The General Overseer of The Latter Rain Assembly and Convener of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has charged some churches in the country for encouraging corrupt and bad leadership in Nigeria.

Bakare said these churches are aware of the sins of these leaders but would rather class them as sacred cows and untouchable so as to keep receiving their monies.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Corruption and the Soul of the Nation’ during the first anniversary of the Occupy Nigeria Protest in Lagos, Pastor Bakare said he regrets to say that this action by churches have robbed the citizens of realising their potentials in the land.

“The church has failed the nation. Worst oppression is going on in the churches today. Most churches encourage corrupt leaders by failing to tell them the truth and collecting their money.

“It cripples a nation’s character and drains her of substance. We are confronted daily with news and reports of executive corruption in high places, assaulted with a legal system that has long lost respect for the sacredness of justice.

“We have resorted to worshipping and preserving certain sacred cows and even their sires. We have a social system that makes a mockery of a country and her feeble efforts at self-reclamation to the end that even her entire existence becomes a running joke.

“This is not mere alarmism. Our country has long been distorted by corruption and it has progressively eroded her strength and undermined her potential.” he said.

President Jonathan was at the Mapo Hall, Ibadan, for his campaign yesterday, where he called some ex-NADECO chiefs hypocrites. During his campaign, he also promised Ibadan an International airport, if re-elected for a second term.

After paying homage to the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Samuel Odulana, he said some former National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) leaders in the South-West as hypocrites because they cannot justify what they are doing today.

He said, “I did say that the South-West reminds one of the days of the National Democratic Coalition. But I am convinced that some of the NADECO actors are hypocrites, because they cannot justify what they are doing today. The South-West believes in human rights and social justice. No south-westerner will pray that someone who does not go through proper trial will be jailed for 300 years and above. If they are not hypocrites, they couldn’t be doing what they are doing today, but I don’t want to go into that now. If they are not hypocrites, they will not be talking about not empowering women.

“Without education, you cannot change people. If I did not go to school, I will not be where I am today. Every Nigerian child must have the Goodluck opportunity; that is why we are building out-of-school children secondary schools and Almajiris schools in some parts of Nigeria. I will not build prison for you but I will build schools for you.”

He added that if re-elected, he would empower more women in politics.

“We must continue to encourage women in politics. We have been told by some political parties that they will not encourage it. They said they would scrap the office of the First Lady at the federal and state levels. They said they would scrap the Office of the Council Chairman’s wife, the Defence Officers’ Wives Association, the Army Officers’ Wives Association, the Naval Officers’ Wives Association, the Air Force Officers’ Wives Association and the Police Officers’ Wives Association, but having served as deputy governor, governor, Vice President and now President, I can tell you that these offices are helping to mobilise our women. The money they spend is coming from non-governmental organisations. We send our daughters to big schools but do we then sentence them to become baby factory workers and yam pounders? I don’t believe that Nigerian women are designed to pound yam or be manufacturing children only and do nothing more. Women are as endowed as men and they will continue to be in top position in our government. I have told Nigerian women that their 2015 votes are to liberate them or imprison them in kitchens.”

He said after visiting the Olubadan, he was convinced that the city deserved an international airport.

“The Olubadan has requested that we change the Ibadan airport to an international airport. Let us complete this one first and the next step will be taken but I assure you that Ibadan deserves an international airport. I have also promised that Ibadan dry port, meant to decongest Lagos port, will be looked into.”

A jealous husband, Abimbola Olorode, has been accused of beating up his wife, Comfort, to sustain serious injuries on her face after she stopped to greet her pastor in the church premises.

She described her husband as a very possessive man who had physically abused her countless times as a result of jealousy and would not allow her speak with any man.

“My man used to be the best husband any woman would want to have when I met him in 1999. His behavior at that time made me to fall in love with him and also invest in him financially, supporting him through his undergraduate studies. But he changed since 2008 when he got a job.

“This is not the first time he is beating me. Even my children are not safe with him. He accuses me of all sorts of things, yet he has not caught me with any man. I know he cheats on me with various women, but I don’t complain.

