Some factors to also consider in terms of how the economy of a country works.

1. Importation/exportation

2. Earning Power of a Country's Currency within its economy

3.. Social Amenities which give quality of life

4. Type of Cash System practiced (Debit or Credit)

5. Factors of production

6. Government Policy (Minimum Wage, Minimum Capital for investment etc)



Just to comment of some of them.... if we look at it very well things that are produced locally in Nigeria are cheap because factors of production like labour is cheap and then we pay a little for fuel, electricity and co.

Let us also know that America practice credit cash system... Nigeria cant be compared with them... the quality of life they enjoy there cant be achieved by praciticing the debit cash system we practice in Nigeria. Most of their houses, cars etc are purchased on credit. Most Nigerians pay to get these things... also let us know that

Nigeria can upgrade quality of life by providing constant electricity, water, good roads etc and when we are asked to pay for them... we will complain... and we will start shouting...

See things are cheap in Nigeria because we dont pay the real value... for us to get quality of life we need to pay more...

When a country wants to provide quality of life for her citizens you need to either subsidize or you implement credit cash system. That's the only two ways.

This thread is very educative and I think as Nigerians we still need to research and learn more about economics. The understanding of the demand and supply of anything that has to do with price is still much needed in our days.

Let me try and throw some lights here

I want you people to see dollar like a product within the goods and services domain. Dollar flow architecture in any country is rooted in Dollar trading that is, buying and selling of Dollars. Because of this Dollar itself has a price. CBN regulates Dollar price based on demand and supply. When the demand for dollar is more than the supply of dollar... there is need to increase the price of dollar. That is increase the amount of money that will be used to purchase one of it ($1). This is when devaluation of Naira or a country's currency happens.

Note: The easiest way to reduce the demand for any good and service if you cant help from the angle of supply is to increase the price for that good and service.

[/b]Demand for Dollar Activities in Nigeria[/b]

1. Importation of goods and services into the country:
You need dollar to buy these things in the international market. And when you do this, you are demanding for dollar. And it means when you use dollar, you are using the available dollar that is in the country and when you keep demanding for dollar and you finish all the available dollars in the country... it means no dollar will be in our forex reserve again and then wahala go gas.

2. Studying Abroad: You need dollar here too. Each time Nigerians goes out to study, you are buying from the dollar available in the country.

3. Tourism: Going out to overseas for fun trip and so on takes away our dollar too

4. Medical treatment: Same thing

In short anything that will require you to use the dollar to meet a need will definitely reduce the dollar available in the country's reserve.


Suplly of Dollar Activities (More like a factory or event that produces dollar for the country)

1. Exportation of Goods And Services: When we export our goods and services it will help to supply dollars into the country. Like the exportation of crude oil is the highest earner of dollars for the country. Also producing stuffs and exporting them to other countries.

2. Nigerians in Diaspora Sending Money Home: When Nigerians abroad send money home...they send in Dollars and this help supply dollar into the country

3. International Businesses: When people buys your goods from outside the country, the transaction is in dollars and it helps to infuse dollar into the system. It can also be in form of branches. If you have branches outside the country in overseas, the revenue sent to the headquarters in Nigeria is in dollars and it helps increase our forex reserve.

4. Foreign Investors: Like a company abroad investing into a company in Nigeria. E.g VISA buying shares in any of the Fintech companies

5. Tourism: People living abroad coming to Nigeria to tour the country or come to seek support or help whether spiritually or in any form.

In short any activities that involves being paid or being given money or coming down to the country as an abroad person will supply dollars into the country


Activity That Doesn't Supply Dollar But Reduces The Demand For Dollar

1. Producing and consuming most of our goods and services locally... meaning we dont import much things. We produce somethings locally and consume.

2. Avoid unnecessary travelling... especially going for medical stuff, educational stuff etc abroad.

3. Total banning of distribution of dollars by politicians and the rich within the country.

And so on...

