Nairaland GeneralSmart Guy Buys Ebola.com Domain In 2008, Now Sells For $150k by oludashmi(op): 4:36pm On Oct 14, 2014
An entrepreneur in Las Vegas paid for Ebola.com domain in 2008 and is now selling it for $150,000. Jon Schultz, who monitors a number of ‘disease domains’ from his home in Las Vegas, bought the domain and now reselling it.

The businessman also owns birdflu.com and H1N1.com, as well a domain for the deadly mosquito-borne disease Chikungunya and another for the Ebola-like Marburg virus. He paid $13,500 for his Ebola domain four years ago and has been waiting for the moment to sell.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Mr Schultz said he felt that a six figure sum was more than reasonable for Ebola.com.

‘According to our site meter, we’re already doing 5,000 page views per day just by people typing in Ebola.com to see what’s there.

‘We’re getting inquiries every day about the sale of it. I have a lot of experience in this sort of domain business, and my sense is that $150,000 is reasonable.

Mr Schultz, who also owns terror.com, PotassiumIodide.com and fukushima.com, appeared untroubled about the issue of making money from a human tragedy.

CelebritiesFlakky Ididowo Denies Snaching Folade’s Husband, See Her Explanation by oludashmi(op): 6:46am On Oct 10, 2014
Ronke Odsanya, aka Flakky Ididowo, has opened up on her rumoured marriage to a US based man, Femi Anibaba. She also denied snatching the man from one Folade Sokoya, has it is been currently rumoured on the social media.

She wrote to SDK about Folade Sokoya, where she denied or snatched or married Femi Anibaba. Read her explanation below…

Ronke Odusanya Press Statement On Husband Snatching Allegations.

”I knew Femi back in 2008 through a very close friend who was in America then and not through actress Liz da Silva as is being speculated.
When we met via phone, we got talking for while and I asked him what he does for a living and if he had a family,he told me he had children but was separated from his wife .

I asked him why he was separated and he said things didn’t work out between them .we became friends and talked a lot on the phone and he always had time talking to me even very late American time.
Gradually we got very close and I even met with his mum and siblings who lived in Lagos then but I still had my doubts about him then cos we had not seen each other eye to eye before and some men cannot be trusted .

One day,I got a message on my Facebook from a lady called FOLAPE SOKOYA and she asked me “do you know anyone called FEMI ANIBABA” and I said yes “he is my friend” and she went on to say “please stop talking to him cos he is my husband and I’m carrying his third child ” . I was very shocked and embarrassed, even though I had my doubts, I didn’t expect that kind of story.

I immediately printed out the message and went to his people to show them and I called him and explained everything to him but he told me things were not going on well with both of them and asked me if I didn’t wonder how he had so much time talking to me and that even if I called him anytime of the day he always picked my calls.

He said they both lived in the same house but each person minded his or her own business, when he was done I warned him never to call me again.

Later in May 2012 I was in America and I received a mail from him saying he heard I was around and he would like to see me that he had issues to discuss with me,I refused to see him and he went on to say he needed me more than anything because his wife had left him and taken the kids away too.I refused to see him and that was it.

When I got back to Nigeria he still called severally and then I decided to talk to him and he told me he would buy me a ticket to come to his house and see things for myself, later in September that same year I went to America and saw that she had truly left him and ever since we got talking again.

I AM NOT ENGAGED TO FEMI ANIBABA NEITHER AM I PLANNING TO GET MARRIED TO HIM.AS YOU READ THIS NOW WE ARE JUST FRIENDS I DONT KNOW ABOUT TOMORROW.

Please help me beg this woman not to rub my good name that I built over the years in mud . I did not snatch Femi Anibaba from her neither did I separate both of them, she is doing all this because she heard the marriage rumour and thought it is true and jumped in to use this opportunity to spoil my name without any evidence.

She should tell everyone the truth, this is my own version and the gospel truth and Stella,Heaven is my witness . I only reacted to this because she wants to mess up my name and I don’t like this rumour of me getting married to different men every year .This is my last say on this,I will not exchange words with her in the press.Thank you Stella”

PoliticsAPC Says Asari-dokubo Took Part In $9.3m Arms Scandal by oludashmi(op): 3:28am On Oct 09, 2014
The All Progressives Congress says ex-militant, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari, was involved in the $9.3m arms deal which led to the arrest of two Nigerians and an Israeli in South Africa. This is because he was found on the same plane where the money was found and confiscated by the South African authorities.

