Also i know a masters student (who has finished) , doing site security job. He works on Mondays, Fridays (4:30pm-8am) and Saturdays and Sundays (8pm-8am). After tax, he is making about £1,250 on this job and he is also doing a cleaning job Monday to Friday (8-2) where he gets at least another guaranteed £700 after tax. There is no way he will spend more than £900 as student monthly (He stays in Scotland). Sso he can at lest save £1000 for the 5 months he has left on his visa while he still applies for jobs.

Even if he does not get a job, if he leaves UK, he will have at least £5000 he is taking back home with him which is not bad to settle down with in naija. the point is, i hope you can hustle well and also read well to get a good result (that is the primary reason you are in UK).

I can go on and on but i will stop here.

@Olowo b thanks for the response bro. I can afford the security license but I just want to know the range of pay and what to expect for a start after spending over £400.if it's really worth it.
How long is the security license valid?

Movement of money has being a major problem. Plz how do i move cash or transfer without having to feel this forex problems so much from the secondary market.

Thanks.
@dynamitehimself, the security license is valid for 3 years. is it worth it? YES

I will give you 2 scenarios. please note, i am assuming you are coming for your masters.....

After you graduate

After your masters degree, you will normally have automatic 4 months visa but it is likely your program will finish even before the 1 year, so you may end up having 5 or 6 months instead of 4 months. Now this is the deal, i do not know how well you can hustle, but if you have a SIA badge, i will tell you to just do site security jobs which normally starts from 4pm or 4;30pm till 7:30am. The advantage is that you can also be doing cleaning job in the morning while also doing security job in the afternoon. Trust me when i say the site security job is the easiest job for a student. They are basically paying you to sit down and just do hourly patrols. The site will be fully secured and fenced. Even if you see thief, all you need to do is call the police. For here, if you see thief, you cannot beat him or shout.examples of sites you may work on are demolition jobs, construction of houses etc by law, they must have a security on site.

OR

During school

You can do security as a bouncer in clubs or pubs (this is more difficult but some people love it). You will work majorly on Fridays and Saturdays and will be getting at least 10 hours every weekend. club or pub bouncer jobs normally pays higher. They pay at least £9 ( i heard security officers in London collect even £13 per hour).

I am not telling you what i have not done or what i heard, i am telling you what i have done before and most people do it here (doing 2 jobs). Even while schooling, if you do site security job, it gives you the opportunity to read as you will be in a cabin with at least a heater and a microwave and of cos a generator. site security jobs normally pay minimum wage which is £7.2 currently.

Also, during christmas period, there are always jobs for security guys as they will always need you on christmas, new year etc. before i forget, any holiday here in UK, you will paid double. christmas and new year is double pay guaranteed.

Remember i told you to try and mix wit church members and people who have stayed longer in UK and are upright (please avoid people who have no future). The reason i told you is because you may also get cash side jobs as a security officer. That is all i can tell you on a public forum. When you get to UK, talk to people and hopefully, they will help you out.

Finally, you will make the money for your badge back within 1 month once you get a security job. Also, having the SIA badge will give you flexibility and allow you to be able to do 2 jobs. If you have the money, please go for it.

All the best bro.

Pls how can I study in UK for free?
Is it postgraduate studies or undergraduate studies? Undergraduate is possible... I think Westminster Univeristy gives full scholarship albeit I think it is very limited (maybe 1 or 2 spaces) and here are some bodies that offer scholarships provided you can give a convincing personal statement in some cases.

For post graduate studies, it may also be possible or you may ge very very good discounts and scholarships depending on your results.

Let me also state here that you should also look at Canada cos UK schools are very stingy with scholarships and discounts. schools in Canada will give you more options. Cheers .

@dynamitehinself, Claremont has done justice to all the questions you raised and I could not have said it better but I will add to the issue of PCC I raised in the other thread.

Please note that PCC is only valid for 3 months. If you will not be applying for the security license within 3 months of entering the UK, I will suggest you do not get it cos PCC will cost you nothing less than 10k in Naija.