“This latest incident was as a result of the issues he had with his former church. He was made the youth leader of the church, but had to leave the church because he was accused of dating several women in the church including the pastor’s wife.”

"I was coming from the market on Saturday and stopped by to greet the pastor. My husband appeared from nowhere, started beating me, abusing me and smashed my forehead with a stone he picked from the ground,” she said.

Countering her allegation, Abimbola said his wife's long nails are responsible for the injury on her face, not him. He also claimed to still love his wife and mother of his children and would like the matter forgotten as families from both parties have delved into the issue.

“I would not want to start saying things that I would regret later, just because of this little misunderstanding. There is no evidence that I am responsible for the injuries on her face. She injured herself with her fixed nails when she fell while running away from the church. Marriage disputes are supposed to be resolved amicably without much publicity.”

“She has not heard from anybody that I have any child outside wedlock. She stood by me and I assisted her also, which is normal among couples. She is the mother of my children and I still love her. She is only being suspicious. I don’t want my home to break,” he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan, was quoted saying most elder statesmen in the country are nothing but motor park touts. He made this statement during a visit by the Tanko-Yakasai-led Northern Elders Council to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said some people were hiding under big names to create problems for the country. Jonathan also said that such people were in the habit of making unguarded statements with the aim of creating enmity.

“Some people call themselves statesmen but they are not statesmen, they are just ordinary politicians. For you to be a statesman, it is not because you have occupied a big office before but the question is what are you bringing to bear on the nation?

“Are you building this country? Or are you a part of the people who tell lies to destroy this country; to create enmity and make people who ordinarily would have been living together to fight themselves?

“Are you planning to set the country ablaze because you did not get that particular thing you want? At the appropriate time, Nigerians will know all of them even though I know most of such people. The younger ones do not know. “Some people, including those with big names, are hiding under some clogs and creating a lot of problems in this country.

“They are making provocative statements that will set this country ablaze. How can someone tell me that such people are senior citizens. They are not senior citizens and they can never be. They are ordinary motor park touts.

“If you are a senior citizen, you will act like one. It is not because of the offices we occupy, it is by divine grace and providence that some of us occupy these offices. But what role are you playing to build this country?”

Although, he didn't mention any name but there are indications he may be referring to the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.

This is because Obasanjo adressed the Iyalodes and prominent women leaders from the South-West, who visited him at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta on Monday, that the nation’s reserves which as of 2007 stood at $67bn had been depleted by the Federal Government.

A lucky 7 years old girl has survived a plane crash in Kentucky which led to the death of 4 others, including her parent. The US girl walked out of the wreckage to a neighbourhood where she informed a starnager of the unfortunate incident.

Rescue crews fanned out to look for the plane and discovered its wreckage in a wooded area about 30 miles (50km) east of Paducah city. On discovery, 4 people onboard including the pilot were dead.

71 years old Larry Wilkins, narrated how he answered his door on Friday night where a little girl was standing barefooted and “bleeding pretty badly”.

“She told me that her mom and her dad were dead, and she was in a plane crash, and the plane was upside down. “She asked if she could stay here. I got a wash cloth and cleaned her up. And of course called 911,” he added. “I felt so sorry for her, tears come to my eyes. Brave little girl.”

Kentucky State Police said those killed in the crash were Marty Gutzler, 49, and Kimberly Gutzler, 45, their 9-year-old daughter, Piper Gutzler, and Piper’s 14-year-old cousin, Sierra Walder.

“This girl came out of the wreckage herself and found the closest residence and reported the plane crash,” Kentucky police Sgt Dean Patterson told reporters. It’s a miracle in a sense that she survived it, but it’s tragic that four others didn’t,” he added.

According to a recent report published by United Kingdom’s The Independent newspaper, a fifth of the 25,000 women surveyed through questionnaires responded to having suffered from one form of discrimination or the other at their places of work.