Now with these information above the value of Nigeria is always calculated based on the demand and supply of this product called DOLLAR. When our dollar is getting depleted and reducing, know for surety that devaluation of Naira is eminent because the need to reduce the depletion is necessary.

Take for example if I need 1 naira to buy 1 dollar it means more people will buy it because it's cheap. But since I know that my dollars is finishing and I don't want it to finish quickly all I need is to increase the price of it... like saying you need 5 naira to buy 1 dollar. This will drop the demand a little... as I increase the price of dollar ... what I am doing is that I am protecting it. I dont want the demand to be so overwhelming to the extent that it will finish and since Nigeria imports many things so we need to defend the forex reserve by increasing the price of dollars... this is just a simple analogy to aid understanding.

So if Nigeria drops the price of dollar to 100 naira now... within a week our forex reserve which is in dollars will finish and the country will become a mess economically... infact things will collapse. You dare not allow your reserve to finish hence the need to keep defending it.

However if our dollars supply is now very high, then we can decide to upgrade the naira gradually because we know it wont finish. And also if we don't depend on importation too much it will also help us preserve our reserve and this will help upgrade naira.

In conclusion, if we reduce our importation of goods and services, it means we have reduced the demand for dollar. So by this, our Dollar is not going out anyhow. It will help upgrade the Naira gradually.

And to those comparing naira and dollar by digit head to head is wrong. Currency can be calibrated in any digit. It doesn't matter. What matters is economic value of that currency. Ghana Cedis was calibrated sometimes ago... it still does not give economic value.
Nigeria can re-dominate naira in any digit format and ot wont change anything... what matters most is value.

They don't have. Gautrain that was recently done and used during 2010 world cup is a Commuter Rail. MetroRail is the name of the Railway service that maintains South Africa rails.
South Africa only has Mono rail and Commuter rail.
Metro Rail is a world on its own.

Metropolitan Rail comprises of all kind of light rail, including electric and diesel power light and monorail... Including Tramcars

There is Metro Rail on its own. Commuter Rail/Sururban rail can service a metropolitan area which is obtainable in Johannesburg but its different from a Metro Rail system.
Light rails does not service a metropolitan area. It is used within an urban area.
Metro Rail is for mega city for rapid transit....

OP if you really want to do a social experimentation/reverse psychology on these people attacking you and downgrading the country. Just do a version of this for another country in Africa like Kenya or Rwanda or Bostwana or any good country in Africa and see if you will get these negative reaction. See OP the problem affecting an average Nigeria is frustration and inferiority complex. They dont believe in the country, Nigeria. They dont want even the country to make so much progress. They believe that when they travel out of the country that they have landed a very big achievement.
They always look forward to the day they will boast of travelling to Tokyo, Dubai and co. They always want to brag with abroad cities as their place of dwelling. That's their mentality. So you coining the title of this post this way will make them react negatively.

It will take sometimes to get them out of that bad mentality.

The information you are passing about Johannesburg, South Africa and Kigali in Rwanda is misleading. It's wrong.

Let me shock you. There is no Metro Rail in South Africa and Rwanda. What they have is Commuter/Suburban Rail. South Africa also has Mono Rail.

The confusion is because the word Metro is the name of the company managing their rail way system in South Africa.

There are two countries that have Metro Rail and they are Algeria and Egypt. Lagos Metro Rail is still under construction. When that is done... Nigeria will join the list.

There are four cities in Africa that have light rail and they are:

1. Abuja, Nigeria

2. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Many people dont know the information above. For Nigeria to have a light rail that conveys people from the City centre to the Airport is a great development but many wont see that.

Our growth might be slow but we are not doing badly like the way some of us portrays it here. I don't know the kind of binary reasoning Nigerians are cursed with.
Always comparing sheer numbers alone while leaving out the dynamics of economics, whenever they begin their usual comparison with other countries.
SA has a far better infrastructure than Nigeria,power, water, security, network etc like you pointed out.
It's common sense that foreign companies would have to spend far more money in Nigeria in order to bring their standard of operation at par with what is obtained in their home country.
They will also ignore that SA has a far better per capita GDP($) than Nigeria. So what we see as expensive might actually be cheap for them.
Also there's the devalued currency and double digit inflation rates.
But a Nigerian will ignore the fact that his Economy is screwed and be expecting the same standard of service obtained in first world countries at subsidized rates.
FG should come and subsidize DSTV for them too,so they'll stop crying.