According to Punch, APC said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday, that…

“Under our constitution, the NSA is an adviser and has no executive powers to deploy troops from any of the services or purchase arms for them. That the arms purported to be purchased from South Africa were ordered from the office of the NSA is nothing but a mere fabrication, and raises serious questions about the motive for the purchase.

“Nigerians will therefore like to know on whose behalf Asari Dokubo was purchasing arms. This is very crucial because Asari Dokubo has been threatening that Nigeria will not know peace if his benefactor, President Jonathan, is not re-elected. Therefore, Nigerians will like to know whether he has started stockpiling arms to make his threat a reality, since elections are due in a few months’ time.

“If these arms are meant to fight insurgency, as the government has claimed, what is Asari Dokubo’s business purchasing arms for the Nigerian military, if indeed they were for the military? Does it not occur to the Nigerian government that this man who once took arms against the state may not have jettisoned his sinister plan against the same state?”

The party said the President should also come clean on the $5.7m that was also seized by South Africa on Monday. He said Jonathan would so well by revealing the identities of the Nigerians that were arrested in South Africa.

Dokubo-Asari in a telephone interview with journalists from Saudi Arabia where he is presently performing the 2014 Hajj, said the last time he visited South Africa was in 2002 and could not have gone to any country without a visa.

He said, “Can you enter any country without a visa? No person can enter any country without a visa. Presently, I am in Saudi Arabia performing my Hajj as the Amirul Hajj of Bayelsa State and this can be confirmed. I flew Flynass from Kaduna on September 27. So, it is really a shame that Lai Mohammed who has defiled the name of Allah has become a pathological and award-winning liar.

“Nobody enters any country without a visa and I have not been to South Africa since 2002. I flew Arik airline from Lagos on the September 27 and went to Kaduna where I flew Flynass airline and came to Saudi Arabia.”

One Pastor Yohana Buru of Christ Evangelical and Intercessory Fellowship Ministries, Kaduna, on Saturday fed 400 prison inmates, mainly Muslims, at the Kaduna Central Prisons. He also provided food for 600 inmates of a Destitute Home located on Kano Road in the metropolis, to mark the Eid el Kabir celebration.

CelebritiesStop Calling Me Old School – Rapper 2shotz by oludashmi(op):
In a recent interview, rapper 2shotz has reacted to the fact that many many artists who are out of the scene for many years are regarded to as ‘old school’. He warned that no one should call him an old school artist.

Rapper 2shotz also revealed his musical label and the number of artists signed in it.

What do you mean people are busy with the artiste of now?
I said it because that is how they say it. That is what I hear people say. Every artiste is an artiste. I don’t think that because you reigned some ten years ago you should be referred to as ‘old school’. I am not old school, I am still very much in the game.

Has someone told you that before?
Yes and No. Because I am not really that kind of artiste, I am an artiste that evolves with time and goes with the flow. You would not say that Shina Peters is an old artiste regardless of the years he has spent in the industry.
He has his own niche and audience. I have not heard any banging song from Shina Peters for a while but you would not deny the fact that he still goes for shows. So, you would not call him an old artiste. But, our categorization in Nigeria is that he is old because he has been there like ten years ago.

Which record label are you signed to now?
I have my own entertainment outfit called, `Umunna mu ooo’ Entertainment outfit. I am the only artiste on the label right now.

Are you working on getting more artistes to the record label?
Right now, it is just all about me because it is what I want. I used to always displease myself to please other people and it held me back. Now, it is all about me.

Which of your collaborations would you say is most memorable?
I would say that the most phenomenal song I did was the collabo with Timaya, Incase you never know, which was produced by Terry G. That song actually took me to a lot of places. It is my reference point till date.

FashionThe Miracle Of Body Magic And Wonder Bra – By Etcetera by oludashmi(op):
Our dear Paul Ejikeme, aka Etcetera writes this time about ladies who wear body magic and wonder bras just to deceive themselves that they have a toned body. He said your fats are waiting for you as soon as you pull ff those clothes. Enjoy the piece below…

Those women who wear simple and proper undergarments, this article is not about you. It is for those women who are confused and concerned and are leaning toward spending their hard-earned money on a magic garment that is being peddled as if it can solve all that ail them, only to be sorely disappointed.