While it is true that the survey took place in Europe, investigations have proven that women in this part of the world, including Nigeria, do not fare better than their UK counterparts.

In many instances, the Nigerian woman faces unnecessary pressure and discrimination at her workplace; not for any unprofessional reason or laxity on her job, but just because her creator, in His sovereignty, chose to make her feminine.

If a female employee is pretty and friendly, the odds are high that she would suffer sexual harassment from her senior male colleagues and not spared advances from her peers, if not even subordinates. Refusal to play ball, in most instances, results into her being subjected to threats, denial of entitlements, like promotion, training and, even sometimes, could face outright dismissal.

In this interesting interview, Terry G speaks about his fear for marriage. He also talked about his booming water business, plans for his son and people’s assumption of him whenever he appeared in church.

Why are you yet to get married to Mimi, the mother of your child?
She’s my fiancée; we are getting married one day but I don’t want everybody pushing us to settle down as if they own our lives. One thing many of them have not realised is that marriage is a decision we have to make once in life. I don’t want to make a decision now and change my mind later or else everybody looking up to me as a role-model will see me as an irresponsible guy. Besides, I don’t want to make a rash decision that I’d regret for the rest of my life. That is why I have been taking my time, putting things that make marriage worthwhile together and at the end, when that fruitfulness is everywhere we can live our lives together forever. I thank God I have a good and understanding partner and we are working together.

What do you understand about marriage?
I don’t know anything about marriage, because I have never been into it, but I believe marriage is when two opposite sexes are living together as couple. Technically, I’m married because my fiancée lives with me and my son. I live like a married man, though without any ring or court pronouncement. Everybody asks me about marriage but hardly talks about divorce. Let’s not go into that aspect so we don’t hurt the victims of that circumstance and if I can say it here, I don’t want to rush into marriage so I won’t become a victim of the circumstance called divorce.

As a son of a deaconess, in the church how do people relate with your personality as Terry G?
Actually, I don’t go to church always, due to time and my kind of job. But any time I show up in church, people look at me in an odd way. I just have to convince myself that I am in church to serve God.

How do you find time to serve God?
Going to church doesn’t mean serving God, but I have time for God always. My conscience is for God. I fear God and I know that the grace of God is more than sufficient for me. If you fear God and know that he exists and he’s always around to assist you, you are connected to him.

There are speculations that you are relocating to your house in Lekki?
Me ke? I didn’t buy any house in Lekki and I’m not relocating to Lekki. Even if I’m going to relocate to Lekki, it has to be my own house. Lekki is another environment I would love to reach out to because of my business because my water factory is still in my neighbourhood for now, I can’t just leave here or my business.

19 years old Courtney Dike, who plays for Oklahoma State Football, has rejected the $7000 world cup bonus paid to her by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). She said playing for her country is enough honour to her.

NFF Head of Competition Sanusi Mohammed, said Dike, who scored the fastest goal in the tournament’s history, rejected the outstanding allowances accrued to her for representing the country at the 10-day tournament.

“When we called her mother to confirm the delivery of the allowances, she declined it and insisted that the opportunity of playing for Nigeria was all the reward the family needed.” Sanusi said.

The head of the Nigeria Women League board Dilichukwu Onyedinma has said the player deserves a national award for her patriotic act.

Boko Haram sect has taken a further step on Mubi as it now renames the town to Madinatul Islam, meaning the city of Islam. The sect also announced the introduction of Sharia and the amputation of 10 people in the town.

A trapped resident, Aliyu Bala, who disclosed the renaming of Mubi on Tuesday, also said that the sect had set up check-points in strategic parts of the community.

“They are keeping vigil in every nook and cranny of the town and calling on residents who ran away to come back to their homes. They are also asking those in communities in the four Local Government Areas which they captured to return because their safety will be assured.”

A lawyer, Sunday Wugira, who went to Maiha to pick up his aged parents who fled to the village when Mubi was captured, also confirmed that many trapped residents were secretly fleeing.

