TravelLagos Is Developed: 16 Facts About Lagos by Olumyco(op): 2:20pm On Jun 06, 2020
When you talk about developed cities in Africa, you talk about the economy of the city, skylines of the city, bridges in the city, transportation infrastructure of the city, ICT infrastructure of the City, how industrialized the city is and other big things of the city. With the below 15 facts about Lagos, it is easy to conclude that Lagos competes and it's in the league of developed cities such as Johannesburg, Cairo and Nairobi in Africa . Johannesburg is the regional powerhouse and the most developed city in Southern Africa. Cape Town in South Africa still holds the title of the most beautiful city in the region though. Cairo is the regional powerhouse and the most developed city in North Africa. Algiers in Algeria still holds the title of the most beautiful city in the region. Nairobi is the regional powerhouse and the most developed city in East Africa. It's also the most beautiful city in the region. Lagos which is in the same league with them is also a regional powerhouse and the most developed city in West Africa. Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria is still the most beautiful city in the region.

Below are 15 striking facts about Lagos that you need to know:

1. Lagos is the largest city in Africa with a population of approximately 20 million people. It's Africa's largest mega city.

2. Lagos is the richest city (in terms of GDP) in Africa with a GDP of $157,728. If it were to be a country, it would be the 5th richest country in Africa.

3. Lagos has the highest number of tech hubs on the continent with over 40 tech hubs making it the top most innovative city in Africa. According to GSMA Ecosystem Statistics, Nigeria has a total of 85 tech hubs, the highest on the continent and approximately 40 of the hubs are in Lagos.

4. Lagos has the largest interchange bus terminal (Oshodi Interchange) in Africa. The Interchange was built from scratch by an indigenous black Nigerian company called Planet Project Limited.

9. Lagos has the second longest bridge in Africa. The bridge called Third mainland bridge has a total length of 11.8km running over the Lagoon. It is indeed a huge infrastructure costing a huge amount of money. It used to be the longest in Africa until 1996 when October 6 Bridge was commissioned in Egypt.

10. Lagos has a street called Ajose Adeogun Street, Victoria Island in Lagos which is usually heavily and skillfully decorated during Christmas period every year and would probably be the most decorated street in Africa. The powerful and breath-taking decoration unleashed on that street is second to none on the continent.

Seraphicelement:
If this news happens to be real, Nigeria would have been described like the proverbial Ostrich that buried its head in the sands while the legs are out.
Nigeria does not have Referendum clause in her constitution!
My questions are,
1. If the people of these LGAs refused to be part of the new Nation, will Nigeria expel them by force?

2. Can Nigeria, a " borrow borrow " Country stands the fire power of UN backed State?

3. Will National Assembly in Nigeria dominated by the North eventually make room for the insert of Referendum and sessions clauses in our Constitution knowing fully well that Biafra agitation will be intensified?

4. Will F.G Led by a General, Mohammedu Buhari; honour this agreement without fighting to defend the country (Nigeria) which he swore to protect from external aggression?

5. If the people decides to join "Amberzonia" in order to have a new leave of life, will Nigeria force them to stay just like it did to the South East in 6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970?

Many other questions to be asked......
However, it does appear that this might be the beginning of an end.
Let's keep fingers crossed.
Love this your intelligent questions. This should be our concerns now. We pray Nigeria gets the best.

The 25 year old would better cooperate with the 60 year old if he dropped his baseless condensending attitude towards other Africans. It doesn't go down well in SA and it's for that reason we don't get along. This giant of Africa thing has gone to your heads, but you have nothing to show for it.