Also please note that to get an SIA badge (security license in UK) is expensive. You will need to pay for training and exam and also the license itself. This will cost you nothing less than £400. This could be a huge amount for a student just entering the UK and with this forex wahala.

So if you know you cannot pay that amount within 3 months of entering UK, then do not get the PCC in Naija (so that you don't just waste the money in getting it and it expires).

Other jobs for students in UK that I know of do not require PCC.

Let me give you a hint, if you have the money, I will recommend you get the SIA badge. Trust me, security job is one of the best for students in UK (most especially security jobs on construction sites).

Also, once you enter UK, please try and join a church ASAP, you will need people who have been in that particular area long before you, they will tell you some secrets which many people will not tell you on a public forum. Thank God you can play church instruments. Infact, church can even give you a job on the side

Would definitely be voting to leave EU. Those people from other countries like Romania, Poland etc are the ones really sucking up all the benefits in the UK. Infact, cos the PM cannot send these nationals away due to EU laws, he is making life difficult for citizens of other countries who are not in EU.

For the selfish love I have for all my brothers from Africa, I vote for UK to leave EU.

Also, if UK should leave the EU, I am very sure that all international students will smile cos in 2,3 or 4 years time, post study will return.

Imagine been given extra 2 years to work after study like it was in time past? That is the way it is supposed to be after paying millions to study. Students should be allowed to gain work experience before going back to their countries.

So as recently as 2008, people were loaning out their cards with passwords abi? If i hear. And no one was seeing him withdraw cos it was hidden, abi?

You can lie for africa.

Anyway, my atm used to pay me 19k every midnight. Thats everyday. This was 2002 or 2003. Then it was ATMC that had d most machines- atm consortium n their machines wrre always down. And u couldnt use an interswitch machine on atmc anyway.

So i was always all over school n lagos looking for a blinking machine. So i got 19k(which was my final balance before it started overpaying me) for more than a month.

Then i got greedy and paid in 60k, so i would be getting the maximum allowable balance everyday.

Then...it ended. Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

We werr d early adopters of technology and as it is with any such technologies, you either lose or gain wen u r an early adopter.
You are very slow..... It was MEDILAG (students environment) The guy went to withdraw the money around 11pm -12am according to him. He would remove the flyer and replace it. He did it continuously for about a week.

For people that have him their cards, he gave them 5k each as compensation and they later changed their passwords. It will aslo interest you to know that the guy was YAHOO boy then so he also had multiple bank accounts.

I have no reason to lie. Finally, if you doubt anything, always ask politely instead of calling someone names. Have a nice day sir.
BusinessRe: Has The ATM Ever Short-paid Anyone Before? by OlowoB(m):
Well I only know of overpaid. Back then in LUTH, a friend of mine went to the machine and wanted to withdraw 10k (this machine is opposite FOODIE, a very popular restaurant in LUTH) after slotting in the card to withdraw the money, he discovered the machine paid him an extra 1k.

He slot in his card again and tried to withdraw another amount and the same thing happened. My guy who can think so fast grin just quickly ran to the cyber cafe and printed a flyer (COMPSSSA) saying DO NOT USE this machine cos it is out of order. He later went to go and pay more money into his account and also went to go and collect people's cards from them, using theirs also.

Infact, he made close to like 200k back then. He only told me after the deal had been done. I felt like slapping him. This was like 2008 when guys were so bad gan.

Special shout out to all Medilag students here 2005-2010.

Spot on. Infact, the NI nos (the letter with the number) is also important as it can be used as proof of adress for opening bank account.

On the other hand, since this is "the giving mood" according to the poster above,let me add this;

If you are a guy (or you are a gal and don't mind doing security jobs) coming to the UK, please try and get a police character certificate (PCC) when coming along. This certificate will help you in easily applying for your SIA badge here in UK (security license). I think the PCC can be obtained at Police Headquarters, Obalende. I would not say more than this for now so as not to change the topic of discuss.

Brother when next you are changing money from pounds to naira in the uk my advice is that you should try azimo website. you'll get a good rate without paying any commission. just my 2cents (although your 'transfer boss' rate myt look higher' but when you do ur calculations considering the commission trust me u'll be able to decide for urself)
Big brethren, I know azimo well, infact I am registered on the app. I have used them close to 7 times now in transferring money but I can tell you, there are better rates out there.

