@lagerwhenindoubt: LOL. Socketworks cannot be your primary competition.
They are wayyyyyyyy too deep in this whole thing. What you can do is check out their
model and I'll point you in a few directions, but kinda busy at work right now, will be back to
post more.

I would have told you to call me for info but then, others wont learn from the conversation.

@poster:
I worked a lil' bit (3 years) as a Project Manager with a software company
providing enterprise portal solutions (heard of Socketworks Limited). If the Professor
specifically mentioned the term 'portal', please forget all about asking him for a flat fee/rate.

Thing is, you would probably tell him 500k/800k and his response would be: When can you start?
What most universities want is really a portal; a software that can capture all their existing processes
and make it available via both the internet and the intranet. You have to consider what they want to capture,
their target audience (which will influence bandwidth and hosting options), future updates, support, awareness and training etc.

Let me not bore you too much with all the plenty plenty kini kan. Thing is all companies that create and support portal solutions
use a per as you use model. e.g. they could charge the students 1500 naira per head, per session or per semester.
Let me know if I confused you in any way,

Ciao !

Webmasters / Re: New Forum: www.campusnigeria.com by olush0la(m): 11:52am On Nov 17, 2008
Nice forum? The dude hardly did any work on the SMF bundle.
Campus on the left, Coat of Arms on the right, repping Naija.!?
That is soooooo lazy. And the campus picture has UI watermarked
on it. And dude, what's the forum supposed to be about?

I could go on and on, but since you didn't deem it fit to lift a finger,
then I should probably save myself the sweat too. And the name: Campus Nigeria,
Try some imagination, that would be the proper way to 'rep Nigeria (Naija is so cliched)'

Sighs*
Webmasters / Re: A Few Css Shortcuts by olush0la(m): 1:49pm On Nov 14, 2008
I know a lot of you still LOOOOOOVE your <TABLEs> (as lazy as that might sound)
And would easily argue about its pros and advantages over using CSS. Good news:
YOU CAN EXTEND THE USE OF TABLES WITH CSS.

Sample CSS with TABLE code:

#main {
display: table;
border-collapse: collapse;
}

#nav {
display: table-cell;
width: 180px;
background-color: #e7dbcd;
}

#extras {
display: table-cell;
width: 180px;
padding-left: 10px;
border-right: 1px dotted #d7ad7b;
}

#content {
display: table-cell;
width: 380px;
padding-left: 10px;
}

Don't believe me?

@askphantom: not too many people would know what to do

Webmasters / Re: 2008 Web Jurist Awards by olush0la(m): 1:22pm On Nov 14, 2008
@OmniPotens & @Yawa-ti-de: I feel you guys.
But I would have to ask you for your own version (ratings).
Who would you have voted for. Let's do our own Nairaland
Web Awards.

Oya, Yawa-ti-de: Let's start asking for submissions and panelists.
It's time to switch the revolution. Come on.

And hey, OmniPotens: redesign and new design end up as the same thing.
You start changing small small elemnets and end up with something totally new,
while still retaining some traits of the old/former.

It's all semantics.
Webmasters / Re: Bully My Site by olush0la(m): 12:25pm On Nov 14, 2008

by offering mature critique of web jobs.

Webmasters / Re: Lagos Rail Mass Transit Website by olush0la(m): 11:51am On Nov 14, 2008
What are you guys talking about?
The website clearly states that it's a project under development.
It would have been amateurish to put watermarks saying "Concept Image".
The website is simple and clearly conveys the message. My beef is that they had
to go all the way to Canada to build the website. Any webmaster in Nairaland could
have built it for them, even cheaper.

Meanwhile, we should encourage stuff like this, instead of laughing at the Government,
we should tell them " Ok, you have brought the concept, now bring it to reality"
Dare to dream people, it's the magic of life!
Webmasters / 2008 Web Jurist Awards by olush0la(m): 11:45am On Nov 14, 2008
News reaching me indicates that Zenith Bank Plc's website (www.zenithbank.com)
won the annual Web Jurist Awards (organised yearly by Phillips Consulting).
What is remarkable about this award is that financial institutions have started paying
massive attention to the look and feel of their websites (content and functionality),
even going to the extent of seeding comments from Nairaland webmasters.

