Career / Re: Need Your Opinion- To Come Home Or Stay In The Uk by oludunamis(m): 6:30pm On Jun 16, 2007
@TATS

Thanks for your analysis. Yes its a difficult one and as you advised I may go 4 the naija option. Again top on my priority is to break into the area i am being offered back in naija, i have triend tried doing that here, but no luck as yet.

I guess have to bear the difficulty of living searate from my family for at least 1 or 2 yrs. I am going to be based in lagos but mainly working offshore 2wks and onshore 2 weeks.

I am still on WP and wud not get ILR until 2011, so its not much of an option to wait till i get it, cos by then i probably wont be interested in that dsicpline offered in naija.

Thanks for your advise
Career / Need Your Opinion- To Come Home Or Stay In The Uk by oludunamis(m): 1:35pm On Jun 15, 2007
Hi Guys, I need your opinion on the above subject.

I currently have a job here that pays around £34k PA as a project engr for an oil service company. I also have an offer back home with one of the big oil companies.

I want to consider tha naija option because if the ff reason:
The postion is in the exact discipline within the industry that I never managed to find here (got subsurface discipline in naija, doing subsea in UK)
A good opportunity to join a world class multinational
Good renumeration etc u know the usual package.

Reasons why I may not take the offer:
I have a family here and they may find it a bit difficult to settle back in , u know the usal naija challenges, I dont want to uis to live together.

Guys what are your thots, bearing in mind that UK is damn expensive etc

I just want to take it easy so I dont make any mistakes, at the moment, It titlting towards naija option

Thanks Guys

Career / Re: Marine Engineering by oludunamis(m): 11:52am On Jun 07, 2007
not much link btw them, except for vessel construction, vessel installation works etc, offshore engr is still better suited to the ones i mentioned.

if oil sectore is ur interest, then do offhsore engr, if it is marine, then do marine engr

the idea is to do something diverse

whats ur bachelors?

Career / Re: Got A Hnd Elect/elect (upper Credit)and A Bsc. Industrial Maths 2:2.so Now What? by oludunamis(m): 11:11am On Jun 06, 2007
@ everyone
pinkio was only expressing his mind and asked for suggestions. people shud not encourage the habbit of slagging each other off. Dont judge people, or you all think you have made better live decisions simply because one is yet to get a job?

All is needs is ur suggestions and not raining insults on him.

@ pinkio
Tell us which area u want to go into and we can help further, i.e do u want the industrial maths route or the elect elct route

does ur BSc have lots of applied maths content? things like fluid dynamics, heattransfer, computational methods, finite element methods and other applied maths contents

do u have any exposure to object oriented programming i.e java, C++ etc

if u have all the above then there might be a way out using ur indutrial maths route

let me know and good luck

Education / Re: University Of Sussex Or Kent? by oludunamis(m): 3:48pm On May 29, 2007
fed govt scholarship i meant is the popular PTDF scholaship, some states like ogun state and some northern and niger-delta states do state sponsored scholarship

other than that u want to consider commonwealth scholarship, chevening, Shell centenary scholarship etc, but i hope u have a first class

if u have a first class, so UK univs give intelnational students research scholarship for phd, but it is extremely competitive, like 20 slots for the whole univ, with good schs like surrey i bet more than 100 firsl class students will apply

bear in mind that first class is easy with asian countires, cause their lecturers are not wicked nor stingy with marks, while u think of first as big deal in naija, they chunk them out in other parts of the world

good luck

PS: tell me more about ur academic background and post grad interest, i may have more info 4 u
Education / Re: LAUTECH: The Best University Indeed by oludunamis(m): 3:37pm On May 29, 2007
i am in agreement with amoradeyo. I finished from UI, it did not make me better than someone that finished from lautech.

your God given aptitude and hard work are more important. ur univ will not determine ur success

i wish lautech good luck, but they shld not start making noise now, only empy barrels makes noise

UI, OAU etc attract the best brains in the first place, the institutions did not make them, most students going to lautech etc cant pass jamb in a competitive way

anyway, am not slagging off any uni, if u like attend esut, or bida poly, maiduguri, esa-oke etc, just study like crazy, be very outstanding, thats what u need to pass employment test, GRE, GMAT etc and not ur univ or course

peace

Career / Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by oludunamis(m): 1:27pm On May 29, 2007
some of my cleverest friends have HND, they have gone ahead and made fantastic stride with their life, surparsing some of us with bachelors. It should not be a test of your aptitude.

However, because the curiculums are different, both were not made to compete with each other, but to compliment one another, while one is an engr, the other is a technician/technologist, one cannot exict without the other

In the UK where we copied from, the employment market is structured such that bot have their respective career path, for most entry level engr vacancy BSc is the requirment, HNDs with several yrs of technical experience can apply for engr positons (at higher levels)

What Nigerian companies dont make room for is growth from technician to engr, in the UK u can even start with o levels and study for various techincal quals and eventually become an engr.

