We should be investing massively in power generation every year.

Again, it took barely 3 years for this project to be completed from inception . . .

They can import more bombs and ammos like Hussaini Dei Dei and co are currently doing to force us to vote for them . . . .

No be only APC na ABC . . . . .

Which three years? PDP has been in power for 14 years and there is nothing to show for it.

jmaine:

The current feat took barely 3 years, so where is your 12 years coming from undecided . . . .

Well, is He not a PDP man again? Which government is in power since 1999? Is that not about 14years? If it takes them 14 years to build this, then they are not doing well. Let try APC. Vote for APC.

Yes, do nothing like this completed 500MW power project . . .

Kudos dude, i like your spirit . . . .

Kudos for completing 500MW. But in how many years? We should be waiting for another 12 years before PDP commissions another 500MW? Is that what you want?
Well if someone needs a billion naira but given one naira, it's more or less nothing.

Igbo should forget new state. We ll not approve it. Full stop.

The Western Region has been balkanised to -8 states(Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta plus Lagos former capital) and Eastern Region-9 states(Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia,Anambra, Imo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River). If any, the Western Region should be clamoring for one more state and not the Eastern Region?

And for On shore/ off shore dichotomy, GEJ presidency expires in 2015 and with it does the dichotomy.

Politics / Re: Fulani Herdsmen Demand Land Rights In 36 States by OldWizard1: 9:04pm On Sep 09, 2012
It's dead on arrival. Nobody as the nation currently stands will approve of such measure. An average southerner-in or out of government- sees Fulani herdsmen as bloodthirsty, arrogant and trouble makers who go about destroying farmers crop without provocation. That image defeats the whole stuff.

I think guys in the North should move beyond this pedestrian idea of advocating right of ways for something that's unreasonable, illogical and even myopic. What the folks need is education-they have the right to have their children as bankers, lawyers, civil servant, medical doctors, IT professionals and not mere meat producer for the entire nation while others consolidate their hold on economy by buying up the entire country in the name of privatization. We are not doing Fulani any favor even if the right of way is granted, it's more of a disservice in a long term to the well being of Fulanis.

It would be sheer hypocrisy for folks to think Nigeria current structure will always be like this. While others are preparing for some form of federalism or eventual break up of the country, we continue to advocate policies that make up dependent on the south to the detriment of our development. Why can't state governments in the North modernize this nomadic farming? Why can't the wealthy Fulani run this business since they understand the background? Or why can't some of nomadic farmers come together and run a partnership? What's wrong with the North? Why can't we develop the region? Even if we agree that the south is less expensive for the simple fact that vegetation is readily available, why can't it be state to state agreement between Sokoto and Enugu or Kano and Osun for instance? Our people travel all the way to Europe and America in the name of looking for investors while simple and obvious opportunities as this case are neglected. Don't be surprised in future if any southerner states dabble into this business and put the so called nomadic Fulanis out of business.

At this age if anything, we should be aggressive in sending our children to schools, have affirmative concessions to have them educated so that this form of illiteracy motivated insecurity ravaging the North can be avoided in future. The world has gone beyond pastoral farming and we must move with the world. We must get the Fualni settled so that their children can go to school and come back to improve and modernize this primitive way of life.

@Bayooooooo.

You have a good post but only disagree on power. There is nothing to write home about about power in this country. Today Dumbo Jumbo wants to privatise, tomorrow Dumbo Jumbo wants to build power plants. They are confused. They are still owning PHCN workers meanwhile they continue to embezzle good money on daily basis.
If a government can not even provide security for the citizenry, such government lacks legitimacy to govern.

People should vote wisely in 2015. Meanwhile efforts are in top gear to see if Dumbo Jumbo can be impeached or peacefully eased out of power. His administration is corrupt, incompetent, profligate etc.

Politics / Re: Ndigbo Wont Vote For ACN In Lagos by OldWizard1: 6:48pm On Jul 22, 2012
Igbo are politically naive. Do they think this approach will fetch them anything? If anything, it would make the goons in Lagos more strategic in reducing the influence of Igbo further. Don't be surprise to see some funny economic policies in future!

If they are wise and strategic they should work with Akabueze to advance his political interests beyond commissioner level. They should prompt him to vie for Senatorial ticket or something in that line. It's easier to sell someone who is part of success story than using a party with a bad public perception to threaten a well favored party.

Rewind one more time!!!

A picture is worth more than a thousand words. Edo people coupled with the popularity of Oshiomole destroyed the rigging machinery of the incompetent clueless moronic Jonathan.

We should praise him for not declaring his assets publicly as Yar'Adua did. We should praise him for having his wife appointed as Perm Sec in Absentia. We should praise him for the largest fraud in Nigeria history, the subsidy fraud that he used to run his cronies and oil 2011 election. We should praise him for receiving his share of the Malabu oil fraud. We should praise him for using soldiers to suppress peaceful protesters in January. We should praise him for the atmmosphere of insecurity that have enveloped the nation. We should praise him indeed.