When people invest in your country and you turn it around as if you are doing them a favour and they can't do without you, that will ruffle feathers.
When it comes to friendliness and reception, Nigeria has been very endearing to all African countries. We have helped many African countries including you South Africans but what we get back is hatred. Nigeria treats foreigners and foreign companies with dignity. If Nigeria wants to be selfish, we can send two of your giant companies out of Nigeria because we have alternatives. What do I mean? Nigeria could want to show her power and unfriendliness in the name of local content protection and send out MTN because we have Glo and 9 Mobile... both are Nigerian companies. We can send DSTV packing because we have TsTV. So it is you guys that needs to work on yourselves. See Nigeria is not just the giant of Africa in mouth we are truly influential in Africa. In the interview with one of our presidential aspirant (Sowore) last year or upper year... your interviewer on your station told him that the amount of money Nigerian brings to South Africa is higher than the amount SA takes to other African countries. You guys should understand how powerful and important Nigeria is. If not for some of our peculiar leadership/Fellowership problem... we can be competing with any African country...we will be competing with the likes of US and China. But dont worry by 2023 we will get it right.

I understand you but do you think the 60 year old is retiring? I dont think so. The 60 years old and the 25 years old can work together to help Africa. There is danger for the 25 years old if the 60 years old retires. A giant will always be giants.
BusinessRe: Sanlam Takes Full Ownership Of FBN Insurance In Nigeria by Olumyco(m): 1:45pm On Jun 03, 2020
Focusmind:
I always tell people that you cannot compare Nigeria's economy with that of South Africa.

South African companies are far more buoyant and highly capitalized than Nigerian companies.

There was one research that was conducted by Forbes to measure the quality of highly capitalized companies in Africa - that is multibillion dollar companies.

It was found out that Nigeria have just 38 while South Africa have 349 multi billion dollar companies.

The profit of DSTV alone can rival the turnover of any major capitalized company in Nigeria.
Can you provide the link to the data and let's see. Sometimes we need to analyse data critically before making conclusions. There are many foreign companies in South Africa and that's an advantage. Also SA has foreign companies more than any country in Africa. The white sees the place as a friendly place for their investments. And it's also not new that SA has white pple more than any country in Africa and the white dominates their economy. So the statistics might feature more of those white companies in the statistics you saw.
Even if we are to look at it critically how many companies are owned by indigenous black South Africans? How many multi billion dollar companies are owned by the blacks there? The MTN, Shoprite, DSTV and co we talk as SA great companies in Africa are they owned by indigenous black South Africans?
When you talk about companies owned by blacks. I mean indigenous black... no country has it more than Nigeria.
In Nigeria from Dangote Groups to Glo Telecom to Interswitch to Paystack to Flutterwave to GTB to Sterling to Dantata Construction to Innoson Manufacturing and so on... These are big companies owned by Indigenous Black Nigerians. The recent Forbes list of Entrepreneurs in Africa had Nigerians topping the list.
We can take a cue from the list of Billionaires in Africa. Nigeria has 4 while SA has 5. And if you analyse that of SA very well you will see that only one of the 5 is a black SA... the rest are white guys.

If you want to be shocked at how many indigenous companies we have in Nigeria just check the competition thread of Igbo and Yoruba on who has more companies (or so can recall the title perfectly) here on Nairaland. You will be shocked by the list. And besides that's just two major tribes in Nigeria ooo. By the time we list that of Hausa and Niger Delta... it will be something else. What we need now is infrastructure. And this is where I respect SA the most. With good infrastructure no country comes close in Africa. We are still competing with SA because we have infrastructure problem. Let's get it right and watch the change.

SA is doing well but a country like Nigeria is on another level and we should not try to look down on ourselves especially when it comes to owning our thing and controlling our economy as an indigenous black people.

Thanks

Nigeria is really trying in terms of Railway infrastructure in Africa. We have Monorail, Light Rail and Commutter Rails.... Metro Rail in Lagos is still under construction.
TravelThe Different Types Of Railway Systems Across African Countries by Olumyco(op): 1:48am On May 27, 2020
Railway System can be categorized according to their purpose, type of track, power and speed.
The purpose category is the most used and conventional, which easily features the other categories. It is the main division of trains today.

