This seems like a poor, low cost housing arrangement where they have shared kitchen and shared toilet and bathroom. The likely indication is that he got the knife from one of the rooms or kitchen in the apartment there. It could explain while neither of the brother or wife could escape. And also why he couldn't be stopped by the neighbours.

The most possible explanation is he got the knife from the same place. Most of the low cost nothern house are one room or a room and a parlour where the sitting room, kitchen and bedroom are all in thesame place...more like a studio room except these ones have shared toilet. The knife will not be far and difficult to locate.

Remember that they can not just run out naked the usual thing they will do is to start begging and blaming the devil while they buy time to put on atleast their underwears. Moreover, non of them can imagine what will come next.