One thign though: I would love Phillips Consulting to involve more categories in their
web jurist awards. This will showcase more Nigerian web designers/ developers and programmers.
Abi, what do you guys think?

NB: Access Bank Plc came second (www.accessbankplc.com). They came first last year after usurping Zenith Bank's position.
Fidelity Bank Plc came third (This is their first time coming top three: www.fidelitybankplc.com).

See web jurist website: www.web-jurist.com (they haven't updated their website as at time of posting)
Webmasters / Re: How Would You Better Your Country's Official Website? by olush0la(m): 1:13pm On Nov 08, 2008
Okay.
Why don't we get started already.
1. I'm proposing getting a unique name for the hosting:
Something like : www.webmasters-alliance.com
That way, when we are done with the Nigerian Government website thingy
we could still embark on much more fruitful projects, using the website as a testing ground.

2.@ Yawa: As the project manager, please create a timeline of sorts from project initiation to deployment, based on the resources
(i.e. people, enormity of work-taking into cognisance the skills needed for executing this project)
You could also assign different people to different tasks (based on their demonstrated strenghts).
We NEED to know who and who will be involved on this project.

It's not that hard to achieve. We could use static/dynamic html with snippets of server side codes where
necessary. We don't wanna end up worse than the website is already. Immediately the Project has been
initiated everything will fall into place (with proper planning that is).

So, we've got a Project Manager who will create the structure for the project, let's have the volunteers, based on your strenghts.
I can convert any graphic mockups to clean xhtml and css anyday and also prolific with graphics and flash, so I'm in.

Who else? I see Gamine says she'll sort the graphics part.
Come on people, it's a short path to greatness , lol!
Plus this thread will start a riot on Nairaland, so,

must be your browser settings, cos those fonts are kinda leaning towards small.
Tested it on firefox, flock, IE 6 and 7, safari and opera.
But I'll double check to see wassup.
Thanks
Webmasters / Re: How Would You Better Your Country's Official Website? by olush0la(m): 1:22pm On Nov 07, 2008
Unfortunately Yawa,
The media people won't do anything unless they think
there is something in it for them. The question they'll ask is:
'So where can I access this website you are talking about?'
And the other thing is, getting the media's apetite going and then members
of this forum getting cold feet. E no go funny at all o!

Let's start something, as soon as I can get enough ayes! then I'll
pay for a superb hosting plan at www.dreamhost.com
And then we can start.
Art, Graphics & Video / Re: I Need Photoshop Training: Urgently: Ready To Pay: by olush0la(m): 12:33pm On Nov 07, 2008
@Poster:
If you are in Lagos, got a laptop, installed photoshop (any version on it) already.
Call me on 07025018178. Since you are already a graphic artist, I'll fast track you
on Photoshop (rudiments) within one hour.

NB: I have a day job, so you might wanna call me on a
weekend. Secondly, a lotta people on Nairaland would help you for free,
so stop the insults of offering money for knowledge.
Be easy.
Webmasters / Re: How Would You Better Your Country's Official Website? by olush0la(m): 12:20pm On Nov 07, 2008
@Yawa-ti-de: Thanks for starting this thread.

@everyone (designers and developers):
We could start a collaborative job on this.
I'll talk to a few media people about it and see if
we can get coverage (that'll be after we start something).
I'm ready to donate a server where we could do collaborative work (in redesigning the website)
and we'll donate it to the Nigeran Government when we are done.

Let me know what you all feel, but deep in my mind I know this could be
the beginning of really remarkable stuffs for Nigerian web deisgners/developers

NB: I'm thinking: We could use a content management system like Joomla.
Opinions please,
Webmasters / Re: Critique This Website ! by olush0la(m): 10:33am On Nov 07, 2008
Thanks peeps.
Making the necessary corrections now.
@Yawa, no worry, there is a "small" website that
I'm working on, full of all the things 'to be corrected'

I'm sure there should be enough to feed the cubs.

Haba, you just read it nah!
BUT sha, I like the way the guy just smartly put in the url for his website.
I should think of that more often. Way to go about advertising your own website.