He said, ‘‘I was in Maiha a few hours ago, the plight of the people I saw was simply beyond imagination. We were in a commercial bus when some fleeing soldiers said we must adjust for them to get space in the bus.”

Salisu Baba, a resident of Uba, one of the captured communities, said, “The insurgents don’t want any election. They have restated their vow to capture the whole state in no distant time. The insurgents have assured people of total freedom and have been telling shop owners to open their shops threatening that anyone who fails to open his shop will have the shop broken.

“Whenever the insurgents want any commodity, they pay for it. This encouraged meat and tea sellers and others to open for business. They provided security during the market day in Uba last Thursday while promising to continue to give marketers and residents who come to the area utmost security as long as they complied with Islamic rules. They also opened one of the filling stations belonging to A.A Garba in Uba as motorists’ trooped out to buy petrol.”

A Liberian refugee, Moses Andrel, has confessed that his wife is full aware that he is an armed robber. He said his wife prays for before leaving for his night operations.

He said he informed his wife before quitting his driving job for car snatching and his wife approved of it. He also claims to give his wife money after every successful operation.

“My wife has a boy for me and is pregnant and she knew all my movement but I didn’t discuss everything with her,” he said.

As a driver distributing sausage rolls to customers, he said he was earning between N20,000 and N25,000 a month as salary but when he quit driving and joined a car snatching gang, his income increased asronomically to N200,000 a month.

He said he did not find it difficult to be a car snatcher because he was already a driver and what he did was to look for a driving job and when his employers assign him a car, he would sell it and relocate to another city in Nigeria. He confessed that he sold some cars in Lagos and relocated to Oyo State where he was eventually arrested by the police.

Andrel revealed that they have network across cities in Nigeria and that was why it was possible to sell off any snatched car through their network. And mentioned Alhaji Tanko as their big customer living in Abuja and said once any of his gang snatches any car, Adebayo, a panel beater, would first change the engine and chassis numbers of the vehicle before they end it to Alhaji in Abuja who pays them immediately.

He said they target brands such as Toyota Camry, Nissan, Honda and SUVs and usually sell them for between N250,000 and N300,000 to Alhaji.

The House of Representative has launched an investigation into the case of a Nigerian baby who was forcefully taken from his mother and adopted by the Norwegian government.

The Norwegian government reportedly took the 2-week old baby from his mother with claims that the mother and child lack bond and lacks eye contact. This has left the mother, Ms. Queen Agho, psychologically and emotionally depressed.

The Edo State born mother, who is based in Norway, had the baby in April in 2013. When contacted on the telephone, Queen said that the Norwegian Child Welfare Authorities, had already taken away the baby “for adoption for a period of 18 years.”

When the case was brought to the floor by the Minority Whip in the House, Mr. Samson Osagie, following a petition by Agho, the Chairperson, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora, Ms. Abike Dabiri, said they are aware of the issue and already trying to resolve it.

The spokesperson for the family, Mr. Kelvin Izekor, said efforts by Agho to contest the forceful adoption was frustrated by the Norwegian authorities.

He said the Norwegian Child Welfare Authorities claimed that Agho was forcefully taken to a psychiatric home by the police and child welfare for the purpose of generating official evidence to substantiate their claims. But Izekor faulted the claim saying the doctor had confirmed her to be mentally fit and healthy to care for her baby.

The letter reads, “The embassy wishes to register its utmost displeasure with the manner in which, a nursing mother, Ms. Agho, was treated. For such treatment to be meted out to a defenceless woman who had just given birth to her first child is most inhumane and certainly is in breach of all human rights practices.

“The allegation that there was no connection between mother and child and lack of eye contact within the first two weeks of the baby’s life seems to be in total contradiction of the reality of the mother’s position.

“The embassy therefore wishes to once more seize this opportunity to draw the attention of the esteemed Royal Ministry to the increasing cases of arbitrary seizure of Nigerian children on very flimsy and unacceptable reasons.