Every eight seconds, a woman looks in the mirror and wants to be smaller. I have a huge problem with this type of women. Whenever I meet people who pretend to be what they are not, it gets under my skin. When you present yourself as something, you’re asking me to trust you are exactly what you say you are. Why would you then abuse the trust you asked for with the goal of winning my heart? That is not fair. A friend of mine introduced me to a very hot chic at a bar in Ikeja and after hours of hanging out and getting to know each other, she followed me home. All I could think about was what she’d look like under all those tight clothes, but when she finally grunted her way out of those really tight jeans and her body began to spread in all directions, I suddenly had a headache and didn’t feel so well and I gave her cab fare home.

I mean, is this body magic thing for-real? It is ridiculous. To think that someone would honestly wear it instead of putting the time and effort into actually losing the extra pounds should be a personal embarrassment. It’s really gone past pathetic. The extreme to which our women are going to capture an image of beauty that is neither holistic, healthy nor attractive is crazy. It seems so strange that some ladies complain about not being able to find sincere, honest and real men when everything about them is synthetic, processed and unreal. Ladies, let me sell you a clue.

If you find a man, any man, who seems to be attracted to women who have certain physical attributes like fake hair, fake nails, fake round bum-bum, fake flat stomach, fake eyelashes and fake breasts, odds are he’s a fake man. So if that’s what you’re looking for (fake men), then that’s cool. Leave the ‘real’ men to the ‘real’ women. If my girl had to UnCloth and all of a sudden picked up 8 to 10 pounds merely by taking off her corset, the attraction would have ended immediately. Because it is a fraud and I don’t get myself involved with fraudulent people. What worries me most is, how do you as a lady guard your emotions from the reaction you will inevitably receive when that look of shock and disdain appears on the face of your man after he sees those parts you’ve been hiding under that body magic? If you find yourselves that undesirable, why would you expect a man to find you desirable?

Let’s look at this thing called body magic and the falsity around it. It makes you feel you have dropped three dress sizes right? Which basically means you’ll shave off about three inches of fat in ten minutes, firm up your abs, and boom, you’ve lost all the extra weight. Yes girlfriend, a body magic can reshape you. Wearing a corset can change your bust-line, by raising the breasts upwards and shaping them, flattening the stomach, and improving posture. However, these effects are only temporary and will be lost on removing the corset.

Indeed, excessive corset wearing has been claimed to weaken certain muscles, making it more difficult to maintain your shape. Another thing a body magic can’t do is make a mound of fat disappear. Using a body magic for this purpose does nothing except shift mass fat into a place it originally was not supposed to be. Think about it, if fat was supposed to be buried deeper into your body, then guess what? God would have put it there. It’s stored on the outermost parts of your frame for a reason. Squeezing into a body magic and hoping it’s going to help permanently hide whatever flaws your body may have is a joke. And for Christ’ sake, the thing is so uncomfortable and tight, that it makes you unable to breathe or ease yourself when pressed.

I am really sad that our ladies don’t talk about healthy eating or exercise anymore. Body magic is a temporary fix at best and deceitful for that matter. Ladies, let’s be truthful here, if you met a guy who was wearing a muscle garment and once he took his shirt off, he was all flab underneath, won’t you be very disappointed? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with a woman using the garment in the process of losing weight and wanting to look toned down after childbirth. What I have issues with is the fact that we in this country are all about the quick fix. I think we should know that looking good is not just about hiding the body fat.

And wait a minute, I know some of you may actually think that you don’t have to stop eating your favourite fatty foods, because your body magic will force you right back in shape. You forget the fact that those foods are unhealthy and lack proper nutrition for the body. You also forget that those are the same foods that got you in a physically unfit figure in the first place. Forget the fact that those foods aren’t going to help you maintain that figure. Should you magically obtain it, you don’t want to sacrifice and take pains to exercise. Doesn’t it surprise you that the garment is called body magic, like abracadabra? It can give you all you want and you don’t have to sacrifice at all. My dear, nothing works that easy.