Some of your claims as regards why things are expensive are not totally accurate. Infrastructure can affect cost of production... that's correct but you also need to factor demand and supply laws into it. You need to factor many factors like environmental friendliness and so on to it. There are many things that are very much cheap in Nigeria compared to SA. Ghana has light too but things are cheaper here than there. You cant just conclude that its because there is no light or water or whatever in Nigeria that is why... no it doesn't work that way. Do you know that SA pays a higher bill of electricity than us. Do you also know that the cost of petrol or diesel in Nigeria is cheaper than SA. So invariably if you look at it very well it's possible that the amount that will be spent on electricity and fuel for generator be at par with the amount that will be spent on electricity in SA or be a little above that of SA to run a media house. You concluding like this to me will not justify the price disparity.
Then again GDP per capita has nothing to do with what you brought it into. GDP per Capita is relative to population and it's an overall measure of wealth distribution in a country which portrays how the country citizens are faring in terms of standard of living and not how the market force is determined.

Why not spelt out areas of comparison like economy, infrastructure, security, tourism, education, industrialisation, technology military and co and then let people here from their different countries churn out facts and figures about it and then we all check the statistics and then rank African countries accordingly. You claim to have visited many African countries yet you could not tell one tangible thing that we all can gain from your travelling aside self hatred for Nigeria. Are there not slums in other African countries? Are there not poor people there?

It surprises me the kind of hate I see whenever I open any topic relating to Akwa Ibom State.
Instead of we arguing constructively which is one of the reasons our dear country is where it is today (cause we leave to argue constructively for development and began to speak hate (division) and condemn a common good of the other).
We are all aware of the famous phrase that says: "ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY" and so I ask why then would you guys not allow Akwa Ibom State that began to develop only from 2010 cause even as at 2007 when Akpabio became gorvernor Akwa Ibom State was nothing to be said of (not in infrastructure, road, economic activities and/or allocation) that either any Akwa Ibomites or Nigerians was proud of.
But with recent facts on ground, it has been proven that Akwa Ibom State has grown drastically beyond expectations comparing to how our Nigerian politicians gorvern us (the same has not been the case of Akwa Ibom State).
We Akwa Ibomites are not saying we are there yet neither are we saying we are any better than others (cause if Nigeria in its entirety were to be good, then every state would have been better) but we are only saying that we are happy when something that will add to the continuous development and improvement of our dear state occurs.
We are not also saying that our gorvernors (both past and present) are better than yours or that our state is more developed (in all ramifications) than yours but we are saying (constructively) that we are happy with the rate our state is developing to meet up with the standard of the world.
We are not saying our state is good but we are saying that with time our state will be better.
We are not saying that our state is the only developing state but we are saying that with time it will be developed.
The reason why the Nigerian gorvernment want to sign the HATE SPEECH bill into law (which I am in no way supporting) is because we have failed to criticize our gorvernment constructively and rather choose to bring hate and division into all our criticisms.
Truth is Nigeria is great and will continue to grow greater only if we leave hate and division and criticize our gorvernment constructively.
Truth is even as at 2008/2009 as an Akwa Ibomite I was referred to as a Cross Reverian (even when I tell people that I am from Akwa Ibom State) this I don't blame them (because as at then I repeat "there was nothing to speak of in Akwa Ibom State" not until the commissioning of the state of the art God'swill Akpabio International Stadium that people start referring to Akwa Ibom as a different state from Cross Rever State.
So I ask you guys again "why do you think I should not be proud of my Akwa Ibom State" when even though it is not the best in all ramifications, it is better.