“The decision to seize a suckling baby of two weeks and four days from its mother and deprive the baby of the essential nutrients of breast milk and motherly love from his biological mother is indeed inhuman and an infringement of the mother’s most basic fundamental human rights and child’s right to a family life.”

It seems the health of Omonigho Abraham, the 4-year boy attacked by 2 German dogs has worsened. The father of the boy said his head now smells offensively where he is being treated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

He said, “My boy still complains of pains in different parts of his body. Also, when they open the bandage on his head, you will see that there is no much difference. It’s still like the first time the incident happened. In fact, for up to two weeks no consultant or doctor attended to him, and his head started smelling.

“We have been told he may still have to be admitted for six months or up to one year, for the doctors to do a skin-grafting surgery on his open skull. They will cut skin from parts of his body, to cover up the skull.

“The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Health, has already played its part by writing a letter to LASUTH that it would foot all the bills for which we are grateful.

“But when the letter got to them, they did not implement it. I was still buying the drugs till yesterday (Tuesday) that I was exhausted and I cried out that I did not have any money to buy drugs again.

“That was when the management of the hospital led by the Chief Medical Director, apologised and promised to start implementing the state government’s order. I have decided to wait for at least a week and see if they will change, like they promised.

“The real issue I have now is that they (LASUTH) have not released the medical report which I asked for since October 16. They (LASUTH) have been directing me from one person to another and I am getting tired. If I see the report, I will know what exactly to do about this issue.”

Another report says the hospital management were angered by the fundraising program for Omonigho which they feel the father was using to make money from his son’s predicament.

The father later said he was called into a meeting on Tuesday in which the management of the hospital promised to start implementing the state government’s pledge to Omonigho.

Contrary to what friends said about Kemi Omotoyinbo’s death, her sister, Seun Omotoyinbo has revealed that her sister did not beg for money to perform surgery. She said her sister paid N170,000 in advance and the surgery was successful before her death.

In an interview with Encomium, How exactly did it happen?
On Saturday, September 13, 2014, my sister got married at White House, Toyin Street Ikeja, Lagos. Then on Monday, September 22, she went to the hospital for checkup where the doctor told her she needed bed rest and was immediately admitted in the hospital till the day of delivery. Before her wedding, the doctor had already informed her that she would undergo surgery and she already paid N170,000 meant to cover the hospital bills on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. My sister called me and said she wanted to give me a surprise without knowing I was getting two surprise packages from her. At about 8-9pm, our elder sister called to inform me about the safe delivery of my sister. I requested to speak to her but was told she was still in the theatre. I decided to go to the hospital the next morning because I stay at Akoka and the General Hospital Oreke where she was, is located at Boundry, Ajegunle, Lagos. At 1am, I received a call from my elder sister saying, “Kemi just passed away”, I became mad that moment and could not sleep till dawn. Although, I did not believe my sister was gone until I got to the hospital and saw her body.

What really was the cause of her death?
My sister never knew she had fibroid until she was almost due for delivery when the doctors detected it, that was why the doctor decided she would have a caesarian session because she would not have the strength for natural birth. Before her body was released to us, the hospital demanded a balance of N78,000 but one of the doctors told us not to worry about such an amount that we should pay N42,000 instead. And her husband paid immediately before her body was laid to rest at Atan Cemetery, Lagos, on Thursday, October 2, 2014. Kemi still spoke to her husband after the operation saying, “Honey, I made it” but did not have the opportunity to carry her son because she was still weak. However, my sister had fibroid which lead to internal bleeding and unfortunately, she did not survive it.

Mrs Esther Ifi has narrated how a six-man gang tortured and killed her 36 years old husband, late John Ifi. She said the gang beat him to coma right in the presence of some policemen in July, at Delta state.

According to the story told, someone gave late John the sum of N500 to remit to the head of vigilante group, Mr Felix Ipemu, but John failed to do so. Hearing this, the head of the group ordered some boys to deal with John for disloyalty.

It was learnt that he was beaten to a coma and taken to the police station where he died. Since then, only 2 of the 6 men have been arrested while 4 others fled.