Why not work harder to achieve a permanent figure you are craving for? It must be hard, or down right depressing to walk around looking fine most of the day, and then having to take off the fine body suit and look at the undesired one at night. It’s like you are trying to fool yourself and others. Eventually, you’re going to have to face the ‘fat’. Remember when you take off that body magic, gravity takes over! And no man wants to buy an illusion. We all want the real thing. It’s just sad that some Nigerian women are so hell bent on instant gratification. It would be beautiful to see you ladies embrace yourselves as you are. If you run like a rat, smell like a rat and look like a rat, then guess what girlfriend, you are a rat.

Nairaland GeneralPedestrians Find Unconscious Policeman By Roadside In Surulere by oludashmi(op): 8:04am On Oct 03, 2014
Pedestrians around Stadium bus stop, Surulere, found a policeman lying unconsciously behind a flower garden on Thursday morning. He was said to have looked frail and foamed in the mouth.

Passersby who got to the location, quickly looked and left the scene. Many wondered whether he was attacked by some hoodlums and dumped at the place, others felt he was drunk and had yet to recover from the effects.

A keeper of the garden and also an eyewitness, said “That was the thought that initially came to mind. But we discovered he was not dead. His body was moving slightly, but he also foamed at the mouth. He was not attacked as his body didn’t show such signs. It looked to me that he had fallen sick and could not go home.

“However, no one could move near him as we didn’t know the station he was attached to, his name or relatives. But someone called the emergency line, and another person went to the Surulere Police Station to make a report. Later, they came to take him away.”

When a Punch correspondent got to the Surulere Police Station, an officer noted that the policeman had been taken away to a hospital for treatment.

When contacted for comments, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said, “Yes, the policeman was discovered at the junction in that condition. He was not involved in any accident. He is an officer attached to the Surulere Police Division. Meanwhile, the information received at the moment says he is now in a stable condition.”

Nairaland GeneralThugs Kill Security Man Over Gate Pass In Ketu by oludashmi(op): 7:32am On Oct 03, 2014
Some thugs loyal to a monarch’s nephew identified as Enibalomo in Lagos, has allegedly murdered a security man known as Mr. Odion Aimeyekagbon. Odion was killed because he insisted that Enibalomo must provide a gate pass before he could be granted exit from the estate.

According to Punch, Enibalomo was returning from an hotel at about 6pm when he approached the security gate. Odion, an employee of Real Striker Security Company and his colleague insisted that he provide a gate pass.

Enibalomo got angry for their request and called on some thugs to come for the security man. On arriving the location, the thugs smashed his head on an iron pillar leaving him to die in a pool of blood, while his colleague, Zaka Ajeh, reportedly escaped with some injuries.

When contacted, Odion’s brother said, “It is unfortunate that my brother died violently in the hand of miscreants. His killer must be made to face the law irrespective of his influence because this is a huge loss. The painful part is that we have not been able to see his corpse. The police only showed us the pictures of the mutilated and bloody corpse taken at the scene of crime. When we demanded that they should take us to the mortuary at Ikorodu where the corpse was deposited, the IPO in charge of the case refused. He insisted that we give him N5,000 before we could see the corpse of our murdered brother.

“I learnt that the leader of the murderers is a well known man in the community. Those area boys stabbed him and hit his head on an iron pillar. The police are telling us that they want the man to report himself to the station.

“Yes, our brother is dead, he cannot be brought back to life, but we do not want this man to just go free without paying for the innocent blood he shed. I want Nigerians to help us out because from all indications, the police want to sweep this murder under the carpet.”

The Acting Chairman of the estate’s Community Development Association, Rev. Bode Oresajo, said “I was called from the church that day. The crime was reported at the Ketu Police Station. We also wrote a letter to the governor and copied the Chairman, Ikosi-Isheri LCDA. The chairman visited the estate and promised to do something about the incident, but we have not seen any meaningful development.”

The Human Resources Manager of the Real Striker, Mr. Kolawole Dawodu, said the company was not happy with the way the case was being handled by the police.

He said, “We are expecting that the man who led the gang would have been arrested. The case was transferred from Ketu to Area H Command, Ogudu. Now, it is being handled in SCID, Yaba. The police promised to effect arrest within two weeks, but no arrest has been made. This is a case of a man who was murdered in cold blood while he was on his line of duty. The other official has been taken to his town for proper treatment.”

When contacted on the phone to comment on the matter, the Lagos State police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, promised to get back to our correspondent. He had, however, yet to do so as of press time.