For purpose we have four types of Rails and they are:

1. Monorails

2. Metro Rail

3. Light Rail

4. Commutter Rail / Surburban Rail

For Type of Track we have four and they are:

1. Narrow Guage

2. Standard Guage

3. Broad Guage

4. Metre Guage

For Power we have two and they are:

1. Diesel Powered Trains

2. Electricity powered Trains

For Speed we have two also and they are:

1. Slow Trains

2. Average Speed Train

3. High Speed Train (Bullet Trains)

The purpose category easily identifies what each train is meant to do and it can either use the Standard Guage or Narrow Guage. The Standard Guage Track (SGR) is the modern way for laying tracks. Trains too can either be powered by diesel or electricity. Slow Trains are old model of trains but still very much used in many countries. Average Speed Train runs an average of 100km/hour. High Speed Train runs like 250km/hour and above. There are few countries in the world using this type of trains.

Note: Any train service that uses Standard Guage Track (SGR), has a light and aesthetically designed body and has exclusive right of way with visible tracks and runs at an average speed of100km/h and above is a modern train system.

Let's look at what Monorail, Metrorail, Light rail and Commutter rail are all about

Monorail

a. It has one rail and it is separate.

b. It operates on an elevated structure like a flyover either as suspended type or straddled type.

c. It is not as expensive as Metro rail

d. It's an Intra-city rail

e. It's more like a mini type of metro rail

Metro Rail
a. Used in Metropolitan City

b. Carries only passengers

c. Tracks are either underground (tunnel) or high above the ground level (flyover).

d. It's track is independent (That is, have exclusive right of way. It does not share with other people or other transit system)

e. It's for Rapid Mass Transit. It's frequency is higher than light rail

f. It's length is Shorter compare to light rail

e. Heavy Rail type (Modern ones are not as heavy as the old ones)

g. Intra-city Rail

Light Rail/Tramways

Light Rail : Entry floor is low
Trams: Entry floor is high

a. It can operate on a road or laid tracks on the ground which is not that expansive unlike overhead or tunnel laid tracks

b. It's frequency of movement is not as much as Metro.

c. It's body is small, frame is lighter and it is often power by electric overhead system.

d. Because of its "lighter" size and tighter turning radius, light rail has the ability to operate along crowded city streets and in urban corridors with frequent stops, where quick acceleration and deceleration are necessary.

e. It features some traits of Metro rail to be light-metro rail in our modern times today

f. It is used within an Urban area

Commuter Rail or Suburban Rail

a. It is bigger in size, has more seats and less standing room

b. It is majorly used for transporting passengers

c. It covers longer distances

d. It has lower frequency of service (that is, it operates scheduled service in which it runs at specific times rather than at specific intervals)

e. It serves lower-density suburban areas by connecting suburbs to the city center sharing track or right-of-way with intercity/freight trains

f. It's a heavy rail type, though the modern ones are not as heavy as the old ones.

Countries of Africa And Their Type of Trains

Monorail

There are only two countries in Africa that has Monorail. Namely:

1. South Africa
a. Expo Centrek Monorail, Nasrec, Johannesburg
b. Sun City Casino Resort Monorail

2. Nigeria
a. Calabar Monorail, Obudu Cattle ranch, Obudu

Metro Rail

There are two countries in Africa that has Metro rail. Namely:

1. Egypt
a. Cairo Metro, Cairo

2. Algeria
a. Algiers Metro, Algiers

Light Rail/Tramways

There are 7 countries in Africa that light rail/Tramways in Africa. Four of the countries have light rails while the remaining countries have Tramways. The countries are as below:

1. Nigeria
a. Abuja Light Rail, Abuja (Light-metro rail)

2. Ethopia
a. Addis Ababa Light Rail, Addis Ababa (light rail)

3. Mauritius
a. Mauritius Metro Express Light rail, Port Louis & the Plaines Wilhems District (light rail)

4. Tunisia
a. Métro léger de Tunis, Tunis (light rail)

5. Algeria
a. Algiers tramway, Algiers
b. Constantine tramway, Constantine
c. Oran tramway, Oran
d. Ouargla tramway
e. Sétif tramway
f. Sidi Bel Abbès tramway

6. Egypt
a. Alexandria tramway network, Alexandria

7. Morocco
a. Casablanca tramway, Casablanca
b. Rabat-Salé tramway, Rabat–Salé

Commuter Rail or Suburban Rail

There are seven countries who operates optimally commutter rail/surburban rail in Africa.