Esther, a mother of four, said “It has been difficult for me to fend for the children since the gang killed my husband. They attacked him three times that very day. He was relaxing at home around 8pm when they attacked him again. Even though the police saw the gang beating him, they did not do anything.

“Instead, they bundled him inside their van and took him to the station. His brother and I begged them to release him, but they refused. It was the following day that we learnt he was dead. Just because of N500, they snatched my joy from me.”

The family solicitor has filed a petition to the Inspector General of Police, the Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, and the state’s commissioner of police, which reads, “We are representatives of Mr. Jimoh Ifi, Mrs. Esther Ifi, Miss Juliet Ifi, Miss Knowledge Ifi, Miss Praise Ifi and Miss Prayer Ifi and other members of the family.

Residents of Onimaba, College Bus stop, Ikotun Road, Igando, Lagos, woke up to an amazing morning last week Thursday to see about 20 copies of letters allegedly written by robbers, asking them for an end of the year gift, Punch reports.

The letter, which was scattered across the street, reads, “Be prepared, be prepared, be prepared. Our dues must be paid this festive season. Nobody can stop us as we can strike at any time. Only enough money can save your life. To be forewarned is to be fore-harmed. We have warned you in this area, and if you have ears, you ought to hear.”

One of the landlord said, “On Thursday morning, around 4.30am when people normally start to go to work, we noticed the papers scattered on our streets. Some unknown persons, no doubt, had dumped the letter overnight in the area. We have about 18 streets in the area. When we saw it, we called on our CDA chairman, Alhaji Sarumi, who in turn called on the police at Igando.”

Another landlord, who identified himself simply as Alhaji Lawal said, “The threat letter is very disturbing. The last time we had a robbery incident in this area was about six months ago. At that time, they came in through the compound of Igando Local Government Primary School, and escaped through Potoku, an unfenced canal at an end of our street. Potoku Canal reaches all the way to Lagos State University Road, Igando.

“We are calling on the police to intensify efforts in securing our area. We want the Area Commander, Area M Idimu, and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad to beam their searchlight on our areas.”

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, however said, “The incident has not been reported to the Igando Police Division. However, if the residents have received such letter, let them bring it to the police. If there is such information, we will do well to ensure we deploy enough personnel in the area. The responsibility of the police is to ensure safety of lives and property in the state.”

The Super Falcons’ coach, Edwin Okon has revealed that he is being owed 25 months salary. He said he hasn’t been paid salary since August 2012.

Okon, who led the Super falcons to win the 7th African Women Championship in Namibia on Saturday, lamented the bad treatment he has received from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“Since August 2012 when I led the Falconets to the World Cup where we came fourth, up till today, I’m yet to get a dime as salary from the NFF,” he told the media. Every time I go to the office to complain, they will say there is no money.

UK-based Nigerian Mother Pleas For Help For Kidnapped Child

A UK Court has ordered that the 2 year-old girl, Liya, who was allegedly kidnapped to Nigeria by her paternal grand mother, be returned to the mum.

It would be recalled, that a lady named Moronke Fadoju, revealed on the social media 2 weeks ago that her 2 years daughter, Liya was kidnapped and taken to Nigeria by her paternal grand mother, without her consent.

She shared how she went to school only to get back and her daughter was already missing. A lot of people, including bloggers condemned the woman and her son for such an act and the story went viral.

But the happy mother revealed yesterday that she’s having her daughter back.

“Today, My Liya’s return was ordered by the court… More than grateful to God, family& friends who stood by me, all the lies and spicy stories made up to portray me as an irresponsible person was futile. The Uk authorities recognise i’m a great mum, no tainted record whatsoever so shes coming home. I tried to keep things civil b/w himself & i for Liya’s sake but they exploited my kindness, decided to act like illiterates & his mum’s criminal act won’t go unpunished.” she said.

Her baby daddy, Izuchukwu Ehiemere, had initially denied the abduction. In his side of the story, he claimed that both party were aware that the child would be taken to Nigeria by his mum.