PoliticsNobody Can Stop Fayose From Being Sworn In – Mark by oludashmi(op): 7:13am On Oct 03, 2014
Senate President, Davis Mark has stated that no one can stop Ekiti Governor-elect, Fayose, from being sworn-in when the time is due. He said despite all the allegations presently against him, Fayose’s in-inauguration must take place.

Mark stated this at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, at an event where Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State formally defected to the Peoples Democratic Party from the Labour Party.

The state Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, has tabled before the National Judicial Council a petition accusing the state’s Governor-elect and the police of complicity in the attack on judges and court workers in the state last week.

There is also a pending suit by a group, the E-Eleven, seeking to stop Fayose’s inauguration on the grounds that he was impeached in 2006 and that he swore to an affidavit denying that he was impeached.

But Mark said in spite of all the antics going on in the state, Fayose would be sworn in.

Singer Waje, had a bad time on stage when her wig fell off while performing at the Beat fm triple 9 concert yesterday.

While performing one of her singles ‘Ijeoma’, she moved her body so well to thrill the audience and suddenly, her wig dropped off. The crowd screamed so much that she knew something was wrong.

She immediately realised he wig was not on her head, then she picked it up and continued her performance. She later laughed about it even though she felt embarrassed.

It was at the same show that Peter Okoye fell from the stage yesterday.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Why I Put Out The TB Joshua Bribery Audio by oludashmi(op): 11:34pm On Sep 27, 2014
Can this guy cross his heart that he has never received such envelopes since starting his profession?

In all the cases he has outlined, what was he waiting when the event was over? Tried to get his part but failed in some cases?

Abeg! Didn't Reuben Abati castigate every sector of the Federal Government when he was there? Where is he today?

Didn't Jonathan claim not to have a shoe and was born in a slum like this guy?

Look at all these leaders of different tribal militants in Nigeria. Imagine the positions they all attain today.

Making a true change does not require some defensive write-ups, except you are seeking what your predecessors now have.
PoliticsFayose Didn’t Slap Justice Adeyeye, But He Supervised His Beating – Ekiti Attorn by oludashmi(op): 11:28pm On Sep 27, 2014
Wale Fapohunda, the Attorney General of Ekiti state, was a guest on Channels TV Sunrise programme today where he shed light into the alleged beating of a judge by the Governor-elect at the Ekiti state High Court on Thursday September 25th.

According to Fapohunda, Justice Adeyeye told him when they spoke on phone that he was never slapped by Ayo Fayose but that the governor-elect supervised his beating.

“When I spoke to the judge, the judge did not say that the governor-elect slapped him. He said he supervised his beating. The judge said he (Fayose) was there, and was standing while his thugs, for want of a better word, beat the judge. Not only did they beat him up, they tore his clothes.” Fapohunda said.

He said Justice Adeyeye told him that immediately they arrived in court for the election tribunal sitting, Fayose’s supporters/thugs began ransacking the court rooms, tearing court documents. After ransacking about 4 courts, Justice Adeyeye came out to have a conversation with the governor-elect.

Adeyeye did this other junior judges were not seen, they probably had taken to their heels and he (Adeyeye), being a senior Judge, thought he could approach Fayose as a gentle man. He went to meet Fayose to ask him to control his supporters who were ransacking court rooms and tearing documents, and before he knew it, Adeyeye was physically assaulted.

Meanwhile, Adeyeye was not a member of the Electoral tribunal, he just wanted to calm the situation at that time.

Nairaland GeneralWhy I Put Out The TB Joshua Bribery Audio by oludashmi(op):
The last 72 hours were probably the most intense in my life. The love, kind words and support I’ve received in that period from, mostly, total strangers have been overwhelming. I want to thank everybody who saw the good in what I did. Though, to be honest, I think it was a little stupid. What was I thinking putting my life and probably my career on the line in an attempt to change something so entrenched it seems unchangeable? But really I’m not fazed by the trash talk from those allergic to the truth.

It’s a long time coming and someone has to put the Big Ben on the fat cat, I guess.

During the same period I’ve also been insulted like never before. I’ve been called the most uncomplimentary names and all the curses in Deuteronomy hurled towards me. They should be ashamed that the brushed ego of their spiritual Godfather meant more to them than the over 90 lives that perished under the rubble.