1. Morocco
a. Al Bidaoui, Morocco

2. Senegal
a. Petit train de banlieue, Dakar-Thiès (Modern)

3. South Africa
a. Metrorail Western Cape, Cape Town
b. Metrorail KwaZulu-Natal, Durban
c. Metrorail Eastern Cape, East London
d. Metrorail Gauteng, Johannesburg/Pretoria
e. Gautrain, Johannesburg/Pretoria (Modern)
f. Metrorail Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth

4. Kenya
a. Nairobi rail service, Nairobi (Modern)

5. Nigeria
a. National Rail Service, Abuja (Abuja-Kaduna) -Modern
b. National Rail Service, Lagos (Lagos-Ibadan) -Modern
c. National Rail Service, Warri (Warri-Ajaokuta-Itakpe) -Modern

6.Tanzania
a. Dar es Salaam commuter rail, Dar es Salaam

7. Botswana
a. Botswana Railways (BR Express), Gaborone

High Speed Rail (Bullet Trains)

The only country that has this in Africa is Morroco
Al-Boraq, Morroco

From the above especially under commutter rail, its possible to have some countries that have their rail service working but the ones listed above are the ones that are working effectively up to optimal capacity and also on record. Also there are some countries that have theirs under contruction.

Africa is growing and developing. It is our desire to see Africa of our dreams in no distant time.

To clear the air. Any train service that uses Standard Guage Track (SGR), has a light and aesthetically designed body and has exclusive right of way with visible track and runs at an average speed of100km/h and above is a modern train system. Therefore all the newly built train system in Nigeria are modern because they feature these things.

Talking about high speed trains which are also called Bullet trains are mostly powered by electricity and runs at an average speed of 250km/h and above.

With the above we cant say that because a train is not running at a speed of 250/h it's not modern. Not all countries can afford it and only few countries in the world have this kind. And it's mostly used for inter city operations. It's only Morroco that has done this. Nigeria we get there one day. It's one step at a time. And besides to me we are still one of the leading countries in Railway System in Africa.

Thanks
TravelRe: Nigeria Acquires New Train Coaches by Olumyco(m): 1:23pm On May 26, 2020
This is a welcome development. We should all be happy.

And for your information, Railway System (Train Service) can be divided into different categories. We have monorails, metrorails, light rails and commuter rails. They can either be powered by diesel or electricity. Also they can either have narrow gauge track or standard guage track. Speed too is a factor... can either be the high speed one or average speed. Today some of these categories have fused together with different features from each to form a combo. Today we have mostly light-metro, light-commuter and high speed light trains/commuter trains. Heavy Rails which are mostly commuter rails or metro rails are outdated today. Narrow guage too are also not modern. Standard guage track is what is used mostly now.

Now for your information, Nigeria has really tried in terms of Railway System in Africa. Today only two countries have Metrorail and they are Algeria and Egypt. Only four countries in Africa has light rail and they are Algeria, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Morroco (That of Ethiopia and Nigeria are light-metro while Morroco's own runs on a high speed line making it the fastest on the continent). There are many countries that have the Commuter rail/Surburban rail like Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Tanzania etc. For monorail only South Africa and Nigeria has monorail on the continent.

So to me Nigeria has tried. We have all the three categories aside Metro which is currently under construction. Also note this that any existing rail system can be upgraded to be modern or more efficient. You can switch to electricity, you can change the track to SGR and so on.

Thanks

But it might interest you to know that setting up webpack and babel is not that hard. There are some cases whereby you will need to use webpack and babel for your React application.