More importantanly, dont allow any situation or stigma to limit you or your destinity. degrees dont determine how good you are or what God has deposited in your life

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Need Answers To Some Interview Questions by oludunamis(m): 1:08pm On May 29, 2007
@olufidu and adecisco
great advice, cant add anything to that. very professional answers

@nosa
I disagree with u a billion times, i know tons on engineering grads who are bank executives. top investment banks in london and Newyork have more engr grad than other discipline.

An engr degree not only gives you very good exposure to numeracy, it gives you a logical and problem solving mind, you can excel at whatever you decide to do, there have been medical sch grads becoming successful accountant.

Education should broaden your horizon and should not limit it

Good luck akaba. which bank is this?
Education / Re: Between American And British Universities by oludunamis(m): 3:11pm On May 25, 2007
UK
a few schs are oustanding
u can work while studying (tough though if u want excellent grades)
if u did not have 2:1 in ur bachelors, chances are slim for jobs after studying
people generally go back cos the jobs are not there and the pay is crap

US:
generally better quality of education
u cant work while in school or u risk being deported
if u studied engr, job prospects fantastic
people dont rush to go back cos pay and exposure is fantastic

canada seem to combine a little here and a little there, very cheap as wll

good luck
Education / Re: How Can I Get Scholarship For Postgraduate Studies In The Uk by oludunamis(m): 2:57pm On May 25, 2007
in agreement with: sw,

forget scholarship in UK, except if ur bachelors was a 1st class, then try british council scholarship etc

ur best bet 4 scholarship for UK schs is naija govt sponsored scholarships, extremely competitive but worth trying.

if u are science/engr grad, US is ur best bet for full funding

can provide u with more info if u want

Education / Re: Pls Advise, Uni Of Wales Or Middlesex? by oludunamis(m): 2:49pm On May 25, 2007
wales is better, it is one of the older generation univs, wales is cheaper as well, middlesex is close to london and so very expensive to live in, it is also a new generation uni

more importantly study hard like crazy and make the most of the opportuntity and see doors of job open up

ask me any quations on grad study in UK or USA and i'd be happy to give u enough info

all da best
Business / Re: Why Are Major Oil Companies In Nigeria Controlled By Yorubas And Hausas? by oludunamis(m): 8:47pm On May 17, 2007
Again, I just want to be frank and objective. I be yoruba man

I honestly dont believe yoruba have any fantastic record, Emeagwali one of the world's foremost scientist and computer genius is Igbo, Bath Nnaji top 2 robotics expert in the world is igbo, the list is endless. Igbos are very hardworking and highly focused, many of them occupying enviable professorial seats in top US schools, many of them in Top investment banks etc. What ever steroetypes be people associate with igbos is not peculiar to them, no man is an island on oits own.

Until we begin to see the best in each other, Nigeria will continue to retrogress, again no one is better than the other, let Yaradua sort out ND issues once an for all and not make flimsy excuses. Activities of militant in the ND is not peculiar to NDs alone, dig into history and see what Irish IRAs did to england, it is only shows reaction to marginalisation and neglect, at least 10 -15 yrs before now we did not have such unrest and militancy.

Let govt spend money on education NDs, build good roads, make the extra effort to develop the region where we get 90% of our revenue. More importantly let govt accept that they have been unjust to these people

Until govt does what is right, oil production may eventually stop.

Nigeria will be great again, let all be fair, let all be just, let us not embrace prejudice, None is better than the other, the best of yoruba, hausa, ND, igbo etc can only make the best of naija

Peace
Business / Re: Why Are Major Oil Companies In Nigeria Controlled By Yorubas And Hausas? by oludunamis(m): 6:54pm On May 16, 2007
We are all Nigerians, no tribe is more superior than the other. I am Yoruba, I agree that Yorubas and Hausas have a domineering spirit, yorubas are arrogant and they know better than anyone else.

I also do not agree that Yorubas are more educated, that was in the past, I dont have accurate statistics so will not go into that, I hate sentiments and i like to be objectives, basing statements on fact.

Yorubas think the whole of Nigeria revolves round them, Govt shud face up to the realities ND problems and solve it, rather they make excuses and shift blames.

Guys let us go and research about other oil producing countires (at least the ones whose govts are functioning well) ND indigines needs to be given preference, thats how it is world over,

Forget about the rubish about them not being educated, I graduated with loads of niger deltans with good 2;1 degree in engineering, yet they did not get any special prefrence.

My post seeks to admonish nigerians to to slag each other off, none is better than the other, work hard, get a descent education and let govt do more tobring more opportunties for ND people

Yorubas and hausas are no better, I am no better than anyone, life is about opportunities, govt shoud strive to spread equal opportunties.

Nigeria will be great, we are one, lets act as one.