As at this moment of typing, azimo's rate is
1 naira = £475.2 at 0 fee.

While transferboss is 1 naira = 495 at a fee of about £15 for £500.

You will agree with me that there is no way azimo's rate is better from the above explanation. And of course, the higher the money, the higher the difference.

Also note that as at January, February this year, azimo was charging about £2.99 for every transaction ( I still used them this year), they only just stopped charging when they discovered there were far better rates from their competitors.

The only thing I like about azimo is the safety and the money back guarantee they have. Asides that, there are better rates from other companies out there.

Cheers.

Yeah that's so right. I will make a few consultations to see if its gonna be possible. But basically,is it possible for someone in the UK who still operates a Naira account, give out some pounds in exchange for some Naira at a cheaper rate outside the blackmarket rate?
Lol you are funny o, almost everyone in UK will be holding the pounds close to them. It will take a miracle for you to get the kind of offer you are looking for (anything is possible though). Even if you get cheaper, the difference may just be about 5 naira (I pray you get though cos it will make life easier for you)

As for me, I can't even give anyone pounds for now, cos as at today transfer boss rate is 491 naira to a pound.

I will be coming yo Naija in August and I am even thinking of bypassing these transfer guys here in uk and directly change my pounds to naira when I get down at Muritala so as to get a higher exchange rate grin grin grin

Please boss can u explain better, i kinda don't understand the bolded area. What does she mean invariably? Thanks.
according to the poster @thababe she claimed it was possible to actually use Form A to pay for private accommodation provided you have an account officer that is understanding. She suggested the idea due to the increasing forex so as to save cost for students.

The advantages are (1) You can pay using form A for about 6 months provided your bank is wiling to help out (thababe did it according to her) (2) Official CBN rate (3) since you are paying for private accommodation, you are not really bound to any contract like school accommodation

The downside (i) You need some one you really trust in UK to check the room for you (2) It is a dangerous means cos you could be swindled.

I have always suggested for students to make sure they see rooms physically before paying (except school accommodation) any cash for private rooms (means they have to get to Uk first before paying), but because of this fluctuating forex, students should try and look for the best way to minimise cost. Hence, they can try out thababe's option.

Just came to peep at this thread as it helped me alot when I was planning to come to the UK. Now im almost done with my studies and on my way home in about a month. The exchange rate has not been helpful but one of the best things I did was paying my rent (private accomo) 6 months ahead using form A. If you have a helpful account officer then whether private or school owned your accomodation while you are in school falls under form A. My gtb people refused to help so I transfered my funds to Fidelity and they did it for me.

My case is unique as I am here with young children but once you are steadfast God will make a way. It took me a while to get a job as I was being picky (beacuse of child care I wanted a job I could do from home)...eventually I got one through the university that allows me work from my laptop...(an IT company so alot of things they do are done remotely). I have been very fortunate as I found someone through a friend who helped me househunt before I came to Exeter and I paid before I even got here...fortunate cus UI dont adbvise people to pay for what they have not seen but I thank God the person who helped was very picky and I got a lovely place.

I live in a very white town but its been cool so far and no regrets. All the best for those making plans
at the bolded will be very useful for students coming to UK this September. Students coming over should try and talk to your account officer, try and talk to as many banks as possible. Lastly, anything is possible for anyone who tries.

What do you mean by being bound to them?
You will be asked to sign a contract..... Could be 10, 12 or whatever months depending on the school. Once you do, you cannot leave until the agreed period on the contract has expired.

For example, If you sign 10months, you cannot leave the school accommodation until after the 10months.

School accommodations in UK are expensive, but it's possible to pay for it via Form A(which is the official rate) .
Staying off camp is cheaper but no access to form A, which means an exchange rate of N420 to 1 pound.

So on the nut shell, which is a better option?
The choice is yours bro, do the calculations yourself and make a choice.

Also note, if you are using school accommodation, you are going to be bound to them by a contract.