I can deal with the trash talk and name-calling. But I’m also not naïve. I’ve made plans to evacuate my family to safety at the shortest notice in case things escalate. I hope they don’t. But one can never be so sure with these fundamentalists.

They said I’m an attention freak; that I published the audio clip because I yearned to be a social media celebrity (whatever that means). Well, I won’t lie; I enjoyed the 15 minutes of fame. I loved the thrill of being in the eye of the storm. In case my accusers are reading this, I got over 2,000 followers on twitter within the period. I don’t know what to make of that yet. I’m not so sure about this Twitter thing but if there’s a way I can convert that to money, that would be something. Gbenga Olorunpomi, how much does one twitter follower exchange for a dollar these days?

So why did I publish the audio?

I had recorded the audio six days before posting it on Twitter. To be sincere, I didn’t think much of it until Saturday morning (I’d explain later). I was intently watching the way the collapsed building was being played out in the media after the rather disappointing way Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, dodged reporters through a back door after his private meeting with TB Joshua on September 14. I observed that Nigerian media were being too gentle on TB Joshua despite the glaring irregularities surrounding the collapse. I read more reports about the “hovering craft” and how Boko Haram could’ve sabotaged the building and other poppycock the televangelist wanted the world to believe.

Very little was reported about the structural defects of the building. Not much was written about the fact that the building originally had 2 floors and was being illegally refurbished with 4 additional floors when it collapsed. We didn’t come hard on the Synagogue Church goons who attacked first responders. We didn’t highlight the fact that many of those that perished could have been saved if NEMA officials weren’t barred from the site for almost three days! We didn’t make an issue of the fact that our colleagues who had gone to report the collapsed building were molested on Saturday.

So when I woke up last Saturday morning and saw the picture of Jonathan shaking hands with a grinning TB Joshua with headlines like “Jonathan consoles TB Joshua,” I said damn it! I couldn’t stomach this blatant impunity.

TB Joshua is perhaps the most powerful preacher in Africa and politicians all over the continent fawn at him. But as watchdogs, journalists must hold entrenched powers to account. If Nigerian politicians didn’t realise that more than 90 lives had just perished underneath a building without requisite permit and that those responsible should be held accountable, then the responsibility falls on journalists to force them to do the right thing.

Journalists shouldn’t be seen or heard telling the prime suspect they would write “just like you said” after he offered to buy their consciences with N50,000.

Some of the reporters who collected the N50,000 have called me after the audio went viral to complain. They told me they have been getting calls from colleagues and family members who recognised their voices in the recording. One even accused me of a breach of trust. I told him I didn’t sign a pact of silence with anybody. For me the decision was between covering the ethical shortcomings of my colleagues or doing that which is right to make sure those who died and their families get justice. The decision was easy.

Why didn’t I publish the audio the same day I recorded it? Nigerian journalists habitually ask for gratification at press conferences and corporate events that it has unfortunately become a norm. Reporters actually think you’re a fool if you turned down what they call “brown envelope”. There are several excuses to justify it: “We’re poorly paid,” “We have not been paid for months,” etc. Honestly, it’s hard to dismiss some of these excuses sometimes. Nigerian Journalists are perhaps among the worst paid in the world. This is where the Nigerian Union of Journalist should do more. Its officials should stop paying courtesy calls to politicians (of course, we know what exchanges hands during these visits) and do more to force Jet-flying owners of media organisations to pay reporters more and on time. We deserve it.

Journalists should also explore other related and legitimate means of making money like researching, writing and editing reports for NGOs, writing and editing of brochures and reports, working as fixers to foreign journalists, blogging (I recently met a Nigerian television reporter that make quite some money monthly from his blog), etc.

Like everything in Nigeria, this “brown envelope” thing has been stretched beyond the limit of ridiculousness. I’d give some examples: On August 15, 2010 a truck belonging to Dangote Sugar Refinery caused an inferno at the Ojodu Bridge outside Otedola Estate in Lagos. More that 50 lives perished in the fire. An inquest was initiated by a non-governmental organisation, Access to Justice and Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana. Please take a deep breath before reading the next sentence. During the inquest, officials of Dangote Industries distributed cartons of Spaghetti (and some money, probably to buy ingredients) to court reporters at the Ikeja High Court to probably skew their account of the hearing. In case you missed it let me repeat. Some Nigerian Journalists collected packs of Spaghetti as bribes! Are we that hungry? Some reporters got as little as 12 packs of spaghetti. My friend, Ben Ezeamalu, was almost beaten up for speaking against it.
In fact, they erected a wall of hostility around themselves whenever he came around. According to him, a very senior journalist pulled him aside and told him it was easy for him to turn down the brown envelope because he wasn’t married and had no school fees to pay.

Ben said his curiosity was aroused while he was researching for material on the internet for an article he was writing days before the coroner’s verdict on the inquest. To his surprise, there was very little material for an inquest that involved Africa’s richest man and had lasted 19 months! After the coroner delivered his verdict, in which he indicted Dangote’s company as well as the Nigeria Police, the (short) article was tucked away in a remote corner in almost all the newspapers the next day. The fact that the coroner indicted Dangote was also carefully left out in the articles.

Other journalists have tagged Ben “a spy” for consistently refusing to collect “brown envelopes”.

Nigerian journalists no longer know where to draw the line. A father that lost his son during last Dana plane crash was forced to pay journalists during his son’s wake-keep before it was reported. There are more puke-inducing instances but I’d stop here.

For those of you saying N50,000 ($300) was too little to entice Nigerian reporters, I’ve seen reporters scuffle over N2,000 ($12) during a press conference.

During last year’s gubernatorial election in Ondo State, reporters literally came to blows at Governor Mimiko’s home after the latter released “appreciation money” for journalists who covered his polling unit. The sharing formula was N10,000 per head, until the cash ran low and the formula switched to N7,000. Cue bedlam. The governor’s PA, looking on with contempt, threatened to evict them from his employer’s residence if they failed to conduct themselves with decorum. One fellow even started arranging for another group of journalists to go meet the governor for another “appreciation money.”

Editors should also monitor their reporters too, but we all know that some editors get theirs through subtler manner (Bank transfers). I’m a Nigerian journalist I want to change things the only way I know how to – going public with it. I’m not saying anything new here, everybody who has one thing or the other to do with journalists knows that these things happen. Maybe I’m the first journalist to go public with it in such a manner.

Corporate organisations and individuals should also stop offering these bribes (I still insist that they are bribes and nothing else). Journalist will report your events whether they like it or not. They want to stay in business. My heart skips anytime I get a call from my editor or receive that email with a subject that reads: “Pending stories”. I know I’m required to deliver. I don’t need that “brown envelope” to turn around that copy. I know in the Punch for instance, reporters are required to fill a certain number of pages every week. They can’t sit around waiting for “money to fuel your cars” to write stories to fill those pages. The threat of losing one of the most lucrative jobs in the industry is enough “inducement”. But the truth is most pressers aren’t news worthy so PR officials feel they need to induce reporters to write about them.

And for the fundamentalist followers of TB Joshua, this isn’t about your spiritual Godfather. I would still have gone public with this if the Pope was involved. I can’t say I’m sorry that his ego was bruised. He clearly meant for the money to influence the reporting of the event. “So what are you going to write?” He had asked. That makes it a bribe. Simple. I can’t help you if you couldn’t decipher that. I’m a reporter not a brain surgeon.

This is the last I’m going to say on this issue unless something drastic happens. Let the personal attacks continue.

EducationStudent Confesses To Explosive Found In University Of Uyo by oludashmi(op): 6:23am On Sep 23, 2014
A student of the University of Uyo, who was found with grenades as confessed that he knew nothing about the explosives. He said he found the explosive on the ground and was trying to hand it over to the school authourity.

“It all started on Friday when I was coming back from church. Just close to where the construction was going on, I saw two white things on the ground. When I picked them, I saw the instruction ‘hand grenade.”

He however, did not explain why he did not alert the school security.

National Coordinator of Peace on Campus Initiatives (PCI), Mr. Oliver Cromwell, said the explosives were found in the bag of the suspect by some students, who alerted the PCI. His men in the UNIUYO chapter quickly trailed him to his males’ hostel.

Cromwell said his men on discovering the bombs that were well-packaged in a bag in the hostel’s room, apprehended the suspect and invited the anti-bomb squad of the state police command, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, to the scene for verification. The squad detonated the two devices and searched the hostel rooms for more.

The command’s spokesman, Mr. Etim Dickson, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident, however, explained that the explosives were local devices, which could have been invented by any of the science students in the university. He promised that the Police would investigate more.
